  • In this video I improve my viscosity technique by applying Akua ink thickening paste to make my ink even more sticky. I am also using a small roller to reapply the lighter ink to achieve more contrast. The cutout plate shows some beautiful embossing which is so unique to printmaking.
    MATERIALS
Intaglio Printmaker Inks: Sepia, Indian Yellow, Madder Lake
    Paper: Snowden 300g
Press: Polymetaal HS-35 Tabletop Etching Press
    Wood glue: Pollyfilla
    Enviroboard
Shellac: Jackson's Art one is awesome!

The most unique printing process in the world is called Viscosity Printing and it was invented by Stanley William Hayter. The first time this new technique was used to print a book, it took three machines six months of continuous operation around-the-clock with ten printers working simultaneously. A dense black ink mixed with oil varnish on silk paper that gives smoothness or viscosity when printed onto other sheets at right angles creates these prints which are also known as "simultaneous colour printing."

I used to be a printmaker and am so grateful to find your videos! I'm tempted to get some cardboard and finally take my copper plates to the scap metal place...keep up the good work... that is a GORGEOUS, luscious print, and you should be very proud.

Thank you Anna, that is so nice to hear. As much as I love etching, collagraph is a bit less toxic and actually more interesting I think. I hope you have a go and come back to your printing passion

That is gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing. I have just started experimenting with the mag mix and golden open acrylics which i just learned can be used together for printmaking. Great way to experiment while waiting for my printing ink colours to arrive.

Oh - you're using magnesium carbonate paste to thicken intaglio oil paint. Sorry, I got confused: I bought a little brown bottle of akua acrylic paint thickening agent and it was enormously expensive and I swore to myself that I'd find a cheaper alternatiive. But as a more economic alternative to the akua mag powder, I just got a box of magnesium carbonate that... boxers and gymnasts use! Recently in a film on lithography I noticed that they said they used... talcum powder!

Hi Marta. Wow! Amazing viscosity print. I love the Akua products, primarily because they are environmentally friendly. Thanks for sharing (-: Marion 😊

Hi Martha, love your videos and learning from you about collagraph and viscosity printing. Thanks so much. This print really works. Fabulous.
You can get magnesium carbonate powder (fine grade) which is the traditional printmakers modifier and easier to mix into ink (I think) than the Akua magmix. And cheaper I'm sure.
    Must admit to roller envy!

Really beautiful print... I'm still looking for the secret ingredient that will make my acrylic paints stickier and thicker. I use so much paint that I can't afford to buy akua agents which is enormously expensive and I'd only waste... next experiment I'm mixing standard gel medium with various amounts of woodglue and talcum powder... Wood glue mixed with acrylic paints directly makes it thicker and heavier and it pools around the edges of the embossing folder. But my experiments continue. I mean, I might eventually find an economic alternative eventually! I also wanted to ask you: the fabric that you feed through the etching press: what is it? It appears white and because it's shiny I can't see it very well because of a problem with my eyes. Everything that is white glows. I just wanted to know if it was cotton, felt, leather or chamois fabric. I want to make something like that for my press which I can mark.

Interesting! It’s a special printing press blanket, but you could use felt as cheaper alternative

In quite a few of my previous videos I show how to shellac the plates. I normally brush over both sides and prefer to use Jackson’s art shellac as it allows for more detail to show through. I use enviroboard as a preferred plate. Thank you for watching 😁

Are you using aqua washable inks, then? I can’t tell, and appreciate knowing products used, esp loved seeing Snowden paper used. Was curious, tho: I heard the reason printers use burnt plate oil ( at least for traditional oil based inks) is because it wont rot cotton rag? Thanks so much for sharing your experiences!

    • @CollagraphPrinting
      @CollagraphPrinting  Рік тому

Hi Kat, I use oil based inks, intaglio printmakers. I am not sure about the rag rot, but I use linseed oil to loosen the ink so that it repels the next layer of link which hasn’t been diluted.
