    I'm so glad I got to watch both WCW and WWF during the Monday Night Wars. In those days it really did seem like everybody was watching. It's impossible to explain to people who weren't there. I had always watched wrestling sporadically, but I really got into it around 1996, and didn't stop watching until WWF purchased WCW. My step dad would order almost every PPV. It was insane! I watched both, but I was more invested in WCW. I'd switch back and forth depending on what matches were taking place, but mostly I stuck with Nitro. They had more of the older wrestlers I grew up with like Hogan and Sting, and I guess I felt a loyalty to those guys more than I did anyone WWF had to offer. That Taker Mankind match was insane though. As much as I loved WCW that is my favorite match of all time. I've forgotten a lot of the matches that took place back then, but I'll never forget that one.

    I can't believe it's already been 20 years... I remember sitting up watching this in my dad's living room and so much electricity coming from the TV. My palms were sweaty like I was watching my team in the playoffs! The whole build-up with Hogan throwing out Scott Hall first was so fucking cool. I always see people saying it was a waste and should've been on PPV but I totally disagree. I mean, I understand that from the business side of things it might have been a waste, but I liked that it was such a surprise and felt like we got to see something really special. I always remembered that date, July 6, 1998, like it was a super bowl or something. I was way into the Goldberg machine at that time, so it was a great time to be a rasslin fan. Besides, we were poor, PPVs were for rich people hahaha!

    I had watched & enjoyed wrestling as a kid. But I was seventeen and flipping through the channels when I fell upon this episode of Nitro. I was amazed by the storytelling in this single episode and it immediately turned me from a casual fan to a lifelong addict to this day. So a huge thank you from this fella to Easy E for just straight-up telling the best over-arcing story in wrestling to date w/ WCW versus the NWO.

  • @josephmatthews7698
    @josephmatthews7698 5 років тому +25

    This was the greatest match of my life as a kid. I just watched it again. It's only 7 minutes long and no exceptional spots but it brought a tear to my eye even today.
    Even as a kid I knew titles never change hands except on PPV and we'd seen it 1000000x on raw a teaser match that never amounted to anything and a wasted couple of hours of anticipation.
    No one expected Goldberg to win. NO ONE. We expected a run in or Hogan to cheat and ruin Goldberg's streak.
    As soon as it looked like Goldberg had a chance Curt Hennig came to the ring and we thought "oh here comes the BS DQ" and the fans there even started throwing stuff into the ring expecting it.
    But then magic happened as Karl Malone gave Hennig the cutter and Hogan got the spear. You thought. "Hm? Nah..."
    More fans threw trash in the ring ready for the BS. This had built for YEARS they were not going to give the payoff away for free.
    Then the suplex and the referee started counting.. "1... 2..."
    No f'ing way! Where's the DQ? Where's the non finish? This payoff is years in the making! Did someone screw up? Is Hogan going to kick out?
    "3"
    Stunned silence followed by the entire arena erupting like you've never heard on TV before or since. There are kids in the audience crying with joy as the payoff finally took place but no one could believe it.
    It was like watching a movie for 3 years where the good guy just got the crapped kicked out of him over and over until the last ten minutes he finally saves the world.
    Truly a historic night that I'll never forget in pro wrestling and I sincerely thank Mr. Bischoff for letting me experience that kind of joy as a child with my less than stellar home life. Good guys can win.

      I'm really happy it worked for so many people, back then wrestling had a much more giving audience which created a symbiotic relationship at times to make things work. With that said though I was one of the few that hated Goldberg, I just thought he got by on very little and looked real by hitting for real. Though I'd still agree he was great for me too cos I was so in to someone beating him I was on the edge of my seat lol. Kinda like how people were with Cena except Cena could work and deserved his spot. I sometimes think fans are backward

    If you want to see how well known Turners approach to lawsuits was I think one of the best examples is a lawsuit filed against them by a wrestler named Rick Reeves. The dude was a wrestler who never wrestled for WCW which was his rationale for his lawsuit. His lawsuit essentially hinges on the claim that he had tried for years to be hired by WCW but that he never was because WCW racially discriminated against African Americans. Basically his claim was that the only reason he wasn’t hired was because of his race.
    But what makes it clear that Turners handling of lawsuits was a big factor in his lawsuit is that one of his arguments for why WCW had harmed him was the lost earnings he should have made working there, including the claim that them not hiring him prevented him from having a launching point to be able to work in the WWF because if he’d had the chance to wrestle for WCW then he would’ve had the chance to use that time in WCW to be able to work in the WWF. The clear irony of making such an argument would be that if he was such a qualified wrestler who was never hired by WCW solely due to the fact that he was black and discriminated against then he should have been able to work for the WWF instead.
    If his talent was at a level that the only thing that kept him from being hired on was due to his race it wouldn’t make any sense that he would need to have been hired by WCW to have an opportunity to work in the WWF. It would be interesting to see what attempts he had made to work in the WWF because he makes it sound like he only tried to work in WCW and not the WWF. Clearly a better argument for not being hired due to race would be having worked in the WWF and being able to point out that you were good enough to work for the other major company but not for this one. But claiming that not being hired here prevented your chance to be hired for the other major company despite your talent and because of race doesn’t truly make sense. Not sure how that suit actually ended for him but when you look at an argument like that it seems pretty clear that you filed your lawsuit because there was a reputation that you’d get a settlement in doing so.

      Nah I like Bruce Pritchard better, he has been in the business longer and been apart better moments, and grew up in the business as a kid, That's goes way back to the early 1970s and he was part of both WWE boom, golden Era periods, the 1980s Rock "N" Wrestling connection and the late 90s the Attitude Era, he has more knowledge and knows about pro wrestling more then Eric Bischoff. Plus he was part of the territory days. 46 years in the business alot wealth of knowledge and been apart of more iconic moments and seen things and been a around great eras.

    Giving it away for free was genius. I gave up on wrestling back when The Ultimate Warrior beat Hogan at WM. So I had been away from WWF for like 8 years and didnt know much about WCW. I remember it being on at a friend's house and i was like no way is Hogan losing the belt to this nobody. My friend was like Goldberg is the best man, undefeated. I was enthralled by the match. I bought the PPV that Saturday, Bash at the Beach 98. So that free match lead immediately to a PPV buy, and many many more. It got me back into WWF to. I went to multiple WMs. That one free match made me a wrestling fan again for years and years. Then of course the WCW and NWO Invasions and the rise of John Cena as the new Hogan killed it. The last truly great match was Hogan Rock at WM18. Maybe Flair HBK at WM28(?)

      I was mad about Warrior defeating Hogan in 1990. I was a Hulkamaniac as a child. I pretty much quit watching wrestling. The only way I knew about current wrestlers was playing current wrestling video games on Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. Then one day, when I was 13 (1996) I was channel surfing and I caught a glimpse of my childhood idol dressed in black and white and doing dastardly things much to the chagrin of the crowd. I saw a man I remembered as a kid with spiky blonde hair and face paint come out in the rafters looking like the Crow, wearing a trench coat with long, dark hair.
      I was like "wait a minute....THAT'S Sting!?!....and Hogan is a BAD GUY?!?...." and I fell right back into the world of professional wrestling. From that point in 1996 I watched WCW and taped WWF to watch right afterwards every Monday for the next few years. Until WCW folded. Saw every moment of Goldberg's rocket to the top and the split of the nWo.....I loved it all. I actually really miss WCW, to be honest. I liked WWF, but I liked WCW's Monday show a little better.

    Ultimate Warrior,Lex Luger,Goldberg...interesting the guys that Hogan was willing to put over and their reputations as in ring workers (or lack thereof) compared to his. I guess if Flair made Sting & Steamboat,one could say Hogan made Warrior & Goldberg.

    I don’t know if it (Goldberg vs Hogan) should have been saved for a pay per view, because at the time it didn’t feel that way. If it had gone that way, the main event should still have been Hall vs Goldberg. Then Hogan/Goldberg at the next Ppv for sure

    • @Matt-cr4vv
      @Matt-cr4vv Рік тому

      I think part of the difficulty of holding off for a PPV was tied to the fact that Hogan had matches for the next two PPVs with celebrities already happening. The next PPV was the Rodman match. The following was the Leno match. So the decision to hold off for a PPV would’ve come down to giving up one of those celebrity matches to have the match or waiting until the September PPV to have this match as the main event. So you’d be deciding about giving up the mainstream media attraction of the celebrities being involved in those matches by swapping this match in or risking the intrigue of the match cooling off over the two months you held off to have the match be on PPV.
      If you didn’t have those celebrity matches happening then I think it’s an easier call to put this on PPV. But when you’re staring down the fact that you realistically can’t put it on PPV for a couple months or you can put it on a show in Atlanta when Goldberg is red hot. And the attraction of having an exciting television product could draw in more fans who then invest in your product and decide to start buying your PPVs. So I think this decision gets a lot more criticism than it warrants in the full context of the situation. Now if there weren’t those celebrity matches happening and they’d still put it on TV then I feel like criticism would be more warranted than it is.

      The smart money would have book a rematch at starrcade 98 hogan v goldberg, but wcw kept losing ground in the ratings, so they ditched that idea and went with goldberg. v nash instead. To this day I have no idea why Hogan went along with it considering he never had a rematch with goldberg after that.

    While I understand the reasoning...I still think this match should have been done on PPV while still gaining control over the ratings.
    What if, for example. Goldberg had faced off with Scott Hall or Keven Nash and then beaten either of them soundly while gaining a #1 contender spot? Hulk Hogan could have come in at the end, gotten beaten down, and then...Goldberg could have stood over Hogan while holding the title over his head. That would have sent the fans home happy, built things up, and would have popped the rating Bischoff was hoping for.
    Just an idea. I don't think it was an either/or situation
