Elise (Veerle Baetens) besitzt ihren eigenen Tattoo-Shop und Didier (Johan Heldenbergh) spielt Banjo in einer Band. Obwohl die beiden so verschieden sind, verlieben sie sich auf den ersten Blick ineinander. Er redet viel, sie hört gern zu. Er ist ein sturer Atheist und ist trotzdem hoffnungslos und naiv romantisch. Sie hat sich ein Kreuz in den Nacken tätowieren lassen und ist eine Realistin, die mit beiden Beinen im Leben steht. Das Glück der beiden scheint perfekt, als ihre kleine Tochter Maybelle (Nell Cattrysse) geboren wird. Mit sechs Jahren wird die Kleine aber ernsthaft krank. Didier und Elise sind sich uneinig darüber, wie Maybelle behandelt werden soll. Für die gemeinsame Tochter müssen sie ihre Verschiedenheit überwinden und zusammen um ihr Leben kämpfen. Elise und Didiers Leben wird zu einer Achterbahnfahrt.

Maybe I live in a hole..but I just hear this song for the first time and I was blown away. Cleaning house and I was in doing laundry, I had the TV up loudly on the country videos station and I heard these beautiful voices-I had to come in, then I had to sit down and watch. Just beautiful and what WONDERFUL tats!!!

I cannot listen to this song without bursting into uncontrollable tears but I listen to it all the time nonetheless. People ask me why I torture myself this way and to them I must quote Jessica Kiang's review of the film. "Sorrow truthfully communicated and shared can be cathartic, rather than depressing." I can feel and see in Verlee Baetens heartrendingly poignant performance the pain of her character's loss.
