Just thought I’d mention guys first of all thank you for all the support! And second, yes it was a mistake on my end on who voices tails in Lost World! So sorry about that!!
I've actually been saying this for a long while, but Colleen is actually my favorite Tails' VA out of all of them, her voice for me just fits so right on him, and that's coming from someone who's list of favorite english VAs is a mess, for example, my favorite Sonic voice is Jason Griffith from the 4Kids Era, while my favorite Shadow is David Humphrey from the Adventure Era, and my favorite Amy is Cindy Robinson from the current Studiopolis Era, my favorite Knuckles is Scott Dreier also from the Adventure Era, etc. While for his character arc, while I do agree he was held back in Heroes ownward from his development in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, but it was exactly that which made me not be so rough on Tails acting all afraid like he does in Unleashed, Lost World, and Forces, and makes me love his moment of self reflection in Frontiers He just got out of 2 moments where he learned he could be independent, SA1 and SA2 (and I still somehow wonder how he passes through the same arc twice, but okay), then right in the next adventure, he goes back into just hanging out with Sonic instead of going and developing more his independency, yes, he can still show he's capable of things while hanging out with Sonic, but he never does develop his independency like that, and then he doesn't evolve on that independency of him anymore, up until Unleashed onward where he acts like a little kid, afraid of everything (but he still has his moments) And in Frontiers, not only they actually talk about the times Tails did things on his own, in SA1, SA2 and surprisingly Lost World, and also aknowlodge Tails also sometimes holding back and still relying on Sonic since he didn't had time to evolve that independency he had just aquired, and then he thinks for a while and decides to go on his own after that, not being able to rely on Sonic for everything, so he could grow, since he's just a kid yet (for all these years, and probably still will be, but luckily a more brave and independent kid lol) And, I'm sorry, it's nothing against you, but it bothers me so much seeing people bringing up Tails beating Chaos 4 or Chaos 6 on his own when he NEVER did that, Chaos 4 was a cooperative fight with Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, and Tails... never fights Chaos 6.
14:48 - 14:58 could you imagine if Sega went overboard with this mentality and didn't cancel their 'Search for Sonic's new Sidekick' campaign? thank god we'll never know how bad it could've turned out
I think the reason why Colleen voice acting doesn't appeal to you the most it's because it's not that she can't portray tail's emotions it's just that the writing of the 2010s are not good and make the character seem one dimensional and flat so there isn't much work with there
Love seeing good content like this about my favorite fox! 💕 I feel like the biggest issue with the recent games' portrayal is the writing. Colleen's acting can't change the fact the writing for Tails was _awful_ in Forces, or that the more tense moments between him and Sonic in Lost World felt like it could've used a 2nd or 3rd draft written up. I'll admit it's hard for me to go back to games with actual kids voicing him because I feel like it's better to have someone who can consistently voice him for decades take the role, and it's a little easier on the ears, imo. I just wish they could give Colleen a chance to work with a script like Sonic Adventure, where we see that development. I'm not gonna lie, I'm kinda mad that we got a Knuckles show and not a show where Tails goes through his character arc from Adventure to prep for the new movie being more or less Adventure 2. And most importantly: to hell with whoever wrote the joke about him watching Sonic bathe. I feel like apart from that joke, he was perfect in that movie.
Yeah. Amy Palant was mentioned briefly, but never gets a full section dedicated to her. Nor do the Japanese voice actors, the one from Adventure 1 and 2 (can't remember the name, but it was another young boy) and then from Heroes to present being Ryo Hirohashi.
You're kidding right? Tails has had the most consistent voice our of any of the characters 💀 (Edit) and Colleen isn't a good Tails? She's probably the best, man.
Oh my bad. Got it. But yeah, it's unfortunate how inconsistent the other voices besides Eggman, Silver, and Blaze have been. I'd say Shadow has probably had the most consistency in the main cast, and that's still iffy
I think it's important to make a distinction between the voice actors and the voice direction. Colleen (who started in Boom; Lost World was not Colleen) had some pretty bad voce direction as well as pretty bad writing in something like Forces. I'm not gonna get into Boom. Voice direction and writing on anything from Sonic Colors to Sonic Forces was pretty bad. Aside from Mike Pollok, who had already been voicing Eggman for a while. Both the writors AND voice directors changed for Frontiers, and Colleen's (as well as everybody else's) performance was a lot better. I also think Colleen's performance in Sonic Movie 2 was pretty good, as well as the Twitter takeovers.
I'm also a little surprised that you didn't mention the times where Connor "sounded like. he was reading. off. A script." (I really can't convey this in text.) Edit: Especially in his first scene and when he's explaining what the ARK is.
This comparison feels very weird. Like there is a lot of focus on Tails character and his story.... But this is merely talking about his voice, right? I mean, sure it makes sense to point out how weird it is in Heroes is after the Adventure games and how the voice being younger then he was is really weird... But I feel we are judging things that are out if the control of the voice actors, We all know none of the voice actors can write how these characters act in story, lets say they are all reading whats on the script. The one difference between Adventure Tails and Modern Tails is that one is voiced by kids and the other is an adult. I think that does make Adventure Tails land not as great as others, but I cannot blame a child for trying their best and at least doing exactly what he has to for the character. I feel Colleen does very well for his voice and that she channels Tail's voice very well, but I do feel the issue is the direction and story at times (like the moment in Forces is more the fault of the script, many point out the problem of 'Sonic being tortured' or 'Sonic being dead' isn't delivered too well by most characters anyway) what I am trying to say is: Do consider that this may not just be the voice actor's fault! While I do think she can give a flawed performance, this is not a just reason to fault her. Hope what I said makes sense. Thank you, nice video, wish you luck on what you make in the future!
Obviously, the adult women do much better than the actual kids did. But to me, I still always prefer when Tails was voiced by an actual young boy. He just seemed cuter to me, and I don’t really care about the difference in performance quality.
I dunno if I would call Tails as the one whose voice was noticeable to change. I think Rouge might have it a bit worse - going from a light sassy voice to a deeper, more seductive, older sounding voice then back to a lighter tone but with a Southern accent.
After Heroes, Tails’ voice is somewhat like Shadow’s case Maybe not a consistent voice actor, but if nothing else, there’s at least a consistent SOUND for tails, across Amy Palant, Kate Higgins, and Colleen unlike a certain blue fuck.
Moral of the story, if you're making something animated, whether that be a video game or a movie, don't bother hiring child actors. Adult women will always be the better option.
Truthfully, I was expecting you to comprehensively go over all the various mainline Tails voices, so the skip to Colleen from William was a bit strange. Also, while I understand the sentiment of Colleen’s acting to a degree, I think she’s not the problem as much as it’s the voice direction, since it’s a problem a lot of the Sonic voice actors have. (It’s why Rouge’s voice acting sounds worse in Sonic Dream Team compared to the Tails’ Tube video she appeared in for example.) I also find it strange you don’t think Colleen’s acting matches up to the stakes in the Sonic Movies, but I’ve never had an issue with her voice, so maybe I’m not as nit picky. Not only that, but I feel like some of what you were looking for in Tails’ portrayal were present in the Sonic Boom show, which I’ve noticed you’ve watched in an earlier video. That show really had a lot of characters at their best due to the script and voice direction, which is why I think Colleen just has the issue of being given bad voice direction and difficult scripts to work with from the examples you gave, minus Sonic Lost World as people already pointed out. (This issue extends to other current Sonic voice actors as well, as I’ve said.) I really enjoyed the video for the insight into the earlier Tails voices, but I think the exclusion of Tails’ other mainline voice actors before Colleen made the ending feel more confusing as a result, almost as if something was missing. I hope I don’t give the impression the video was really bad or anything. I just think fully committing to diving into the history of Tails’ voice for the sake of getting the point across that his voice has been really inconsistent would’ve helped that much more.
Hey! Yeah so I should have clarified more, this video was focusing on Tails’ voice in the Adventure Era which is why I left out Amy Palant and Kate Higgins Respectively. As for the lack of mention for Boom I focused on how Colleen voiced tails in mainline series content, and I was comparing the current voice of tails to the ones from those older times. hope that clears some stuff up!
Ah, that makes a LOT more sense, lol. I’d say it’s definitely worth clarifying that in the future if you make another video like this for the sake of clarity. And I understand the Tails thing with Sonic Boom not being mainline, though my main issue was the point you were making about Colleen that “…There’s still a lot of work that I really do think needs to be done” with Tails’ voice, even though we’ve seen she’s fully capable in Sonic media like the Sonic Boom TV series when voicing Tails to be varied in his emotions, but the mainline games suffer problems the Adventure Era didn’t. If it was focusing purely on Tails’ voice, and the voice actors’ performances weren’t attached to the analysis, I’d definitely agree. But because you were taking the actors’ abilities into account, it felt a bit misconstrued when accounting for the fact it’s not the actors’ fault as much as it’s the people behind the Sonic games lately. (Which is why Frontiers saw a noticeable improvement. Everyone across the board saw an improvement because the voice direction in general was raised to a higher standard, and not just Colleen’s acting for Tails.) But that’s just my two cents on the whole thing, lol. It just kinda stuck out to me as strange, which is why I felt like bringing it up, but it’s really not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things.
@@jadonh The thing is you can’t always use the “voice direction” to blame. Sometimes actors are not fit for certain roles, simple as that. @Izywik92 I can understand that. If it’s just the voice itself that’s the problem, then it’s probably more up to personal preference which I completely understand. I prefer Colleen over the Adventure Era Tails voices, but that’s not because I don’t like their voices. I like them for different reasons, and think they fit for those games more. But obviously everyone has their own preference for what Tails voice fits the character best, and none are inherently more valid than another. I am curious who Tails would’ve been replaced with, though, when almost all of the Sonic cast was about to be replaced a while back. Specifically with Conner and Colleen's portrayals, you bring up that Conner's Tails was basically the evolution of Corey's in terms of his characterization but didn't bring up that he still has some awkward line deliveries. Colleen should’ve just been Tails in boom, her voicing mainline Tails was a mistake
@@Izywik90 Why Is It Mistake?
@@BerryTheFox The thing with Colleen is she originally only voiced Charmy since he was a funny character and then was brought on to play as Boom Tails since the Boom games and show were going for a sitcom comedy type of thing so her comedic voice fit perfectly for that, however Sega decided to have her be the main English VA for Tails going forward which doesn’t fit mainline Tails since like I said her voice is more for comedy dialogue.
@@Izywik90 Well I Get That Because SEGA Is Keeping Current Cast For Now Since They Ain't Gonna Reboot Sonic Franchise Again With New Voice Actors For The Characters Any Time Soon.
@@Izywik90And Also What About Her Voice As Tails In Sonic Movies And Knuckles Series?
@@BerryTheFox Those are generic Hollywood kids movies with Sonic characters in it so I really don’t care how she sounds there, I’m talking about mainline Tails
Not to be THAT guy, but you completely glossed over Amy Palant. She was Tails in Sonic X and the “Dark Age”. What is your opinions on her take on Tails?
@@Super-Sonic-Mikey I feel I should have made this more explicit but this was focusing on the ADVENTURE Era
I only mention Colleen because she is the current voice of tails and was comparing it to the older voices.
As for Amy palant, she’s one of my favorite voices for tails and she did an amazing job
@@Vmeg17ah I see, no problem.
Just 9 likes?...Let me fix that!
Blame the voice direction 🗿
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
WOOOOOO
Get my ass to voice sonic and shadow 😂
Solution: Play the games in Japanese.
They should get Tom Holland to voice tails 🗣️🗣️🗣️
YES DUDE.
no,
I do not want to live in a world were spider man and tails are connected in a way.
@@artissaziz1139Hom Tolland not Tom Holland
