- A compilation of some Eric Dickerson's college highlights. I do wish that the video was longer, but this video contains literally all of the SMU game footage I could find on youtube (not counting the Texas highlight that everyone has seen).

FOR A LONG TIME PEOPLE SEEMED TO FORGET ABOUT ERIC IN THE GREATEST RUNNING BACK OF ALL TIME DISCUSSION...NOT ME.
These video clips show Dickerson to be a Heismann level tailback, but they also show the absolute brilliance of QB Lance McIlhaney in running the option.
He is as underrated as any college QB ever.
Dickerson was the most elegant runner Ive ever seen. He was like a gazelle in the open field. Dorsett was a close second.
No you got it wrong....Tony Dorsett was the most elegant.....only RB to have won a college NC and a Super Bowl, the Heisman and HOF in both NFL and college.
@@robertwolf3969 lol! I think it’s a matter of preferences. And I respect your opinion. True that TD had the most decorated career between the two. My comment was only based on individual running styles. They were both very smooth runners, but IMO the difference that made Dickerson more elegant was that beautiful, long stride. And understand that this comment is coming from a lifelong Cowboys fan who idolized TD growing up and loved Emmett Smith.
Dickerson was more elegant than Dorsett. Dorsett was smaller and had a shorter stride.
Whats ironic is Eric has always been a hooved animal running wild from College as a Mustang, to LA as a Ram and then a Colt. Nothing could be more fitting for one of the greatest backs of all time.
True! Almost 4,000 rushing yards in his first 2 NFL seasons! (1983 & 84)...Great days! I was 20 and 21 in 1984! Just a fantastic time to be young!

How is that irony?
He always got accused and of not playing hard, not running full speed. What people who said that failed to realized is that he was 6’3”, and that height fooled a lot of people about his speed and quickness. Watch all the DBs who are chasing him in these highlights. They are running full speed, wide open; if Dickerson was loafing, he would have been exposed. He was truly amazing.

Best running back I ever saw live. Saw him a bunch as a kid . My uncle would take me to games to watch SMU. Robbed in 1982 of the national championship after beating Pitt in the cotton bowl .
Marino threw that game. He was very good at it.

Lance McIlheny was straight up 100% badass. Watch him block on these plays. Fearless. Loved that dude.
Lance was technically perfect and way beyond most college quarterbacks...very underrated

Think "Tailback" and you immediately get image of Dickerson 7+ yds deep...neck roll and all. What a talent!

I'v said it 1000 times....He's the best player to touch a football I ever saw. Too big, too fast, and too strong for everybody around him, and it was like that in the pros too. He was just a phenom.........Great Highlights

@@krisschedler3947 The Cowboys had ppl to look at Dickerson and his potential but Gil Brandt felt that he was too big 6-3 220 and fast 4.30 to play HB in the NFL. So they passed up a chance to try and draft him and he was a fan of Dallas in his early years in high school.He repaid Dallas by breaking the NFL postseason record for rushing yds that was held by Jim Brown(237) with a new mark of 248 which still exist.

Dickerson was flat out awesome in college. If you were old enough to watch those games, you know it was the quarterback that made those runs possible. McIlhenny was the maestro of option of football. He would pitch the ball at precisely the right moment, usually at the last second before getting throttled. People that say all he did was hand the ball off to DIckerson have no idea how difficult that was. He took a lot of pounding too. He fooled cameramen on numerous occasions. Wasn't the greatest passer or runner and never put up big numbers, but man he made that team go. He wasn't Pat White, Crouch, Harris, Frazier or any of those dudes, but for what his job was, no one did it better. I saw a poll ranking the greatest option quarterbacks ever and Tim Tebow was number one. Guys like Pat White, and Darien Hagan were also there. They weren't option quarterbacks. They were dual threat quarterbacks. I don't think any one of them could run it like McIhenny.
Yeah, McIlhenny was the Man. That was fun football to watch. Sad we'll never see that again.

I’m old enough to have watched those games (after SMU was off probation in 1981 and had no televised games-what a shame). Mcllhenny was a straight up bad ass. Sure, Dickerson and James were great, but Mc kept it going with Reggie Dupard and Jeff Atkins in 1983, when SMU went 10-1 and only lost to unbeaten Texas. Mc ran that option to perfection. Watch the 1983 Cotton Bowl, when SMU beat Pitt 7-3 and he outplayed Dan Marino!
@@90srule96 Like the name. Yes, I remember. Not sure what happened to Marino and Pitt that year. They started off well. That SMU team was fun to watch. It was different back then. Now? ugghhh! I hate to sound like one of tbose older people that sing how great things used to be, but...in this case, it applies.

saw dickerson the 1st time in 1978 as a 5th grader , my school played sealy in regional playoffs in pasadena . at the time our school bus had juinor high grades on the bus with the high schoolers and would drop us off at the juinor high , then the high schoolers would go to school 5 miles up the road . the star players on our team were cousins kenneth desohotel who was a dynamic tailback and his cousin charles deshotel a dual threat qb all they kept saying is that if we stop him they would win !! our school had just shocked the 2a world beating the number 1 team in state that year the newton eagles 31-15 , we lost our all district fullback robert sanders got hurt vs newton and didnt play in the sealy game and the districts best defensive lineman of the year todd shellhammer hurt his knee in the 1st quarter of the sealy game. and wouldnt return . we would loose too them 21-7 . but you saw the dominance of dickerson whos team would go on too win state . in high school , college and pro dickerson was the smoothest running back i ever saw . if if you just lined him up in the I formation and run him 25 to 28 times a game its no match . if he had stayed with the rams his whole career no telling how many yards he would have gotten . he is my all time favorite rb of all time .

oh yea they should have won the national championship in 1982 after beating pitt , they didnt loose a game that year had a tie but still no losses at all they got robbed that year just to give jo pa his 1st national championship , it should have went to SMU . the irony of it all is they would give SMU the death penalty about 4 yrs later , penn state and joe pa have that scandal 30 plus years later a slap on the wrist like nothing happened , SMU still has never recovered from the death penalty !!

Many young people (maybe correctly 🤔) think Adrian Peterson Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith are the goats of the game. They dont know about, the Metcalf family, not just D.K. and a long list of backs they don't know about, but there are some great ones that weren't busts in the NFL. There was a very good back in the backfield with Eric, Craig James a white bro who was as good at SMU as Dickerson, but Dickerson outshined him in the pros, but still a great back.

Southern California was in the running for Dickerson while in high school.
Dickerson was definitely one of my favorite all time backs, but shotout to his teammates blocking. Everyone blocked!!! Some beautiful schemes
What was so great about the 81 season is that offensive line was supposed to be mediocre at best and they far exceeded mediocracy. Even in 82 they were supposed to be a little above average and they were awesome. Just goes to show you what the so-called experts now
He was a way more violent runner in college than he ever was in the NFL..

I LOVE THAT RUN! That may be the best run by anyone ever in the NFL! He just BLAST off tackle and pure speed & power! He has a few major NFL records still....here's 3 for you....#1 Most yards single season= 2,105 (84')....#2...most yards by a Rookie= 1,808! (83')..his first 2 seasons he ran for almost 4,000 yards! ( NFL record!) also fastest RB to 10,000 yards ( only 91 NFL games!) He was awesome!

Dwight Love Bo’s was better by a little. That was literally the fastest run in NFL history. The coasting into the tunnel was just the icing on the cake
Probably my 2nd favorite all time college runner after Curt Warner Penn State, then Eric, then tied for third Ki-Jana Carter and Larry Johnson PSU. Especially Larry because I was there when he broke 2,000 yards.
Dickerson was great at SMU, but he'd have won the Heisman if he went to USC.

He was special. What he did with the Rams without an o-line is something.
Rams had a monster O-Line when Dickerson was there. They never had a QB, that was the problem.
BO, Herschel, Dickerson, Dupree, etc were indeed great, but they were men among boys. They were the same size or bigger than opposing linebackers and defensive ends. Even some defensive tackles. Defensive Backs didn't stand a chance. All that has changed and now your tailbacks are facing people like Clowney , Watt, Boda, and other freaks on the other side of the line. The game has evolved, and you could argue in favor of the defense.

He was the primary runner. Dickerson had 232 carries to Craig James's 197. In their senior years and 790 to 775 in their careers. So we don't have to imagine.
Eric Dickerson was part of a tandem at SMU. Craig James as a part of the Pony Express.

Had no idea that SMU used to play at Texas Stadium. I always thought they were at the Cotton Bowl.
UH was playing in the Astrodome around this time too, I believe.
Texas Stadium was our home field. The SMU stadium has only been refurbished for a few years now(back on campus)
I get a kick out of all the idiots posting about how this team got caught for being paid, like this was the only team that ever got paid in college football or sports in general. and like somehow that diminishes eric Dickerson's greatness.
Exactly! Alabama was supposed to get the Death Penalty but the NCAA saw how it decimated SMU, USF and Wichita State so they stopped using it...

He looked very different as a pro runner than a college runner. In college he looked like he was running full speed and sprinting and in the pros he looked like he was jogging even though he was always faster than the NFL defenders. He looked underweight in college for the NFL and based on his footage here I would not have predicted the results he achieved in the NFL.
I'm not sure if he weighed 225 in college like he did in the pros (he looks much less in his collegiate film) but he looks more like a basketball player than an NFL suitable RB. Or maybe he just wore much more padding in the pros.
One other thing I have a hard time getting past in this film - he just looks weird with the #19 because as on only-pro fan, I only first saw him as a Ram with #29 which he looked super cool wearing, along with the mouthpiece, goggles, and all that padding.
If they had the transfer portal back then I would have escorted Craig James to it, no way I would have had Eric Dickerson sharing carries.
The only team that could hold him under 200 yards was SMU when they subbed his backup in.
