Sola Melodica exists to uncover a glimmer of God in the art form of music. We focus primarily on hard rock, metal, punk, alternative, and occasionally outlaw country.
    Good News and Bad News
Typically people want the bad news first.
The bad news is that we are all sinners. You are a sinner and I am a sinner. God’s creation was perfect.
Our original ancestors, Adam & Eve, had direct access to God. He visited them and they would hang out together.
God is perfect and He created a perfect people.
Sadly, sin entered this perfect creation through an act of rebellion.
That one act of rebellion threw everything into chaos. Immediately, they were cognizant of their sin. They worked to cover their nakedness and began to pass blame.
A curse entered the earth and now every person born would be born under that sinful curse.
Many people will argue that at least they are not Hitler or Stalin. Most of us are not serial killers! We’re in relatively decent shape, or so we think.
    It’s not that simple, though.
As Steve Taylor wrote in his song Jesus Is For Losers, “They don’t grade here on a curve, we both know what we deserve.”
I am guilty of sin and you are guilty of sin. “What sin?” you ask. Lying, stealing, envy, lust, the list goes on and on. Each of which knocks us off of our “pedestal” of perfection.
If we boil this down to a court session we would be proven guilty. The prosecutor would present indisputable evidence of our misdeeds and transgressions.
Our good works don’t offset our sin.
Plus, there is no statute of limitations on our sin.
Justice demands recompense. The verdict would be swift and the judgment severe.
    The Good News
God had a plan all along. True justice could not ignore these iniquities and transgression. The penalty had to sufficiently cover every sin that was committed in the past and any sin that would be committed in the future.
    Yes, all of them.
As soon as the original sin (thanks Adam & Eve) was committed God put His plan into motion. Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, came to earth sinless and perfect. He lived His life free of sin and transgression. He healed the sick, raised the dead, fed the hungry, and loved fearlessly.
He was the perfect sacrifice for our sin.
A lamb without spot or blemish was sentenced to die a brutal death on our behalf.
Jesus was tortured without mercy. He was mocked, spat upon, cursed, and deserted by His friends.
The beating, according to Isaiah, was so ghastly that He could not be recognized as a human (Isaiah 52:14). He died a horrific death, gasping for air, nailed to a cross.
His death was only one part of the redemption story.
The best part was death could not keep Him. He defeated death and conquered hell.
It’s written, “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Romans 4:25).
The resurrection did not transpire until justification (justice), in the eyes of God, was achieved. The punches, whipping, cursing, crown of thorns, nailing, and betrayal were for you and were for me.
What Jesus endured was more violent and appalling than anything Quentin Tarantino could envision.
The price for our sins has been paid. There is no double jeopardy in the Kingdom of God. Our sin is judged in Christ.
That, my friend, is Good News!
What’s our part to play in this Gospel plan? Not much, actually.
We acknowledge that we’re sinners and in need of a savior. We recognize that we’re incapable of saving ourselves and need a rescuer. We repent of our sin and ask God for forgiveness. Humbly, we accept the atoning sacrifice and redemption that is found only in Jesus Christ. Our lives are now surrendered to Him.
I encourage you to look up Psalm 51 and read it. It’s about a man who committed adultery and then had the husband murdered to cover his sin. His heartfelt and sincere prayer just might be the inspiration you need to form your own prayer to God.
Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved!

Creeping Death is in my top ten favorite songs of all time. What a great tune and this live version is absolutely EPIC. At around the 11:28 mark, I inadvertently referred to Jason as Cliff. It was an honest mistake. My apologies.

This is one of the songs a friend used to turn me on to Metallica...I had started listening to a little of the Black Album, but not much older stuff. He played this song for me, pointing out the biblical references, and I was hook. I am not even the most religious person in the world, but am a believer. The way they portrayed these events was just amazing! They are to this day my hands down favorite band!

Discovered your channel a couple days ago, and I love the concept as much as the content. I'm the music director of my church and someone just beginning my journey in teaching scripture (taking over my church's bible study), who is often in the position of having to defend my love of hard rock and classic metal. I've responded for years by pointing to lyrical content like some of the songs you've reviewed, saying that they sing about death & destruction, often taking on the persona of murderers and demons, but that it's not a glorification of these things; quite the opposite. Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, and the like sing about Satan a lot, but in their songs, he's still the bad guy. Classic metal takes on the role of prophetic warnings and fire & brimstone preaching, and contains some of the strongest, most impassioned defenses of Christianity and the supremacy of God that can be found in music, including even gospel music.
Anyway, a quick note on this video, you mentioned Kirk Hammett having written the main riff when he was 16. That was actually the "Die by my hand" riff. Still, incredible to have written something so timeless and powerful at such a young age.
Keep up the great work. God bless!

The first time I saw them live was in Rochester NY right around this time period. The Black Crows opened and it was right before they hit the radio. I had no idea who they were. They received some rough treatment from the Metallica heavy crowd. Then Warrant was supposed to play but never did. No explanation was given (years later I learned there was problems with their equipment) the crowd grew restless. It was raining so we (the crowd) thought Warrant were just being pussies and various chants decrying them were had. It was hours of standing in a very hot and humid environment and not knowing what the hell was going on.
Then just before dusk Lars popped up behind the drum kit and they went into this...It was my first mosh pit. It was awesome. Aerosmith was the headliner but not too many people cared.

the misunderstanding stigma around metal music never ceases to amaze me. Thank you. I’ve been a metal head as long as I can remember and a huge Metallica fan since around 1985. If the cynical people would
just open their minds and listen to some of the lyrics they would see not all metal is nasty. James hetfield grew up in an extremely religious atmosphere. Most people would only hear the “die by my
Hand” part with absolutely no clue as to what they are talking about. This remains to this day one of their most popular songs and is performed at every concert.

It's hard to believe that even 30 years later, the energy level is off the charts. It was the day that Metallica ruled the U.S.S.R.
Regarding the two F-bombs dropped during the song: one, I think, was in frustration due to the lack of audience participation in that part of the song. Usually during the live performances, James lets the crowd sing the latter half of the chorus. I think he realized there was a bit of a language barrier AND some unfamiliarity with the songs lyrics after there was some "dead air" (my opinion only).
And two: The other F-bomb, to me, was perfectly used and executed at the right point in the song. It just punctuated the emotion of the crowd chanting "Die!".
My wife is not a Metallica fan in the least, so I try and justify the band AND this song by telling her "But it's Christian Rock, honey." She's not buying it......
Give a listen to Leper Messiah and Holier Than Thou.....about hypocrites and false prophets. Sadly, I've known people that are described in those songs. It was easily justified cutting them out of my life. I'm sure you have run across a few of them in your day as well.

I know it's difficult to comprehend God's plan, but why the violence to prove a point when we are told to "love thy neighbor" and all that?
