I'm an artist that loves collagraph printmaking.
Collagraphy is a really versatile printing process in which a textured plate is inked up and put through a press. Different textures hold varying amounts of ink and print different tones. Anything with a low relief texture can be stuck down and used: wallpaper, leaves, fabrics, tapes and threads etc.
The collagraph plate is then varnished and can be printed intaglio or relief. This is our method of creating and printing collagraph plates intaglio.
Intaglio printing is when the image is pressed into the page, the ink fills up all the grooves in your collagraph plate. You can use quite deep grooves but be careful not to make them too thin or they will break!
Relief printing is where you take your collagraph plate to the press and the ink only fills the positive shapes in your collagraph.
I will cover all this and much more in my adventures in collagraphy.

Absolute beginner here…. Why not roll the ink out directly on the duerlar sheet?
@@isabeltipple9942 hi there! Different effect. If you are looking for more faded look, this is a nice way to get it. It essence, it’s just one more way to achieve different tones
Such an exciting technique! Thank you for sharing the process.
@@CherylWolber-ir1yl you are welcome 🤗
Love the print! So clean and has a 3d look!
@@NasserAlhameli thank you 🙏
Amazing!🤩 I haven't made a collagraph since my Uni days (i majored in printmaking) and in fact, I think the only printmaking i have done is, making a stamp and working with a gelli plate. i would love to start a channel showing my gelli plate journey. do you or have you ever done a recording of how to set that up? thank you for all of your recordings in action! I've been binging a bit and I've am inspired to print (and draw - i have been sculpting for many years, not much drawing) again 🙏
@@JT-mq6oc that’s so nice to hear that you feel inspired to get back into printmaking. Printmaking community is full of really enthusiastic people and everyone is always willing to share their ideas, that’s what I love about it! I just film on my phone, having most up to date phone with good storage helps. Enjoy printmaking 🤗🙌
Hi Marta. Great videos. Thanks. In this video you added acrylic paint/ medium over your inked plate. Did it stick? I was wondering if wiping with alcohol before adjusting with acryics might be better.
Hi there! Yes the acrylic stuck to the collagraph plate no problem. White spirit would have quite a different effect as it would lighten the ink. Acrylic paint gives a darker tone
Hi Marta, lovely demo. Do you think it would be necessary to seal the enviro board if you are going to do several prints from it, or would this spoil the dry point effect? When I’ve used it in the past, I find that some cut areas of the board don’t stand up well to repeated rubbing.
@@kaynilsen8405 it’s a good point. If you will want a lot of prints then it’s worth sealing the plate but you might loose some fine marks. It’s a difficult balancing act!
Beautiful work
@@ClaudiaDelRioTorres-gt7rz thank you 🙏
Interesting concept, will give it a go. Thanks.
@@simonedoherty6195 have fun 🙌🤗
I was a printmaking major (yes they had those in the day) in college and I'm curious about this procedure. I studied intaglio. screen printing, lithography and lino/wood cut printing. Thanks for the exception explanation of the process. I will investigate further.
@@MrPhotodoc sounds like you know your printmaking! Litho and wood cutting is something for me still to explore. Have fun 🤩
Hi Marta, thank you for all your wonderful videos - very helpful for a beginner like me. But I'd like to ask about your soldering iron. The link you provide for Amazon is a different wattage and make to the one you're using. Yours is a Master 18 watts and the linked one is a Leader Pro 80 watts. They seem to be very different. Could you advise further please? Many thanks.
@@martinatierney hello there, thank you. I don’t think it matters too much. The higher wattage one will probably heat up quicker?
@@CollagraphPrinting Thanks. You're probably right!
Love all your experiments Martha
@@kimclarke1605 thank you 🤗🥰
Marta, i love what you did the soldering iron. The imagery on those prints are superb. You should do a series of those and have an exhibit. Your friend from Puerto Rico.
@@JoseCruz-ds6ko thank you so much and greeting to you in Puerto Rico 🤗
So cool 😊😊👏🏻👏🏻
What is environment board called in U.S.A? You’re so creative, love it.
@@jariseri5583 thank you 🙏 The Enviromount is simply a cardboard with a glossy finish. So you could use packaging with shiny surface. Hope this helps
Aren't you worried about inhaling burnt plastic? I would think this method poses potential health risks unless you wear protective equipment...
@@jekalambert9412 I am using cardboard so it’s fine in this situation
I was worried about this too, since @CollagraphPrinting did mention there's a thin coating of gloss plastic. But as with anything that releases VOC's and such, do with caution, air quality monitor, ventilation/air purifier and masks, just as you would with general soldiering, paper burning or plastic work. The result is beautiful and can always be an idea for alternatives if safety is a concern.
What a fabulous idea! I’m currently doing dry point on plexiglass with a mini drill… have you tried the soldering tool on plexiglass? I have not gotten enviromount yet but hope to soon. I learn sooooo much from your videos I wish I could use your links but I’m from the US. I notice you this plate is both dry point and then painted like collagraphs are but you don’t shellac… why is that?
@@laurasapko8424 thank you 🙏 Yes you can use it on plexi too, but make sure it’s in well ventilated room, as probably not great to breathe in the fumes. I don’t use shellac as I feel it dampens down some small detail. The plate won’t last as long but you can get surprising amount of prints from it. Hope this helps 🤗
@@CollagraphPrinting yes! Thank you! I wondered exactly that but the “rules” in class say shellac and I really really wondered if I was going to lose more of the texture than was worth a long lasting plate. There’s loss one way or another but I don’t want it to be the texture
Another gorgeous print, Marta. And a soldering iron? Huh, I didn't think to give it a try with etching. I do most of my etching on upscycled Terta Pak cartons and will see if a soldering iron would work with that material. Thank you!
@@apple369 thank you so much 🤗 I have used soldering iron with Tetra Pak, it works really well 👌
@@CollagraphPrinting cool! Thanks. I'm excited to give it a go.
Hi Marta I did send you an email but maybe got the address wrong. My problem is that I follow all the advice of dampening off the paper in order for it to be more flexible to get into the details for intaglio and its by no means wet when I run it through my press but the paper sticks to the plate I have since added another layer of shellac and that has helped but noted that you do not use anything on your plates. What am I doing wrong? Bx
@@bixnash1 hi Bix, I am so sorry I actually thought I replied to you, must’ve got distracted! Soooooo, yes this can happen if you don’t varnish the plate. It happens to me if I don’t wait long enough for the the plate to dry. Also what can help is to polish your plate with a little bit of copper plate or linseed oil before you ink up. Hope it helps 🤗
I’d like to see you ink that one the colours work beautifully ❤
I will post it soon 🤗

I wonder if any of your viewers could help me - when I soak the paper and put it through the press it sticks to my plate and doesn't pull off clean ,, am I putting too much ink on the plate, wetting the paper too much,, any suggestions would be greatfully received thanks so much 🙏🏻
@@lesleyevans1569 hi there! You need to blot dry your paper before you print. Are you doing that?
It really is gorgeous! Bragging allowed I say🤣 Thank you for this …I’m still trying to figure things out in the layering. I’m wondering if you have tried this with a gel plate or if it even would work the same way. I have Akua and caligo available in class but such a hard time getting them to roll out on the plate…they like to lift off. Any suggestions for any of the above? TIA!
@@laurasapko8424 thank you 🙏 The trick with gel plate is to roll out very thinly. If you too much ink on gel plate it will get sticky. Also you can get blending medium to thin out the akua inks, which will take it easier to roll out
