If Eddie put any effort comparable to his buildup to the 500kg deadlift into his axle OHP, I have a feeling he would have set a record that would have been untouched forever, or at the very least would have remained for a long time. When he broke that world record he used 0 leg drive, and not a single part of it was slow. I truly think he could have done 235kg

    • @MellonVegan

I'm not sure 235 is on the card any time in the next decade but I think he may of had the potential to get 220kg. The issue with the axle isn't so much the press from the shoulders, it's getting it into position

Eddie looked great on his 216kg axle press, but he actually really struggled on his 200kg attempt that day. I agree he could’ve set something higher. But then again Zydrunas Savickas set the previous record in 2010 and didn’t peak till 2015-2016. I think Big Z could’ve set a bigger record than Eddie could if they both prepped for it

I think Thor showed us all when he went for the deadlift record, what kind of a static monster he can be if he trains for it. I think for the most part, he had a different strategy than Eddie. He realised by training too much of big, static powerlifting-ish movements, he'd fall too far behind in movement events, which has very often screwed over other big names. Not to mention that Thor was active for quite a few more years, and seemingly intended to continue his strongman career for many years (until the boxing thing was agreed upon), so he had to think a bit differently to Eddie in that regard. Eddie has said that he only ever wanted to win WSM once, then get the hell out of the sport. Which he did. So he was able to chuck on weight and risk his health to a larger degree. So in that sense its to a degree an unfair comparison.
I think the best overall athlete is Thor, and his titles say he's the best strongman of the two. It would however be really interesting to see what Eddie could've done if he had stayed in the sport for a few more years. Would love to see Eddie and Thor compete against eachother in WSM. In my opinion they're in a different league compared to the currently competing athletes (except Shaw, but he's old, has family and business taking up his mind, not at his peak anymore). I'd love to see more strongman competitions focus on more static events again, but as we've seen with both Thor and Eddie, it gets to a point where they have to carry around so much weight that it's too much of a burden to be worth it. They can't sleep, can barely breathe, has to consume an entire cow after walking 10 meters etc. Alas, maybe the PED's and food science of the future will allow it.

Your analysis shows what I was expecting. At their bests, Eddie was arguably statically stronger, but Thor is the arguably the better or ‘stronger’ strongman when dynamic events are added. I think Eddie’s career was purposely short lived relatively speaking because he put everything on the line to be the best he could. He didn’t look that healthy towards the end of his run. Idea for a new miniseries, maybe:
Best ever at certain events comparison. Pick an event (like Truck Pull, Stones, Yoke, etc) and compare different results over time (maybe some for reps, timed world records, heaviest weights, stuff like that). Might get a bit convoluted once you look at more than just world records (which by itself would make for a short video, haha) but could be really interesting.

I believe that at the time Thor did the 501kg deadlift, that he was most likely the strongest person to have ever lived. Eddie struggled with his 500kg, and he even said himself that he almost died. That was most likely his peak, once your body shuts down like his after a lift, that's a strong sign to stop. However, Thor's 501kg went up without a problem and looked like he still had more in him. He probably could've done 505-510kg that day. I just wish we could've seen him max out his other lifts before retiring.

Eddie was statically stronger for most of these years but Hafthor was the better strongman. Eddie was certainly more specialised in what he was good at. Hafthor caught up with him in lower body strength later but who knows how much Eddie would have improved. Maybe he wouldn't have improved. Tough to say, really.
Personally, I tend to look at strength in terms of maximal strength and thus would give Eddie the edge up to a point when talking about the strongest ever. But I would not mention Eddie in a conversation for the greatest strongman ever, unlike Hafthor. Had Hafthor pulled sth like 510 or 515, I maybe would change my mind about the static strength part.

"but who knows how much Eddie would have improved. Maybe he wouldn't have improved. Tough to say, really."
Considering Eddie "almost died" due to his weigh increase, it's clear he was at his peak. Thor never went for static strength. He's more clever and went for overall strength, mobility and stamina, which is why he's the superior strongman.
Just look at what Thor did to Eddie's DL record. He smashed it. He just realized that being that big meant he would lose pace, and stamina.

It's hard to compare, the reason Eddie always beat Hafthor in static events is because that's what he focussed on, which is why he has so many fewer event wins. Hafthor didn't focus on becoming an absolute giant until the end of his career, while Eddie always did, so I don't think he was capable of improving similarly to how Hafthor did. This means that comparing them becomes exceedingly hard since Eddie was basically always in the version of his physique that Hafthor was by the end. And if we compare for instance Hafthors elephant bar deadlift his max in competition also beats Eddies I believe.
Also can't really compare years in the field since as I remember it Hafthor started earlier, that means that his extra years are mostly during his "not at his peak yet" years. Just because Eddie wasn't competing at that time doesn't really indicate that he'd have won anything if he had, Hafthor barely did.

Another well put together video, many thanks. I always find it fascinating when people discus the greatest athlete in the world of strength, as there is more than one way to judge it, and I guess its mostly subjective? For me, most competitions are a great way to show whom is the best all-round strongman, but not necessarily who is the 'Strongest' In my opinion that comes down to, literally the heaviest weights lifted, which of course tend to be static events. Eddie and Hafthor are two of the strongest men to ever walk the Earth, I would go with Eddie ultimately being stronger statically, and Thor being the better allrounder. By way of an example of my point, I think Brian Shaw has a much better head to head record against Thor, and overall competition wins, obviously including WSM. But I would still lean towards Thor as statically stronger.

Saying it took Thor 4 years to catch up is just so oversimplified to the point that it's a sheer lie.
If I start training deadlift today, and pull 501 tomorrow, then it didn't take me 6 years to "catch up to Eddie".
Eddie was always focussing on becoming a static monster, he trained fundamentally differently than Thor, and with different goals, which is why Thor consistently beat him at nearly all competitions. That's not Hafthor being unable to catch up with Eddie at deadlift, that's Hafthor being a fundamentally more well rounded strongman.
Hafthor didn't start work on becoming a static monster until years later than Eddie, and with a body that makes it an entirely different challenge as well.
Eddie said he was going to do 500, he went of to train for it, then he came back and did it, Thor did the exact same thing, even the time the training took them was relatively equal.

The whole made up "has to be in competition" rule unfairly advantages athletes like Eddie Hall who are literally the co-owner of a mayor strongman organization, because they can simply organize a sham competition build around the record they want to break, and then the athlete in question simply only does that one lift, making the whole thing a sham that unfairly harms less influential athletes.
And no, he didn't handle it, his entire body gave out to the point where he went temporarily blind, his entire system went into shock, he nearly died.
And other deadlifts don't matter, the fact that you bring this up shows me you don't know a lot about strongman, there are a bunch of different deadlift records, and some are far beyond 500 because there are a bunch of factors that simply make them easier, like the height of the bar.

Powerstairs requires extreme fuctional strength and I would use them as better measurement of strength than for example bench press .
Dynamic events , static events , throwing things , pulling things , grip exercises all of those are indicators of persons strength and should all be taken into account when deciding who is overall stronger.
Thats what makes strongman competitions so great they really show us how strong someone truly is. " He is stronger in static events " is just poor excuse fans throw when fighting each other .

I believe there is no comparision between those two. Thor is miles ahead of Eddie. Eddie clearly was at his peak, almost dying and looking like a walking heart attack from the steroid abuse. He is the first strongman that i can remember to have palumboism and that's easy to understand when you hear him talking in his old interviews and how much he was willing to risk his life for it. He clearly reach a new level of static strength because he was willing to sacrifice his health and mobility in a way no strongman ever did. He reach 197 kg i believe, so imagine what kind of weight Thor could push if he was willing to bump his static strength like Eddie did, but that would mean he would not win major competitions like did, the type of cometition that puts your name out there to be considered the strongest. That, Eddie never reached, being a solid winner on high level comps. For Thor to even match Eddie's type of strength on the static lifts, puts him even above Eddie, because Eddie can't hold a candle on Thor's dynamic events. So, we're comparing a strongman that was good in a variety of events, almost with no weakness, with pretty good static strength while even increasing that on the end of his career against the guy that abused drugs and pushed his body to the absolute limit to gain weight and as a result lost a lot of mobility and dynamic strength. Seriously, there is no comparision, Eddie reached his peak and almost payed with his life but Thor never did. We never saw Thor's peak, im happy for his family and for his new life style, but we never saw his peak on the sport. When i saw him getting interview by Arnold on 2018 i believe, i saw the biggest human being to ever walk on earth, he made Brian Shaw look small. What would mean for Thor if he kept pushing his body to Eddie's levels? 220kg? 230kg? What about his static strength that already was at Eddie's level and even greater on lifts like the DL? That's what most people need to understand when they think about Eddie's static strength compared to Thor's, Eddie risked it all and was at his absolute limit, Thor wasnt. Eddie pushed his limits so hard, that his body got deformed, meanwhile Thor is looking like a bodybuilder without even training for it.

And like you said if Eddie wouldn't have retired you have no idea what he would be capable of when it comes to Deadman contest and lifting for records

Love the video and comparison I would have to disagree on one that would be the deadlift yes Hafthor lifted two more pounds but look how long Eddie held the weight he easily could have done more so Hafthor would still edge out Eddie in an extremely close matchup it can definitely be argued for both guys to get the win. I love them both but I would give the slightest edge to Hafthor.

As i always said these past 4 years eddie was the stronger in his prime on static lift, impressive shoulder, chest, quads, back power, but when he has to move hes not on the top, at least they dont have the same genetics eddie is not a 2meters viking haftor is stronger by his nature, eddie put all he could when he won the tittle, he almost died on scene lol, haftor with the training, the weight gained, he became stronger than eddie when eddies retired but i guess witout taking those risk like eddie

Like how they used a bulked Eddie for the image and an image that makes thor look bigger but either way both are strong but I prefer eddie

Eddie hall strict pressed 476 pounds relatively easily..... Thor had to push press 454 and barely got it....

Thor is on video strict pressing 450 on a regular barbell. Eddie turns his axle press into an incline
