Portugal, like Czechia and Bulgaria, is a country that would be forever known by fans as the country with the biggest glow-ups in the last decade. Love them to bits.

What you said about "Amar Pelos Dois" is what I've frequently said about it...in that everything just stands still while it's being performed. During the actual contest, I pointed out to those who were watching it with me that you could hear a pin drop...the audience in the arena, who had been pretty much up for the Imri Zivs and the Sunstroke Projects and the Gabbanis had completely become engrossed in this, magical little song from Portugal. It's why it's one of the best Eurovision songs ever...and even beyond Eurovision, as a piece of songwriting, it really stands up to anything. If Portugal never achieved anything else in Eurovision, what they did in 2017 would be more than enough.
Right up there with it is 2022's entry. Already talked about it on your channel elsewhere but it's so warm, so special. Her vocal is one of my favourites ever at Eurovision. It's so distinctive and suits the song perfectly. I think it's also one of the most well-suited stagings you'll ever see at Eurovision. It's incredible. You have one of the Andrej Babić songs in the Fantastic category (2008) and I'd not only move it up one tier but also have it joined by 2012's Vida Minha. They're borderline perfect songs in terms of composition and instrumental choice. In both cases, the staging is exactly what you want and both have strong, strong vocal performances. I get something new every time I listen to both of these songs. So yeah, that's four Portuguese songs amongst the greatest ever for me...and you mostly got them up there too.
Let's complete my top by having some agreement on O Jardim. I have it one tier higher. I don't have so much of a problem with the staging choices. I know 2018 was limited on-stage with what you could do and I think, they actually got more out of this than I was really expecting. I find it very creative, especially in some of the things they do vocally. It's a thoroughly enjoyable listen every time. Follow that up with disagreement on 2019, as I completely admire all the things they're trying to do here. I find it dark, brooding...some of the strange instrumental sounds that seem to pop out of nowhere, and, an exceptionally underrated vocal performance at times. I think it's brilliant but also am fully aware of why it didn't do well. It might be one of those entries that we look back on in 15-20 years and say, "Wow...Portugal knew which way music was going and this was ahead of its time."
Glad you appreciated Medo De Sentir to an extent. I don't know if I have it as high as you do but I am starting to like it a lot more than I did at the time. It got lost, when you would listen to all the songs in a Eurovision year and that would've been a problem at the contest. I don't think it would've qualified, particularly if O Jardim came last in its year. However, take it away from Eurovision and the idea of competition...and it's a really nice, little song. I'd go solid at worst.
I want to move "Love Is On My Side" a bit further down because of all the reasons you said but because the repetition of the chorus and the lazy lyric writing bothers me even more than it bothers you. It actually angers me that so much good instrumental work, particularly the use of strings, is then...wasted with this, horrible hook. There's lots to like but I can't get over that.
Solid entries from Portugal in 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2015 that we moreorless agree on. The 2004 entry is particularly good in the studio version and I like the Disney-song-esque 2010 entry a lot, it's really well-performed. 2007 is memorable and does what a Portuguese entry should be doing. 2015 is actually a borderline great, dark entry until that poorly-written chorus hits. Just takes away the entire atmosphere of the song.
I don't mind 2006 so much, it kinda fits in with the Suntribe, Femminem approach to female girl groups at Eurovision at the time. I think it's pretty solid and I definitely see what they were going for...so I think you should probably move it into the "Not for me" category because it's not as unappealing and directionless as 2005 and 2011 were.
Agreeing with you in not enjoying 2009 at all but I would've put it in a lower tier than you based on your descriptions of the tiers. It's not for me. But disagreeing with you when it comes to 2014. I think it's solid. It's not music that I'd listen to outside of Eurovision but as a performance from a sunny country like Portugal, I don't dislike it. I wouldn't skip it.
I think I covered everything briefly. Portugal, particularly recently, and a couple of times in the past, have produced excellent Eurovision entries and are amongst my favourite countries.
    My Top Five:
    1. Salvador Sobral - Amar Pelos Dois (2017)
    2. Filipa Sousa - Vida Minha (2012)
    3. Maro - Saudade, Saudade (2022)
    4. Vânia Fernandes - Senhora Do Mar (Negras águas) (2008)
    5. Cláudia Pascoal - O Jardim (2018)

Portugal have always been middle ground for me, but after Salvador won they've really done well in my book. Personal favourites are 2008, 2009, 2017, 2018 and 2021. 2021 in particular is my absolute favourite - Tatanka's voice is amazing and easily the best in 2021, and just everything was pretty much perfect. Considering most people put Portugal near the bottom of their top lists, I was absolutely thrilled when they qualified and eventually came 12th! I agree with most of your tier list picks for this one.

The stupid men in black chorus and probably the spoken part ruined the songs chances but she sings beautifully.

I think, 2012 is very underrated and is one of my favourites. It's one of the songs that have a bigger impact on a smaller stage (like in the NF)

Portugal has done a great job in the last decade for sending a lot of charismatic quality songs, that reflect the country’s culture well. My favorite entry is „O Jardim“ from 2018. Such a beautiful song with poetic lyrics, and what a shame that this piece of art got overseen by so many. I also was a fan of Conan Osíris and his avant-garde performance one year later. Unfortunately, the performance and the costumes were better in the national final than at the contest itself. Still he would have absolutely deserved to be in the grand final and to get a Top 10 result.

Welcome to one of my favorite countries! Portugal just stole my heart and I love a lot of songs, specially of the 90's era. And when they won in 2017, on my birthday, for me is like a present, Amar pelos dois is my favorite winner of this century! Take care, min kära!

Fantastic analysis. No one in UA-cam is as good as you are analyzing Eurovision songs. Congrats. What a great job!
I kind of agree on just about everything. The “Telemóveis” song in 2019 was actually good when it won the Festival da Canção to represent Portugal but the singer made too many changes for the Eurovision competition in Tel Avid, especially in the attires turning what could have been a respectful representation into something that deserved not to advance to the finals as it did.
“Senhora do Mar” is one of my favorites. And of course, “Amar pelos dois” with Salvador Sobral the amazing winner in Kyiv, Ukraine. A winning song that got translated and recorded immediately into several languages around as the world. Still holds the record as the highest winning score in the history of Eurovision’s competitions.
    Thank you!

Wow, my tier list compared with yours has 11 songs in the same tier and 14 just one tier gap. And then there is of course telemoveis which is the only one we don´t agree.
I'm so glad about 96 entry, yes it is among the greatest. Thank you Groot

Portugal has been a hit or miss, but when they bring something good to the table, it's just amazing. I'm happy I got introduced to Eurovision in the year Salvador Sobral won, albeit after he won.

I think that many fell for Telemoveis during the national competition where it felt softer and more inviting. In Tel Aviv, it came off as alienated, trying too hard, which was the wrong approach when attempting to connect.

Really surprised by your opinion on Telemóveis (2019) as I just saw your review of the song at the time and you seemed to enjoyed it then. Still, not intended as shade, you are OK to dislike it or to have changed your mind or maybe I did not understood it for what is was.
As I have watched a few of your reviews now, I feel I already know what I like most but also dislike about them. I love how you analyze the diffente parts of the music side but I also dislike how you, imo, not value enough the singing part of the songs. This last part comes in to play in your review of our 2003 song which, while melodically might be run of the mill, in the singing part, she beats most if not all, that year. I also disagree about 2009 which is indeed very upbeat (as it is a love song, a poem to the loved one), but it has many genres and instrumentation through out the song, I don't understand how you did not value that. Another (small) criticism is that you don't often mention the lyrics of the songs so I don't know if you look in to those as well. Our 1996 song, while brilliant composed, is imo even more brilliant in the text. A song about cultural interchange between countries, against racism. After the "colonism is good" of 1988, we, as a country, needed this song. O meu coração não tem cor translates to my heart has no color, ofc. And happily agree about 2014 (lol) and think if 2015 was Sweden's song to produce it would be a banger. The people who did it here did not know how to produce it adequately.

Hehe we often agree, but Portugal is appearently one of the countries where our opinions split. My absolute favorites are 2003 and 2009. I love them to bits. I just love the chorus of the song 2003 to bits! Both in Portuguese and English. And 2009 is a master of a playful ambience. It’s happy but it still has a pinch of melancholia in it.
Other songs I love and cherish are:
1996 (a real dynamic piece of music, it’s just so interesting)
1997 (seriously - HOW did it end up the zero? The melody in the chorus is amazing.)
    2006 (Yupp - guilty pleasure!)
2007 (I remember how shocked a lot of people were when it turned out being just 3 points from the final, but in the hindsight - it really deserved it. If I were the lone judge, it would’ve gone! I love the performance and countries should be rewarded for going the cultural way!)
2008 (I find it quite over-acted honestly. Like it’s SO dramatic. But it is good.)
    2014 (Kinda like 2007)
2015 (The 90s kid in me loves this)
2017 (Remindant of old timey Disney, in all the right ways. Though I prefer it being sung by Luisa Sobral)
2021 (This is so fun and great, yet touching!)
Those are all great songs, as I said nothing compares to 2003 and 2009 for me! Love those to bits!
Now what songs don’t I like?
Well; 1994 - I don’t like her voice at all.
2004 - Probably the worst of this bunch.
2011 - Ugh I really don’t like joke entries where the point is ”serious”. A joke entry should go 100% into silliness.
2019 - It’s just weird. Not artful or anything, just mechanic and weird.

I will never get tired of recommending to those who adored Portugal 2009 another Portuguese band which was insanely famous at that time (in fact, "Flor De Lis" were kind of a discount, more inexperienced version of them, in my opinion, and I feel they won Festival da Canção that year, because that sort of music was en vogue because of Deolinda).
They're called Deolinda, and they have 4 great albums. I really suggest listening to "Seja Agora" (ua-cam.com/video/pjACOG_loM0/v-deo.html) and going from there to discover their music. The lead singer has now a solo career, also with great songs, though more in a pop genre (she's called Ana Bacalhau).

One of my favourite ESC countries!!!
I think Telemoveis is extremely interesting and captivating as a song (it was my #1 in 2019 lol), but the performance just really hindered it...it was just way too weird, and a tiny bit pretentious in my opinion
APD is definitely among the greatest for me too, and O Jardim and Saudade Saudade would be in the "fantastic" tier for me.

  • @anaisabelsantos4661

I mostly agree with you, some songs are great, some others I had completelly forgoten about.
There are a lot that could be classified as 'nearly perfect' but didn't make it into this list, like 1991. I'd slide some of them 1 tier up.
As for 2011 most of europe didn't get it, for me it's the best joke ever. It's a protest song inspired in the 70's, but that talked about the EU modern politics , it was written just our prime minister saied "if you don't feel well here emigrate!". Homens da luta are comedians and if remember it well they participated in the national competition to amuse people not to win, people got so amused and related so much with the song that they won, they didn't want to go to eurovision because their song wasn't good eneugh.
2014 - it's a very popular genre in Portugal but I wouldn't listen to at home, I tolerate it in street summer fests because it's happy and nice to dance to, but I try not to listen to the lirics because they are usually terrible.
Well, another joke is telemóveis, if there was a tier called "should be deleted from existance" there would be it's place. People say it is profound but I can't get past the words, I don't think I ever listened to it from the beginning to the end, I even skipped eurovision itself just not to see that performance.

I have a soft spot for 2011 but then I like wacky and the tune's quite happy and tuneful but I know I'm in the minority. I quite like Qué Se Tua and Suzy looks great. 2015 some goon thinks that's an infinitely better song than Heroes - I never remember it. I like Telemoveis but a lot of people don't and I get it.
