@Lakers fan I agree except Tony was never really up on the play by play. He didn't seem to keep his knowledge of moves current. Hence why they added Tenay later. Schiavone and Tenay were two halves of the greatest play by play announcer ever, they just happened to be two people. Tony had the voice and the talent, Tenay had the knowledge but a totally inappropriate voice for commentary. And Bobby Heenan on color just finished off the package. I will put those three with JR and the King as tied for greatest announce team.
Loved the 96 sting look. The transition between surfer to crow, in my opinion, was the best version of sting.

I really dug Sting’s look in 1996 even before he went full crow. He wore most of the same ring gear as before but he looked so much cooler with brown hair.
Another awesome episode of 83 weeks Sting was hands down my all time favorite wrestler when I was growing up as a kid so listening to this episode for me was a total treat.
You guys are really bringing back my childhood with the 83 weeks podcast the Monday night Wars was such a great time period to be a wrestling fan and I love hearing these stories and getting Eric's take on how he felt the way it went down.

Stings build as the crow character was one of the reasons nitro beat raw for 83 weeks he was that cool icon of wrestling as the undertaker was in the wwf
Certainly one of my favourite stories and arcs from the 90's. Sting played it to perfection top marks to him for that.
Sting's best "in-ring" work was when he was "Surfer Sting" that's probably why certain people prefer that character of Steve Borden's. However, the best character evolution and build up to one match was probably "Crow" Sting (WCW) vs Hogan (nWo) Starrcade 1997.
Unfortunately the anticipation to STARRCADE 1997 farted out once the ppv went BLAH...question is; even if HOGAN vs STING tore the house down THEN WHAT? Does Hogan vanish? Does the nWo go to shit? Does Hogan vanish only for the nWo to reform with a mind blowing new leader...or is nWo completely done and WCW comes to power once again with a whole new competitive angle. If Hogan vanishes; what happens to Nash and Hall ??? Whats the aftermath of a successful DEFINITE victor between Hogan vs Sting. Orrrr is it revealed that nWo confronts Sting only for Sting to take over nWo because Hogan was a punk leader. YOU WANT CORRUPTION? YOU WANT DARKNESS? TO HELL WITH LIFE! YOU'VE BEEN STUNG; FOREVER
I was born in 93. so in 96 when sting started to go towards the crow sting. I thought it was a great idea in wrestling then I later saw the movie when I was 4 and was like oh that's cool sting is in the movie. later to find out that wcw copied the character in a way but changed the story a bit in the way it was made. I loved the movie and I loved the way wcw made it work for sting. rip brandon lee.

Brilliant episode .... Hulk Hogan was my first hero & Ultimate warrior was my favourite in WWF but when I discovered WCW in 1992 Sting instantly became my favourite all time wrestler, seeing his transition into the Crow Sting was & still is one of the coolest things to ever happen in pro wrestling! ✌️
Sting vs nwo is by far one of the greatest storylines of all times the starrcade match sucked but the build up was incredible it's in my top 3 along with mankind vs undertaker and sabu vs taz

People can say what they want about Scott Hall but I knew he was a class act years ago when he just gave the Intercontinental championship belt away to a dying child. He has overcame everything from killing a man to drug and alcohol abuse and I have nothing but respect for him. He changed wrestling for ever in my opinion. I'll never forget seeing Hall on WCW Nitro that first night before Kevin made the jump. I knew then something big was happening and I never looked back. All I can say is that the stars aligned perfectly at the beginning of The nWo. Nothing has come close to being that awesome since in my opinion. I thank you for that Eric. Yeah, the next day during PE class I was telling one of my friends, "Guess what?! RAZOR RAMON WAS ON NITRO! He just came through the audience and made his way to the ring" He couldn't believe it cuz he missed that episode. He got all excited and asked me several times if I was kidding LOL Good ol innocent times, man. We we're in 3rd grade back then, but I still remember that particular convo and where it happened

Conrad, just so you know, Sting actually did speak the first night he appeared in the Crow gimmick. Look up Nitro from October 21, 1996. He confronts the NWO in the ring and talks for about a minute.
It was kinda cool because it was a half-way look to the face paint too; around his mouth was still unpainted (like surfer sting) but he had the white paint with black slashes/tears going down vertically.

Eric makes a good point about trying to get the fans to hate Jimmy Hart being tricky. Even though he was such a good heel for so long, there was just something about him that made him likeable no matter what.
Didn't know that WCW were still doing the Sting dropping from the rafters deal post-Owen incident? Thought they dropped it long before then.
Really enjoyed this one. Sting's such an interesting character. This is a great period in his career. Hope they do Sting in 97 soon!

@@hammbone8184 well crow sting didn't talk for a long time, didn't fight for a while, and did much less than Austin did. Austin did a lot he did big promos, came in on vehicles, he did big stuff the comment was saying while doing so little and Austin was doing a lot so I'd have to say the original commenter is correct.

The true definition of less is more. Crow Sting's beginning reminds of the old horror movies, a slow build that keeps you hooked. Then they went all 2000s horror movies on us and ramped it up to a million and totally derailed it.

Sting was a wcw guy hogan had to turn heel because us fans who grew up off of him in the 80s were getting older and hogan is a better heel and it really looked like it was wwf vs wcw so they did it right

Sting actually knew how to wrestle Hogan would perform the same 3 are 4moves his entire career
Hogan blew up in the 80's and was hot. But his wrestling was terrible. And it was just the same thing for years. Hollywood was more entertaining in the NWO. He's still doing his character today. He's always had a good look. And he was good on the mic. But when you look Austin and the Rocks work. They blew him away. He just was not good in the ring.
Hogan was a brand name that's it. It worked, he sold a lot of tickets. He never really put anybody over. I cringe hearing his name now. He's career is done. But he always has to make his appearance which nobody cares about anymore. The guys today should get the spotlight, his time passed a long time ago. Watching him wrestle the rock, hbk etc... He was terrible. They had to sell the crap out of his moves. They shouldn't have brought him back then. He was done.
@@packpock4369 Nobody cares when his music plays do you not hear the crowd? Only one wrestler truly rivial's Hogan pops and Its Austin. Hogan got the rock booed out the building in the Rock's heyday.

I love the darker version of Sting, this was the right transition to make during this time period. The Red Sting is my favorite; he had more personality during The Wolfpac era.

This is a fantastic episode, loved the transition between surfer sting to crow sting. Job well done Conrad and Eric. Any possibility you guys may wanna do an episode on another big wcw star changing his entire character. Scott Steiner's 1997/1998 would be an interesting episode to discuss the story behind the transition from being in one of the best tag teams of the 90s to big poppa pump!

This era in WCW shows how bad WWF misused Lex once he turned Babyface. He worked with top talent in top storylines and won multiple titles in WCW; while their ratings were at their highest. WWF wouldn't let him hold any title.

Raven actually got over pretty strongly in WCW. With a bit more focus from the company think he could have got over even more.

Sting and Lex stealing that cop car is hilarious. Not necessarily because it’s “hahahaha” funny but because of the absurdity of STING AND LEX STEALING A COP CAR IN CHARACTER. Two yoked shirtless dudes in tights, one with his face painted, steal a cop car to chase down a Limo that Sting just through a break through. It looks ridiculous and is totally absurd but that’s what makes it so funny.

Nash is right though. Two guys with bats did pretty much tame on the company. I was 12 at the time and agree with you too. Everyone watched to see what happened next.

I really loved the answer towards the end the about Sting rejuvenating his career. At the same time, it made me really sad that WCW didn't stick around longer. It just makes me think of Russo who "created the attitude era" & McMahon who thinks that if he didn't create it doesn't matter.

One reason WCW was winning is because their undercard matches were better than everything else, except the WWF main events.
Jamaal Davis I remember watching it live with my Dad. I loved it!
It totally was. But watch the match where Goldberg beats Hogan. Not a great technical match but it blew your mind especially because no one believed a title change like that was going to happen on free tv. People were even throwing crap in the ring waiting for the bs DQ finish and then as soon as it was over adults were screaming and kids were crying. Certainly the most powerful tv match ever.

2 things. Having been a huge pure fan in the late 90s as a teen also obsessed and knee deep in the Monday night "war" as anyone could have been in those days, it's an odd thing to say when you hear me say that my all time favorite wrestler is Dynamite Kid Tom Billington, but definitely in my top 5 is Jeff "nWo Sting" Farmer. It's weird because I like my wrestling cotton trunks, National Wrestling ASSOCIATION (NOT ALLIANCE) real style while it is of course a work. The NWA was a sister organization of the NBA which was not the National Basketball Association but the National Boxing Association today it is known as the WBA. ANYWAY the reason nWo Sting (AKA Lightning AKA Cobra AKA Black Scorpion AKA Super J) is one of my all time favorites definitely top 5 is character related although he was absolutely a serviceable big man. The evil Sting, more mysterious then Sting himself in a way. He called himself the Black Scorpion as well which was a big angle that wound up in infamy due to it's horrible pay off. But taking the pre Ric Flair reveal mystique of the character was an awesome touch. It's a shame they didn't do more with him stateside and even Jeff himself has talked about it but in Japan he was just so cool and stood out as unique to everyone else. Furthermore I am a Japanese historian by trade, specializing in the late Muromachi period. But Japanese culture and tradition has, since the very beginning and its evidenced in their oldest surviving history book the Kojiki which is a massive plagiarism of a Chinese history replacing Chinese heroes kings and emperors with Japanese ones. Japan has long taken the brilliant original ideas of other countries and made these things their own and often their duplications far exceed the originals. The nWo Sting is a brilliant demonstration of that aspect of Japanese culture. I would really like to have heard more about this in this episode. Lol there will never be a 83 weeks episode devoted to nWo Sting. That being said what would be the best subject to talk about him well a 1996 Sting focus would be it. Well maybe they'll do it if they ever get to an nWo Japan episode or a Fall Brawl 96 episode
Last point. Where they were talking about the Crow and Sting taking that character on and using it and the serious federal trademark lawsuit going on. Conrad is surprised Turner legal let WCW do the crow thing and Eric says he rolled the dice and by luck nobody messed with them. It's a shame neither guy is familiar with the author of the Crow graphic novel. The man who created the whole Crow character and everything Jim O'Barr. I say this because he is one of the most incredibly cool and incredibly down to earth people in the world. I think he and Eric would get along famously in fact. The truth is Jim is so cool that if he did know about it he would probably be a huge fan of it and the thought of starting a lawsuit over it would never even occur to him. Hes that cool of a dude.

Stings transformation from the happy go lucky California surfer dude,to the brodeing Crow character?Was one of the pillars of Wcws success.You needed a good guy to take on monster heels Hollywood Hogan and the NWO.Some of the greatest Writing in Wrestling History.The talent on that WCW roster was Top of the industry and it was Stocked.Frustrateing the company doesn't exist anymore.

The Sting/Owen Hart discussion seems off to me, Owen's incident happened in 1999, Sting joined the Wolfpac in 1998 and if I remember correctly stopped coming down from the rafters after that, even when he became black and white again
I don't think you're wrong, I remember it that way too. 20 years later I think it's hard to get timelines right.
It definitely happened in April 1999 (still before Owen's death) when he first came back in black/white, and I also remember a few times in 2000 (and I remember seeing some videos recently) where it happened. Maybe during the Vampiro program? I'm sure it happened. He actually dropped in TNA in 2007 in a match against Christopher Daniels also.
Stephen, you are correct. I just checked a video of Vampiro and Sting and he did come down from the rafters. My mistake.
sting was the first one to come down from the rafters. granted shawn michaels zip lined from the rafters at a wrestlemania against bret hart in the iron man match. sting after the owen hart incident stopped doing it cause it was considered to dangerous. but the difference was sting was in the right outfit to do it. owen was put in a construction harness and it was a shit show before it even began
Sting being the third guy sounds interesting in a couple of ways. One being you remove the face paint and he just becomes an arrogant a*******. Hulk Hogan battles the NWO for a while with the WCW on his back so to speak. Then come to find out he had to deal with Hall Nash and Bischoff all along and they double-cross sting which then brings the crow sting ... Just a thought

I'm not a board The Raven criticism. He had a storyline and ECW. And you would think with letting him keep the name that you would some what know his background of his character. And then he had the whole ended up being a spoiled rich kid thing acting all depressed. I don't know there was a little bit of substance there. Ravens was dope character

83 Weeks is by far the best. I liked WHW when it was regular shows but after it turned to exclusively watch alongs I stopped listening.
Yeah that is partly the problem for me. When it's watch alongs there's more down time for them to go off topic. The other format is more focused.
I also remember Sting quoting Jim Morrison and saying it's time for him to break on through to the other side. I can't find that promo anywhere but I know it happened. I also remember Hall and Nash looking stoned and saying something like we just got finished with the Jim Morrison plan. Meaning they just smoked out lol. I can't find anything on that promo either though. I also remember Sean Waltman wearing a Jim Morrison shirt that said Break on through. I used to have that shirt. If anyone knows a link for those promos please post a link.

My 83 Weeks subscription on Twitch actually unsubscribed itself, and had to resubscribe. Perhaps the reason of the decline of subs is related to this.

yes evidently they thought that faking a heel turn for sting would work. it set up fall brawl 96 and the next night sting telling everyone who didn't believe him to stick it. meanwhile sting kicked the nwo's ass in the war games match while flair, arn and lex just stood there wondering what the hell was going on.

Sting was great against the NWO but once he joined the group and became the 200th member of the NWO he was no longer big .Just like Henning ,macho man ,Rude and Hart he ended up getting lost in the 200 member group .This left Flair ,Goldber and Piper even I dare say it Jeff Jarret and elevated them more so .If any of them would have joined the NWO they would have been lost and this is why benoit never joined them he knew it was better for his career .
For me Sting should have maybe made his own faction maybe take over Ravens flock with benoit ,guerrero ,mysterio ,malenko and Alex wright .Along with ravens flock they would have brought in more ecw wrestlers into the mix to go against the NWO since Eric wasn't allowing the horseman to go over .
Remember in 97 the horseman consisted of AA ,dillinger,flair ,mongo ,Greene ,benoit and malenko .They were also helping the dungeon of doom ,piper and his other 2 scottsman ,Goldberg ,sting ,luger plus Henning also wanted to be a horseman along with jarret who I also mentioned .They could've squashed the 200 members of the NWO easily but nooo Eric was short sighted. Then he allowed Nash and Hogan to destroy the company .

The WWE is so bad back stage. 4 people having a discussion standing in a semi circle having what is supposed to be an unfilmed discussion. Who stands in a semi circle? In reality.
