83 Weeks #9: Great American Bash 1998

- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- On this episode, Eric wasted no time getting fired up at Conrad and the yelling was early and often in this one. Eventually the guys get around to discussing Dennis Rodman coming into WCW, Eric changing the schedule around for the boys, the end of the Orlando syndicated tapings, first day ticket sales for the Georgia Dome Nitro, the Jerry Sags lawsuit, the drug testing policy in more detail, what match Eric thinks you could put up against any Monday Night War era match, the silliness of Juventud's video on this show, poor Ron Reis, the horrible finishes on this show, what Doug did to ruin a match for Eric, Eddie's improv on this show, what made Eric sad about this show, why the Hogan/Bret tag didn't work, the thing Eric's wife could do better than these guys did, the silliness of a singles match for the tag titles, the Giant smoking, and Eric buries a guy to the point Conrad shuts the show down! Don't miss another controversial 83 Weeks!
Since 1984 every wrestling promoter has tried to best Vince McMahon and the World Wrestling Federation unsuccessfully… except one, Eric Bischoff. Eric beat Vince McMahon’s Monday Night RAW head-to-head in Monday Night Wars 83 consecutive times. 83 Weeks will take a deep dive into the highs and lows of Eric Bischoff’s unparalleled successes in the wrestling business.

I can’t believe I came across all these podcast 3 years later like damn pure gold I didn’t even know they did these podcast 😂😂
Facts😂 Conrad shouting mad me lose my shit😂😂
Lol the first 10 mins is gold...I thought Conrad was going to have a heart attack
Double S I never laugh so hard!!!
The dude comes off like a mark sometimes but i like the back in forth on this podcast.
I died laughing when E said Hulk was made in the AWA.
He's reaching so hard. Cool story, bro, indeed.
If only
The Dude he was CREATED in awa, which is what bischoff said. Which is the truth, mark
10 minutes in & already it’s chaos.... what a podcast ... I love it 👏
Oh god, I'm not even 13 minutes into this podcast and I just love it so much. Eric and Conrad are amazing together.
“Eric
“I paid no attention to what WWF was going”
Don’t change the channel because Mankind just won the WWF title
Bischoff”
chi tai He didn’t say “watching”, he said he “paid no attention to WWF”. Those are not the same.
bischoff also said in the past that he wanted to be totally different than wwf around late 1995. said wwf, was 'cartoonish and family entertainment and he wanted reality-based storylines and characters that appealed to the 18-34 demographic'
To be fair to Eric, it's easy to not watch the number 2 show when you are the number 1 show, but it changes the moment you become the number 2 show as you need to see why they are suddenly number 1.
Okay, this is pure fricken gold. One of the better podcast's in awhile. Good information and hilarious fricken banter. Love these dudes.
god damnit i feel ashamed about barely finding this gem..
high energy af LOL
This is the best episode to date. Love this stuff, we need more. Two men having an argument without fighting etc and after grabbing some shots etc. Good stuff Mr. Thompson and Mr. Bischoff
Best episode yet. But I still like: “IT’S FUCKING DAYTIME, ERIC!!”
Been waiting so long for something like that. Bravo Conrad, balls of steel. Now I'm all in.
So crazy that actual interviewers don’t ever blow up on their interviewees like that… It’s almost as if this isn’t an actual interview and it’s just a mark like yourself having the amazing opportunity to sit down with somebody who literally shape your childhood and then yelling at them because they didn’t have the answers that you like… Awesome.
damn
Conrads Laughing at Vince didnt make Hulk comment had me rolling as well.
Yeah I love Bischoff but that kind of was a “cool story, bro.”
I love how calm Eric is when Conrad is screaming.
The Raven character in WCW was an awesome addition. I don't think his contributions should be downplayed.
Huge fan of the show. Lately I’ve been going back into the archives and listening to episodes again when I have a craving to hear about certain time lines. Or to see if there’s episodes I might’ve skipped because I really want something I haven’t heard yet and that when I found this episode. I see I haven’t listened and I ask myself “why the hell did I skip this one? This is perfect” then I get ten minutes into it and the memories come flooding back.
I didnt discover 83 weeks till their AWA episode. I have been going back to into the archives. This is a podcast I wished I discovered sooner. Glad we picked The Great American Bash 98 cause we got this great episode about the business heading into this pay per view.
the beginning of this podcast makes me feel like a kid hiding in the closet while their parents scream at each other.
Josh Lowery awww poor josh
Can't say Eric isn't wrong
Host is a bitch
That delayed WTF at 10:41 has me in tears every time :D
This is the best opening to any of the dozens and dozens of episodes I’ve listened to. 😂😂😂
06:35
Conrad´s reaction to this made me burst out laughing in a cafe. Absolutely priceless!
:) :)
I think Eric comes across as a nice guy (personally that is; I can imagine he was a horrible boss) but I really appreciate how Conrad calls him out whenever he attempts to pass the blame or undeservedly pat his own back.
By far the best 10 minutes in podcast history...watch out Bruce Pritchard Eric Bishoff my be the new podcast champion
God Bless this episode.
When Conrad's start yelling, it's makes it even funnier. Great show
Conrad is such a good co host. I'd like to hear him with Jim Cornette.
@Jeffery Harris To each his own. To me, Conrad's behavior at the beginning was absolutely cringe worthy, VERY unprofessional.
@@shirleypena4133 I think he the best when he with Eric and Bruce. He seems nerves around Jim at times and he bullies Tony.
@@shirleypena4133Conrad’s biggest achievement prior to these podcasts were reading dirtsheets. So, it’s hilarious when he’s trying to call out guys like Prichard and Bischoff. All he knows is what he read from Keller and Meltzer, so it’s basically third-hand info.
Nice interview. The best part, by far, was the behind-the-scenes info about Ted Turner/TBS/Thunder. This is the stuff that nobody else really gets into. It's why I'm still lobbying for a show centered on the AOL/Time Warner drama! Nobody knows the full story. What better place to break it than 83 Weeks?
Yea that would be cool. How about a show about the Monday night wars? Like all the behind the scenes stuff. Sort of like a mad men type thing or somethin
In the first 15 minutes, these two cut a much better promo than current WWE stars.
Chris Jericho. Man of a 1004 holds segment where he read off all his holds and said Armbar 4 times was the greatest wrestling segment of all time. So underrated and not talked about much.
He read off 30 moves and said Armbar twice. They went to commercial in the middle of it and came back and he was still reading his list and said Armbar 2 more times before Malenko came out.
I love this podcast. No sugar coating on here pure truth.
Thank you guys for continually producing the best wrestling Podcast series on UA-cam
This show is getting better and better. I’ve got 24 episodes left to catch up!
This podcast BLOWS AWAY the Prichard podcast. Glad these two got together!
The one thing they have in common? Conrad is a dirtsheet-loving, Meltzer-sucking ASS in both.
Conrad at around 10mins 😂😂😂 The fact a grown man can get so fired up over wrestling gives me hope for humanity! 😅😅😅😅
Eric didn't make Jericho, Eddie or Benoit stars they did that themselves, he just gave them the exposure.
Gagne taught Hogan how to talk, showed him a Midwestern accent. Gagne worked with Hogan to hulk up, put his hand around the ear calling out. The maniac style. Gagne molded the raw dough. Hogan then goes over to Japan and irons out the kinks. By 1983, he was Hulk Hogan. Gagne just didn't get this creation was a historical anomaly like GG. Vince did and the rest was history.
When Conrad starts screaming. lmaooooo
Yes lol
It was glorious
YOU SIGNED ALL THE MOTHERFUCKERS. Im new here but im already in love. Thanks Bisch!
6:45 - 15:42 that was a really entertaining back and forth 😂😂. "Argue that, bitch!!"
That Yell at 9 min was brilliant. Im dying here.
Love Eric giving Conrad the business lol. Conrad needs to chill before he has an aneurysm
Oh. My. God! LOL! I’m only 15 minutes in and this is hilarious
God bless the first 10 minutes of this hahahaha! Conrad vs Cornette in a screaming rant off next please
Jeez. Half of the people, who were on this show, are gone now. Benoit, Kanyon, Eddie, Curt, Rick, Macho, and Piper. A lot can happen in 20 years.
This episode had more heat than the actual PPV. Might still be the greatest ep of all time. Lmao.
Did they ever talk about those legal battles with Ric on a later episode? I know the story and loved Ric’s promo on it, but damn I never heard Eric talk about it before. I’d love that history in the books opened up.
10 minutes in and I’m crying laughing
YourBoy Ken That yell at 9 min was brilliant.
YourBoy Ken 🤣🤣😭😭
Fuck yes lol, I love how they battle.
Conrad, as big as he is, sure has a high ass sissy voice when he screams 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Yeah me too lol. The yelling 🤣
i love when they argue. I cant stop laughing everytime they argue.
Conrad is such a mark. Eric is a good one.
Agreed. He's a nobody. He has the benefit of twenty years of hindsight and 10% of the actual facts. These shows aren't good with him they're good despite him. Out of all the podcasts out there he is one of the worst hosts. Cornet and Nash both have way better hosts the only reason anyone puts up with Conrad as cuz he's a big money mark
Conrad is a pretty rich successful Mark to be fair
The best part is whenever Conrad leans away from the mic and shouts out of frustration.
Conrad you should reach out to Paul Heyman and see if he'll do a podcast with you as well. Him or someone like Joey Styles. We need to hear more stories about The ECW. If anyone can make it happen it's you.
Stony420 that would rule
I wrote him that on twitter before and he said Heyman agrees. I think they may be waiting until Paul isnt with WWE anymore so he can be completely honest and raw
I second this idea! This is Extreme with Paul Heyman & Conrad Thompson...
Absolutely!!!
Agreed
“They can’t make appearances as Razor Ramon!”
Solid episode. Really enjoyed the debate where Conrad blew his wad, and the Beefcake monologue at the end was interesting. Keep up the great work. I’m really enjoying this series.
Eric and Conrad yelling... this exchange should have been in A Few Good Men. Colonel Bischoff, did you steal their stars? YOU'RE GOD DAMNED RIGHT I DID!!!
Eric didn't sugarcoat this one in fear Conrad would eat that.
(Ron Simmon’s voice) DAMN
My God I have cramps laughing so hard the 1st 10 mins......🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
ERIC!!!!!!!! Make that a T Shirt. Just an Angry Conrad Face yelling ERIC!!!! I love when the big fella gets fired up.
Stony Plain Heatbag YES YES YES YES ERIC!!!!!!!!
Shit please make that into a shirt!!
Stony Plain Heatbag 🤣🤣
And “IT’S F#CKIN DAYTIME, ERIC!!”
Never heard this side of Conrad. This is fantastic
Bischoff had a mind for the business the problem was the guys over him who handcuffed the product like Vince handcuffs the product today. A lot of other things helped end WCW like the giant egos and let’s not forget our favorite “bro” man Russo………
This episode got me hooked on 83weeks
52:40 the way Eric tells that story has me floored
LMFAO!! Those first 15 minutes 😂😂😂
I know I’m not alone in this . I would gladly pay more money for a Brutus the Fing Barber autograph if I knew he forged Hogans signature too. That is just perfect . Lmao
From 1984-1988 all of vinces top talent were guys he got from the AWA. But vince gets a pass from conrad and gives eric shit for using alot of wwf guys in 96-99. Also eric is right on when saying he made jericho, benoit , guerrero ect into stars. Because nobody knew who the fuck these guys were in 1994 despite being in ecw and japan. Vince wouldnt have signed any of those guys in 99-00 if they hadnt gotten over in wcw. Lastly hulkamania was born in the awa 1981-83. Thats when he did rocky 3.
The WWF's only role in the rise of Hulk Hogan was Vince Sr.'s refusal to let him do Rocky III which in turn sent him into Gagne's waiting arms. The AWA received a nationally recognized personality and probably should have built the entire company around him at that point in time.
I liked Raven.
Original Zearoh Quote Raven.....NEVER MORE
Raven was a great gimmick
To be fair he made Sting a huge star.
The Great American Bash is one of my favorite WCW PPVs from that year. I hadn't watched the show in forever, but it was nice to go down memory lane with Eric Bischoff giving insight as he did a watchalong with fans on his Twitch channel: 83 Weeks, that you can go check out before he started recording with Conrad Thompson.
The first three matches were really good and I thought Guerrero Vs. Guerrero was the best match of the show. Booker T worked double duty and you saw a future world champion in the making.
Eric Bischoff was also able to book the dream tag team match that not even Vince McMahon was able to make happen.
The best part was how hot the Baltimore crowd was for most of the night. They were even into Juventud Guerrera Vs. Reese!
This episode is 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
I know this is old, but Eric's logic behind Scott & Kevin coming to WCW because they weren't treated right, can be disproved by the very first promo Scott cut when he first showed up on Nitro. "You people know who I am... You want a war? You people want a war? You gonna get one". What part of that says "I wasn't treated right when I was last here"?
Wow I never knew brother Brutus was such a con artist.
The Wolfpack and NWO Hollywood split is what hurt WCW for me
Love these podcasts. Thanks Conrad and Eric.from FOXY in Mildura Australia.
BEST OPENING TO A SHOW EVER !!!!!!!!
Eric "stole" Hogan, Macho, Hennig, Mean Gene, Heenan, etc... just like Vince "stole" Hogan, Macho, Hennig, Mean Gene, Heenan, etc.....
They both did the same thing.
They all came him.... lul
Exactly...which is why I can't stand when the WWE and Vince act like "victims" of talent raids during the war's. Vince stole talent from all over the country. He didn't create ANYBODY when they first started buying out territories. Hogan, Savage, Heenan, Jesse Ventura, Piper, Snuka, and on and on and on. Watch the documentary on the AWA and you'll see that without the AWA Vince would have NEVER been as successful as he became because Verne Gagne created stars and characters that got over, then Vince would come in and make better offers to steal them from Verne. Eric was completely right about Hogan becoming Hogan in the AWA. Conrad just sound's EXTREMELY uneducated when he say's Vince made Hogan. Vince was able to make Hogan MAINSTREAM with his PLATFORM and especially with Wrestlemania...but the HULK character got as over as over get's in AWA and Verne fine tuned the gimmick to make it work...all Vince had to do was pay Hogan to make the jump and shoot some promos while feeding him some heels. So all this bullshit about how WCW took talent from Vince...it was just karma.
"how do we fix it...VAN HAMMER"
The X-FACTOR!
That has never been the answer to any question, ever.
During Vince's INITIAL WM push, those guys were READY FOR PRIME Time! I'm talking once he brought in Hogan,Andre, Snuka, Santana, Piper, Steamboat, Orndorff, Studd, Bundy, US Express, etc. All Vince had to do was use his new age marketing and production to make them bigger. And in the case of some of them, gave them a new nickname. Or gave them a mascot. Even once Savage came in, Savage was already who he was. Vince just added Liz to the mix. Jake was who he was. He just wore flashier trunks and had a snake.
Once we get into Taker, Beefcake, Adorable Adrian, Bossman, Akeem, Repo Man, Demolition, etc. those are LEGIT characters Vince created. And of course down the road in the Attitude Era with Austin, Rock, D-X, Mankind, etc. In the case of Hogan, the AWA created that Hulkamania wave. Once Hogan went to WWF in late 83, he was READY TO WIN the strap immediately. BECAUSE in the AWA, Hogan with Verne's help found his niche. Vince just had the right stuff to push Hogan to his ultimate star power. NO OTHER company could have done that with Hulk.
Verne should have pulled the trigger and made Hogan champ. At least he could have kept Hogan in the company longer. And POSSIBLY have him around long enough to coincide with the LOD, Brody, Abby, Hansen, and the Freebirds coming in down the road. So instead of Hogan leaving in late 83, maybe he stays another year or two.
And Conrad. Muther****** i spent the $900 to get my all out tickets and starcast platinum bracelets. Because Conrad rules and thank you for every starcast. Ive been to both so far and cant wait for 3 in Chicago. Keep doing what you re doing bro
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If I had a billion dollars to throw at wrestling, there's only two people I call. Eric Bischoff and Jim Cornette. Period. And then I just sit back and watch...
I’m only 12 minutes in. And this is the best episode yet.
I’d love to see Conrad and Bret Hart do a live show sit down
Conrad and Bret
Conrad and Jim Cornette would be awesome, too!
I'd be ready to blow my head off ten minutes in from Bret's whining...
Conrad but everything you are saying in the beginning about Scott and Kevin applies to what Bischoff originally said about Hulk and the AWA
Edit: still listening, and now it comes off even more hypocritical when you scuff at his mentions of making Eddie and Benoit stars
I just don't understand how anyone could see it any other way. How can Eric say Gagne is the reason Hogan was popular but then say he made Hall and Nash bigger stars....which he did but Vince made Hulk bigger. It's the same exact thing.
Eric mentioned that Hulk apparently claims Verne gave him the proper start, to build himself along with his Rocky 3 appearance.
as he went back in that segment, also saying Vince gave a better platform and bigger audience exploit building upon his AWA experience and more so promoting Hogan as a TV star rather than actual wrestler compared to the original build from Verne Gagne.
Milenko/Jericho was perfect because of how different the guys personalities were, but how similar they wrestle. 100% believable. All Jericho’s stuff is memorable.
OoooooooooooooWEE THAT BEGINNING WAS LIIITTT
Omg Conrad and Eric is amazing 😂😂
It's surprising they are still friends
I loved this pay per view. I gave it a 8/10. It was great. This is when WCW was hot and the wars were still interesting. This Bash was a homerun. It was interesting how they had Sting and the Giant feuding over the WCW World Tag Team Championship. Nice change in the main event scene without including Hogan in every pay per view main event.
The debate at the start of this episode made no sense. Eric Bischoff called Vince McMahon the Verne Gagne of the 90's in WCW magazine. Eric is right that Vince built the WWF on the back of AWA and made those characters bigger. Eric did much the same with WWF while producing a highly unique product.
So...I don't have all the pieces here, but I'ma go ahead and freestyle that the Beefcake episode on StWW happened as a result of the end of this episode. >.>
Awesome 🤣🤣
Eric - 0
You - 1
Eric is cool in these casts - even though he answeres every question like he is on the stand - I get that but - Eric you are a punk in this one - COME ON BRO...🤣🤣 “I am the best cohost there was” 😂😂😂 love this one
Homerun Guys THANK YOU
In the first part of the segment, I totally agree with Eric. Vince McMahon did not create Hulkamania. Hulkamania started in the AWA. Vince made Hulk Hogan an even bigger star by giving him the world championship (Verne Gagne wouldn't do that). However, Hulkamania was running wild and a sensation before Hogan came to the WWF and that was the point Eric was making that Conrad was too ignorant to understand.
Stephen Hanft That was the biggest mistake Verne ever made and not have a run with Hogan as champ. The fans didn't want to see the Dusty finish over and over again but Verne was stuck on having Nick Bockwinkel as his champ. Vince gave Hogan a better deal.
Stephen Hanft Sort of, but Hogan wasn't a worldwide star until he came to the WWF. The AWA was still a regional promotion.
But he can't use the fact that Vince only made Hogan a bigger star against him and then in the next breath take credit for making Nash and Hall bigger stars.
Rocky 3 made Hogan a star.
@@MARKOUTTV Eric's point is if your going to vilify him for signing Hall and Nash. Then you got to do the same thing to Vince.
WCW was the Saturday Night Live of Wrestling. Starts a segment off great. Finishes them terribly.
WWF/E had some terrible endings, too.
Ok, so I thought the Starrcade 97 argument was the biggest blowout they had. Holy man, dude. This one was epic.
Eric props at sticking to your truth and not letting Conrad break or make you stumble your stance. It is either the truth or the truth You have remembered it as. Dont bail on this podcast Bischoff this is gold and finally you have started slinging shit back at the ones who have tried to bury you in the past. Keep pressing those buttons Conrad. Long Live 83 Weeks!!!!!
Best... episode... EVER lol it's clear they weren't sitting across the table from each other lol
These 2 are fucking awesome! One of my favorite episodes. You guys rock 🤘🏽
WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!!! WOO woo wooooooo!!! GREAT show. That Conrad is smart. Theyre back on track!! They got along faar too well last episode. This ones got the HEAT back!!!! NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE
I love when Conrad fights with Eric or Bruce!! Lol this is some entertaining shit
Bischoff III
Conrad: Sorry I got you into this Eric.
Bischoff: No your not!
What happened to the story eric promised us about hogan and bret's rivalry from hulk's perspective? I figured there would be more details on that.
Alex Furtado same here. So disappointed.
More bischoff bullshit
Hogan: That doesn't work for me brother
If Conrad held Vince and the WWE to the same as Bischoff then he'd say WWE didn't create a star till Angle.
Guy What about The Rock?
MetalHead4Life94 He worked USWA first, and was a tag champion there.
USWA was wwf's farm system..
I love how conrad forgets to mention how most of WWF's main event scene at the time started in WCW. So Vince stole too. In fact Vince stole more then bishoff ever did. What killed ECW more? Bischoff signing Jericho,Dean, Eddie, Rey, and Beniot or Vince signing Their top star and world champion Tazz and top heels the Dudleys a few weeks into their national cable deal.......that Vince a year later took.
Jesus Conrad! If I didn't know any better, the way u yelled at Eric, I'd have thought Eric was bald and had a goatee! LOL. Great job fellas!!
Hot damn Easy E owning Conrad right off of the bat. This is gold!
David R It's not difficult. Conrad always makes leaps in logic in his arguments that Bruce either doesn't bother exploiting or isn't capable enough to do so.
Eric: McMahon didn't necessarily make Hogan a star. He definitely gave him a platform--
Conrad: Motherfucker, you're gonna sit here and act like Verne Gagne is why you signed Hogan to WCW?!?!
Audience: wut?
Eric is a breath of fresh fucking air.
Agreed, Eric is right.
Hes one of those kind of people that think if they yell that makes what there saying correct.
David R Not quite. They both made good points. It sure as hell is entertaining.
by saying Hogan got his fame in the AWA??? Oh OK... Eric cant answer a Yes/No question in under 5 mins!
love listening to these and im not even a big wrestling fan very interesting
Can't agree with Eric's comments on Raven. The guy was cutting some of the best promos in the company at this time. His matches were consistent too.
I agree
Raven never got the shot he deserved outside of ECW
