This was intense to watch. I’ve been especially looking forward to Jane’s reaction simply because of how angry she was at Alexander’s infidelity. If you guys are reading this, I want you to know that in real life, Eliza forgave Alexander before Philip ever died. She left for a long while and then returned when Philip became ill at some point. By the time he died, Eliza was pregnant with their final child, in the very early stages. They named the baby Philip “Little Philip” Hamilton II in honour of his older brother. Rumour has it that when she died she had a pendant filled with the remaining scraps + ashes of one of his letters she burned. Visitors would recall her vacantly staring at portraits/busts of him and saying she couldn’t wait to see “her Hamilton” again, because it had been so long. She loved Hamilton very much, and regardless of how much his transgressions hurt her, it’s safe to say she forgave him.
Also irl during Philips funeral, Ham couldn't stand and kept fainting cause he was so full of grief and Eliza was completely broken and a journalist wrote that he had never seen two people in more grief than Eliza and Alexander. If only Ham hadn't cheated , Philip wouldn't have had to duel, and they would have been happy :(
Actually, Eacker spoke out against Hamilton accusing him of misusing his position as Inspector General during Adams’ presidency, and of being willing to overthrow Jefferson from his presidency by force, it had nothing to do with Hamilton cheating
With that you have to wonder how much the Hamilton love each other or at least how good of a son and brother Philip was for his parents and siblings to grief like that
Like Kiwi said, they lost their second born as well due to that duel. She stopped speaking, stopped eating and had to be institutionalized. She died not too long after.
I love how “the unimaginable” stands for different things in this process. They’re going through the unimaginable. The death of a child. I have a son and it’s.... unimaginable to think of losing him. They’re trying to do the unimaginable. They’re trying to move through the grief of the loss of their child. Again it seems almost impossible. This child they loved from the second they drew breath is gone? Can you get over that??? Learn to live with the unimaginable. I mean how DO you live with that?? Ugh this song really broke my soul into pieces. But then forgiveness in the midst of the unimaginable??? Really gave me cold chills.
@@roems6396 facts man it feels like on one hand so much weight had been lifted off of hamiltons shoulders, but at the same time he knows exactly how bad he had fucked up and he knows deep down he most def doesnt deserve any of her love, time, or compassion and jt really speaks as to the kind of person eliza was to even ever forgive him for everything he put their family through, but i guess holding grudges is easy; forgiving is harder.
I'm not sure if anyone said this or not, but thought I should add it just in case. Hamilton and Eliza had several children, but the musical primarily focused on Philip due to the duel playing a huge part in Hamilton's life. Philip's death affected the whole family, but greatly affected Philip's younger sister, Angelica. They were super close and Angelica had a mental breakdown that lead her to go into a state of "eternal childhood." Where she refused to believe her brother died and was stuck in the happier times before his death. She was soon diagnosed as insane by her nephew. Her mental state continued to deteriorate and she could no longer take care of herself, leading her to need constant help. I know they didn't have room to put it in the Musical, but I still think it's a huge part in the Hamilton's story, so decided to provide it. All of this pain due to a duel.
Hamilton: The musical that always made me thirsty because I get dehydrated from all the tears. Eliza deserves all the happiness in the world for all she'd gone through! First the affair that Alex made public to clear his name against corruption, Margarita's death (Peggy), then her mother's, then Philip's and then, her husband. After Alex died, she took care of the remaining seven kids by herself, had to paid pay off the massive debt, their home was taken (she managed to buy it back), helped start the orphanage and build the first school in Washington Heights that's free because she believed that everyone should have education. No matter how flawed Alex was, she still stood by him, defended his name from slanderers and still kept the sonnets he made for her in a locket she wore.
@@roems6396 Angelica (the oldest Hamilton daughter) didn't die but she was deeply traumatized by Philip's death which deteriorated her psyche and kept her into an eternal mental state of a child's. She kept asking when will her brother return from 'studying abroad'. Three years after Eliza's death, Angelica died while under the care of her younger sister, Eliza Hamilton Holly.
Running away from a duel that you challenged would be seen as the highest of cowardice and would not only lead to him and his family being further ostracized by the public, but it would be career suicide for someone that wanted to enter politics. Once Philip made the challenge there was nothing Alexander could do but give him advice that could've given him an opportunity to negotiate peace.
In fact, Eliza had seven children. She unfortunately suffered through numerous miscarriages, but they named their next son Philip in their first born sons honour.
If they had mentioned Phillips sister that would've been sad. Poor girl actually went mad and would still try to talk to him after he died. After Eliza got to old to take care of her they put her in a mental facility and everyone would visit her even though she couldn't recognize them. Before his death she was known as very musical, was learning french like her brother, and was said to be a beauty.
I believe the stage instructions after "Forgiveness" are :Alexander shatters: I love how the animatic captures how Eliza finally speaking is what shatters him.
Alexander actually participated in 10 "affairs of honor" and non ever reached the point of actually shooting, so he plausibly assumed it would be the same for his son. The big tragedy is really how the duel transpired and that Phillip's death was basically an accident. Apparently, as both men stood for some time staring at each other Ecker had a muscle spasm causing his pistol to discharge as he was about to throw away his shot.
Well he told his son to participate because Philip wanted to be bold and stand tall like him. If Hamilton said not to go it would've been seen as cowardice for both of them. Philip likely wouldn't be ok with that.
Notice how this animator added in Betsey, who I'm pretty sure is Phillip's sister who became overcome with incredible grief. Could be wrong. But I'm pretty sure.
This song so beautifully puts words to something that there are no words for. Every time I hear this song I tear up. If you get to see the film of the show on Disney Plus, it’s absolutely worth the price of a one month subscription. This song is so beautifully done in the show. ❤️
For anyone who has children, at whatever age, hug them tight and tell them you love them. Although in our society we don't have duels to worry about, there are new fears for every parent in our time now. My son is 15 and at the age where society will look at him differently. Life is too short and we must always do our best to raise our children to be upright citizens. This son really puts things in perspective about whatever parental situation you're in.... you may be divorced or have split custody. One word: Forgiveness.
4:51 And their eldest daughter Angelica had a mental breakdown after her brothers death and seemed to mentally get younger as the years went on. Apparently she'd be found chatting to her brother as if he was in the room, I din't know if she thought she was talking to his ghost or if she'd somehow convinced herself that he was alive
Watch Jane’s eyes when you hear the ensemble sing “have pity” the first time. That’s the part when I first heard the song where I was like “ok, I tried to hold it, but the tears are gonna come”. Looks like it happened to Jane as well. Bet others are in the same boat

Idk the exact time that passed after the Reynolds pamphlet and Philip’s death.
Pointing your gun in the air to shoot during a duel was called "throwing away your shot." That's why it is a major theme in the musical, and they use it for several different meanings.
