I go back to this video a lot. mostly because the album has aged like the finest wine and just sounds incredible but there are so many little nuances it’s crazy. people’s reactions to music is wild, this album is such a masterwork. Three man weave might be my favorite song of all time. RIP GROGGS
I just realized why I'm the most hyped and into this album I can be when I watch this instead of just listening. It basically puts you on the bench with them. It's why reaction channels are so fucking huge: there's just something viscerally satisfying and socially fulfilling about sharing the experience of art, especially music, with others. There's no better feeling of comradery than when you're in the car with the homies, a beat drops that nobody expected, and the resulting "YOOOOOOOO" and jumping around is enough to crash the car. This simulates that feeling through video in the simplest, most basic way. I think it's something Injury Reserve have figured out better than most rappers: the human brain is fucking crazy, and you can make people feel and experience some wild emotions by pushing the limits of art. They definitely have mastered that psychological effect on By The Time I Get To Phoenix, but now it's almost the opposite: BTTIGTP is viscerally uncomfortable and disquieting to listen to, making you feel that "we them boiiissss ayyyy" vibe from previous albums just get ripped away with Groggs.
The point about reaction channels is really on point, I hadn't thought about that before like that. To some extent, if it's music that's a bit out of the mainstream, or stuff your friends might not listen to, reaction channels have their place. But what an indictment of the world we live in when people (young people especially) find bonding over art most rewarding when experienced through people they dont know and will never meet.
I keep coming back to this, its such an amazing experience being able to watch so many different people's reaction to a project I practically worship. Honestly, I dont say rip groggs enough. Rest in power to such a creative soul going through so much.
