Remember to choose Disk Utility, select the internal drive, and choose Erase and security options and a number of passes you are willing to deal with.
If you have a nude photo of a celebrity, or any type of digital signing certificate or anything you don't want people to ever see, you need to do the secure erase.

thank you!! did this on my 120gb mac when 98gb of it was “system storage” that you cant really get rid of without paying for a third party cleaning software, or resetting it to factory settings. i was scared it would delete the files that were really important so i put them on an external hard drive
now i have 106gb available so now only 12.6gb is system storage. feeling great!

not necessarily, if from icloud then ofc but not if its from a backup drive. also you can use a bootable installer of the latest mac os (a usb) that way you wouldn't require internet for while resetting/Erasing the computer. I found out how to do this by simply searching how and following the instructions really helpful when updating a few macs at once to the latest OS

This Appleinsider needs to play back his guide to himself.
Only then, will he realise how the whole essay needs re-jigging, as well as slowing down
He needs to use questions at strategic intervals. A question does 2 things: it states a fact, and it gives a reason for the statement simultaneously. Evidently, this guy has never been a lecturer.
A complete waste of his time & mine also.

on the left side of the disk utilities there is a drop down section on the left top of the window called "view" , from the drop down, select "show all devices" instead of preselected "Show only volumes" then under internal click on the highest drive available usually named a random number word sequence then erase that disk. also make sure that the "format" is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and the scheme is GUID Partition Map and give it a name then erase it should work let me know if there are any other problems :)

@Rick Koster whats wrong? because I also went through the process with a lot of things going wrong and eventually i searched up how to make a bootable mac os usb for it and it worked like a charm. try making one and plug it in before turning on the computer than following the steps.

There are several things for Mac speed ups easily
Use the Activity Monitor. If you want to see what apps are using up your system, open the Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.
Turn off visual effects. Most Macs are now capable of running Mac OS X Mavericks.
Keep updating your software (and it set to auto update)
      Clean up your hard drive.
(I read these and why they work from Achak Speed Plan site )
