2:53 ok , how many times are we gonna do this "ancient history/origin of the chaos emeralds" type plot ? We've been doing this since sonic 3&K ! We had the master emeralds temple in 3&K , then the ancient knuckles clan in adventure , then the gaia temples in unleashed , then the ancients in frontiers and now hieroglyphics in superstars. This is so redundant and inconsistent. It doesn't even make any sense why the emeralds have had all these powers that have literally never been utilised ever again outside of superstars in the timeline. They're becoming a dues ex machina that can be anything the plot needs it to be and its always different every game.
That's really only 5 times and the emeralds have been around since the very beginning of sonic so its been like over 30 years. While yeah doing it back to back in from frontiers to superstar Is a bit much we still don't know much about the full origin of the chaos emerald so new info about an element we've been acquainted with since the beginning isn't a bad thing

S&k gave us the master emerald and a snippets of the echidnas. Adventure 1 gave us the chaos as well as the end of the echidnas. Gaia temples shows where the emeralds have been after leaving Angel Island heck frontiers tells us the origins of the chao and how the emeralds got here in the first place and their still more stuff that hasn't been answered. The only game i cant defend is superstar as it offers nothing to the lore of the emeralds nor does it answer or unravels mysteries regarding aspect of the lore. I'm just saying we are without a doubt getting another game revolving around the emeralds origins some point in the future and if they do a good job and answer previously asked question about chaos emerald lore that is useful to know than their shouldn't be an issue

As a long time Sonic fan I've been wondering if I should try to get that game or not, so good that I now know that it could be a bit of a waste of money for me, and that I should just wait until the next fully 3D Sonic game that gets made like Sonic Frontiers was, gets revealed. I've always liked fully 3D ones more than side scrolling ones, because in the fully 3D ones you can more easily see where you are going and have a better chance to know if you are accidentally falling towards a bottomless pit because of that. When you mentioned Jun Senoue, that immediately got me thinking about his involvement in the Adventure games and especially about how impressed I am on how much of an awsome job he did with composing the rock and roll music for the iconic " Live and learn" theme song of SA2. Lately I've been considering that it's one of the best songs that I've ever listend to!!! I just LOVE listening to recordings of it.

Bad things mostly happen with a Sonic game gets released on the holidays when Sega had to have known Sonic Team and Arzest weren't entirely finished Sonic Superstars. The game is far from terrible, but that is because Sega got in the way of development with their seemingly impossible goal of released Sonic to be competed with Mario and other games. Sega or specifically the guys running the company at current are the reason Sonic is still suffering this nonsense.

I agree that the game could have turned out a bit better and that 60 is overpriced considering it's literally a budget game like Sonic 4 (kinda feels like episide 3 at points). Honestly though I can't say I'm too surprised by how it turned out with it being something that came from a drunk Zoom call with the Yoshi's New Island devs. I will say though, this game kinda feels like a lost 3DS game and definitely could have faired better on there if it actually released back in the day. Better late than never I guess.
@jaydenc367 Actually, it came to be cause of a drunk zoom call with Ohshima-san (aka the creator of both Sonic and Eggman) sho also conveniently owns a studio Arzest who's made mostly budget crap. Though, the main reason why I consider it Episide 3 at points is cause it was in the works up until it was shelved in 2015. I kinda like to think they took stuff from it and put it into the game in some way.

They didn't help Sonic Team finish, they pretty much made the entire game with some assistance from Sonic Team. Also, Oshihma said Arzest was going to turn the page on Balan Wonderworld so that probably means they don't want to take inspiration from it (which is good, that one was a shitshow)
You can dot he origins hammer attack run thingy if you jump and hold A the game just kinda doesn't explain it well, you can also find fruits on the levels lol
The fruit and character levels are optional and don't need the roulette to access. Also Amy's hammer is a more controlled version of the origins plus move

Brother this game is atleast a 7 out 10, a lot of your complaints felt nitpicky with the only one I honestly agree with being the boss fights. It has good mechanics and fun levels. Like most platformers it dosnt need a crazy in depth story.
Bro I’m a massive sonic, been keeping up with the franchise for more than 20 years, and superstars is right down awful, I tried, after the first campaign I tried the post game, collected the emeralds and after reaching press factory as Trip I had to quit, I wish I could get my money back, the game is overpriced, it has little quality, from poor enemy design, bland level backgrounds, most levels have nothing going on in the back, the soundtrack is garbage, omg the bosses hurt my soul and lastly the coins and the multiplayer are worthless, this game is garbage!

The game to me was just "meh" especially for the $60 asking price (I wish I had waited for a sale). It felt essentially like Sonic 4 Episode III and just lacked polish with way too many gimmicks that got in the way of the enjoyment. It just felt like a huge step down from Sonic Mania. It also had performance issues on Switch, a weak overall soundtrack and some tedious boss fights. I don't get why Sonic Team and Sega didn't just allow Christian Whitehead and his team make a direct follow-up to Mania. Arzest is known for making pretty mediocre games, so it isn't surprising that this game doesn't hold a candle to Mania.

You failed to provide any actual examples as to why "Sonic 4 music" is bad. You just assumed that everyone already agrees with you, which is a blatant false-consensus bias. I, for example, absolutely love Sonic 4's soundtrack, especially Episode II's. I can list several examples of tracks that I consider phenominal. Lost Labyrinth Zone (Acts 1-3) Mad Gear Zone Acts 1 and 2 Sylvania Castly Zone (Acts 1-3) White Park Zone (Acts 1-3) Sky Fortress Zone Acts 2 and 3 and *especially* Death Egg Zone Mk.II I consider most of these tracks on-par if not superior to that classics. Also, saying "Jun Senoue should stay away from classic Sonic" is willingly ignorant towards his irreplaceable contributions to both Sonic 3 and Sonic 3D Blast. You're given a motive from Eggman, with a new character or two, and sonic and friends are trying to stop him from getting too powerful. It's been that way from the beginning, with Eggman stealing the flickies, to him making the Death Egg, and eventually building his own amusement park. None of it is explained, and we as the player are just expected to accept that Eggman is cartoonishly evil and we need to stop him. As far as the dragon is concerned, we know that it's extremely powerful and had ties to Trip, which explains why Eggman is looking for it and why he's also working with Trip
@bassboi02 I disagree. In Sonic 1, 2, and CD, it was as simple as Eggman wanting to take over the world with machines and robots. Sonic 3K added a bit more depth by introducing knuckles. It was made clear in hidden palace that Eggman tricked him. We dont get anything like that for Trip. Superstars is also the first classic game to have a an antagonistic force besides Eggman or his lackeys. The dragon is in the same vein as Chaos from Sonic Adventure, yet the don't explain it's origins.

This game sucked, I actually exchanged it for Mario Wonder. It’s really too bad, I can seem some promise here, but it was just so shoddy overall. The music was a mixed bag of shit, like didn’t they learn after Sonic 4’s music, wtf?? The backgrounds were so lame compared to the Classics. The levels seemed thrown together. The Emerald abilities seemed to only work in very limited situations. The Emerald zones were uninspired. The level idea were better than usual, but still very same-y. I mean, look at Mario Wonder, don’t tell me Sonic is being creative. I could go on… it was shitty, but I had hope it would be better :(
Game getting too much hate overall. It's a 7/10 2D Sonic game it's fine. It's a game that is perfectly likeable (replays might help as always, especially Act replays without the bosses) while not a game to love. A followup has potential for more.

Time Eater is something you can consistently beat if you were to do it 3 times in a row. This Super Sonic boss fight has RNG from the rings spawning in at random intervals. They’re both trash, just that one of them suffers a massive nuke to the face while the other suffers death by a thousand paper cuts.
What’s wrong with ‘another’ classic sonic game when Mario also has many games in a ‘classic’ style? I personally enjoy 2d games and so do my kids (aged 10 and 16 so not little kids). The new Mario game is ‘classic’ 2d and there has just been a 3D sonic game out too (frontiers) so I don’t get your point there.
It's worth noting that there's a difference between a "Classic" 2d game and just a regular 2d game. Sonic has specifically been using the "classic" 2d style which some people are getting tired of.
Agreed. Mario always gets a pass. When it comes to Sonic everybody just picks the bones until there's nothing left. I feel like it's at that point where they could make the perfect sonic game and it won't break the 8/10 barrier. Face it, the world will never allow a sonic game to be better than a Mario game. This game is the most miserable classic sonic experience since forces. I despise what this became and how insufferable the Sonic 4 ear cancer is along with the time wasting bosses how stupid the multiple multi phase bosses are and the zero fun and zero desire for replay value aside from trips slog of a campaign. This game every time I play it I’m left frustrated angry and feeling like my time is not valued in the slightest.
5:12 Her normal Hammer Attack (as seen in SADX and the Advance games) doesn't look too different from her Superstars jump attack. Though, in those games she only did it once and uncurled herself, leaving her open to attacks. So I much prefer Superstars' approach. In Advance 2 she also had a Jump Ball and Spin with a little bit of Hammer peaking out. But that was so miniscule, she might've as well not have it at all...

Trip is sadly just Knuckles 2, I wish her lore was explained more because her super form is cool but buggy and dark dragon is.....there because they went the route of adventure storytelling in a classic Sonic game but didn't even follow through with it. That's all interesting but her gameplay is just Amy with a hint of Knuckles, the only difference being that she can climb on top of walls but this is really finicky as well because it doesn't work like the pink wisp, you just actively have to climb on top of a wall or else you'll just fall off of it if you're trying to climb from the bottom of a wall to the side. Somewhat off topic but people complained that Sonic Colors just took abilities at Sonic normally had and gave them to wisp forms, I personally would have been fine if Trip's gameplay actually played like the Pink Wisp but they somehow messed that up as well. Either way Amy's gameplay is a complete mess and has been since Origins, she's just several elements of Sonic's gameplay stitched together and some are slightly altered but it is so hard to tell if she has an insta shield in this game so who knows.

This is what upsets me about Sega, always rushing games out, always cutting things to try to justify their competition with other games at release, and they... whoever is running the show seems to learn nothing of their lesson with the Sonic series or any franchises in general. They cut out the lore, they screwed with Arzest's redemption time, any thing any developer does, Sega stamps it down and keeps them from even being developers. The game has promising things, but Sega held back it's potential once again.....

@jaydenc367 Actually, it came to be cause of a drunk zoom call with Ohshima-san (aka the creator of both Sonic and Eggman) sho also conveniently owns a studio Arzest who's made mostly budget crap. Though, the main reason why I consider it Episide 3 at points is cause it was in the works up until it was shelved in 2015. I kinda like to think they took stuff from it and put it into the game in some way.

They didn't help Sonic Team finish, they pretty much made the entire game with some assistance from Sonic Team. Also, Oshihma said Arzest was going to turn the page on Balan Wonderworld so that probably means they don't want to take inspiration from it (which is good, that one was a shitshow)

The fruit and character levels are optional and don't need the roulette to access. Also Amy's hammer is a more controlled version of the origins plus move

Brother this game is atleast a 7 out 10, a lot of your complaints felt nitpicky with the only one I honestly agree with being the boss fights. It has good mechanics and fun levels. Like most platformers it dosnt need a crazy in depth story.

Bro I’m a massive sonic, been keeping up with the franchise for more than 20 years, and superstars is right down awful, I tried, after the first campaign I tried the post game, collected the emeralds and after reaching press factory as Trip I had to quit, I wish I could get my money back, the game is overpriced, it has little quality, from poor enemy design, bland level backgrounds, most levels have nothing going on in the back, the soundtrack is garbage, omg the bosses hurt my soul and lastly the coins and the multiplayer are worthless, this game is garbage!

The game to me was just "meh" especially for the $60 asking price (I wish I had waited for a sale). It felt essentially like Sonic 4 Episode III and just lacked polish with way too many gimmicks that got in the way of the enjoyment. It just felt like a huge step down from Sonic Mania. It also had performance issues on Switch, a weak overall soundtrack and some tedious boss fights. I don't get why Sonic Team and Sega didn't just allow Christian Whitehead and his team make a direct follow-up to Mania. Arzest is known for making pretty mediocre games, so it isn't surprising that this game doesn't hold a candle to Mania.

In order for your statement to actually mean anything, you'd have to prove that the music of Sonic 4 (both episodes) is inherently bad and holds zero artistic merit. Spoiler: you didn't. You failed to provide any actual examples as to why "Sonic 4 music" is bad. You just assumed that everyone already agrees with you, which is a blatant false-consensus bias.
I, for example, absolutely love Sonic 4's soundtrack, especially Episode II's. I can list several examples of tracks that I consider phenominal.
Lost Labyrinth Zone (Acts 1-3)
Mad Gear Zone Acts 1 and 2
Sylvania Castly Zone (Acts 1-3)
White Park Zone (Acts 1-3)
Sky Fortress Zone Acts 2 and 3
and *especially* Death Egg Zone Mk.II
I consider most of these tracks on-par if not superior to that classics. I can easily provide these examples, yet I've yet to see a single person actually explain why Sonic 4's music is bad as a whole.
Also, saying "Jun Senoue should stay away from classic Sonic" is willingly ignorant towards his irreplaceable contributions to both Sonic 3 and Sonic 3D Blast.
Lastly, you said "Unfortunately, Jun Senoue served as director for the music".
Not liking some music is one thing. It's another to be upset that a man has a job just because you don't personally like his music. There are plenty of Sonic composers that I don't consider myself fans of. However, I still realize that they deserve their positions, and deserve basic respect.

The story isn't explained very well. Where does the dragon at the end come from? Why is Trip working with Eggman?
@Aktedya1-jt7vw it's a mystery on purpose. It's a classic sonic game. You're given a motive from Eggman, with a new character or two, and sonic and friends are trying to stop him from getting too powerful. It's been that way from the beginning, with Eggman stealing the flickies, to him making the Death Egg, and eventually building his own amusement park. None of it is explained, and we as the player are just expected to accept that Eggman is cartoonishly evil and we need to stop him. As far as the dragon is concerned, we know that it's extremely powerful and had ties to Trip, which explains why Eggman is looking for it and why he's also working with Trip
@bassboi02 I disagree. In Sonic 1, 2, and CD, it was as simple as Eggman wanting to take over the world with machines and robots.
Sonic 3K added a bit more depth by introducing knuckles. It was made clear in hidden palace that Eggman tricked him. We dont get anything like that for Trip.
Superstars is also the first classic game to have a an antagonistic force besides Eggman or his lackeys. The dragon is in the same vein as Chaos from Sonic Adventure, yet the don't explain it's origins.

This game sucked, I actually exchanged it for Mario Wonder. It’s really too bad, I can seem some promise here, but it was just so shoddy overall. The music was a mixed bag of shit, like didn’t they learn after Sonic 4’s music, wtf?? The backgrounds were so lame compared to the Classics. The levels seemed thrown together. The Emerald abilities seemed to only work in very limited situations. The Emerald zones were uninspired. The level idea were better than usual, but still very same-y. I mean, look at Mario Wonder, don’t tell me Sonic is being creative. I could go on… it was shitty, but I had hope it would be better :(
Game getting too much hate overall. It's a 7/10 2D Sonic game it's fine. It's a game that is perfectly likeable (replays might help as always, especially Act replays without the bosses) while not a game to love. A followup has potential for more.
For myself personally my final score is 6/10. Not the worst thing ever but I wouldn’t wanna revisit the game again so soon.

The game imo is great, my only gripe about it is why Jun keeps using that damn horrible genesis synth, it just doesnt sound good at all and i think the OST should have just been handled by Tee Lopes and the rest of the frontiers music crew who did a stellar job with the soundtrack
Edit: forgot to add that, Jun should stay as a composer for a few of the tracks he made but yk, kinda like BIZ act 1 it shouldve been arranged by Tee and the rest of the crew, with Jun only serving as main composer

Time Eater is something you can consistently beat if you were to do it 3 times in a row. This Super Sonic boss fight has RNG from the rings spawning in at random intervals.

What’s wrong with ‘another’ classic sonic game when Mario also has many games in a ‘classic’ style? I personally enjoy 2d games and so do my kids (aged 10 and 16 so not little kids). The new Mario game is ‘classic’ 2d and there has just been a 3D sonic game out too (frontiers) so I don’t get your point there.
It's worth noting that there's a difference between a "Classic" 2d game and just a regular 2d game. Sonic has specifically been using the "classic" 2d style which some people are getting tired of.
Agreed. Mario always gets a pass. When it comes to Sonic everybody just picks the bones until there's nothing left. I feel like it's at that point where they could make the perfect sonic game and it won't break the 8/10 barrier. Face it, the world will never allow a sonic game to be better than a Mario game. I enjoyed superstars but I guess everyone wants to go back to the sonic 06/shadow the hedgehog days where they weren't even trying.. because what we are getting now isn't good enough apparently.. This game is the most miserable classic sonic experience since forces. I despise what this became and how insufferable the Sonic 4 ear cancer is along with the time wasting bosses how stupid the multiple multi phase bosses are and the zero fun and zero desire for replay value aside from trips slog of a campaign. This game every time I play it I’m left frustrated angry and feeling like my time is not valued in the slightest.
5:12 Her normal Hammer Attack (as seen in SADX and the Advance games) doesn't look too different from her Superstars jump attack. Though, in those games she only did it once and uncurled herself, leaving her open to attacks. So I much prefer Superstars' approach.
In Advance 2 she also had a Jump Ball and Spin with a little bit of Hammer peaking out. But that was so miniscule, she might've as well not have it at all...

Trip is sadly just Knuckles 2, I wish her lore was explained more because her super form is cool but buggy and dark dragon is.....there because they went the route of adventure storytelling in a classic Sonic game but didn't even follow through with it.
That's all interesting but her gameplay is just Amy with a hint of Knuckles, the only difference being that she can climb on top of walls but this is really finicky as well because it doesn't work like the pink wisp, you just actively have to climb on top of a wall or else you'll just fall off of it if you're trying to climb from the bottom of a wall to the side.
Somewhat off topic but people complained that Sonic Colors just took abilities at Sonic normally had and gave them to wisp forms, I personally would have been fine if Trip's gameplay actually played like the Pink Wisp but they somehow messed that up as well. Either way Amy's gameplay is a complete mess and has been since Origins, she's just several elements of Sonic's gameplay stitched together and some are slightly altered but it is so hard to tell if she has an insta shield in this game so who knows.

This is what upsets me about Sega, always rushing games out, always cutting things to try to justify their competition with other games at release, and they... whoever is running the show seems to learn nothing of their lesson with the Sonic series or any franchises in general. They cut out the lore, they screwed with Arzest's redemption time, any thing any developer does, Sega stamps it down and keeps them from even being developers. The game has promising things, but Sega held back it's potential once again.....
