Yes if you do this wrong, you get bad results. Usually people only do this on longer hair and you have to comb/brush all of the hair up to make sure it’s even once you cut it; you’re not supposed to tie your hair into a big floppy mushroom. You’re also supposed to dampen the hair so it is as straight as possible.
I have stopped going to hairdressers because I always get someone like him and have NEVER came out of a salon with what I asked for, layers. I just thought that they were taught differently from when I was younger and just didn’t know or didn’t understand. Cut my own hair now, have done for years and saved a fortune.
I do this but at the forehead, unicorn and I love my Cut. Happiest I've been with my hair every time. EVERY other salon cut I was unhappy. I'm forever doing my own!!!
How is the unicorn cut different? I may want to try it that way even though I love the result I get by following what the Salon Guy did in this video except I do not have to slide cut after for some reason, the layers naturally just blend. I do have to use thinning shears on back of my hair because it's so thick.
@@annabanana377 unicorn means the ponytail is all the way to the front, right by your forehead. It makes the front layers the shortest, instead of the top of the head.
Ponytail at forehead, not in the middle of the top of ur head.... Works wonderful, been doing it for years and I love it more than any stylist ever did !
its optional. Seems to work further back where before the head starts to go downward. And if you go all the way back i guess you get a bob. Or all at once i guess?
Almost every stylist I've been to screwed my hair up in one way or another. And it wasn't even a matter of taste, just basic things like poor technique, lack of knowledge or understanding of design principles. Been to one recently, my dad recommended her. She was in a hurry for some reason and made a careless movement with a clipper, shaving off a pretty big chunk of long hair from my undercut, right on the forehead where it's most visible. Screwing up a hairline I carefully shaved myself and put a lot of effort to make it perfect. I was so frustrated. Every time I put trust in people they break it. Now I have to grow it out for ages and it looks ridiculous. I've already moved several countries and still can't find myself a good stylist. I don't understand why this keeps happening. At least I have no idea how in the world I manage to get it right even without any education or experience, and they can't. If this repeats once more, I might as well come to believe that luck exists, god forbid. I'm not doing it again, I better keep those money, free time and nerves.
@@vlst8715 same shit happens to me, i had to bring friends to cut my hair because at least they pour their heart into it, and it really showed. it was better than any other haircut that i've gotten up until that point, and i haven't cutten my hair since.
@@hypoc09Yo, I've just cut my hair myself for the first time. 💪 Did this ponytail thing with some adjustments, then thinned the heck out of it with a safety razor. Thought it would look terrible but no, it's just what I wanted! I only have to ask my SO to shave my head in the back. Still waiting for that chopped off hairline to grow out. 😤 Screw the hairdressers! Not The Salon Guy though, thanks god this channel exists.
I tried this last year (but it was less messy, i combed it) and it worked so amazingly well. This year I wanted the same haircut and went to a hairdresser and they completely f***ed up. They thinned it out way too much, i have no volume and one layer that looks like a bowl cut. I'm devastated. Never gonna let a hairdresser touch my hair.
Late to this comment, but the bowl cut ALWAYS happens to me. My hair is thick on the sides and that top layer always looks like a separate haircut. I always end up blending it myself at home so I just decided to start cutting myself and taking an hour or so to even it all out to the best of my ability. Only works because I have wavy hair, though.
I did this in the 70s. You can vary where you put the pony tail. On top like this or further towards the forehead and front of face. Definitely adds lots of layers.
Question. If I were to do it on the back of my head (a low ponytail) would it give the back of my head a short cut? I want to cut my hair short but unsure of how to do it at the back so I thought you may be able to help me with that.
I had hair down to my waist and used this method to cut it. I went as short as I possibly could, and it looked amazing. I was extremely pleased!! My hair has a natural wavy/curl to it, and every day was a good hair day! Loved it. No regrets here!!
i was actually curious what would happen if i tried this because i've been wanting to do this for a while but didn't find any tutorials. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR.
I do the ponytail method and it works perfectly You cut too much off the ponytail and you never brush the hair evenly flat and then tie the hair tie.........use a 2nd hair tie. I have saved so much money over past 8 years not going to hairdresser not to mention saved myself alot of tears because hairdressers usually do the opposite of what you ask for. Never leaving satisfied.
It actually works. I did it many times and absolutely love the 80s my era. It supposed to be tighter and neater ponytail use a comb and bring it forward a bit more and not cut it so close to the rubber band although tried that too and it turned awesome as Van Halen Lol
If you want it shorter in the front instead of back, the ponytail should be in the front like a unicorn. If you want short in the front and back, have 2 ponytails, one in front and one at the top of your head. This does work and this guy did a tutorial on it a year after this one but Brad Mondo's are better. He shows both ways- you can look for "butterfly cut tutorial" and "wolf cut tutorial". Once you get a feel for how the lengths will distribute, you can modify it really easily to get the results you want. Doing it with damp hair is easiest and of course brush it well and make the ponytail as clean and tight as you can. You get all these random long bits if you are sloppy like he was in this video 😅 he didn't want this to work
I love messy hair, my hair has a mind of its own anyway, no matter what stylist I’ve been too, my hair has other ideas, so instead of fighting it, I now just go with it, i learnt to love my hair. I have just cut five inches off and with it’s natural wave etc, it looks fine, friends have asked where I went to have it done.
You have to comb the hair really well and have it tight in the ponytail, smoothed out. Half of it was so loose and falling out , more on one side, so of course it comes out uneven or "hideous" , in his words. Works better if wet too. If you use better technique you don't have to do much additional cutting and clean up, just some blending/thinning out of the edges.
I’ve been doing this shag look for years as I have such thick hair so I love volume on top of my head. At the moment I’m growing out my grey so my hair is so long and heavy and thick so living in ponytails. I’m trying to decide wether I should go and get a hair dresser to blend my colour in at the moment. As getting impatient or maybe bite the bullet and cut it really short and let it grow longer naturally again. Good video. You can’t beat a easy shag look so easy to look after. Short layers through long hair is awesome 😎

First what I do is pull my hair into 2 side ponytails and cut at 90 degrees at the sides, comb it all out, then section at front and back of ear line, make 2 unicorn horns at front and back and cut at that horn angle then check for any stray hairs and cut those. Works great.
What if I do the ponytail hair cut not on the top but in the back. Would that be okay? The reason why I want to cut my hair is because it’s getting too long. My concern is will the layering look messed up in the back?
I see his point. In reality though, you would tighten hair to scalp comb until its evenly flat all around and DO NOT cut that close to rubber band. Etc. Then there is the pull all hair forward cut....

Did this the only reason why it looks different for me is cause i had a taper with my long hair. It looks alright
😍 love it thanks 🙏
I think I've accidentally slipped into the dimension where people know 😢combs exist but refuse to use them.
Reminds me of Steve Hackett( Genesis) Or Eddie Van Halen hair!
Hey man, could you please make a bread pitt 90s hairstyle video? For curtains or a middle part. more for a medium size hair.
Apreciate your content, love from Brazil.
I wouldn't let this guy cut my dog's hair
First of all your hair isnt evenly brushed together so kind of difficult to see the cut evenly,
"Let's see what we got" cuts some more. "OK let's see what we got"
Yea it works ive been doing it since i was a kid. Its the only haircut ive ever gotten lol
Great I love it👍it Would be so cool to make the famous George Michael haircut in the (everything she wants)vidéo clip it is so 80's and iconic ✌️😉
My hair is too short to do this :(
Not exactly the way you're supposed to do it. Must be pulled tight and then trim off the ends, not that close to the hair tie.
That's so sweet
Eddie called, he wants his hair back
LOL
I did this and it gave me a wolf cut lmao, looks decent but Im gonna get it fixed
the mannequin is hot
The first one looks bad? That's how I like my hair
Reminds me of some of Victor Tsoi's haircuts
I love the pony tail👍
I just think its funny that a bald man who has longer hair on his face than on his head is telling us how to cut long hair on the head........
You did the unicorn cut wrong
Well if you do it wrong like you do thn of course it's gonna look ugly O_O
Fantastic I like it
I'm a broke and I have long curly hair. I'm starting to look like a girl, and I think I need to start looking like a guy who can't afford a haircut. 🐴
🤔 I'll probably straighten my hair first so I can get a cleaner cut.
😂 I hope this works because I could save a lot of money
🤣🤣
Thank you sir

Lol, it works if you do it right
Isnt this similar to the one emo cut tutorial you did ? Where you bring all the hair up to a ponytail and chop ?
Yessssssss
