    My compliments, the way you explain it all. You do this in a very nice way: clear, quietly explained and what is important to me you speak not fast. I live in the Netherlands so English is not my native language. I understand it, I write it, but when it is spoken very fast and with an accent too, it becomes difficult. But you do it PERFECTLY!

    Also I just wanted to let you know that your films have inspire me to start experimenting with combining linocut [oil cloth] printing, intaglio printing and floor lino embossing... In all honesty I'm still trying to find a way to use collagraphs - the only thing that's holding me back is the fact that I have to use a razor blade to incise the paper. But then again I didn't even know what one was until I saw your films, so there's time enough for working that out. I'm so going to your art blog.

    One thing I observed when combining inks with embossing was that the shadows created by the embossing created an incredible variation in tones, but not only because of the amount of ink, but specifically by the shadows created when the the embossed extrudes in or out depending on which side of the paper you look at. It took me awhile to work out how I was creating such variety. Now it seems so obvious I can't understand why I didn't see it straight away.

    Brilliant.... will be hunting for wiping fabrics from my stash. Interested in the full colour version. I've used Lyra colour Water soluble crayons scribbled over the relevant areas, sprayed with water and it worked really well, picking up the blacks from previous runs. Bx

    Really clear explanation of the process. Still thinking about collagraphs. One thing that struck me was that as you customize the inking on the plate, the print that's pulled is fairly unique unless that inking is done the same way on subsequent prints. My experience in printmaking goes way back to my days doing stone lithography, where once an acceptable artist's proof is pulled you can pull subsequent prints without any modification to how the ink is applied - which I imagine can also be done in a more conventional collagraph. I suppose customizing the ink application is just a different process I with different expectations in the final print - but it does seem that it would involve a lot of additional work if the intent is to run an edition of prints. Thanks very much for the video.

    • @bdelpesco
      @bdelpesco  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Bruce, I think controlled wiping on intaglio prints has likely been done for hundreds of years. Once an artist, or a master printmaker has created the optimal print via careful wiping, they'd be inclined to print every intaglio in the edition exactly the same way, because that inking and wiping created the most attractive print. I had a chance to see Anders Zorn's etching plates next to his reference drawing, photos and prints to really scrutinize his process, and his *wiping* was key to the amazing etchings and drypoints he created. Wiping ink is as important to the finished work as the incised line and drawing skills on the matrix. I think beginner printmakers don't understand inking and wiping, and they treat this stage of making a print like they're drying dishes. It's an art, like all the rest of printmaking process. And there's no arguing that its a lot of work. Absolutely. But it's worth attention and care in the process, to see the work through from beginning to final print in the edition. Thanks for your feedback and compliments. Happy printmaking to you. :)

    Where does one buy tarlaton fabric?
    Thank you for explaining while showing the images. Your video is very helpful.

      Hi Kachigh - if you’re using Akua inks, id recommend their particular brand of tarlatan: amzn.to/44PoNNp It can be used over and over, and washed out every few months or so with Dawn Dish soap in a bucket, and then hung to dry outdoors.

    Thank you so much, I really appreciated this, would it be possible to show a video if someone doesn’t has a press?

      Hi Angela - see my details in the description box under the video, or in the first comment I posted here. The video I referred to for making a collagraph print is a hand transferred (no press) option.

      Hi Jocelyne, There are press alternatives that work very effectively for collagraph and drypoint, etc. Are you following the Craft Press Printmaking group on Facebook? facebook.com/groups/1544918272204523

    Hi There! This new printmaking tutorial is a demonstration of how to control Lights and Darks strategically while wiping Inks from a single-color intaglio style mat board collagraph plate. The blog post for this video, with the material list, is here: www.belindadelpesco.com/how-to-ink-a-collagraph-print.html/
    If you're looking for instructions to make a collagraph plate from mat board like this one, look at this tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/hxPDNyMqwdc/v-deo.html
    For best viewing of tutorial videos, hover your cursor and click the tiny gear in the lower right corner of the video window and watch this at the highest resolution (1080p). You can also watch it full screen by clicking the little square to the far right of the gear. (Press the escape key on your keyboard when you're finished to get back to regular size video window.)

    Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. Can anything be used instead of intaglio ink? Slow drying acrylic paints, for example, or oil paints?

    • @bdelpesco
      @bdelpesco  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Jen, You can certainly experiment with slow-drying acrylics and oil paints, but in all of my tests over the years - especially if you are hand-transferring the print (without a press), nothing produces rich darks and compelling mark-making like good quality printmaking ink.
      Give it a go with what you have, and then ask around to see if anyone near you has printmaking ink you can borrow and test. Experimental printmaking adventures are part of what makes this medium so fun. Keep your explorer's hat on, and test different papers, printing on wet vs damp paper, and assorted pigments. Take notes and have fun!

    Thank you so much for this video. I have a question. I have some little spots that appeared all over my plate when I tried to make my collograph. I did add a little bit of mag mix to thicken to the ink. Do you think I added too much and that’s where the spots came from?

    • @bdelpesco
      @bdelpesco  Рік тому

      Hello Kristianne - The spots are on the plate, and not on your prints? Could you email me an image of the spots? Hello At BelindaDelPesco dot com

    So, if you make more than one print from the same plate but finish them with different mediums, how would you number them?
    Would they each be considered a 'one of' or would you call them a series or what?
    Thanks for sharing, I'm enjoying the videos...it's been a long time since I made prints.

      Hi Susan, There are many opinions about how to mark prints with variations. I would mark each print with the title, my signature, the print number, edition size and e.v. for "edition varies". 🙌

    Can you mix ink colours ?

      Hi Agnes, Yes, you can print from the plate much later. It can be used over and over agin.

    Is speedball water-based ink good for this king of printing?

    • @bdelpesco
      @bdelpesco  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Jen, if you mean Speedball relief ink that’s water based, no - it will dry very fast and stick to your plate. Look for *intaglio ink* - from Akua (also a Speedball product), Cranfield Caligo Safewash, Graphic Chemical (doesn’t wash up with water, but you can break it down with vegetable oil, or turpentine), or any printmaking ink designed for intaglio printmaking.

    Respectful question: How is this a collagraph? Definitely intaglio, but I don’t see collagraph.

    • @bdelpesco
      @bdelpesco  3 роки тому

      Hi CBL, Tell me how you think a collagraph is made and printed? Collagraph refers to the plate. Intaglio vs relief refers (in part) to the inking method, and in this case - both were used.
