I've just realised that Meredith would have always known about Nick's ADHD. Because she was his surgeon first and would have known what existing meds he was on. Thry ran all sorts of trsts trying to work out why his kidney was failing. She just accepted it as part of who Nick was. Love that.

I have suspected that I have ADHD for a while now. I didn't know what to do about it. I got overwhelmed by how "making it official" would be so complicated, so overwhelmed that I didn't even bother trying. After watching this scene I called my family doctor and made an appointment to talk to her about ADHD. That appointment was 20 minutes ago. I am really glad that I've got the ball rolling that I've made this next step. Finally so many things about my life make sense. Finally my brain is starting to make sense to me. I'm so happy and relieved that I'm crying.

I... I appreciate this a lot, actually. When I talk about ADHD with people who don't have it, they seem to have this mindset where they can't separate the idea from children. _Kids_ have ADHD, they insist- they don't seem to realize that those kids grow up. We don't outgrow it. We don't disappear. ADHD children become ADHD adults, and I wish more people acknowledged that. Seeing two adults talk about their ADHD in frank, unashamed terms, even using the actual _word_ instead of euphemisms means a lot to this ADHD adult.

I have ADHD, and it’s difficult to deal with and I do get insecure about it sometimes since usually people around me don’t understand unless I remind them that I have it, but I enjoy singing, writing, and acting sometimes but I always have trouble focusing and remembering when to get a task done. And it’s just annoying and frustrating, but I still try not to let it define who I am as a person.

As someone grappling with a pretty likely “undiagnosed 30 year old on the spectrum” situation, this subplot hit hard. When you live your life that long without any professional opinion as to why you’re so weird, it can be kinda earth shattering to know you coulda been building up tools to deal with it this whole time. (Once i get my life a bit more in order i plan on going in to get properly assessed.)

I'm a lawyer with ADHD, and seeing this on a medical/surgeon show made me tear up, because indeed is a struggle to deal with being neurodivergent, specially on work fields that require organization and attention to every micro detail, and even the considered 'good things' like a hyperfocus during a tough case, or how we can think outside of the box. Our minds never shutting down... it gets tiresome to always be the odd one in the room... Grey's approching the neurodivergent people with such gentleness and awareness pulled a string at my heart. The writters are onto something here.

I don’t have ADHD. I’m on the spectrum. But I was misdiagnosed with adhd and it took for an adhd med to almost kill me for them to consider what was then Asperger’s (early 2013 while the DSM-5 was updated later that year to no longer include that diagnosis). But even then, I wonder, if I have adhd, which form would I have? (I have inattentive adhd traits but having almost died from a stimulant adhd medication I would refuse treatment due to trauma. I’d probably go after feeling better after a few therapy sessions.) But as a girl, god knows it may take months, even years to get thoroughly evaluated either way because of medical sexism caused by the system being outdated. Despite being traumatized so not wanting ADHD treatment due to maybe POSSIBLY having it, I still feel like autism isn’t the only explanation. ADHD? NVLD? Dyscalculia? I literally fit all but one of the traits Nick mentioned. Maybe im AUDHD? Im 21 now and was diagnosed as autistic when i was 11. That alone took 7 years and 20 doctors despite having developmental issues since the minute I was born. Still told “ADHD, use this crappy med. Terrible twos. You’re “too normal” you’re this and that”
In other words I relate to this so much I got teary eyed at having two late diagnosed ND doctors on this show.

And it would make sense if she's never been diagnosed--given her addiction problems and being the black sheep in the Shepherd family. For Amelia, all of that was attributed to trauma, but ADHD symptoms and PTSD symptoms are very similar. If the rest of the family is neurotypical--and they were all grieving over the father's death, it would make sense that Amelia's ADHD flew under the radar for years, even in a family of doctors.

A neurosurgeon isn't a psychologist or a neuropsychologist or a psychiatrist. Neurosurgeons have different levels of specialty. I don't know if you watched private practice, but it is specifically pointed out that even neurosurgeons and neurologists have different interpretations of medical symptoms and scans.
That said, even the most well-loved people (and a shepherd family is pretty toxic to be honest so I have questions about that, especially depending on which sister he is to son of) have diagnoses that often get missed because ADHD, like do many other conditions, is often blamed on character flaws rather than recognized as the symptoms that they are.

You do realize Derek has been dead for like a decade, yes? Addams was probably a teenager when Derek died and people go through a lot of changes on this age.
Plus, Derek and Amelia both lived very far away from this boring annoying nephew and barely even saw him or had any relationship with their sister-his mother, so of course they wouldn't know much about him, his behaviour or his difficulties.

It’s a bigger deal than you would think for a lot of people - my ADHD diagnosis saved me. I almost flunked out of premed my first semester of college coming from being a 4.0 student in high school. I thought I was going crazy and deluded myself into thinking that I wasn’t smart enough or capable of doing it. I’d always had a sneaking suspicion I had ADHD, but got away with shitty work habits in high school. Getting a diagnosis, going to therapy, and getting on meds was incredibly affirming, and not only am I getting good grades now, but I am INFINITELY happier. It may not seem like a big deal but it can be and I appreciate that they are trying this storyline.

I was diagnosed with ADD too in my 30s and although I wouldn’t say the diagnostic has saved my life, it surely had a profound impact on it. Everyone of us experience it in many different ways, from how symptoms manifest in our lives to how big of a deal the diagnosis is for you and people close to you. So for once, I do not think Grey’s writers overdramatised this discovery.
