Almost 40 years ago Robert Smith said he’d be quitting soon. We all say things when we are young that we meant at the time but realistically were never going to happen. I remember thinking I was old at 25, by the time I reached 40 I realised 25 was young and I thought 40 was old. Now I’m 51 I think 40 was young. Some things never change… So I’m very happy that Robert Smith never did quit.
I want to go back in time to 1984 and tell Robert that not only will he still be playing in a group in 9 years, he will still be in the same group in 29 years... in 32 years... with essentially their 40th anniversary looming.
¡Ha! ¡Ha! Robert was speaking from the shortsightedness of relative youth. Truth is when you make timeless music, it is meant to last, and much of the Cure's music is timeless.
(Reply to Jack Nick) I know right? Mr Thrasher could also offer to pick me up a bottle of my favourite parfum Enjoli Midnight & Black Widow/Raven Red lipsticks which have since been discontinued. 😼
he is a FTM female to male transgender like all the famous artists since at least 100 years.. He was born a woman, that's why you find him soft. Because she is not hiding who she is...
Yeah but he never got the boobs removed. He was far too attached to them and according to simon gallup they'd have to make him sit on the naughty step whenever he'd inadvertently start playing with them, especially on stage. @paola2455
Hi, I just see this the first time. Robert says in the interview that he is feeling to get to the end. That was 1984 (I already listened to The Cure by then) and now I'm looking forward to see them again in November 2022. Robert, you were wrong which makes your fans very happy.
God I love this video. Ironically to what he says abt quitting I’ve just seen them live last week. Seeing your favourite band ever live is the closest to magic you can ever get, so thanks Rob, for everything. Please don’t stop for a long time from now, you and your little band mean the world to me. Makes my silly little heart beat faster every time, I’ll always adore you 🥹🖤
Robert Smith: Gorgeous, Intelligent, Wise Beyond His Years, Ever So Talented & Charismatic, With A Soft Buttery Talking Voice, A Versatile Singer & A One Of A Kind Musical Sound. Loyal to his Wife Mary, whom he has been with since 89?, Is Charitable, Has A Great Sense Of Humor & Is Cute & Funny, Has A Great Personality, Runs Pretty Much Everything For The Cure, & Is In Control Of The Way The Music Is Produced, Takes Care Of Bookings, Travel, Etc. & That Is Impressive ! He Cares About His Fans, & Will Fight For A Cause & The List Goes On. I'm In Love With Him & I Will Always Love Him & The Cure's Music.😍🔥🎵❤️💋🌹😀
Really love finding these interviews! I find their most interesting years from 1980 to about ‘85, so this was a nice treat. It just occurred to me that I’ve spent so much listening to The Cure and reading about the members, but haven’t really seen much of what their actual personalities are like off stage other than a vague idea in my head, just because their interviews are so few and far between. On a side-note, it’s pretty interesting to hear him say he say here he might stop music altogether here, he seems like his mind is made up. I guess he had a change of heart, at least partially.
He was so drugged out in 1984. His manager Chris Parry warned him about the danger - “Parry's second cautionary gesture was made after The Top album in 1984, when Smith's drink and drug problem ("everything but smack") was at its height. "That album was a struggle. Robert looked terrible, puffy-faced, eyes bleary, sores on his lips. He was always listless. I was worried that he was going to have a heart attack” He still looks gorgeous in this though…
Great vid, thanks for uploading as well, my all time favorite band. I don't know what I like more, the Cure, or telling people my favorite band is the Cure and watching their bewildered face because well, they're clueless.
Totally. I was 16 when I saw this interview; I recorded it and watched it about a 100 times! I’ve just watched it again and he’s just as sexy and gorgeous as I thought he was all those years ago! Just lovely.
Very pivotal moment of their career at this time. They'd just sacked Andy Anderson and were just starting with Boris Williams and months later Simon Gallup came back and they made Head on the Door
Yes, he first played with them in 1979 on the Join Hands tour (in which The Cure supported Siouxsie and the Banshees) after their drummer and guitarist had walked out, then later joined them as a proper member from late 1982 until April (I think) 1984.
He is from Crawley, from the posh (for Crawley) bit of Milton Mount. It is middle class London with a tiny bit of Sussex - my working class londoner parents thought they way I pronounce school (rhymes with shawl) and water (long a waarter). Robert lived round the corner from Gareth Southgate (who is 12 years younger). They are both cautious and considered, and use the weight of their ideas for power.
He strokes the guitar not strums it and picks out the notes slowly better but different than the best usually we accept. He mskes Gilmour seem so boring a guitar player because he makes that guitar talk 2U. He was lucky 2 have been brought up listening and influenced by his brothers music at a young age. Then going 2 an enlightened south east school as he did. If he stayed in blackpool, he wud have been stifled surely?
my my his voice is SO soft, it's just like heaven
Like what you did there, heaven indeed. #legend
if you searched for a hundred years you wouldn't find a better voice.....
There is no one more pure, gentle and beautiful

I sometimes do :)
It's so relaxing ❤
His speaking voice was just so smooth........ I'm in love immediately.

Gary Thrasher that's all youd wanna do if u went to 1984? wow, so selfish
¡Ha! ¡Ha! Robert was speaking from the shortsightedness of relative youth. Truth is when you make timeless music, it is meant to last, and much of the Cure's music is timeless.
It is so wonderful to see the 40th Ann. Coming up after all these years. What a wonderful journey for Robert ,the Band, and us fans.

Very, very true except he has been with Mary since around 1974. They met at 14 years old.
His appearance is so attractive
One is in agreement with your statement

Lovely to see the late, great Andy Anderson on drums here.
Interviewer: So Lovecats...
Robert: No
Cried at this - so funny
He is a genius, just that!!!!

Thank you for posting all of these interviews. Priceless.
Thank you :)
Hyæna is a great album he was on. Dazzle and Dear Prudence are part of Siouxsie and the Banshees best songs from their entire catalog.
And yet Dear Prudence wasn't even her song...
@@ArchivedMaterials I love their version vs the Beatles, even though I love the Beatles more than Sioux and the Banchees. If I had to choose.
A great album. I think they did a great cover of Dear Prudence even though I still prefer the original.
Have a listen to JuJu

his band had a great influence on the most famous legendary russian rock-band kino
Who?what?why?...........????????
He’s so shy and modern day interviewers don’t get that. They’re all in his face and it’s just like.... no?

Lovedogs 🤣🤣🤣 I think Lovecats is a song that stands on itself, it's funny and singable and nothing else 😊❤️ his voice is something indescribable
Robert Smith from 1984-1986 is my favourite era of him as he was so hot back then 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
Great reason.

Роберт. Всегда был очень серьезным. В своем искусстве. Как будто даже ревнивым
Nice video !

“the top” days
10:24 I'm so glad he changed his mind...
I fucking love his accent. Posh.
Paul Metzger he's from the south of england and anyone not completely growing up in rubbish there sounds like that
I know where he is from- Crawley. And his accent is upper middle class.
He sounds like Bowie to me or maybe Marc Bolan
imagine having achieved that much at 25??
Andy Anderson wrote to me only last year...I cant believe he is dead....God bless him...in my opinion the best cure drummer
37 years later and still the same black hair
❤❤
Wow! He looks like Tre Parker!
Professor Ditch Digger hrs in south park they love him
he just did the lovecats to flex
huh?
He sounds like Ricky Gervais when he's talking in this interview.
Excuse me
he talks about Banshees... was he with Siouxie and the Banshees?
Yes, he first played with them in 1979 on the Join Hands tour (in which The Cure supported Siouxsie and the Banshees) after their drummer and guitarist had walked out, then later joined them as a proper member from late 1982 until April (I think) 1984.
decafcoffee73 yes!
decafcoffee73 and in the album with Steve the glove , blue sunshine. His voice is dreamy in perfect murder. Especially the end of the song.
He appears in “Dear Prudence” videoclip.
Note the BASS player......Not Simon but Phil!
It's actually Phil Thornalley, Michael Dempsey left at the end of 1979.
❤
is it hot in this comment section or is it just Robert Smith?! 🔥🔥🔥
Haha! Robert is extremely adorable in this video.

Little Marcy feld was a flash little sod........a good mate from sunny Stoke Newington........
7:50 did he say “there’s a galaxy inside my head”?
He says '... it doesn't rest, it gallops around inside of my head.'
No, he said "..it gallups around inside my head."
