Oh my gosh. My grandfather always told me "Raisins are rabbit droppings". I would never eat them after that. Never had them in my house! My daughter came home from kindergarten all excited because they had oatmeal raisin cookies, and they were "so good'. She asked me why we never had cookies with raisins? "they are just dried grapes". I was adult and still believed my grandfather. If you couldn't trust your grandfather, who could you?
I love raisins, but never had thought about comparing rabbit droppings to raisins LOL. You didnt ruin it for me by telling that sweet story. Thank you for this recipe
Carrot salad is one of my husband’s favorites! I prepared your recipe for dinner tonight!! He said, “This is the BEST you’ve ever made!” Changing the raisins to golden raisins and adding the powdered sugar makes all the difference in the world! Thanks so much for another great recipe!! Btw, congratulations on your well-deserved UA-cam award!! 🏆🎉
Believe it or not, Chick-fil-A served this for years!! They discontinued it right before they got rid of their coleslaw. This is the recipe I figured out after that because it’s the only vegetable I could get my young son to eat! I don’t use sugar, opting for a little salt and ground black pepper. We love this salad!! I use the small grater side as it’s easier to chew for toddlers and little ones.
I love this salad made with fresh grated carrots. I haven’t made this in years. I will now. And soon… Thank you. ❤I’m laughing so hard… rabbit salad. 😂
LOVE this salad. There is a restaurant near my work that serves this, and I get it every time I go. I count it as a salad and dessert. Love it with pineapple, and I think it'd be great with some chopped pecans in it too.
My mom always made this when I was a child. I will normally buy the cheapest raisins but golden are my favorite. I've never made it with any sugar, just real mayo. My mom would heat a pan of water up on the stove and soak her raisins for a short bit to soften and plump them up and then drain. I also do the same. I like think this salad is best made the night before so the flavors incorporate together and the carrots soften a bit. Love carrot salad!
Carrots, pineapple, and raisins are sweet. I would think that would make it sweet enough. Most people eat too much sugar. I think I would like it your way better. I like things a little less sweet than most people do.
One of my favorite salads. Your dark raisin story cracked me up. I raised rabbits growing up, and I never put those two things together. But I do see how that could happen. Thank you for sharing.
Hi😊I live in Portsmouth Ohio. I knew you 2 lived in Kentucky but I never realized you lived so close to me until this video. Congratulations on Your silver button! 🎉 Thanks for your recipes and love.❤
Here is my little story of carrot salad. When my son was in elementary school, he had school lunch most days. One day he came home and told me Ms. Katy fed them carrot peelings for lunch. I told him no it was carrot salad. I could not convince him that it was not the peelings. To this day, he does not like carrot salad. I think I would enjoy this one with the pineapple in it better than my recipe. Thanks for sharing. Have a Blessed day.
THIS is a refreshing salad. They had it at Home Towne Buffet. JUST want to let you know I picked up two boxes of little Debbie's Christmas Trees. The store had plenty. ❤️❤️❤️🌲🌲🌲☮️☮️☮️😃😊👍🖐️👌
Hi Tom and Melissa! I enjoyed hearing the history and story behind this carrot salad. Especially why you use Golden Raisins 😂. This brings back memories for me as well. My Mom made a similar salad with walnuts. Thanks so much for sharing and Thank You Melissa for posting the written recipe for us. Have an awesome day. 🤗
Hi Tom and Melissa The carrot salad looks and sounds delicious ! I’ll bet Crasins would also be great and add a bright red color to this beautiful salad ! Thsnks for all y’all great recipes , and for always adding the receipt to the description box for us ! God bless ❤️🙏🙋🏻🌈🙏🎄🥗
@@cathyprosser1050 I know I add them in my dressing at Thanksgiving and Christmas also the Crasins add a nice sweetness to the cornbread dressing and I add them to my regular table salads also !!
I fell for carrot salad when chick fila used to sell it but discontinued and it had dark raisins this looks better with the goldens. I will make this soon thanks and congrats on the YT silver award!!
Oh my goodness, Tom! Your confession about the raisins being rabbit droppings was hilarious! And, having come from a family that also raised rabbits, I can see where you got that idea! I loved them as a child, but now, not so much. I am so glad that Melissa pushed you into doing Come Sit At My Table. I have thoroughly enjoyed every video AND all of the recipes that I've tried!
No matter what I'm doing I will always stop and write down your recipes . I mark them as from your channel because I know they are going to be good. When I flip through my recipes ( I have thousands ) and I see that mark I know I can trust that recipe. Thanks to Melissa for always making it so easy to get these recipes.
We had it a lot, we always had a big garden and grew our own carrots, it had walnuts (again had walnut & pecan trees), orange jello and home dried raisins.
My mother ALWAYS AT EVERY HOLIDAY made her golden glow salad. It had carrots, celery, pineappleand setvin lemon jello. No one liked it but it was tradition . It had to be there or the dinners couldnt start.😅😅😅😅😅. Im in my mid 70s and im second born ...moms still living at home in her mid 90s...its the golden glow once more. 😂😂😂 i think when moms gone someone will have to make that goldenglowmor itvwont be a holiday meal.
Well Tom, I am right there w/ you about ousting dark raisins from this recipe. I thought it was bugs, quite frankly, & found it absolutely detestable! Nowadays, I enjoy them by the handfuls just like the Golden Raisins, & I only select Sun Maid, bc their quality is top notch. Love carrot salad; looking forward to trying this recipe. I'm also a pineapple fanatic. Centrifical force comes to mind in draining this fruit. Remember the old Salad Spinner from the 1970s? Well any devise of this sort should drain it well enough, right? Thank you Melissa for the camera work. Great vid. God bless.
My mom also made a broccoli, raisin, bacon and thinly sliced purple onion with mayonnaise ( always Dukes) vinegar and sugar dressing. I love making that salad.
4:42 I had to laugh about the dark 9:23 raisins story because that's the very reason I won't eat raisin Belgian pie, reminds me of , we call them bunny beads in our family. 😅 Your stories are so entertaining. That's what makes cooking fun, having stories to share with the recipes.
I remember going through the lunch line at school growing up and I always asked the lunch ladies leave out the other side on my plate and replace it with a double portion of carrot salad. I haven't made it in years but I will now! Thanks for the reminder and the memories!! Merry Christmas!!
So many different memories pop up from our childhood. I'm 69 years old, and I still love watching the animated Christmas shows every year. It throws me back in my in my memories when I was a child sitting on my father's knee. Just like reading the night before Christmas Story every year. I had a wonderful childhood and will always have those precious memories. Just like Tom has of his mother and father. Have a wonderful week.
That is so funny! My Mom made carrot salad and used the dark raisins too. My brothers told my that the raisins were bunny poop. For years I would not eat her salad.
Congratulations on 100K followers, saw video today. Really do enjoy your recipes and how Tom is very thorough in explaining each step!! Aside from that have had several favorites. Keep up the great posts, congrats and Merry Christmas!!
I never thought I would be saying that a man would teach me something but here I go you taught me to mix the mayonnaise with the powdered sugar that I think that is very smart. I always just put it in the bowl and mixed it all up and it does make a difference, when you don’t mix it up and mix it up. And I thank you very much for that.
I live close to Amish in Ohio and got their recipe for carrot salad about 20 years ago. It is like yours except it does not use any sugar since the raisins, pineapple and carrots are all sweet. I do use the dark raisins.
I love this salad! My Mom made this all the time when we were young. I used to love going to stay at my grandparents house because my Nanny used to make this and another favorite of mine which I haven't had in years. It's a jello with cottage cheese and I think maybe apples and celery. I'm not sure but I wish I would have gotten all her recipes before she passed. ❤🙏
Oh, this is such a great salad. Thank you for the recipe. My in-laws lived in the New Smyrna Beach area, and my parents vacationed there too. We always went to Duff’s. I loved all of their food. I think they are still in Clearwater. I will make this. The dark raisins always looked like flies to me.

My Mom was so health-conscious we never had added sugar except for desserts. Carrots, dark raisins, mayo and walnuts. Occasionally diced apple. Love the pineapple which I too discovered at the smorgasbord restaurants. A great end-of-the-week salad when the lettuce was used up.
Ty for this recipe. Reminds me alittle of my moms leaf lettuce recipe with sliced bananas and I believe half mayo, half miracle whip and sugar. It too was delish😋👍
My Mom made this salad when I was a child. I loved it and miss it. You're taking me way back. Maybe watching this video, I can learn to make it. Love your channel and I just subscribed.
I love carrots salad so I’m going to try this recipe I’ve never made it before so it looks easy. I can see what you mean about dark raisins it does look like rabbit poo lol. Thank you for the recipe.
I just love watching y'all. I would totally love sitting at your table. It is so sad how our nation has forgotten what fellowship with each other consists of. I watch ..even when I know I'm not going to make what you are demonstrating. Please let us see your sweet wife more. Be blessed and have a Merry Christmas!!
Great salad! I understand your use of the golden raisins but I just rather like the contrast the dark ones give to the salad. You've made me want to make this again😊 I love it too ❤
I hadn’t thought of this salad in years. Thanks for reminding me. I don’t remember the sugar, but it’s been a lot of years since I made it. I’m 79, and my Mom made this when I was a child. I also made it when I was married.
Not only does your salad sound sweet but so was your story about your mom. Looks delicious! I had an exchange student from Germany live with us for a year and she would make us carrot salad. She said it was popular in her country.
My mother used to make this salad at least once a week. My dad would say that the dark raisins were roaches, which made my brother like it even more. It became a family joke so that we called it roach salad. You brought back a forgotten memory with this video, and I’ll be making carrot salad tomorrow!
Carrot salad was very popular in my house in the 70s. I have fond memories of either carrot salad or pear salad being on the table during the summer months. I love raisins of any color! lol! Another great dish and memory.
I enjoyed this video. When I was a child we had carrot salad often, and it was my job to grate the carrots. Ours was usually carrot, apple and raisin. We also had it with a sprinkling of coconut which was like that served at Morrison’s Cafeteria. Carrot salad is still a favorite of mine. Thanks for the memories.
Amazing the "gross' things our parents leave us with 😂. My Dad called raisins "dog ticks" and he called meringue "calf slobbers". I got over it and eat both but I always hear his voice when I do. 🥰 Can't wait to try this recipe. My husband likes carrots, will tolerate raisins, but won't touch pineapple. I have learned that shredded apples can be a substitute for crushed pineapple so I will have to give that a try here.
When you reminisced about traveling between the same two points, first as a child and now as an adult reminds me of my experience. My family often made the trip between Kankakee, IL and Carbondale, IL (about 300 miles). When I was a child in the 1960s years before the Interstate, it would take twelve hours to make the trip. I was twelve years old when the Interstate 57 opened fully, linking Northern Illinois with far Southern Illinois -- and that twelve hour trip was reduced to between five and six hours. We had the same regular stops for refreshments -- The Chuckwagon Diner in Champaign, IL, The Dutch Kitchen in Arcola, IL, and/or Trailways Restaurant near Effingham, Illinois. My favorite was The Dutch Kitchen for their Dutch Sausage Dinner with Shoo Fly Pie Al-A-Mode for dessert. It took me a VERY long time to find a recipe to replicate their Shoo Fly Pie. Sadly, all three of those restaurants are closed today, and only one of the buildings remains in use.
We grew up with my great grandmother living in our house. She made this same salad and she always used golden raisens. So thank you for bringing back memories of gram.❤😊
Love this show but at this point I am wondering what I like best - the recipes or Tom’s Tennessee accent. Being a Canadian East Coaster from Cape Breton Island I find his “homey” accent reminiscent of my own. Happy Christmas!
My mom loved carrot salad too. She made hers with Miracle Whip, sugar, raisins, chopped walnuts and mini marshmallows. I make mine the same way but I use real mayonnaise instead of Miracle Whip.
We had what my mom called carrot and apple salad. Some times she asked raisins. She used Dressing. We loved it. Your carrot salad sounds even better. I will be trying this.
I love carrot salad but I haven't found a recipe that compared to the kind you are making so I am happy for this. I love the stories you guys tell about the past. I always loved Duff's all you can eat buffets too.
I love to hear your stories with every recipe. I have lots of memories of my mom and things she used to cook. She was from Arkansas so her cooking involved lots of lard and frying. I loved it and loved and miss her so very much. Thanks for the nostalgia.
I love carrot raisin (the dark kind, ONLY) and pineapple salad. I used to get it at Sizzler. Just call me a rabbit, i would only go for the salad bar lol. Ive made it once, and it didn't last long in my household. I've never even thought of putting in powdered sugar instead of regular sugar. Great tip Tom and Melissa. Ty both and have a great Happy Holidays together.
Oh my gosh. My grandfather always told me "Raisins are rabbit droppings". I would never eat them after that. Never had them in my house! I absolutely love carrot salad, thank you for this easy recipe!!
What a cute funny story!
😂😂
I love raisins, but never had thought about comparing rabbit droppings to raisins LOL. You didnt ruin it for me by telling that sweet story. Thank you for this recipe
This is an old time church salad. 😂
I love that Tom gets choked up at the end of this video. So touching to remember our family and their traditions through food.

LOVE this salad. There is a restaurant near my work that serves this, and I get it every time I go. I count it as a salad and dessert. Love it with pineapple, and I think it'd be great with some chopped pecans in it too.
I thought the same thing, too!
You're right!!!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I was so disappointed several years ago when Chick Filet stopped having carrot salad. Your😂😂😂 rabbit dropping story is so funny.
My mom always made carrot salad, but hers was made with orange Jello. So true... so many family gatherings with good food and treasured memories!!
I've had that one too. I like it too, but I prefer this one.
Love watching your videos ❤

My Mom made hers with finely grated carrots, raisins, milk and sugar. That's it and we loved it. The milk turned orange and we loved it too. LOL
I love how greatly you appreciate food, & the people you associate with it❤️
I absolutely love carrots 🥕 salad 😊
I too am a fan of carrot salad.I was introduced to it at a RESTERENT in Jefferson Ga.Years ago.ThanksTom for your Moms recipe.
I’m sure it was “Kings Table”. We had one in Louisville and it was my grandmas favorite too!

Same here about the flies! (I lived close to NSB for years, forgot about Duff's!)
Love carrot salad!
My mom made it for me and her back when. I don't think anyone else ate it.
I can relate with you about food looking suspicious ... When I was little I thought Black Olives were BUGS
I make a similar salad, but I use vanilla yogurt instead of the mayo and sugar. Much healthier and fewer fat calories. II also add walnut bits to mine; for the crunchiness.

My Granny's carrot salad is shredded carrots, mayo, raisins and dry roasted salted peanuts. YUM! Your version looks good too 😊
My Mom was so health-conscious we never had added sugar except for desserts. Carrots, dark raisins, mayo and walnuts. Occasionally diced apple. Love the pineapple which I too discovered at the smorgasbord restaurants. A great end-of-the-week salad when the lettuce was used up.
Love carrots what a fab recipe

Is the accent from Tennessee or West Virginia, maybe a mix of both? I’m thinking he’s said he was raised in West Virginia.
Another winner...I luv carrot salad!!! So glad you have given this recipe to us. Merry Christmas! May God Bless y'all always. 🥰🤗🙏🙏🙏
My mom loved carrot salad too. She made hers with Miracle Whip, sugar, raisins, chopped walnuts and mini marshmallows. I make mine the same way but I use real mayonnaise instead of Miracle Whip.
This salad is at every buffet I have been too. I have never tried it but like your mom my mom loved it and got it every time.
Thank you 😊 Tom for sharing this I’ve got to fix it like this yummy 😋
We used to have that carrot salad. My mother toasted pecans and chopped them in half and sprinkled just over the top. Yummy!
Looks delicious!!! I think my mom would like this salad, tom, and melissa. Happy holidays!!!, ohio.
I like my carrots Cold 🥶 yummy
**Congratulations** on your Beautiful Award. You Two totally deserve it. Love your channel. God Bless you both.
12/15/23 What memories indeed. God Bless you both.
