How to get out THAT screw! - 2015 Ford Transit 250 - Front Blower Motor Resistor Replacement

  • 2015 Ford Transit 250 3.7L. Front blower motor resistor was faulty. Van only had high speed on the front blower. This is the same design for pretty much all of the Transits. In theory it's a simple job. Lower glove box, disconnect connector, remove screw, remove resistor... install is opposite of removal. That is exactly what you get from service information. No mention at all about those HVAC pipes an inch above the screw and how you're supposed to actually GET to the stupid thing to remove it...
    You can't see the head of the screw but it is a T15 not a Phillips/star. When it was most of the way down I was able to use a stubby ratcheting wrench with a Torx bit but once it got higher up that no longer worked. The only thing I found that worked was a nut driver with a u-joint adapter and a stubby torx socket. You're on a crazy angle, it's very difficult to get on the screw, you'll only get a few small turns at a time before having to reset, etc, etc. It's a tight fitting screw in plastic so very hard to turn with your fingers unless it's almost completely out. If you have a very small pair of pliers you might be able to use those to turn it some of the last ways. Otherwise if you wrapped the screw with emery cloth sandpaper for extra grip that MIGHT help..? Ultimately there's no easy way to get that screw in and out. It WILL take time and test your patience but it CAN be done!

    It's actually a t20. I have to change these all the time

      @James Cunningham Good to know! Thankfully I've only had to do a few of these. Sometimes I'm guilty of using the first torx bit that fits rather than making sure it's not actually the next size up...

    I had to replace mine. Harbor Freight has a ratcheting right angle screw driver which is perfect for this. Sku 92630 and they are only 2.99. It comes with T15 bit

    i took a utility knife and cut the foam insulation that is on the lines above the area where the screw is , made the hole bigger with my finger then a 1/4 extension would fit into that hole a torx bit on the end ..and a small ratchet... took out the pesky screw in a few turns. i replaced that screw with a number 2 robertson screw., or you could use a 1/4 inch hex head screw with a magnetic socket..since i am up in canada i use robertson screws..

    I have 7 Transit's in our fleet. 2015 to 2019. Every one of them has needed a blower first, then a year later, the resistor. I always replace the Torx screws with hex head screws, much easlier to work on.

    Actually, there is an access hole in the metal 'beam' right above the T15 screw that you can easily remove using a short extension and a 1/4" rachet. Just feel for the access hole and rip a small hole through the foam padding for your short extension and T15 bit to fit through from below, then pop on your ratchet from above the metal support..

    Done that job 3. Times b4 76k miles and 4 yrs! It is a MOTHER!😅😮 and I have small hands. It's also fun to do the rear 3rd screw on the blower motor. Did both these outside in Minnesota winter as high and med roof vans don't fit in garage. Lol. Yes u will want to get a few of the smallest 1/4" drive ratchet set ups u have. The tools he has out r all good options. This is typical Ford idiot engineering if u ask me. Im mostly coming from Toyota Honda stuff. Ud never ever find these situations on a Toyota. I applaud all you Ford Technicians you guys earn ur pay!

    Why did It need changed? Mine only had one speed is that the fix?

    • @eurbanautotech
      @eurbanautotech  Рік тому +1

      @Kyle Wolfgang Hmm... Yeah, I'm pretty sure this only had HI..? That's the normal dead giveaway for a bad resistor pack. Older vehicles pretty much all had the HI setting bypass the resistor pack altogether. So if you had only HI then that would be a dead giveaway for a bad resistor pack and if you had no settings at all then it wasn't the resistor pack. However, some of the newer vehicles DO have the HI setting go into the resistor pack. It doesn't go through any of the resistors of course but does go in one terminal and out another. So I have seen some newer vehicles that didn't have any speeds at all and it actually was a bad resistor pack.
      Having said all that I'm pretty sure this vehicle only had HI and no lower settings. If you're missing some settings then it's probably the resistor pack. Pretty common for them to burn up the connector too. So if you see any black/melted plastic you'll need to replace the connector again or you'll be changing that resistor pack again in short order.

    • @eurbanautotech
      @eurbanautotech  Рік тому

      @2000bruins It could be a run of bad parts or a bad design. I have seen quite a few of these fail. If you're changing that many of them then it might not be a bad idea to throw a new blower motor in there if you already haven't. If it stalls out at any time then it would definitely draw too much current through that resistor pack and damage it.
