You teach more in your videos than my old overpriced meathead of a coach and I’m very grateful to you for that. You make Muay Thai/MMA education more accessible to people that desire to be a part of it And you also aren’t a jackass!
I'd rather keep my whole foot grounded instead of being on my tippy toes because it makes it harder for opponents to sweep me, but it does require some flexibility for roundhouse kicks to the head, especially against taller opponents
@@cheshire_skatkat9093 the thing is that there's no right or wrong here. You can throw a kick both ways and make it work. That's why I hate clips as this one. They claim to be absolute while not even telling you half the info you'd need to know. The entire format is just about showing off rather than about teaching a lesson.
You turn your hip through your opponent so that when you snap you're making contact. For me this is the easiest way to explain it. Like here you can see that his hips are lined up with the center of the bag before he snaps. This helps with spatial awareness and physical awareness as far as the positioning of your body in relation to your opponent. It's not exactly the same, but that is kind of the policy that I'm used to when it comes to hooks. You bend right before you make contact and then you aim through your opponent. The positioning of your shoulder is very important in regards to how much power you can put through and how you can avoid hurting yourself. Much like the hip and the round house.
Thanks for the content Jeff 🎉 I have followed your channel for a while and even shared some of the videos to my sparring partners to educate ourselves 🥊 Keep up the great work 💪
Thank you so much for the vid, I come from karate, and I've switched to kickboxing not too long ago. the coach at my gym doesn't explain a lot, and in karate we snap kick all the time, like the 2nd example you've shown. deploy the leg first, and then snap to make contact. Ive been doing that for so long i never questioned it, and I kept seeing that my opponents wouldn't be too hurt by my kicks and I always had my foot so swollen and rly hurt, to the point I had to take breaks because I couldnt kick or move around anymore. Such simple advice but lifesaving for someone who always had a bad habit and never second guessed it😊
I am now in my mid 50s , and when I watch you Jeff gets me buzzing and inspired , I just wish I was still like you, but I have few injuries trying to recover from. But the young people of today should follow you and be inspired and train like you do. Also I have noticed you are very open minded about other martial arts and don’t neglect them, just like Bruce Lee! Respect to you for that! ❤
You are good u not dropping heand so they can't overheand you like lots of people do and you use weght of your own body with twisting properly. Well done
Crowbar kicks. The knee is bent and when the snap happens the Crux of the foot and shin straighten out against the target as best they can depending on commitment
Very nice technique, what is your thoughts on pat barrys style of leg kick, i use that myself, obviously nowhere near as good, but i use it in muay thai and kickboxing, i feel like that kind of leg kick has more power but i feel like it leaves me open, because of how you have to drop your hip a little lower to do his style of leg kick.
I kick like #2 (Karate base), but power into it like #3. 😊 Gotta condition the top of your feet and keep your toe pointed! [though I will admit, it doesn't crack as hard as a Muay Thai kick (but is less telegraphed].
@@jarivanlennep3979 yes after you make contact. It should kind of "bounce" you off the bag. But I'm sure it will take months to get the timing correctly
i never even had the option of not doing the tippie toe or full hip rotation simply due to my subpar flexibility. guess that has it upsides 😂 gotta cut the half-rotated diagonal-ish kind of strike kick some slack though. it can be extremely quick to perform and has a solid oomph once you get a feel for whipping it out. it is also very energy efficient.
In kickboxing i was taught to fully pivot my heel almost 180 the way you're doing it, but when I was training in thailand recently they told me to focus on developing hip flexibility and get the hip over without completing pivoting the heel, and that i would generate more power that way. It does seem that's how a lot of thais traditionally throw roundhouse kicks. What do you think of this?
I agree, it helps to not commit so much on the kick while still generating a lot of power. This tutorial is exaggerated a bit, to teach beginners how to fully turn their hips over. Its just like the hook, we are taught to fully pivot, but rarely do we see guys pivot their lead foot on the hook (watch mike Tyson or canelo on the heavy bag for example)
Nice job breaking it down! I keep one sand filled wavemaster relic around for this purpose. One hard kick that strikes with the top of the foot to the rough sand filled base, never see a bad kick again 😂😂😂 Suddenly height, rotation and the shin all come naturally 😂
You should bring your knee through straighter then do all the other stuff you said. As well as show people how to protect their face by keeping your hands up. Leaning back further faster on the pivot while turning the hips over will increase speed and power. That’s why the knee should come through straighter. Try it. I bet you’ll kick harder.
@MMAShredded my kicks are bad, I lack experience and practise(because life) and this is one of the best instructionals I've come across. Very well explained, very good. This wil definetly help me with correcting my technique. Thanks 👍
I find attempting to turn my hips over without a bag difficult. (Shadow boxing) if I don’t put the full effort in, my hips get lazy (like your how not to kick). Any tips!
What do you think about this: Not leaning back when you kick, it's a little unnatural at first, but then you can see that you can make some dangerous combos It's a little weird to explain this with just words, but i hope you get it. Try it!
@@MMAShredded I try to, but doing so sacrifices my hip and leg position. There's like a weird dead zone where the optimal position for my hip rotation is. I can go above it and below it but not where it actually needs to be for a good powerful kick. It's a hard one to explain. But I'll use this video as reference and keep working on the foot pivot and hopefully I can forcefully overcome it. 👍
@@Samlli I'm no expert, but if your not swinging your leg before turning hip, and pivoting on toes. Best way to do is to watch Jeff kick, and keep kicking. The hip rotation is in the kick! Dont overthink it.
You might not be finding the correct balance point. You could try leaning back more and practicing just getting yourself up to the point just before you snap the kick and see if you can't balance there, which is good practice for when your kicks get caught and you're standing on one leg. The correct way is to pivot on the foot but it's not the only way to roundhouse. There's a few pros who just angle their foot out, or step out, before rotating.
I dont understand when you say make contact before snapping. How do you even do that? You need to put a snap in it just before making contact. if you already make contact than its pretty much done
i mean, yea youre totally right thats perfect technique for max power, but that doesn't mean that the other 2 'worse' kicks arent still highly effective weapons, the lowest of low effort flop it up roundhouse ends up acting like a a jab - a less invested less telegraphed short to chip away/distract/rangefind, and the more karate style snapping kick have a whole bunch of applications - faintint, speed off the lead leg, harder to catch n sweep, and works better as a counter as your dont need momentum on your side
Yeah I've been in Jeet kune do in karate all my life and you have to condition the foot otherwise you will break it but if you've been doing all your life and you condition on trees you'll be okay

One question. Normally if I kick I first lift my knee a bit but some Thai fighter they kick with outstretched leg.
Im a little confused. You make full contact THEN snap? I thought you snap the kick to get the full contact?
you want to drive the shin across the target before snapping to kick THROGUH the target versus only kicking halfway through
