    Has got this NOCO GP-40. The man ual was not good. Nothing about charging the unit. But did understand that is was the input USB. Since I was on vacation and did buy this. Use the laptop usb output to the GP-40. The input was the old usb connection and not the mini c-type. It worked very well. One of the best to get

    In reality, 0 0: 3 8: 3 0 from the time you pressed start, to the second time you tried to start the car... AND IT STARTED (from DEAD/dead) Impressive !!!

      A lot of these small jump packs are very impressive. I ran into an issue about a week ago where I needed to move my 3-Series, and could not find any key but the valet, and had the battery disconnected. I was able to start the car using the posts under the hood only powering the car from a small jump pack similar to this one.

      Enjoy it! The next time they go on a sale I'm going to pick up a 2-3 more so I have one in each car (in case I forget to grab the bag) and have a spare at home charging just in case.

      Just wondering....don't see it covered in the manual....is this thing intended o be kept in the vehicle? I'm concerned about how it will be affected by cold/hot temperatures. Any ideas?

    • @DriverJsGarage
      @DriverJsGarage  4 роки тому +1

      I've kept it in my vehicle since buying it. Where I am it gets hot and humid as well as super cold. I'm actually doing my seasonal check up I do on my cars and I'll be going through my emergency kit to make sure it's all good, which means checking on the battery of this guy after it being outside in the cold for months, then outside in the hot for a little over a month. I would imagine it should be fine unless it were left in one extreme or the other for too long. Cold usually makes batteries drain faster, and hot can damage batteries, if excessively hot.

    Thank you! Thank you! Your vid helped me navigate using the NOCO this past weekend in a pinch. My battery was completely ‘dead dead’ too and I had to use the override feature. But it started up like a charm and still remained on green power level. Great product.

      These are amazing! I'm going to be doing a short follow-up to talk about how long the battery holds a charge, and so far I'm not at all disappointed, and plan to buy one more unit for each of the vehicles in my fleet.

      The case is a bit on the bulky side, but it keeps everything nicely together, instead of it being loose either in an emergency kit or glove box, etc.

    I jumped a dead battery reading 3.5 volts with this thing straight out the box with just one one bar on the charge indicator. Worked like a champ.

      I had to jump my truck off a completely failed battery just a few weeks ago and didn't even have enough voltage to turn on the interior lights or have the electronic locks cycle, and it started right up. It's nice insurance to have a battery pack in your car.

  • @archtopp1

    Brilliant engineering on the car. If the battery is dead you can’t get into the trunk. The battery is in the trunk but you jump start the car up front.

    • @DriverJsGarage
      @DriverJsGarage  3 роки тому

      Edit: I can not believe I actually over-looked the fact that the E46 has a lock cylinder on the trunk. Newer BMWs do not and I didn't think a thing about it ahead of time to look, and so my brain went out auto pilot and I started talking about newer BMWs. Older cars however do have trunk locks. As does my E46 as I had to use it just a few months ago on a really cold day when my battery decided to call it quits.

    The extra wall wart is great but if someone looking for a good wall wart to give a better charging (time) one can always look for an after market wall wart. As long as the thing plugs into the household wall receptacle and provides a decent charging, then it doesn't have to be a NOCO brand.

    • @DriverJsGarage
      @DriverJsGarage  2 роки тому

      Yeah the USB power charging block isn't necessary to get a NOCO one, as with any interchangeable wall outlet for a charger, you only really need to match the power outputs and connector type.

      Glad you found it helpful! You're actually spot on with what the USB out is for, you can use it as a power bank as well.
      While I personally wouldn't recommend using it for a phone charger, as you could run the booster pack too low to help jump start you in an emergency, in a dire situation I could see doing it, but I personally wouldn't use it as a daily power bank, and would just get a separate power bank.

    So I’m borrowing mine from a friend and when I turn it on it only goes up to the yellow bar. And it’s been plugged in for more than a minute and I am not getting a response from my vehicle at all. Does this mean I need to go charge it up to Green before I should try

    • @DriverJsGarage
      @DriverJsGarage  3 роки тому

      It definitely shouldn't take that long to charge if the charger is good and the jumper pack is healthy, but I think even with it in the yellow it should start your car unless it's extremely dead. When my car battery was very dead I had to use the override mode... But... be very cautious when using the override mode, because I believe it turns off the other protections on the NOCO boost box.
      Straight from NOCO's site "Before using the Manual Override feature, make sure the battery clamps are connected to the correct polarity battery terminals and the X-Connect Clamps are connected to Boost. To use the Manual Override feature, press and hold the Manual Override Button (a red exclamation point icon inside a red circle) for three (3) seconds. The white Boost LED will flash “On” and “Off” indicating you have successfully entered into Manual Override and it is ready to jump start your vehicle."

      Without looking at how you have it connected (both the cables to battery and the cables to the jumper pack) it's hard to say. It could be that you got a bad unit and need to replace it (in which case I would contact NOCO), or the connection to the booster pack is reverse or the battery connections are reversed. I would double check those things and if your pack is setup right contact NOCO as it could be a problem with the jumper pack.

    • @DriverJsGarage
      @DriverJsGarage  2 роки тому

      It's possible you could, it's essentially just a battery providing juice in a similar way to one of the cell phone charger packs would do a cell phone. HOWEVER I personally wouldn't do that.
      If it's not plugged into a wall outlet you'd probably drain the battery in the boost pack pretty quickly, and even if you plugged it into the wall while connected I can see risks to overheating the pack, or causing issues with it's ability to hold charge since it would be in constant charge/discharge at the same time.
      If you want something you can leave connected all the time to keep a charge I would suggest a battery tender instead... something along these lines: amzn.to/3GxLetD or amzn.to/3faWPTh
      But I also saw something like this : amzn.to/3zQwO51 that has a connection you can leave hooked up to a bike, ATV, SXS where the battery is covered and it has a terminal attachment that you hook to the battery and then put the cable for the booster pack to attach to outside of the location. Seems interesting and something you might be able to do to also connect a tender easily as well.

      Again not giving advice on what you should do, just reporting on my experience with jump packs so far.
      I wouldn't leave it in the passenger compartment if you can avoid it, as I believe due to windows the temps in there get hotter in the summer than say the trunk.

    What are your thoughts on charging a car battery( to get the car started) using the vehicle's cigarette's lighter outlet?

    • @DriverJsGarage
      @DriverJsGarage  2 роки тому +1

      Depending on how dead the battery is, it might work. It would be an interesting experiment to try out and see if you could get the minimum charge out of a battery that is just dead enough not to crank the car. Based on some of the other jump packs I've used it takes ~5-10% charge depending how flat your battery is.
      There might be risk to damaging the battery if it gets too low for too long though, so there is a bit of risk involved. In an emergency I would probably do it though (thinking someone is hurt or life threatening conditions / temps. Not just 'oh no I need to get to work'

    • @DriverJsGarage
      @DriverJsGarage  2 роки тому

      If you're worried about it going dead while in the garage, another option could be something like a trickle charger. I have one for my cars, and it's great, it has ends that i can hook up and leave the charging cord attached to the battery and when I'm ready to charge just take the cable out of the hood/trunk and leave it in the gaps around the hood/trunk when it's closed to plug into the battery.
      There is one from NOCO: amzn.to/3qwOSxu
      and
      I have the BatteryTender brand one: amzn.to/3eKG98d and I bought their 2 foot cable piece for each car I wanted a charger in. - 2 foot cable - amzn.to/3qzbVrn

      I don't have it any more unfortunately to give you exact numbers on these things, as this particular unit was stolen from my truck. From what I recall I could jump a car at least a few times before having to recharge (but it would depend on how bad the battery was, and outside temps.). Charing was a few hours from dead to full. But I don't think it was any worse than the Galaxy S8+'s charge time that I had around the same time.

      And it would really depend on how much juice it had to use for each boost, did it start right away, how dead was the battery, what was the ambient temp. I unfortunately didn't get to test that before the unit was stolen from my truck.

    • @DriverJsGarage
      @DriverJsGarage  4 роки тому +7

      This entirely depends on the climate where you are. Extreme temps will impact how long batteries hold charge and how fast they discharge while in use.
      For perspective I live somewhere that in the summer is regularly in the 90F range, and in the winter easily dips below -10F. I left in my vehicle for over 6 months without a charge, pulled it out and was still able to jump my towing / hauling rig (the 03 Yukon in my videos) without a fresh charge.
      I've decided I'll likely charge mine right before winter and right after winter as a precaution, as well as any time I use it, just so I know it's ready to go. I'd rather not push the limits and end up stuck because I was too lazy to charge.

    Whats the minimum battery % required to jumpstart a vehicle

    • @DriverJsGarage
      @DriverJsGarage  2 роки тому +1

      There isn't one simple answer for this. There are quiet a few variables including: how low your battery is, how much draw your vehicle uses, ambient air temps (colder temps make batteries discharge faster), etc. Larger engines with a more severely drained battery are going to require more juice to jump than a small engine with a lightly drained battery and either in colder climates will likely require more power as well.
      Based on the estimates provided by NOCO on how many jump starts a pack should do (20) I would estimate that about 5% is your minimum, but results will probably vary based on other variables as well.

I'm from MN, but when the Star's left in the mid 90's I had no team, so a few seasons with no team I was cheering for, so when the Nordiques had moved/become the Avalanche, I adopted them as my new team. In 2001 when the Wild started playing I didn't want to abandon my adopted team I just started wearing whichever team's gear I felt like that day.
      I love both teams, and am still a huge fan of both. On games where they play each other I wear both team's gear. (Except in the play offs, then I have to wear my Wild gear, because I've seen the Avs win 3 cups already... and the best I've seen out of the wild was a Conference finals in 03. After the Wild dropped the series to the Blues in 2022, I was absolutely thrilled to watch the Avs absolutely dismantle the Blues, and eventually snatch the cup away from the Bolts.
      TL;DR: from MN, Av's fan after the stars departed and never abandoned them even though I'm also a Wild fan.

Did the light on the pack come on when attached to the battery? Did you try using the override mode? (See the manual for warnings first) Did you leave the charger attached and on as the manual indicates for lower voltage batteries? How much charge did your booster pack show? There are lots of things this could be that aren’t the booster pack. There could easily also be more wrong with your vehicle than a dead battery, but you might also have a defective pack. If you checked the things I mentioned you should reach out to the manufacturer and get their recommendation next.
