Because it’s so heavy even with a trailer it’s kicking my butt. So tor RIGHT. if I had a lighter paddle kayak designed to have a motor I’d be in s a better place. Great job asking for what we need.
I love my PDL kayak. I catch so many fish because of it and fish all the time with it. I can go out and fish comfortably for 8-11 hours. When I turn 50 I might step up to a motor kayak but for now my PDL is just fine.
As long as Kayak fishers are prepared to pay through the nose for expensive and often unreliable pedal systems the manufacturers will be happy to provide them.

My Oldtown 120 Pdl is my baby. Now i'm running the Bixpy on the power pole mount, and I'm going to purchase either the Xi3, or the NK 300, for the Oldtown. And I'll plug that with the deck plate. There are still alot of people getting pedal drives - registering a motorized Kayak thru DMV could be a pain - putting a motorized kayak in reverse is not a hands free option (unless voice activated😉, plus us older gents are too old to be paddling all day, so pedal is the best option, just wish they were lighter. 👊🎣👍
It is nice to have options, because not everyone is the same in their fishing. I will never fish in an ocean, will never fish a large body of water and will never need a motor for those things. The problem with motor kayaks is the higher cost and upkeep. Need to keep batteries charged, need to have a way to charge them if you are on the road. Need to be able to replace batteries as they die. Need to register your kayak and pay the yearly costs for that. It would be nice if a kayak could do everything, but you would pay for those features too.
In MN you have to register any kayak longer than 10 feet whether it is paddle, pedal or motorized. It costs the same for each option. I love my SS127 with Xi3 since I can just paddle in shallow weedy areas and use the motor in deeper areas. The pinpoint GPS works so good at holding position no matter how windy it is. Plus, the SS127 is stable enough for me to make my way up to the bow to clear off any weeds I might accidentally go through. Motors are definitely the way to go for me.
As long as there are states like mine (CT) that requires registration for all motorized vessels (including electric) but NOT manual (including pedal), pedal will ALWAYS be the best cheapest, easiest option for a fishing kayak. No it's not completely hands off but it's a lot more hands off than if you have to keep a paddle in your hands. Registering a boat because you put an electric on it isn't just more cost, DMV is a nightmare for many people.
Totally agree. I added the Bixpy K1 motor on my Vibe Shearwater 125. Still have to steer with one hand or use my feet. I need to focus more on using my feet to steer.
Not everyone can afford a pedal or fin set up, I'm even talking about motorized kayaks, I just got myself first kayak with paddle 11.6 I think it's 33 width. I love fishing git a alumacraft super bandit that I'm rebuilding as well. Got it cheap, as well as the kayak got it like 75% off. If it was the original price, most likely, I would not get it. What I'm trying it to say is that it's all about what a person can afford. Good luck to everyone. God bless us all.
I want a pedal kayak where i can rooftop on J bars. I fish 200 to 1500 acres lakes and Lake Erie harbors. Looking at Hobie Lynx, Passport or Pelican Gateway. I don't was splurge on a trailer and tow package or a overpriced small truck. I have access to an older 16ft Sea Nymph with a 9.9 Johnson and a trolling motor if i wanted something with a motor. Kayaks are meant to able to drop in anywhere where regular boats can't. Now we have 12 ft heavy kayaks with 2 motors and electronics thats worth $17,000. 😂. Old Town are pretty nice kayaks. I can easily find them up here in Ohio unlike Jackson, Bonafide or Hobie.
If that's the case you might as well buy a boat. A small flatbottom that can fit in the back of your truck and it would be cheaper than spending 1500 on a kayak built for a trolling motor.
Like think about it for a second, how can a boat be cheaper than a kayak? It cost more to build and maintain, you say you find a $1000 boat, well I can find a $100 kayak
Why don’t they just sell the PDL/motor kayaks without any drive. Then sell the drive separately? That’s what I don’t get. I’m sure they would probably make more money that way.

Why do people want kayaks to become boats so bad?! Me personally, I don’t think pdl are going away if anything they will get more popular as emission laws get stricter.
electric motors dont polute also, a kayak with a motor is still a kayak, also 8 out of 10 kayaks people buy they either have a motor or plan to add a motor. iCast just happened there was zero PDl kayak announced, all the new boats were made with the intention of adding motors .
bixpy is lighter than your drive, adding it to your outback is like taking a sandwich for lunch, i take another 7# spare battery and i will cover more water, fish more than if i didnt have the motor any day
pedal drive was never alive for me, iam disabled and there just isnt much strength in my legs. I kayak to fish, not for exercise!!! My idea kayak would have a nk300 on the back and a xi3 on the front. I want to add... For shallow you can trim a stern mounted motor up to still be able to motor in very shallow water. Mine i can trim up to run the prop half out of the water, which means if the yak isnt dragging bottom i can still motor, some times i can still motor and feel the bottom of the yak bouncing on the limestone. But iam still motoring and making 2+ mph.
The big problem with all this new motorized options is that it is way to expensive for many of us. Aliex you know I'm in the process of getting a trolling motor set up on my Shearwater. I am having to go with a watersnake motor. I would love to get a Bixpy or Newport set up but can not afford either of them. It has taken me almost 6 months to just get the components together. Still need to register it before I can try hitting the water with it. PDL's might be on the way out but will be here for a while. Once Bixpy/Newport starts lowering their prices then you will see the motorization movement boom! I hope Bixpy/Newport is reading these comments!
Aliex, while I respect your experience and opinion on this matter, its very clearly an opinion from someone who does not fish the less conventional Texas to Mexico coastline. The places we fish commonly do not have the depth to run a pedal drive, let alone a motorized rig.. and sometimes it goes on for miles like that. You know how I solved this issue? By owning a kayak that is good at both pedal AND paddle. So no, I do not want to bring the extra weight of a motor system that i wouldn't get to use any more than my PDL drive.
MDLR fishing, check his channel he has been using his motorized autopilot for 3 plus years, he had outbacks and skiff and so one, still using his autopilot.
@@AliexFolgueira I'm familiar with both MDLR and RX Anglers history with Old Town and Hobie. And just like me, they always end up getting the flats stick or paddle out. Unfortunately no drive besides the humandrive gets you through inches of marsh water. 😓
@@TexanTrout also just because i dont fish texas does not mean i dont fish water like texas, here the everglades can get super shallow only thing is drift or push pole, we do it all the time. I have logged sooooooo many hours fishing alll kinds of waters off kayaks, only thing i can't speak on, which i don't is rapid river fishing, everything else i have done.
@@AliexFolgueira it seems in these scenarios where no drive can help you, it can really help to have a kayak with a hull shape that is already good for paddling, which is why I switched to an Outback. I loved my OT PDL120 but it felt like I was dragging myself through the water.
Aliex, You're videos are a big reason why I went from a box store paddle kayak straight to a Nucanoe Unlimited with xi3 and foot steering. It's still not completely hands free as a trolling motor foot pedal is the only way to be hands free completely. There is still something to be said about accessing skinny water with basic light kayaks that don't require a launch and extra set up time.
there is always the need to adjust course and speed or stuff, a kayak with a gps trolling motor and fitted with foot rest control is pretty much as hand free you and i argue thats more hand free than a boat will ever be, until AI is introduce, hey boat, keep this course this way, stop! turn left! anchor! ohh wait nucanoe kinda did that
dudeeee you dont have principles ????? ill give you 5 dollars so you say im the best sponsored guy ever!!! lets fo this! my sponsorship***** in this video is BATTERY everyone needs a battery!!! specially pedal or paddle people. Also you this video may hurt me with some companies that potentially wanna send pedal kayaks over for honest reviews.
yeah, it's funny most sponsored guys bash only certain brands/ products. It's so obvious. Also, guys saying this is dead, that's old. Then a week later pushing and praising the newest more unattainable product the common hobbyist doesn't need or cannot afford. Plenty of guys on UA-cam that actually push people away from things because they believe everything that's being pushed.
@@ericr1382 did you even watch the video bro? i provided reason why they are dead for many and reasons why not. About sponsorship i rather take the paid advice of a seasoned youtuber that knows what they are talking about than a guy who just happened to buy a product and give his super biased opinion on it.
Honestly the cost is getting really high also. This will be my first year not fishing from a kayak. I sold all of mine and went to a paddle board for my minimalist days and a 16’ canoe with a motor for fishing focused days. Pedal kayaks are nice but dropping 3k on a revo that hasn’t changed much in the past 5 years hurts to even look at. Lol
Alex bro! I love your channel! I just got a Old Town Sportsman PDL120 this year. It has been absolutely amazing! I have traveled 13 1/2 miles on my first run and still had energy to spare. I fish here anywhere from 14' feet to 108' feet deep in the salt water where I live in New York. I wouldn't be going so close to shore here, that I have to worry about my PDL hitting the bottom. I truly love that I can get out to my spots where there is deep structures and not have to worry about any battery dying, leaving me stranded out there. Salt water and electronics don't really mix. Having a motor when it is brand new, of course it will work nice out of the box, but are you only using it for 1 year? I bought a Bonafide SS127 right before purchasing the Old Town Sportsman PDL. I was trying to figure out which motor to buy to mount on the bow. After hearing so many horror stories with these motors, it turned me off and made me purchase the PDL Kayak. I still have the Bonafide and may drop a motor on the bow for spot locking purpose only, but as for a dependable kayak, I love the PDL Drive Kayak. I am loving my PDL kayak for the following reasons, no worries about it breaking on me and leaving me stranded. I also don't have to worry about any batteries going dead and leaving me stranded. I also don't have to worry about gas prices or running out of gas. I have faced some serious swells and wakes from the wind and boats and this PDL Kayak went through it all. Yeah it may not be as easy to go really fast, but I am fishing, not racing. I am cruising along with the 10" Garmin, scanning the bottom for fish and structure. I have hit 6mph with the current and wind at my back, when chasing down some blitzes. My Old Town Sportsman PDL 120 is so stable and so enjoyable to use in many conditions out on the water. As for steering, I don't hold the rod with 2 hands trolling, heck I might have a drink in 1 hand or chomping on a sandwich anyways. If my hand does go on the steering knob, it may be for only 1-2 seconds. I bought the rudder bolt from Nick at Navarre Kayak. Works like a charm, my kayak's rudder stays straight as an arrow. With a motor, you still have to press a button to steer it, hence not really hands free either. One great thing about the motor is spot locking, as long as it is working properly and the battery doesn't die on you, but with the PDL, I can always drop the ole anchor. As you can see Alex from my opinion above, PDL drive kayaks are for sure not dead. Keep up the great content and stay safe out there!
Nothing is dead! You’re just trying to make content! We understand that! We understand that an X over 3 kayaks gets clicks. 3 weeks ago and it’s at 3.5k views 👏🏼. Not hating, but in my opinion, your side is anyone who sponsors you. That’s your side. Again I understand content creation. Happy fishing! Good luck to everyone in any kayak they fish. It’s about having fun, with what you can afford
Pedal always win hands free or not the price difference between the two is the price of another pedal kayak once you throw a motor on it you might as well get a boat
with a bixpy in the rear you can pedal faster! like it won't stop you from pedalling, you can pedal as hard as you can, the motor will just add more, and keep you going when you need a zip of water
I think Pedal kayaks will be the norm weather its fin drive or propeller and motor only kayaks will be popular but with expense and hassle of registering they will lag behind in sales. That said I love having 3 modes of propulsion on my kayak for any and all my kayaking desires.
I think the Ocean Kayak Torque was just that, they took an efficient paddling kayak and remade it specifically for use with their electric motor. Was probably the first motorized kayak by a major brand. And while pedal kayaks may be dead... to many, I don't think kayak sales numbers would back that up. I'm guessing paddle kayaks even outsell pedal kayaks easily. But I'm onboard wishing manufacturers would get back to making lighter weight, more efficient designs. Personally, for the last few years I've had kayaks I can paddle, pedal, motor, and/or sail. And while the motor has its strengths, it's also the least used method of propulsion for me by quite a bit.
motor yaks require registration every year. shallow water is why I have a paddle. stiring is a legit point but its just not that big of a deal I still catch fish, most of the time.
Ya I agree fishing license has gotten ridiculous in Texas as well. 42 dollars to tag in Texas on top of that is just greedy overstep. sorry I just don't want a motor on my yak.@@AliexFolgueira
I can't afford a peddle drive kayak, much less one with a motor. And if I'm going to spend the money on a nice kayak with a motor I might as well get a john boat.
@@AliexFolgueira I have a 13' Vibe Sea Ghost. Maybe I'll motorize it, but I don't know how to register it because I got it used and it doesn't have a title. It's probably possible tho.
@comfortablynumb9342 if you can get the boat Id, Vin number, hull id, whatever they call it, you can reach out to Vibe and ask for the certificate of origin, then make your own receipt, say you bought for whatever, with those two documents you should be able to register it.. they will charge taxes on what you paid for the boat, one time state sale tax, plus register fee, here in FL is like $25 registration fee and 27 yearly something like that.
The Ascend 133x is a paddle kayak designed for a motor. But may be the only one, I don't know. That being said, I'm sure it's not efficient to paddle at all.
I hate to admit it, but your arguments make sense! I'm about to take my first fishing trip soon after installing my NK300. I will certainly take my Native Propel drive with me - my intention is to use it for moving around the fishing spot once I make the 2 to 3 mile run to the hole. However, that is 16 or so pounds that I will have to consider the value of. It is insurance for a motor issue and my paddle is insurance on the insurance! But my Slayer has so much room in it when the Propel is removed... I will have to consider the value of keeping it on my trips.
I love my Ole Town sportsman Autopilot for the spt lock, and the foot steering is absolutely awesome. To bad you dont have rivers near you id love to hear your opinion on the best river kayak
Pedal drives are nice compared to paddling. I prefer a motor for fishing. I get plenty of exercise without needing to paddle, lol. Good thing about the Nucanoe Flint is if I ever desire to paddle it paddles like a dream and the EPS removes easily.

pedal drive was never alive for me, iam disabled and there just isnt much strength in my legs.
But iam still motoring and making 2+ mph.
exactly! you can go so shallow with a motor if installed correctly it is incredible!
Agreed! For now, it’s a pedal drive for me. Let’s not forget about those high amp hour lithium batteries…
Best line was “you do that want to exercise, you keep telling yourself you want to” 😂😂
yup it is like that joke "I joined the Gym 6 months ago, so far no progress, I'm heading over there now to see what the problem is"
The Nucanoe Unlimited is a perfect kayak for bow mount or stern drive motors, or both! $1795.00
great kayak!
Makes me feel like I overspent no matter which pedal drive you get.
You did, you gotta embrace them devil motors bro JOIN US, you don't know the power of the dark morth
Aliex,
You're videos are a big reason why I went from a box store paddle kayak straight to a Nucanoe Unlimited with xi3 and foot steering. It's still not completely hands free as a trolling motor foot pedal is the only way to be hands free completely. There is still something to be said about accessing skinny water with basic light kayaks that don't require a launch and extra set up time.
there is always the need to adjust course and speed or stuff, a kayak with a gps trolling motor and fitted with foot rest control is pretty much as hand free you and i argue thats more hand free than a boat will ever be, until AI is introduce, hey boat, keep this course this way, stop! turn left! anchor! ohh wait nucanoe kinda did that
I think you’re funny aliex I’m just fishing my canoe these days but I love my kayak but I’m hurt so trolling
Motor is my only option ✌️❤️😃
I'm happy that you still can get out there
Sponsored guys. LOL. the 99% of us enjoy our paddle/ peddle kayaks. I'm sure if I got compensated, I'd say the same things.
dudeeee you dont have principles ????? ill give you 5 dollars so you say im the best sponsored guy ever!!! lets fo this! my sponsorship***** in this video is BATTERY everyone needs a battery!!! specially pedal or paddle people.
Pedal yaks are dead for many, i see the commenrs all the time. This is a fact, therefore the video is factual.
Pedal always win hands free or not the price difference between the two is the price of another pedal kayak once you throw a motor on it you might as well get a boat
Wrong.
Nope still need the exercise. I’ll motorized my iTrek11 when I am no longer physically able to pedal
with a bixpy in the rear you can pedal faster! like it won't stop you from pedalling, you can pedal as hard as you can, the motor will just add more, and keep you going when you need a zip of water
And while the motor has its strengths, it's also the least used method of propulsion for me by quite a bit.
motor yaks require registration every year. shallow water is why I have a paddle. stiring is a legit point but its just not that big of a deal I still catch fish, most of the time.
motor registration is cheaper than my fishing licenses here in Florida, renew every year
Ya I agree fishing license has gotten ridiculous in Texas as well.
Can get a nice has free motorized fishing kayak for $800
@@AliexFolgueira can you post a link?
@comfortablynumb9342 you build it $450 kayak, $200 12v 30ah amped Outdoors lithium battery, $125 watersnake and some parts
That being said, I'm sure it's not efficient to paddle at all.
that kayak is a great idea, great design on paper, horrible execution, i still like it for the price though
Easy to add electric power to a kayak when you get most of what you need for free. Not as easy for us normal Joe's.
I can be easy, I will do a series it
With the wireless and gps bow motors, pedals are obsolete, this is the reality today.
Obviously for fishing kayaks.
few understand the power of the gps! missing out
Where I am from it takes me 9 months to register a kayak or any boat. Louisiana is great huh.
i would use it and if thry stop me i will tell them FIX YOUR DAMN REGISTRATION PROCESS
It would be cool to see you get the no fishing signs removed by the city!
you know i should! there are a few problems related to kayaks they can fix
Love my PDL120.
But man, I’m excited to go back to paddling when my stealth fisha 555 gets delivered!
So much more speed. And I 99% fish the ocean.
11mph I bet!
@@AliexFolgueira you should see if they’ll send you an all carbon fiber stealth! Would make a killer video!
Still mad at feelfree because they never give us Jonny big brother i would love to see a 12 or 13 feet Jonny
I'm beyond pissed brother
which yak RN is best to motorize n cheap.
I fish so many times with the shearwater 125, I had the bixpy in the rear, I never took the drive! For redundancy I added a second motor
How do you like the nk300? How fast does it go on your yak?
@@AliexFolgueira My top speed was briefly 7.0mph, but generally around 6.8mph. I'm still adjusting the angle and depth for optimal performance.
@@michaell1665 thats on the slayer 13 propel right? that was a super fast boat
@@AliexFolgueira Yes, on the Slayer Propel 13.
I love my Ole Town sportsman Autopilot for the spt lock, and the foot steering is absolutely awesome. To bad you dont have rivers near you id love to hear your opinion on the best river kayak
I hear good things about the bona-fide rvr I did a demo of it ua-cam.com/video/hi240kiQCIs/v-deo.html
Pedal drives are nice compared to paddling.
I prefer a motor for fishing.
I get plenty of exercise without needing to paddle, lol.
Good thing about the Nucanoe Flint is if I ever desire to paddle it paddles like a dream and the EPS removes easily.
Best kayak ever made is the old town mk
It is nice and easy to use !
you get less free voting democrat.
in my state you don't have to register unless its 5hp or more
thats awesome! what State are you in?
