    I cannot watch/listen to this song without tearing up. Renee (Angelica) has lost a child (as have i) and the empathy in her voice is gut-wrenching “There are moments that the words don't reach. There is suffering too terrible to name.
    You hold your child as tight as you can
    And push away the unimaginable.
    The moments when you're in so deep
    It feels easier to just swim down.” Lin is a master with words & emotions & full circles. Elizas ability to forgive him twice borders on the unimaginable. And Lin has made us care about these people who lived 200 years ago as if they were our friends down the street.

     @Jacob Restituto Apparently Alexander was so grief-striken he had to be held up by other people at Philip's funeral because he couldn't stand on his own. To make matters even worse, his daughter Angelica had a mental breakdown due to Philip's death, a breakdown she never recovered from.
    "Alexander was inconsolable, not only grieving over the untimely death of his son, but also blaming himself. At Philip’s funeral, he was so distraught that friends needed to support him physically at the grave. Acquaintances who saw Alexander in the weeks and months that followed were shocked by how changed he had become." "...one friend wrote that he had never seen "a man so completely overwhelmed with grief.""
    "Philip was mortally wounded, and, after he was brought back to New York, suffered for hours while his frantic parents looked on, helpless, until he died. Hamilton fainted on his way to his son's grave, and, according to his friends, the grief and horror of the event was permanently etched into his face thereafter.
    That Hamilton blamed himself for his son's death there can be no doubt, because it is equally doubtless that Philip fell defending his father's honor on the dueling ground. Hamilton was inconsolable following Philip's death; and to add to his guilt and anguish, the Hamiltons' oldest daughter, 17 year old Angelica, with whom Philip had been inseparable, descended irretrievably into madness after hearing of her brother's death."

    Hamilton was (according to Ron Chernow) a very devoted and loving father. He mentions in the biography that none of the children seem to have had a bad word to say about him - not even in private letters where they might have said things in confidence which they never thought would be public. If my memory serves me, every evening after he would come home from work he would spend time with the children.

    • @yunamchill9169
      @yunamchill9169 3 роки тому +3

      See. Everyone sees him as this monster that didn't care about Eliza or led Philip to the duel on purpose, they can only see his flaws and errors. But it turns out, he's certainly not. He was devoted to everyone he loved and I firmly believe that all of the deaths in his life (he was literally a death magnet, poor man) have been affecting his mental health and he probably wouldn't have made some decisions if he hadn't been so woozy with losses all the time. Sure, some mistakes were glaring and he didn't listen to people who were concerned for him, but all in all, when we see him in his entirety, he was a kind devoted man who simply had the misfortune of experiencing more misery in his life than anyone "normal" should have to.

That would most certainly have also helped Laurens. He was also chronically depressed, tried to kill himself several times or didn't care about life. There's also the thing that he possibly had internalized homophobia. A modern therapist could have tried to help him, with meds and sessions and all. The instrument might be a hammered dulcimer, but as a synth effect. It's sometimes used for funerals and church music

    Question: When reacting to the movie, will it be a relaxed watch or commentary on the actual music? I would love to see your raw reactions - love that channel ❤️

    • @theshadowfax239
      @theshadowfax239 3 роки тому +2

      I'm hoping we get more of the raw emotions as we got so much great technical talk in these videos. It would be a nice change of pace

    • @LG_Hakubi
      @LG_Hakubi 3 роки тому +1

      I imagine it will just be a reaction to the play unless the music differs in some way. But I prefer the tech talk; it's a nice change of pace to hear someone knowledgeable talk about something that isn't usually talked about with the musical - the actual music! 😆 aside from knowing a rap reference here and there.
      There are thousands of straight reactions on here and honestly a lot of people have to listen/watch multiple times to even pick up on most things or say something more than 'that sounded amazing/that was sad' (I've watched a bunch of these, people get soooo lost especially around The Room Where it Happens 😂 like "this is a bop but I don't know what's happening")

    There was a double tragedy in Philip's death. There was his death itself, but also his younger sister Angelica having a mental breakdown after the death where she was reduced to being mentally stuck in childhood for the rest of her life. So, in essence, they lost two children that day.

      Also, this song in the Disney Plus version is SUCH a heartbreaker. It's like Lin and Renee's voices have the emotion turned up to 11 and makes it look like they're having to struggle to sing through their tears. GOD it hurts.

    This song is set after his son Phillip was killed in a duel. I don’t remember if this is historically accurate, but in the play Hamilton knew about it and coached his son to aim for the sky (and that would satisfy the grievance). They did not tell Eliza. Phillip’s opponent did not aim for the sky, and Phillip died of his wound.
