He's a Subaru guru not just a legend 😁 as much much as moog hates to admit it. Essentially Subaru has made the channel what it is 😁 moog secretly loves them too
They were ahead of the curve in global platform manufacture well before this decade where others have followed, though not all 6spds from Subaru are the same, the STi gear has a much shorter throw than a WRX or the std 6spd from any Legacy or other model, so the boys aren’t 100% correct there and it is stronger than the std 6spd, part of why an STI costs more, it’s not just a badge courage like riding the town bike!
@@maverick2242 the main problem with the 5 speed subie transmissions is the case and the small gear size, all the six speed transmissions from this era share the case and gear size, which are much bigger than the 5 speed, so any 6 speed is waaayyy better in almost every way from the era, even the legacy one is as strong as the sti one because the 6 speed legacy trans only came with the ez30 engine from the spec-b versions
Hondas are pretty much the same. Especially late 80s/early 90s. You can kinda take bits from one and put them on another for easy bolt on upgrades. Take Integra suspension bits and put them on a Civic, you'll get good results. I've got a project Honda, first gen Integra. Engine is a D16A3 which has the same bottom end as the EK Civic. Cheap to build a bottom end, but DOHC 16 valve head as opposed to a SOHC 12 valve with VTEC. Throw in the 5th gear from '85 Accord and the factory LSD from a '92 Civic and bam. Hillclimb monster with short gears 1-4 and a tall enough 5th to crack 200km/h. For peanuts. Also VTEC is a fuel economy thing. 80's DOHC stuff revs to the moon and is way more aggressive off the line. I feel like this applies to a lot of cars though. My best mate is a Ford guy and he often gives me information on using stock parts to make crazy stuff. Particularly with Falcons. Like apparently LPG taxi engines from BA Falcons have the same bottom end as the XR6t. So I assume this same thing applies to a lot of other cars.
@@dadi2450 Thats not why 5speed is getting damaged at all. Main reason is subaru just kept reusing 5mt box that was only ever meant for naturally aspirated ej15-ej25 motors. Adding a turbo adds tonanof torque and in veru brutal fashion especially if people go ham with boost instead of keeping it stock. Its already strained to its limit with 320nM of torque from WRX's motor. It is true that other 6 speeds like one in newer wrx and crosstrek/xv/2L Legacies was not based on 6mt of sti but was a rework of very same 5mt again, case is very similar, it was strenghtened a little tho and sadly is cable actuated unlike STi/Spec B 6 speed box and old 5mt.

Just did mine on the miata, a whole new world. And even beyond being damaged, i realize the precedent owner mounted them without knowing you're supposed to tighten them with the suspension compressed. The car went down almost 5cm just from installing them right. Breaks my spine every speed bump now though.
I have to say, I really enjoy seeing what's cool in other countries. Great to watch something other than a Mustang or Camaro being built! Love the channel!
6 speed was the best mod I ever did to my gc8. Took a week or two under the car after work each night, but I eventually got it in by myself and without a hoist. A helping hand and a hoist would have been a dream.
I always found it kind of funny how in Subarus you want the 6 speed to have the strongest gearbox, but in an Evo if you have a 6 speed you're going to have problems. And Evo guys swap in 5 speeds for more reliability
With subies it's the moreso about the shape of the box. Cause the 5 speed is split down the middle into halves it warps slightly under lots of load which causes the gears to shatter being misaligned. 6 speeds are beefy and not split with chunkier gear sets so they can handle more power :)
That’s because the EVO gearbox was not changed or updated, Mitsushittsi decided they could fit another gear in the same box which they did, so actually made it weaker, again these were cars for the street not a serious machine for modding, if you do that you build the car accordingly, every car stock is going to have issues somewhere once you start adding power. Where as the STI gearbox here was developed, I learnt something I didn’t realise the other half of Nazi family VW / Porsche helped develop it.
Love this show. This proves to me, that it makes more sense for standard left hand drive cars. Since auto manufactures don’t mirror the gear box. The gears closest to you are the ones you use most. 1-3. With 4, 5, 6, and reverse are furthest away. But if you drive in a standard car in england/southafrica/australia/new zealand/japan. The gears closest to you are the ones u use least.

I got jammed out of 2rd gear in my Forester XT after I tried shifting at redline while doing helis. The syncromesh gets stuck as the failed shift puts burrs on the edges but it eventually freed it self up and was fine after that.
I hate you guys in the most loving way possible! You guys made this swap look so easy compared to my experience. Took me 3 days to do by myself on jack stands.
I love to see how I have sweat in every single hole in my body whilst you guys are wearing hoodies and beenies... love from the opposite part of the world.
For someone from Northeast United States seeing that long bolt come out so easily from the rear knuckle on a 20+ year old Subaru is jaw-dropping material.
Shes in great condition! Great example you have there and didnt realise the 6 speed swap was such a pain. I know first hand on these 5 speed breaking as my friend went through 2 of them on his 300hp WRX and left us stranded for a day in the countryside XD
Spotted blue smurf blood in the glass box!. GD8 or GCB for the win, I did full 06sti drive line inc arms, hubs, brakes, struts. Tip; get an 02 rear diff cradle, has better rear roll centre. Did it in a weekend in the driveway but that was when I had a back. Good fun Marty now bring it to the skid pan and do some skids!
This is the one upgrade I wish I had done with my 98 RSTi. I loved that car and enjoyed rallying it in Pennsylvania to Vermont in amateur events. Lots of fun for reasonable money
Just finished a 6 speed swap on my 2014. You are right about that feeling in the back of you head, I was constantly worried I was going to grenade the transmission. I also did Driveshaft Shop axles, time for slicks all the way around.
Congratulations Marty! It officially an STI now. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous. I don't really worry about my 5MT breaking because if it does I know what comes next. Perhaps I should start using my Cobb launch control just to expedite the process.
I always enjoy Engine/Transmission internals being crazy colors opposed to just plain silver or blaaaack, nobody but you will ever know that your clutch is purple and it gets hidden but its still a fun added touch.
When your tired of the twindisk rattle get a mantic twinplate! Benny sold me one and after i got one a mate tried it, 3 other mates here in norway also got one! No rattle, easy pedal, rated at 820/1230Nm for the organic disk one. Its as easy to drive as OEM and has held up to x amount of lunches with launchcontrol in my 04 sti swappd wrx. 3.9 0-100km/h
I never broke my 5 speed, but I did shred a chunk of the clutch after a launch. I took the opportunity to also upgrade to the 6 speed MY2004. Ratios were a lot better, but the gearbox was a bit to harsh for everyday use. Great on a track though. I remember doing this pretty much by myself, having watched a ton of videos of clutch changes and gearbox swaps. Nice memories
im ashamed you didnt mention honda when talking about the stud pattern for the 6spd upgrade considering you had a s2000. love the videos boys you guys pushed me over the deep end for my love of cars
Things I learned via my brother (original and continued owner of a 2002 WRX Wagon, first year in US) about WRX 5-speeds: in mid-2002 production, the regular 5-speed got updated with the Type-RA gearbox from earlier special (Type RA) WRXs. The Type RA gearbox has physically longer gears so the gear teeth are longer and have more surface area; they are the largest gears that fit in the 5-speed gearbox casing. It wasn't a huge difference, but those 2002.5+ (you can find the VIN cutoff online) 5-speeds are a bit stronger. Starting in 2003 Subaru added a clutch damper to prevent super-snappy clutch dumps and take some more strain off the driveline. My brother's wagon is one of the late 02s with the stronger 5-speed but the snappier clutch, and I love the clutch feel on it, but even that "stronger" 5-speed feels delicate to the hand.
This is a conversion I really should do on my GC8! It's just crazy expensive for the 6speed box here in Norway. You should do an episode where you change all the old bushings with Superpro bushings! And this car really need JDM taillights!

I got jammed out of 2rd gear in my Forester XT after I tried shifting at redline while doing helis. The syncromesh gets stuck as the failed shift puts burrs on the edges but it eventually freed it self up and was fine after that.
So many good unreleased songs in this episodes!! @moog please release them!
my trabant has got a 3-ish speed manual-ish transmission
@@dominic5824 they can shake enough and shift themselves XD
HTML5 semi-automatic neutral controlled with murphys logic.
pretty sure trabants were 4 speed with 4th speed being a freewheel, so you could coast.
@@hojnikb The only way to pick up speed beyond 100km/h :D
Trabants will always be cooler than any Subaru.
I hate you guys in the most loving way possible! You guys made this swap look so easy compared to my experience. Took me 3 days to do by myself on jack stands.
Marty: "Fourth gear is a little crunchy." *wink*
Those 6 speeds are beastly. I had no problems speed shifting in my '05 STI. Not many manuals have their own internal oil pumps
“To save our backs and health” also Marty * drops steering wheel like a hissing cat
The way Moog lowered the old gear box hurt my back
The most amazing part of this for me was how your rear hub bottom long bolts came out without a fight! Had to chop mine out!
Somebody should let Marty know hes got a reverse light out.
Also front Subaru badge...
and the wrong rear lights...
Saw 2wited on the road the other day nice to still see it around, what a mad car
I love to see how I have sweat in every single hole in my body whilst you guys are wearing hoodies and beenies... love from the opposite part of the world.
Haha and they're in Sydney where it doesn't even get cold ever (saying that from a much colder part of Australia).
For someone from Northeast United States seeing that long bolt come out so easily from the rear knuckle on a 20+ year old Subaru is jaw-dropping material.
Random green frame at 4:54 f20
Edit: OK there's quite a few more
Whoa man! I just replaced the thermal paste on my old chromecast and I tought I killed it 😂👌
Just got a new to me gpu and that frame gave me a mini heart attack.
Subliminal messages 😉
Nice to see Benny back in the shop with you guys.
Good to know that Subaru gearboxes usually don't break except when you use them. 🤣
There's a difference between using, and being a monkey at the wheel.
*abuse
Best video compilations, hosts and MUSIC, always....
Look forward to every post by you guys.
That STi rocks
Who needs to fix a crunchy gear shift when you can swap the whole drivetrain 👌
So happy to see Benny again!
Last time I was this early, Phil Swift had fixed my 5-speed gearbox with Flex Tape.
Datsalottadamage
After that he sawed a boat in half
Great job in a day! Reminded me of years ago when I converted from 4spd to a 5spd from a L-series into an old MY81.
No one:
Video: IRISH SPRING GREEN GREEN
Shes in great condition! Great example you have there and didnt realise the 6 speed swap was such a pain. I know first hand on these 5 speed breaking as my friend went through 2 of them on his 300hp WRX and left us stranded for a day in the countryside XD
😂”they don’t break” continues to swap to a 6 speed because he’s scared it’s going to break 🤦🏽♂️
Then shows 2 seperate clips of him breaking Subaru driveline bits
He also was saying 4th was crunchy on the track day vids
He’s going to add more horspurs, did you not watch the video
Love that you’re doing laps of Pidding rd for a nice bushy backdrop
Spotted blue smurf blood in the glass box!. GD8 or GCB for the win, I did full 06sti drive line inc arms, hubs, brakes, struts. Tip; get an 02 rear diff cradle, has better rear roll centre. Did it in a weekend in the driveway but that was when I had a back. Good fun Marty now bring it to the skid pan and do some skids!
Very cool swap! The car just gets better and better every episode!
Glad to see you with Benny.
Thanks Benny Great Job. STi is becoming a weapon. More mods More Money and then watch us go and see what it takes to break it.
Congratulations Marty! It officially an STI now. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous. I don't really worry about my 5MT breaking because if it does I know what comes next. Perhaps I should start using my Cobb launch control just to expedite the process.
Glad to see Benny still popping in to help out 🤘
Hopefully the seals were done on the Diff, bushings were checked on the suspension, before everything went together. Great show, mates! Cheers!
I always enjoy Engine/Transmission internals being crazy colors opposed to just plain silver or blaaaack, nobody but you will ever know that your clutch is purple and it gets hidden but its still a fun added touch.
Excellent episode, well done, I'm pleased you chose to go all the way with the transmission for the future mods. That is the way to do it.
I want that now on my 2014 WRX hatch. After the pro tune, this is the move
Nice memories
so glad this video was released, I am going to be swapping a 6 speed box into my GC8
So good to see Benny back on this channel
Wow you guys lucked out! Living in the 'Salt Belt' of the US that bad boy rust and seizes in and it sucks getting out. Love the car
Im really impressed by the strength of the plastic, that was wrapped around clutch plate....
Great to see Benny there with you guys.
im ashamed you didnt mention honda when talking about the stud pattern for the 6spd upgrade considering you had a s2000. love the videos boys you guys pushed me over the deep end for my love of cars
Great work boys, love that move back to subies.
Also the nod to Russel Coight handshake for isolation purposes was absolute Gas 🤣
I always think of Russel Coight with those hand shakes. I remember a monkey hand when he met a 'abo' 😂 PC crowd would be all over that now...
This is a conversion I really should do on my GC8! It's just crazy expensive for the 6speed box here in Norway.
You should do an episode where you change all the old bushings with Superpro bushings! And this car really need JDM taillights!
Oooooo look they got Benny from Bennys Custom Works to help them!
He he he great to see Benny back helping the boys.
Good to c Benny back on the show
Return of the shake! Glad to see it making a comeback!
