I'm an artist that loves collagraph printmaking.
Collagraphy is a really versatile printing process in which a textured plate is inked up and put through a press. Different textures hold varying amounts of ink and print different tones. Anything with a low relief texture can be stuck down and used: wallpaper, leaves, fabrics, tapes and threads etc.
The collagraph plate is then varnished and can be printed intaglio or relief. This is our method of creating and printing collagraph plates intaglio.
Intaglio printing is when the image is pressed into the page, the ink fills up all the grooves in your collagraph plate. You can use quite deep grooves but be careful not to make them too thin or they will break!
Relief printing is where you take your collagraph plate to the press and the ink only fills the positive shapes in your collagraph.
I will cover all this and much more in my adventures in collagraphy.

Drypoint on metal plate. Why?
This video is about making drypoint plate on metal rather than plastic plate. Plastic plate has its advantages but metal plate has a very unique advantage in that it can be completely erased and changed if you are not happy with results. You can use a scraper and a burnisher tool to erase any marks you have made and make as many corrections as you like! But be careful about how many proof prints you make, because they will eventually deteriorate your plate.
I will show you how I make the drypoint plate, ink it up and how I will then adjust my design and show you what will the print look like after.

That was inspired! I love how you didn’t give up and ended up with something great. 😍😍

Great inspiring process. Love your results
thank you, glad you enjoyed the video 🤗
Would have loved to see the two prints juxtaposed-nice job!
@@katmcgee9516 thank you 🙏
Wow! Thanks! Until now I thought the less expensive way to go was plexiglass. Now I can see the benefits of metal. What kind of metal to use? I checked Blick’s and it sells copper 18 gauge UNPOLISHED metal plate. Yours appeared to be polished.
@@kstutz230 you can polish them using metal polish 🤗
AI summary says that one of your techniques is Chick-Fil-A!
@@robertb3842 😂 what on earth…
You do make the best videos on printmaking. The best!! Thank you. 😊
@@shaunnalyons4436 aw thank you so much 🤗
Never thought to use label paper before, that's a brilliant timesaver! Thanks for such an informative video, you've given me some new ideas for collagraph texture :)
@@lurking_in_the_jazz_club you are welcome, have fun 🤩 🤗
Great process and lovely result. I can’t wait to try the inked up string. I can see so many ways to play with that even without a press. I love your videos. Thank you for making and sharing them. 😍😊
@@shaunnalyons4436 you are welcome, thank you for watching and enjoy the string 🤗
Great video. Can’t wait to try later this winter. Thank you for all the great videos. 😊
@@shaunnalyons4436 thank you, enjoy the process, you are very welcome 🤗
I like your 🌺creative technic. And I was surprise you look similar to the political scientist Jekaterina Schulmann in Germany.
@@musik-paint thank you. Ha I have a double in Germany 😄
That's wonderful; these look like the "faux mezzotints" - is that the technique you used, or are they a mix of techniques? Also, as we were discussing on the Google meeting last time, I'm really envious of how many printmakers and printmaking collectives and guilds you have there in the UK 🙂. I can imagine how energizing and fun it is to get together with a bunch of other printmaker artists at an exhibition! I did manage to find one in an adjacent town called "Mancos Common Press", but artist membership to use the press it's $360/6 mos, which is more than I can afford. It's an old letterpress, which sounds really neat. I mostly would like to meet other local printmakers and just share artwork and techniques.
@@sonyaj66 that was actually just a straight forward collagraph. It was so nice to catch up with everyone this evening. Hope that at least our meet ups can be be a bit of printmaking community feel for you. Sorry to hear there’s no local groups where you are. Maybe you could start one? 🙌🤗
That’s excellent! 🙌🏻 I had a similar experience after a rough ending to last semester…. My prints got best in show in the student show and then One print sold and the other got chosen to hang in the president’s office this coming semester 😮
Amazing, well done 🤗🙌
Couldn't you use a white wax crayon?
@@susanmarcoux7005 as long as it’s not too soft, so it will rub off. Definitely has a potential
❤ Can't wait either! ❤
You’re a great teacher and artist! I always learn so much from your videos. Thanks!

That is quite an amazing technique! I’m not sure I’d never even wanna try Masotan after seeing that! I love the freedom of your marks and this technique really seems to allow for a lot of freedom!❤
Thank you Laura 🤗🙏❤️
I wonder if a similar process could be done with silk aquatint, using china markers instead of painting the surface. I have some carborundum gel so I'm trying this today. I might try the silk aquatint later. thank you.
@@alopezvn I was actually thinking the same thing myself! Definitely worth a try 🙌
