Wowwwwww this is mind blowing!!! As a new Catholic and as a student in general, I never deeply looked into the crusades (and yes it’s been something thrown in my face as I’ve been converting to Catholicism) you have a true gift for reaching history!! God bless. I watch many of your videos so I can learn and prepare for when others want to debate with me.

Better look into it a little bit deeper. The blood of masses of people, Muslim, Christian, and whatever stains the Catholic Church and the Roman Popes. They are very good at dissemination and obfuscation, believe them at your peril!

This is exactly why there are thousands of different religions out there. So many people don't know the true historical facts and yet are ready to argue without knowing their history. The Catholic Church is the One and Only True Church created by Jesus Christ. Only the Catholic Church's history dates all the way back to Jesus's time and his apostles and disciples. The Great Siege of Malta where The Knights Hospitaller and other Catholic men 7,000 in number holding their ground as the Ottoman Turks wanted to take over Malta in order to take over Rome. Jean Parisot the commander of the 7,000 went to a Blacksmith and had a rosary put on the sword. They were able to hold off the 30,000 Ottoman Turks from taking over Malta and then Rome thanks to the grace of God and Mother Mary. -Referencing Father Donald Calloway's Talk in Idaho 2019. We're Catholic today because of our rich history with Jesus and because Jesus didn't want any other religion to take his people over. And that's just one example! Thank you Bryan for another wonderful video!

But after several decades of living a very evil life I was given a miraculous chance by the ever so merciful Holy Trinity to be led back to the Traditional Latin Mass which I was brought in,and was guided by some ever so powerful force to get hold of numerous books on the Traditional Church Teachings. I encourage you Mr,Mercer to continue your ever so important works for the glory of the most Holy Trinity and the One Holy Apostolic Catholic Church of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ ,Amen Dominus vobiscum Deo Gratis

About the crusades, my high nobility family was involved and contributed to the crusades. At this time, based in Venice under the Venetian Kingdom/realm. I am sure the Pope must likely utilized historical evidence from St. Augustine's era, concerning the sacking of Rome by a barbarian force lead by Alaric (410 A.D.), from an early form of 'Just War' doctrine. It derived from Augustine's viewpoint.

“Commodore” Alexius?! What does this even mean? The Alexius here being referred to is Alexius I Comnenus, the Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire (1081-1118). Prior to his accession to the Imperial throne of Byzantium he had briefly been a military commander, but “commodore”? - that is something altogether different...and even if this could be put down as a recurring slip, why refer to him as such when during the time of the First Crusade (1096-1099) he was already Emperor? This is just a minute sample of the striking historical inaccuracies and patent falsehoods with which this video is replete. The arguments presented simply do not hold up to even a basic understanding of the historical period in question. The chief motives for the Crusades were purely political, strategic, and economic. The religious fervour was only incidental - a convenient ideological pretext for the Roman Church to increase its wealth and to expand its power and influence eastwards at the expense of the “Schismatic” Eastern Roman Empire, and to check the rising power of the Seljuk Turks (who had occupied the Holy Land following their momentous victory over the Byzantine forces at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071).The call for a Crusade by Pope Urban II at Clermont (1095) was met with enthusiastic popular support among all classes in Catholic Europe, but was also a means by which many of the dispossessed and greedy Western robber barons, knights, and soldiers of fortune sought to gain lands in the rich East, and to carry on doing what they had always done best: plunder, rape, and kill - but this time, “in Nomine Christi” and with the full blessing of the Holy Father; because, you know...”Deus vult”...

I totally agree that nowadays people often take the crusades a bit out of context in order to make the church sound bad. But justifying it and claiming it was defensive is just not accurate. The Muslim world was very divided at the time. By the 1090’s the threat of Muslims expanding into Western Europe was long gone. And Christian pilgrims were allowed to come and go as they wanted. Nobody was keeping Christian’s from making their pilgrimage. But at least in the first crusade they killed just as many Christians than anyone else. Regularly ransacking christian cities. They even destroyed the Byzantine empire completely during the fourth crusade. Almost all of the crusades, even the successful ones, were a damn disaster. But that doesn’t say anything about the church today. Using religion to justify invading others was common for the time. But saying they were good or justified simply because your catholic and they make the church look bad doesn’t help anything

      1. Jesus came on earth for violence not peace (Mathew 10:34)
      2. Christianity was spread by sword, for example, Germany (Charlemagne conquest of Germania), wars against Poland, etc.
      3. Crusades were against CHRISTIANS, pagans, Jews, etc. It was not just Muslims
      4. The 1st crusade happened 500 years after the conquest of jureaslum by Muslims, it doesn't make the 1st crusade defensive but offensive
      5. Pope urban 2 called for a crusade just for political power because there were 2 popes at the time and he wanted legitimacy.
      6. The Muslim world was divided into many kingdoms, the video said that the islamic world was united.
      7. Christians and jews living in Muslim lands were much better off.
Orthodox were persecuted in western Europe, Catholic were persecuted in Byzantine empire, Jews were percecuted in both. If you read the speech of pope urban 2 (it has been documented, you might find it in the internet), you will discusted by the words he says (which were factually false).
      8. In short, the 1st crusade was just a political stunt by the pope.

You spent 11 minutes of the video setting up the Muslims as this terrible force of violence and oppression. To be completely honest they did some pretty messed up things and deserved to be criticized. Where I take issue is when u try to paint the Christians at the time as some peace-loving group who did no harm. When in reality they were just as bad. 3:23 The Christians DID NOT always spread their message through conversation. Just to name a few examples of mass forced conversions before the crusades: Theodosius and the pagans in 381, the massacre of Verden in 782 and the law "Capitulatio de partibus Saxoniae" also in 782.

Yes they deserved some criticism but generally tolerant towards most other religions. The reason why it was sooo easy for them to conquer Syria, Armenia and Egypt was also the non-Chalcedonian nature of eastern Christians. Who actually enjoyed better autonomy than they did under Roman Empire who was Chalceodnian. Generally they actually prefer to have Muslim as small elite ruling class, and mostly didn't try to force their way to convert the population. It took Egypt 6th century or more to become Muslim majority for example.
Western Christian literary point their sword like Charlemagne and the northern crusade.

@@hachibidelta4237that’s false. The Muslim world was never tolerant and there is no evidence, hundreds of thousands of Christians were enslaved with many more were subjugated to dhimmi status, that is not tolerance. That is subjugation through Islamic imperialism and authoritarianism, many Christians were killed and slaughtered, with women being raped and exploited as sex slaves by Muslim rulers, aristocrats and Islamic scholars. Archaeological evidence from North Africa in the region of Cyrenaica points to the destruction of churches along the route the Islamic conquerors followed in the late seventh century, and the remarkable artistic treasures buried along the routes leading to the North of Spain by fleeing Visigoths and Hispano-Romans during the early eighth century consist largely of religious and dynastic paraphernalia that the Christian inhabitants obviously wanted to protect from Muslim looting and desecration. When Amr ibn al-As conquered Tripoli in 643, he forced the Jewish and Christian Berbers to give their wives and children as slaves to the Arab army as part of their jizya. Around the year 666 C.E Uqba ibn Nafi “conquered the southern Tunisian cities, slaughtering all the Christians living there”. Muslim sources report him waging countless raids, often ending with the complete ransacking and mass enslavement of cities. One of the earliest reports comes from the Arab[10] chronicler Ibn Idhari in his Al-Bayan al-Mughrib. In it, Ibn Idhari describes the moment when Uqba reached the Atlantic Ocean, where he allegedly said: “O God, if the sea had not prevented me, I would have galloped on for ever like Alexander the Great, upholding your faith and fighting the unbelievers!" This is consistent with the Islamic imperialist tradition of jihad based on Surah 9:29-30, Sahih Muslim 22 and Surah 3:151. Additionally, the historian - Edward Gibbon states The fearless Akbah plunged into the heart of the country, traversed the wilderness in which his successors erected the splendid capitals of Fez and Morocco, and at length penetrated to the verge of the Atlantic and the great desert.... The career, though not the zeal, of Akbah was checked by the prospect of a boundless ocean. He spurred his horse into the waves, and raising his eyes to heaven, exclaimed: 'Great God! if my course were not stopped by this sea, I would still go on, to the unknown kingdoms of the West, preaching the unity of the holy name, and putting to the sword the rebellious nations who worship another gods than Allah’. In the early eighth century under the Umayyads, 63 out of a group of 70 Christian pilgrims from Iconium were captured, tortured, and executed under the orders of the Arab Governor of Ceaserea for refusing to convert to Islam (seven were forcibly converted to Islam under torture). Soon afterwards, sixty more Christian pilgrims from Amorium were crucified in Jerusalem. The martyrdoms of 48 Christian martyrs that took place in the Emirate of Córdoba between 850 and 859 AD are recorded in the hagiographical treatise, figures such as Saint Roderick was behaved brutally by Umayyad Muslims for apostasy. During the late 700s in the Abbasid Caliphate, Muslims destroyed two churches and a monastery near Bethlehem and slaughtered its monks. In 796, Muslims burned another twenty monks to death. In the years 809 and 813 AD, multiple monasteries, convents, and churches were attacked in and around Jerusalem; both male and female Christians were gang raped and massacred. In 929, on Palm Sunday, another wave of atrocities broke out; churches were destroyed and Christians slaughtered. Christians at all never faced tolerance, yes not all of them were massacred but that doesn’t imply that they weren’t persecuted. They were still persecuted by Islamic caliphates as they were subjected to second class citizens, those who resist were slaves with many women being sex Slaves and some were forced to marriage and thus abandoning their religion. In fact the Abbasid caliphate even utilised the Nestorian Christians to translate Greek and Roman works or they will be imprisoned, tortured or exiled for dismissing Islamic authority. Also comparing Charlemagne to those evil muslims is bluntly wrong and ignorant of history, while Charlemagne was involved in wars, it was no where near the large scale warfare that the muslims have committed. Charlemagne focused on reuniting Western Europe predominantly France, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg as part of the Carolingian empire to spread Christianity through peaceful conversions and trade, warfare happened because there were pagan Germanic tribes like the Nordic Vikings who constantly attacked and plundered their lands. Charlemagne was also a hero for leading the Carolingian renaissance along with his mentor, the early Medieval English polymath - Alcuin of York, who lead the Carolingian renaissance which was a revival of classical learning and a development of monasteries where the 7 traditional liberal arts (arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, music, rhetoric, logic and grammar) were taught and studied by the clerics of Western Europe and the aristocrats, they preserved the classical works of plato, Cicero, Virgil, Lucretius, Ovid, Horace and Pliny the elder were preserved during the early Middle Ages as monasteries were places of constant vigorous study of these works and by copying down many manuscripts of these works, along with worship. Charlemagne may have been involved in war, but so as every great hero in history. No one is perfect, but Christians saved the west from Islamic imperialism and colonialism.
