    I've always wondered how strong Dorian was. Considering he did his deadlifts last in his back workout and also considering he only pulls the first one off of the floor, I've always figured he had a max deadlift well over 600-650lbs. We'll never know obviously, but it's always fun to ponder.

    • @mastermindmartialarts

  • @bigb1209

    Dorian was actually doing stiff leg deadlifts for hamstrings, not really a regular deadlift for overall power - see how much you can lift. He actually claimed via magazines back then that he did squats on the Smith machine "rock bottom" with 600lbs. Also claimed close reverse grip lat pulldowns with 400lbs, and a bench press on a slight decline using 500lbs. It's also hard to compare a guy who is lifting heavy with not great form and trying to use as much weight as possible to a guy who uses impeccable form with a weight he can control and wasn't worried about ego lifting.

    • @dj_m1999
      @dj_m1999 2 роки тому +14

      Just compare the form in the bent over rows, Yates controls the weight fully, 0 momentum, 0 swinging around like Ronnie who is doing speed reps with as much swinging and momentum as possible

    • @StrengthUniverse
      @StrengthUniverse  2 роки тому +8

      @Big B, It looked like a Romanian Deadlift or Stiff legged but this was simply the form Dorian used. He classes it as a deadlift and it was done at the end of his "back Day". He trains Hamstrings in his "leg day". . He did claim to do 8 reps of 500lbs on bench press but I could find no supporting evidence of this so I didn't feature it.

    • @bumbleofthefluff4418

      No he wasn't, they aren't stiff legged. They became known as dorian dead lifts, traditional but take the weight to just below the knee. Fucking brilliant exercise

    • @tjrocha7732
      @tjrocha7732 Рік тому +1

      Romanian deadlifts are what he was doing. SLDs has the bar start from the ground and touching the ground through each rep while keeping the knees as straight as possible. Romanian deadlifts is starting at the top with the weight and hinging at the hips with knee bend just enough to feel your glutes and hamstrings activate, putting yourself almost parallel with the floor.

    Honestly - 1998 and 1999, along with the 2001 Arnold, were the best versions of Ronnie. 2003 was just the biggest. Obviously Ronnie was the stronger of the two, but the fact that Dorian's training style was so focused on hypertrophic overload clearly showed that pure strength wasn't what he was looking for. Despite this, as all top bodybuilders are, Dorian was incredibly strong for any human of a similar build.

    I wouldn't give the bench press a draw, since Dorian not only did less reps, but also had a spotter, who continuesly touched the bar. This makes pressing way easier, and also you can see that for the last rep his spotter actually helped a lot.

    • @StrengthUniverse
      @StrengthUniverse  2 роки тому +9

      They both had spotters who helped on the final 2 repetitions as stated in the video. Dorian did approximately 50% less reps but he had a 100% greater (double) the range of motion so the weight is moving a much further distance

    • @lk-ip1xs
      @lk-ip1xs 2 роки тому +2

      @@StrengthUniverse I don't totally agree, since Ronnie did 7 reps on his own, and the spotter only touched at the top part of the 8th rep and the entire 9th rep. Dorians spotter on the other hand has touched the bar for every repetition Dorian did, which makes the lift WAY easier. Also Dorians spotter helped a lot on his last rep, you can see his muscles tense as he lifts the bar off Dorians chest. The argument of range of motion applys to ronnies lockout on the first reps, that's true. Still, I doubt that Dorian would have done more than 3 reps on his own. Having a spotter on every rep helps a ton, not just by having to press effectivly less weight, but it also helps with stabilisation. In the past when I was sort of "bro lifting" and had a spotter continuesly touch the bar, I could bang out 8 reps with 130kg instead of my regular 3. "All you bro"

  • @tasos1112
    @tasos1112 Рік тому +1

    you can use geometry to make the leg press numbers more comparable if you know the leg press angle. as explained below, that puts mr. coleman's maximum estimated 1-rep-max about 32% higher than mr. yates'.
    if you remember your highschool trig and physics lessons, the portion of the weight on the leg press machine that you actually have to push against is multiplied by the sine of the leg press angle. if the angle is 0 degrees (horizontal leg press) the sine function is also zero, and so it takes basically no effort to push the weight. if it's 90 degrees the machine is vertical, and so you have to push all of the weight (the sine of 90 degrees is 1).
    to make a long story short, for the lifts to become comparable you'd have to multiply mr. yates' numbers by a factor of sin(45deg) / sin(30deg) ~ 1.4. in other words, were mr. yates to leg press on mr. coleman's machine, he could theoretically do 525 * 1.4 kg = 735 kg for 11 reps.
    if we now translate the weight * reps into a 1-rep-max estimate using the epley formula, we get 1043 * [1 + (8 / 30)] kg ~ 1321 kg for mr. coleman, and 735 * [1 + (11 / 30)] kg ~ 1004 kg for mr. yates.

    Obviously Dorian is simply training to get better an doesn't really care about the weight but one thing that needs to be taken into account is rest periods with this. A lot of bodybuilders hardly rest at all between sets instead of the several minutes most rest before a top set and it makes a massive difference. Interesting to see the difference in conditioning when close up at the end, can really see what Dorian talks about.

I dont know if anyone who has not met Dorian woudl understadn how big he was, but that was his aim. IM sure if trained specifically for strenghht - as it appears Ronnie did during certain phases - he woudl have been handling even crazier poundages.

  • @Wikingking
    @Wikingking 2 роки тому +5

    For the leg press Ronnie's machine means that the net weight is essentially half of the total weight so ~520 kg (+ friction, but it's there for every machine) and Dorian's with the 45° angle is 0,707 so 372 kg. The difference is almost 1.5x to Ronnie, but Dorian did 1,375 times that many reps with a much better form and depth. I think it's close to a draw, but due to Ronnie being in almost contest shape and that repetitions and weight is not linear I think he narrowly won.

    For those who think locking out your legs on a leg press is harder/better than keeping the tension on the muscle, clearly don't know shit about muscle growth and will most likely have smaller muscles with joint problems. The amount of gear these guys were on meant they could wipe their ass and get a better pump in their arms than a naty on arm day.

    Ronnie was a powerlifter prior his BB career, so he liked to keep some of that training style.
    Dorian was very precise and didactic with his perfect form in every rep. The max weight wasn't the goal for him like it was for Ronnie.
    Comparing them in their best shape - Dorian '93 (especially his '93 photoshoot) vs Ronnie '98 Mr.O:
    Dorian's winning poses:
    - Front lat spread
    - Back lat spread
    - Side tricep
    - Abs & thighs
    + (calves and forarms)
    Ronnie winning:
    - Front double biceps
    - Back double biceps
    - Side chest
    - Most muscular
    Both amazing in their best shape. I prefere Dorian overall (Ronnie was really lacking those calves compared to Dorian).
