My husband passed away yesterday morning after a short battle with Lewy Body dementia. He was only 67 years Young. He loved Townes Van Zandt. I thought I knew a lot about music and musicians, being in the music business myself. My husband introduced me to so many wonderful singer-songwriters, some of whom were obscure. He introduced me to Townes. This song was one of his favorites, and became one of ours. I played it over and over to him in hospice. Before hospice, when he was first admitted to the hospital, he could mouth the lyrics. Every single word. Rest easy now, my love. If I needed you, you would come to me. 💔🙏😪
I know it’s not the same thing, but I used to play the song for my dog JJ when he was dying to calm him down. There’s something about the song that has a very soothing effect and just makes you OK with everything. I’m crying right now talking into my phone. It’s been over a year I still miss that dog so much. Maybe you could tell your husband to take care of him for me.
He struggled with heroin addiction, he sadly lost his battle. My bestfriend used to sing his songs to me, I didn't know at the time how hard she was trying to tell me about how her addiction felt. I lost her 1 year ago yesterday.
Just listened to a Townes interview from 1993 where he said that he wrote this song in his sleep. He was staying at guy Clark’s house and they all had the flu so they were drinking a lot of Codeine cough syrup. He said he had the most vivid dreams and woke up one night after dreaming the song. He wrote down the lyrics and already knew the chords without grabbing his guitar. The next morning he played it for guy and never changed the song.
@@resistthesystem6145 ahh yes, i am familiar with the scene.😉 Throw a little Benjamin Tod in there too. Hungry For You Blues... Busted Love or Using Again Peace and love🤗😘

I am an 88' model. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Mr. Townes Van Zandt's music at a fairly early age. I have a hard time with thinking anyone musician/person is better or the best, but I will show my love for the man! TOWNES VAN ZANDT IS THE GREATEST SONGWRITER THAT EVER LIVED!! LONG LIVE HIS MUSIC AND BY GOD, LONG LIVE HIS LEGACY!
Five song writers can break my heart in a single line. They are, in no particular order, Warren Zevon, Tom Waits, Harry Chapin, Randy Newman, and , of course Townes Van Zandt. They all write from experienced pain, that is common to all of us.
+bensdadfrank Mine are Joni Mitchell, Laura Marling, and Conor Oberst, But a Harry Chapin line has really stuck with me the last few days "I am the midnight watchman, at Miller's Tool and Die, and I watch the metal rusting, and I watch the time go by." to me this speaks volumes on the average man's life. I just hopped on the Townes ferry, am I in for quite the tour?
My beloved father died almost a year ago. One of the funeral directors was asking us about suggestions for a looped song list for the memorial service and I mentioned Townes and he really liked that. Said something like an unrecognized hero of American music. I just said, well I like him and dad would have liked him. So we had For the Sake of the Song in there. It was nice.
I heard this on Crazy Heart last night. I'm going to learn it and play it for my wife when she gets back to Australia from Ireland, after this pandemic lockdown. Beautiful song.
I was so fortunate to grow up in Austin and Houston & Ft. Worth. Saw Townes like a regular day would go, Lightnin Hopkins, and so many great artists. Thanks Townes, you have always been a huge part of my life & stay in my heart. Another gone too soon at least for me. We don't have a say, I believe Townes accepted it all and was "ready"...So many thanks..
I went to Illinois State University in the late 70s and early 80s and got to see Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Albert King, and John Lee Hooker play on campus for $3. Can you imagine? Steve Goodman and Jethro Burns for $5. When Steve sang My Old Man it was heartbreaking. Giants. I have seen giants for $3
"Well in the night forlorn, and the mornings born, and the morning shines with the lights of love. You will miss sunrise, If you close your eyes, and that would break my heart in two."
Flower that is so sad because accidentally I found this marvelous singer and I was wonder in what time was playing his songs, however his style playing reminds me to Mark Knopfler
Heartbreaking....simply heartbreaking. One of the sweetest songs I've ever heard. Townes was truly a songwriter from the "heart". Thanks for posting this amazing performance.
I am a die-hard Marty Robbins fan. I never thought anyone could play music that touched my soul like Marty's music. But Townes's music is having the same effect on me. I am late in the game with Townes but I am a definite fan. Townes and John Denver are so underrated. This great Townes song reminds me of an early Marty Robbins classic "Tomorrow You'll Be Gone" about how a relationship has gone awry. Damn, Townes and Marty were such geniuses.
Not that it matters but hello to all the Townes lovers from India. I discovered him a few months back and man I love some of his songs so much. If I needed you is so good. No words.
I was at the recent Guy Clark tribute show in November. JT Van Zandt walked out onto the stage, looking very much like this ... it was stunning. I'd give anything for the video of this entire show. Thanks for posting.
one of the greatest Townes songs and there are so many to choose from but I think this one goes down in my top five, easily. Lupe and Lil' were parakeets!
It is weird about how Townes Van Zandt's and John Denver's lives were so similar. They were born about the same age and tragically died about the same age. Both suffered marital and substance problems. Both were probably bi-polar. Both were incredible songwriters and singers. Both were very good acoustic guitarists. Both were natural leaders that other musicians wanted to emulate. Both played music that wasn't quite folk but wasn't quite country. Both were very sensitive. Both were born into prominent families, who had high expectations of them. Both had very high IQs. Both were attached to nature. Townes actually had more in common with John Denver than Guy Clark. One could say that Townes and John were/are spiritual soulmates. Also, they were both athletic.
This song makes me break down but I still listen to it once a week just to cry it out, like some dramatic teenager lol. I love you Andy. Always. And I mean everything in this song..to you. Always. Just come up. I'll take care of you. Muah. ❤❤❤❤
I used to be in 'awe' over this song. But it was ruined for me, but some careless, evil man..who toyed with my heart so much...that I don't even remember the good anymore...well barely. It was all based on a lie- a lie that went on for 4 years, and changed what good I was. But now, I'm trying to find whom I was at one time. And it's getting there. Greet song- but too hurtful for me to even love again. It is funny, how just one "man" (hardly) or person; can make you rethink your music, the stuff you once loved in life...even who you are.
This is my favorite TVZ song. I sure wish he was still around. At least we have his music. I hope he found a nice place to rest (something like we're told Heaven is.)
It is "Femme Day" in France. As I started listening to this song the chill of fresh river water started to calmly flow through my body. The chill was so intense, it came back after the song ended. I dedicate this beautiful moment Townes gave us to my beautiful wife, Cheryl, who eases my pain and comes to me whenever I need her.
Townes uncle live a little west of San Antonio.I went to school and dated his cousin she was a nice woman. He came to stay at Charlie's house one time. He was down there hiding out. He was a hell of a character play any country song new or old. His uncle Charlie love when he played. His uncle Charlie ran his business out of a beer joint in San Antonio called blackies beer joint. Townes stayed with Charlie a few months like I said he was hiding out what for I don't know. Townes would play all the time he wrote some go song there could not tell you witch ones but they must have been good. Townes played and sing songs that he made up as he would play. It was wild the way he could come up with words with the music he played. Townes was a good man but guitar players minds think different then most people that's way they play guitar it's to help the mind out.
When someone sings his songs completely with closed eyes, then every watcher knows that something is not going right. "If I needed you" was probably sung by Townes in the state of full alcohol intoxication. Hans Rosernthal (A.H.R.D.)

+blackthemboots I love his music... but have heard enough stories to know he was not harmless, especially to himself. He took risks that endangered others and certainly hurt a lot of people he loved. Mental illness and addiction were the root cause, of course.
