This is deep!! I need to watch this video quite a few times to digest it all! Now, i am seriously considering converting to Catholicism! I really enjoy this speaker!.He seems to know the bible very well,and what the Catholic church really teaches!,despite all the confusion out there and all the Protestant objections!

You do not convert to a religion,or denomination you convert to Jesus Christ. This tells me you do not understand the basics and are in danger of doing what J.W.'s do ,when they join that cult. First understand the word of God which was written by or under the control of the Apostles . Paul's scribe gives us his name ,which was Tertius. John was told by God to write down what he told him .Rev 1. Justin Martyr called their writings the memoirs of the Apostles showing it was written ,not oral.
STUDY THE EARLY CHURCH teaching in Acts .They will tell you to study the early church father ,and not tell you about their forgeries written in he 9th cent ,called the 'False decretals.' LETTERS CLAIMING TO BE WRITTEN in the early church to back up their false claims .
They don't tell you there is only 1 small fragment of the writing of Irenaeus from an early date the rest is much later ,and again there is no evidence.
The speaker might sound convincing to someone who does not know the Bible ,but it is full of errors.
The Apostles warned that when they had gone false teachers would come into the church.
This is clear if you know the history of the Roman church. They do not tell you about Theodosius who was the Emperor who made Roman Catholicism THE ONLY LEGAL RELIGION .The laws of Theodosius can be found on line. He said if you do not join the Roman church you will lose your property. This alone changed what Peter preached ,that you need to believe Jesus who was the son of God died for your sins and you must repent.and then be baptised. Ever since the Roman church has been saying you must join our church to become a Christian . This was said to control people like a cult that says only we are right and everyone else is wrong. This also led to a church full of false 'converts' who joined to save their property.The true believers left. The British church is thought to have dated from the 1st cent as there were churches started all over the Empire ,which Rome tried to take over to unite the Empire.

It because they know that they CAN be debunked. The bottom line is our Faith is a gift. Grace is a gift. We didn’t do anything to receive this gift. But we must accept this gift. The entire Bible says we must do this and that to enter the kingdom of heaven. We must be righteous. St Paul says we are working out our salvation. Jesus says he will separate the sheep from the goats and this is based off of our actions (works).

With my Born Again friend, she started talking about this and I had a hard time discussing the concept because honestly, I had not really gone into depth about it up to that thought so thank you for helping me to understand what the heck she was getting at at helping me to understand what I was trying to clarify (I somewhere along the way knew about this conceptually but I didn't have a full enough understanding of the rift between the Protestant belief on it.)
And THAT if the problem. Catholicism does nothing to educate pew people about such things. Every Catholic I speak to --including Parish Priests, --think Catholics are Born Again at infant baptism. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Read John's Gospel in Ch Three and Jesus explains it to Nicodemus. But Catholics are never taught this and worse, you will never have it discussed in a homily at Mass. Even the Clergy don't understand it.

If faith alone can save, the apostles may not obey christ in preaching. They may believe in christ but they may not follow christ.

Todd seems to be a good TV presenter and sales man; is he a pastor, really? with all his pride; even yawns while proving his point to make fun of the other. With all the faith of Abraham, when one of his work was against God of having a child against God's plan, God kept silent for 13 years. But God because he is all good and to keeps his word showed up again to tell that his plan is for Abraham and his wife Sarah. There are many Atheist who do good works but blasphem against God; are they saved? One of my catholic turned protestant friend always use to proudly give example of Pastor Ravi Zacharias, how he debunked many other religion with his points. I was very shocked of the scandal about him which came to light at the end of his life. With all the faith he had, can he be saved being a adulterous man. I really prayed for his soul when I heard of his death cos his protestant friends wont pray for him after his death. and I really wished the scandal was false accusation or atleast he asked forgiveness before his death as he would have not gone for confession with a priest before he died. So faith and works together. Anyways protestants, name only suggests to protest even the truth from Scriptures. But we are Catholics meaning universal ( we are universally united).

It's funny how Mr. Friel was teaching a working faith while criticizing the Catholic church that actually teaches a working faith. He's teaching Catholic theology while trying to debunk it.

It is the love of God (agape) that pushes our faith . ( 1 Cor. 13:2). Love is greater than faith ( 1 Cor.13:13). The Protestant view of justification has it backwards. Please , read Is .50:5: " The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back" . The good work ( hear the Word of Gid) came before faith. Scripture contradicts Protestantism but Protestants ignore true Catholic doctrines.

Except that Revelation 3:5 says your name can be blotted out of the book of life. Just because you are sealed doesn't mean you will stay that way. You can throw that away through your own free will.
In this video I learned that works is clearly necessary in some capacity for salvation, either as a demonstration of genuine faith or as something approaching an equal weight of faith. In any case, without works it ain't looking good for you.
I just stumbled upon this channel and this was beautifully explained! 👍 I am Catholic and have been diving deeper trying to learn more about the religion! I do have one question tho! You mentioned the Jews thought they could be saved through their ceremonial works and those were the works you believe Paul was referring to, which to me makes a lot of sense! But could others argue that about our 7 sacraments as we believe they help us achieve salvation?
Yes and no. If Catholics become legalistic like the Jews, and think that they can save themselves just by going through a bunch of rituals but without having a relationship with Jesus and without repenting of their sins, then it will be very hard for them also to get to heaven. Many of the Jews had blocked God in their life and basically made themselves God and tried to save themselves through their own works. Even though their hearts are far from God. That's why we need both faith and works together. A great relationship with Jesus and living how's that relationship with him. Hope that helps. Welcome to our Channel!

I find Todd Friel's argument confusing because he's actually making the Catholic argument that you're saved by faith AND works together and refutes his own protestant "faith alone" argument while acting like he's doing the opposite. That was weird. It's as weird as a prosecutor in a trial arguing in favor of the defense or the defense attorney arguing in favor of the prosecution. That really threw me off for a minute.

Catholic position= faith+works= salvation
Protestant position=
Faith+nothing= salvation+works
Todd believes the same as all believers you are saved by faith in the work of Christ IN DYING FOR US .. But this IS ALWAYS FOLLOWED by works if a person is really born again .
The R.C. CHURCH SAYS this is heresy and contradicts Apostolic teaching.

The R.C. CHURCH IS the Apostolic Succession. Christians who were not Catholic did not exist until 1500 years after Christ except for the Eastern Orthodox who were part of the R.C CHURCH until 1054.

There was no succession in the N.T. teaching .There were only qualifications ,for leadership .Even your Pope is seen on Ytube video asking forgiveness for killing most of the Waldensians in Europe from the 12th to 17th cent. So he knows it is a lie to say there were none before Luther .JOHN WYCLIFFE and the Lollards were in the 13th cent.The British church in 6th cent. refused to acknowledge the Pope who sent Augustine of Canterbury to try to get the British church, that was from the 1st or 2nd cent. ,under the control of Rome .

I might be inclined to agree with his faith alone. He completely redefined the word. I say might because his definition is presumptuous which is not surprising. I've heard many definitions of faith (of which two are my favorite--one from Vatican I and the other from Fr. John Hardon) but I've never come across the definition you present.
This is silly. Learning the violin is completely different than our salvation. It's a category error.
Were saved by GRACE ALONE. We respond to God's grace by our faith which produces good works. Thats what the Church has always taught. Faith alone condemns the man that has never heard of Christ and has never had the gospel explained to him. We are supposed to be Christ-like. Did Christ just have faith in the Father? No! He had perfect faith and obeyed the Father with perfect love...that is works! Love is works!

@Brian Farley just a technical issue… “what do we do to merit God’s Grace” makes it sound like we have to do something to get that Grace in the first place. I believe you understand the truth, but that question is confusing and could lead someone to think we “earn” God”s Grace, which we don’t. It is given to us freely by God. I believe what you mean is that through the sacraments we are given additional Grace, which we still don’t earn. There are two types of Grace…. sanctifying and actual. Sanctifying Grace stays in the soul. It is what makes the soul holy; it give the soul supernatural life. Actual grace is a supernatural push or encouragement. It is transient. It gets the will and the intellect moving so we can seek out and keep sanctifying grace. Example: the more we utilize the sacrament of penance, the easier it is to resist temptation.

@Brian Farley yes, I think people get confused with semantics. One has to do something or have a special quality (like originality) in order to “merit” something as a reward (or punishment). In other words, qualities or actions that “deserve” the results they receive. So to merit something (God’s Grace in this instant) would mean you would have to do something (a “work”) or have a quality worthy of receiving a “reward” - in this case, as many protest-ants THINK the church teaches, would be the “reward” of the grace. This is not what Catholics understand or believe. However, we receive actual graces by receiving the sacraments. The common element of various contexts of “actual grace” is that it moves people to act in ways which positively contribute to God’s redemptive work. Catholic Answers has some good little articles that explain the difference quite well.
Many times prots actually believe what Catholicism teaches, but describe it differently or use different words. It’s sad when they try to discredit the Catholic Church this way when we are actually meaning the same thing.

Sheen said, “There are not 100 people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.” If people only took the time to do their own research instead of believing someone else’s opinion, the world would be a different place! If Catholics only took the time to really learn what the Catholic Church teaches and would take it to heart, there would be fewer “former Catholics” saying they know (fill in the blank incorrect statement about church teaching) because they were Catholic…. They’d still be Catholic. It truly saddens my heart and even more so for my husband who is a recent convert. We pray daily for those “lost” Catholics to come home. God bless!

St Paul speaks about "works of the law" which cannot save - but "works of the law" has a specific meaning: St Paul is speaking into the debate about Jewish ceremonial acts such as circumcision etc. ... Protestants will often use these verses as pretexts to deny the Sacraments - Sacraments are equated to the "works of the law" ... "works of the law" becomes a placeholder word for the Sacraments... Therefore the question to ask the Protestant is what is a Sacrament and what they believe about them... Press them on the Sacraments they are familiar with i.e. Baptism and Marriage.... If those are sacraments which don't only symbolise what it does and does what it symbolises, then why not have other sacraments which can perform a similar function? Ask them about confirmation, and ordination.

It's so abundantly clear that I can't understand why so many refuse to see. Faith, yes. Works, yes. We are hand in hand with God. He saves, we respond with works. If we just take the gift of salvation as though it was nothing of value and then live out our lives like a nonchalant sinner, we won't be saved. Nowhere in the Bible does it say "once saved, always saved." Paul himself writes that it is possible that he won't make it into Heaven. If not Paul, we'd all better be vigilant.

@Brian Farley To be sure, on other sites i question the greed and wickedness of the prot preachers. Child molesters know where to go to get access to kids. Youth leaders , pastors, and the like are places the molester can join.
@@bobdobbs943 What pedophile priests? The majority of all sex abuse cases happened 30 to 50 years ago. Not present day. The church cleaned it all up too and put many things in place to make sure it never happens again. Even in it's height, only about 1% of all priests were guilty.

When I came to faith, I immediately skipped Protestantism (History made me realize it was way off), I was long divided between Orthodoxy (I was blown away by its spiritual depth and humility) and Catholicism (For its rich intellectual tradition and clarity). It was authority and unity that eventually made me choose Catholicism. Although the church is in crisis and I vehemently disagree with the Pope, I won't be a schismatic and serve and love her as I love Christ.

I like to use the story of Noah to enhance James 2:24-26. Noah believed Gods words (Faith) but also had to build the Ark (works). God did not build the ark, Noah did. I believe the story of Noah’s ark shows faith and works, as expressed in James chapter 2. :)

most R.C.'s do not know what their church teaches ,It is not a laugh the smug way you back up your ignorance and errors. It took my friend who had degrees in religious education and Roman history 50 years to finally break from the R.C. Church as she was brought up in it. Unfortunately, Protestants often refute what they mistakenly think is a Catholic belief or practice. The other thing they and Muslims criticize are actual practices that they don't know enough about and come to a false conclusion of what they're about. Example: we have statues in our churches and we have them in the Capital. Does anyone worship the statues of Lincoln or Jefferson? No? Well, we don't worship the statues in church, either. If it’s faith alone, why Jesus gave us the “OUR FATHER” to pray, then he goes on to tell his disciples “if you don’t forgive others the father in heaven is not going to forgive you”.

I got the Ephesians 2:8-9 thrown in my face as well in a similar conversation with an evangelical. I ask him to quote verses 10 as well, he did. And the part that says, we are created for good works, seemed to go over his head.
They always leave out vs. 10.

You point your finger at Hitler and call him a murderer, unable to be saved by the Grace of God. Do you really believe God can't save even the people you consider worst? How about you, brother? Jesus said any who are angry with his brother are already guilty of murder. God doesn't wait for your action, he knows your heart. Have you never been angry with someone before, even today? Humble yourself brother. Neither of us nor any before us are deserving of God's forgiveness, for we constantly demonstrate our disloyalty to Him through sin. The work done by the Grace of God through the Son is our only hope to be justified and forgiven. Repentance in the heart is a true act, it cannot be reversed. Once you are truly born again in the Spirit you cannot return to a life of love for sin, or your conversion was false and untrue.
Did Hitler repent, humble himself before God and put his trust in Christ to cover for his sin? I guess we'll never know. One thing I do know is that nothing is impossible for God, and he doesn't wish for any of us to perish. In my opinion (which matters not) it would be an incredible act of grace for someone like that to be saved, and it would serve God's ultimate purpose to glorify himself in everything good.

Thank you for doing this video. Really all your videos help me compose my arguments when speaking with my non-denominational friends (who used to be catholic). There is only one subject I am lacking in knowledge on and that is holidays. There is a new charge brought up that all Christian holidays are rooted in paganism. I don't believe that's true. I know that's not true about St. Patrick's day and I know some neutral history about it but that's about it. Could you possible make a video about this charge on Christian holidays? Using Epheshians 2:8-9 without the very next verse, verse 10 is, in my opinion, disingenuous. It is verse 10 of that same Chapter 2 that explains how we need to cooperate with the grace that God initiates to do the good works that God has prepared for us to do. God gets the glory, not us! This is the way that James 2:24 and the more than 2 dozen Bible verses that say we are judged by our deeds can harmoiously work together with the entire Bible. As it reported that Augustine said, "God created us without us: but he did not will to save us without us" It is sad and very myopic to just hang a belief on one passage. For example, the Bible says that Jesus is the rock and it also says Peter is the rock, it says Jesus is the light of the world and Jesus Himself says that His apostles are the light of the world...It is the BOTH/AND approach along with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Church that will open up the Bible to be clearly interpreted in its context, as it is not self contradictory.

Prots cannot understand the difference between works of the law and good works. They can't understand the difference between infallible and inerrant. They think prayer and worship are the same thing. They don't know the difference between justification, sanctification, and salvation. They believe in all kinds of non biblical doctrines like sola scriptura, dispensational premill rapture, soul sleep. It's kind of wild if you think about it.
Hmm. He wants "context"? How about the context that Luther devised this particular doctrine?
Protestants often corner Catholics with the argument that by requiring works for salvation, we are saying that Jesus's suffering on the cross was not sufficient to forgive sins. That is a trick. It was Jesus himself who set the bar higher for us to get salvation. Jesus's own words tell us that he is not letting us off from our sins without any effort on our part. Of course Jesus's suffering could have been sufficient to forgive sins had he wanted it that way. But he didn't and the Gospel plainly tells us that. Here are just a few examples:
(Matthew 7 : 21-23 NLT) "“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who ACTUALLY do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’ "
(Matthew 25 : 31-46 NLT) "“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne... Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’ Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’ And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’ And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”
Clearly, from these verses alone, Jesus is requiring us to do far more than just have faith for salvation. He wants us to actually do something and then he tells us what it is. Jesus is the ultimate authority on what it takes for salvation. No man can override the words of Jesus regardless of how he wants to interpret the Gospel.
God can forgive us without sacrificing Jesus on the cross btw.

God has used your videos to lead me back to my Catholic faith after 15 years of being in a protestant church. The issue with protestents is what are the works. They see work as negative things and they don't consider it good works. They think good works come with faith.

Catholicism: Works are constitutive of saving faith. Therefore the corollary is that the absence of works or presence of disobedience is evidence of dead faith. It's called mortal sin because the life of charity in the soul is dead, and so is the empty faith at the moment.
Calvinism: Also admits the proposition but not the corollary. There's no definition of what the sanctification curve should look like or which sins call into question the authenticity of one's faith.
If you're a lapsed Catholic you're a lapsed Catholic, but the assurance of salvation for a Calvinist seems to be predicated on examining one's conscience and concluding that "I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust..." Or that your sins are only backsliding, wherever the line is, you haven't crossed it. One is free to paint the moral bullseye around the dart.
@@bcalvert321 , before making the Lord Jesus our Lord and Saviour and being able to repent we must have received love, hope and faith, not faith alone because faith alone (before or apart the love of God) is nothing 1 Cor.13:2 . Have Protestants ever have read 1 Cor. 16:22? Love is greater than faith (1 Cor.13:13). If you misread Scripture you won't ever understand Catholicism.

Even if a person has the correct acknowledgment of the One true God, it would hold no substance without the correct biblical/sacred application. This would prove faith alone doesn’t amount to anything without Having both faith and works. They’re synonymous. One cannot be without the other. Faith doesn’t hold any weight without works. Works doesn’t have any weight without faith

i think of the 2 rich men who asked Jesus how to get to heaven. Jesus said to follow of the 10 commandments, give up a large portion of their wealth and follow him. Faith, action, ultimately God's mercy. Seems clear.
