As a former employee of Hobby Lobby it was my job to build the farmhouse furniture when it arrived from the warehouse (which they got from China). 50% of the furniture came in with holes that didn’t line up and we had to re-drill them. ALL of HL furniture is put together with Allen screws (ALL). And the quality of wood is not the best. As a new (been doing it for 2 years) woodworker I was amazed at the poor choice of wood for the tables and chairs, but I understand that’s how the customer gets the low price. To all the makers who think HL can’t be competed with, just know your piece is better quality and made by hand not churned out by machines. And yours is Made in the USA not China. Thank you Matt for your channel and your faith!!

It actually ruined everything inside. So I we did everything myself it's almost done on the inside. The outside and roof is done. Got all new tools now I am finishing up the inside. Matt I make custom Stove covers.. You are right I very seldom get caught up . I have been making them for a little over a year I sell um cheap ..Great side income
This is a great video! You're spot on. I've been building farmhouse furniture for several years now, and when I began, the store that sells my pieces was asking me for VERY distressed, rustic, rough-looking farmhouse furniture -- like they'd been dragged down a gravel road. But, as you so rightly talked about, I'm now seeing a trend toward much cleaner looking, and less rustic, primitive furniture. For my most recent projects, I've been doing the whitewashed look with natural, or stained tops. Whitewashing (50/50 watered-down white paint) allows the grain to show through but retains the nice white color to contrast with the darker stained tops. I merely brush on the paint, then quickly wipe it off. Again, good advice for all of us who build. Thanks.

Great video Matt. Thanks for sharing! Question: can you make a video showing examples of each style? I get confused by rustic, contemporary and modern farmhouse styles. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Never apologize for doing your best and growing. As far back as I can remember, your channel has never had any real video quality issues (ok, the occasional table vibration or camera crash, but those aren’t issues, they’re entertainment- call it comic relief). The important thing is we can hear you clearly AND what you’re saying is the stuff of success, not ego stroking or ever taking for granted that we know what you know. You hit the educational spot perfectly: not too elementary that grown men start to feel like kindergarten kids holding the restroom rope, but not so fast and superficial that we don’t learn anything at all. Perfect. Question: what do I build until someone actually asks me for something? I really enjoy building furniture, but need something a bit quicker to produce to generate income while I’m building furniture… noodle boards? Corn hole sets? I dunno. Still working that out and hitting the big guy up for a little help. 😀🙏
Been watching your videos for a bit now and even made your end table and coffee table. I would love to see some videos of how you refinish your current furniture items.
Farmhouse isn't my personal style, but I can confirm that it's the style that sells the most. I have roughly the same profit margin on a $600 farmhouse style coffee table made of pine than a mid-century black walnut coffee table that sells for $1000.
Thanks for all the advice! We have two furniture stores in the town I live in. Both of them being locally owned, and one off locations, with one of them carrying mostly Ashley branded furniture, other carrying a mix of mass produced and high quality fine furniture. The other stores you mentioned are all three plus hours drive away. None of the stuff sold up here is farmhouse style furniture. Amish or shaker style and what I would describe as boring contemporary furniture is what our stores have. There really isn’t any handmade furniture sold on FB connections either.
Another Great video. I’d love to see the refresh maintenance you mentioned and would really like to see what finishes you use other than the brown white combo. The grey table in your house is fab.
