Not trying to sell anyone on this nor am I getting anything out of any sales. I simply want to be able to show you products on the market that have or may have merit in some circumstances. Thank you for your views
This is a great "permanently stowed" piece of equipment in any cabin or even a standard carry along for my truck! I'd carry that around with me no matter where I went, I love fishing and eating fish I catch.
I am really excited you got this, I bought an inflatable canoe but I really wanted this but the price was high. I saw some cheaper foldable kayaks but I figured it wouldn't be worth taking a chance on it until more people review them.
You did pretty darned good, Dave. When I saw that thing unfold, I was like, he will never get that thing back like it was. The guy who invented it can probably put it together in less than 5 minutes. After a few times, I am sure it will get easier. I can't wait to see the christening. I can see me with one of my fiddlely kids, "Hey Dad, what happens when you undo this clip?" Me, "Don't touch that sob...dang boy........now ya done it.....tighten your life jacket and start swimming."
Thanks for showing the video and the fact that you said the pad was a requirement and your concerns with the assembly/disassembly. Looking forward to you actually doing it again on the water
I appreciate your comments about not trying to sell anyone anything! Thanks for showing us this kayak and the assembly / disassembly procedures! I've seen a few foldable boats in my fishing travels and wondered how practical they are. Undoubtedly there are folks who would find these useful. Personally I'm not ready to trade in my Hobie PA12. 😉
As an owner of an Oru kayak, I’d like to add a comment or two. It gets easier to assemble with practice. It’s a great kayak for travel, for carrying solo, for putting into or on top of a car if you aren’t really strong. On the water, it’s easy to paddle and responsive and tracks well. But it’s very susceptible to wind. So you have to keep actively paddling even in comparatively light winds. Like ANY kayak without compartments, you need flotation bags to make it safe for capsize recovery. I have bags that you can fill with supplies if you’re going camping, then inflate with a tube. If I’m just going swimming on a pond, I bring a life jacket, but don’t bother with flotation bags. So it’s a great kayak, if you have limited storage space at home, or in a sedan style car, want to carry a kayak on a larger boat, you are handling the boat solo, etc. it just depends on your needs.
That thing is gigantic, I've been using pack raft for years. A pack raft will deflate and roll up to the size of a paper towel roll. I've had kokopelli and and alpacka rafts that I mount to my bicycle on outdoor trips. They're legit, light, and can withstand rapids. The small size makes them more than easy enough to hike out or carry on a bike whereas this monstrosity will take flight if the wind hits you right.
Thanks for taking the time to do such an honest and real video....long time kayak camper...been interested in this boat for years...solves the apartment stoorage problem for sure...seen them out about in the bay here in So.Cal. and the people I talk to enjoy them but have nver paddle one...I know the company now makes different models and hull designs...was that the beach sport?
I’ve had my ORU bay for about a year and a half now I really enjoy it. It is a small learning process to get to know your particular model, I’ve go the back pack to carry it in as well for packing in to someplace. I’ve used my pack raft more often but still like them both. All the best and thanks for sharing the gear.
I liked your demo. The best part was the putting away part. I watch videos were they go into great detail about setting up their tent and when it is time to leave they collapse it and the end of their video. How do they get it back in the original Sack. I bought a hammock hot tent and could never fold it back into its bag. In. frustration I crammed it into a large stuff sack. so I appreciate the real time putting it away part of your video.
I am still new to my Oru Lake Sport. It does get easier over time. Of course your Beach is more complex but I bet it gets easier. But personally I always take those statements like “set up in 2 minutes” with many pinches of salt. I have the backpack they sell to carry the boat and It’s big enough to hold the paddle and PFD; but you’re not going to have else on your back more because of the bulk of things.
You are professional and polite. My opinion is that that kayak is for one or two uses a year. Other than that buy one you can car top. I'll be interested to see how it paddles and how easy it is to self rescue when you dump over. Meanwhile, I'll stick with my Old Town Pack Angler canoe. It's 12' long, weighs 33#, and is simple and easy to load/unload and get to/in the water. It can be paddled with a double blade and moves around the water easily. I'm afraid the folder lost me about as soon as you started unfolding it and showed how many parts there are to lose. Thanks for the realistic demo!
Everyone complaining about the difficulty of setup… this man did this blind *and* explaining it, quickly. It’s no self-inflating raft, it’s not ideal for many use cases, but if this little effort and brainpower is such a hassle to y’all… idk man you might wanna have whoever carries you through life set it up anyways…
This is great for other options. Build a rig for a dirt bike and access places unseen before Mountain bike with a trailer for extreme remote camping and fishing Most of these comments are daily camping in a city apartment When was the last time you pitched a tent or went hammock camping ?
G’day Dave, it’s been a long time between crocodiles 😊. Have been watching whatever you put out since you were in Darwin and this is another good one. This unit looks like it would be just perfect to transport into wild places on a quad or atv. Not here obviously. Stay well Amigo, cheers Whirly.
Never knew such a thing existed. I’ve seen the plastic ones around here. To be fair while we have two lakes and rivers. I’m not on the water. Pretty cool and th ingenuity is awesome.
It will be interesting to see if those sides are high enough to keep the water out , with some wind . 👍I love my two person , sea kayak , personally . Space for kit , unsinkable , I’ve taken it into stormy waters , big waves , no problem . Those sides look a bit low , and put a big boy inside , we shall see 👍
I was looking at those. My only reason for not buying one was the fact that people I do know that have them say they start to crack on the pressure points where it bends over time.
I live in a port city in Hokkaido, Japan. The river that empties into the sea is very placid. There is also a long and narrow lake with lots of wildfowl on it. As far as a Google Search can tell me, I don't need any kind of license to use a non-powered watercraft like a kayak. This kayak might be just the thing for me. It did advise that Hokkaido waters are very cold so I should wear some kind of wetsuit just in case. A life vest is also recommended although not required. I do worry that the folding seams on that kayak will eventually leak. Maybe it can be fixed with duct tape!
Dave, you definitely need to try a Packraft from Alpacka. You can throw on your pack (rolls up to the size of a paper towel) , holds way more than that kayak, weighs a few pounds overall, and is super durable ;)
Def looked complicated at first but could be the saving grace should shit rolls down hill. We flood probably every 5 year's here. may be worth tying to the window sill for the in-case purposes lol Cool video. Appreciate the real time feel. By the way, Carnivore for maybe 12 day's and down almost 10 lbs myself.) Good stuff. Really good stuff. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, I've been looking at these for a while. However I've got a sheet of corrugated plastic about that size and I'm pretty crafty. That's a hard sell for $1000 plus.
I’ve literally just received mine. Used it once and found the seat post support and coving digs right into my spine, ended up with bad bruising after a few hours. I am not convinced about longevity either and the QC seemed sketchy. It also took an age and several emails to arrive at my home in the U.K. it is easy enough to put together, fairly light, quite compact for what it is BUT it’s still not that portable. I have the bay st. On the water they are VERY light, easily blown, tracking is just ok, stability is just ok. Personally I think they’re way overpriced and cannot help but think that the markup must be criminally high. The Pakamak Bluefin is better but more expensive and heavier. Whereas a paddle board is going to be lighter easier and more robust.
I have two kayaks and the problem is two fold with hard bodied yaks. 1. They are easy to steal when on the roof rack. 2. They catch a lot of the wind so traveling at speed is a no-go, especially if they are lightweight and so not so strong but easy to carry and use. This 'Oru' I can put IN the truck and cover it for security. It's light weight and not too much encumbrance. It would seem it's an idea just waiting for the right tech to make it possible. I reckon if you didn't do this video the way you have Dave, there'd be a few folks cussin' out big time. Thanks for your patience and integrity mate. 💜👍 Universal Sovereign Citizen
You unfold the kayak . The kayak goes in the water ,you go into the kayak Farewell and adieu to you Fair Spanish ladies . No wonder they give you a life jacket.
I just got back from a mountain camping trip and I could see this taking very little room in the truck bed and providing a lot of fishing I am looking forward to the in use footage. Awesome job Dave!!!
I've seen short clips of ppl using this but this video speaks volumes. Can't wait for your on the water vid. Carnivore saved my uncles life!!! Stage 3 cancer - gone! Been over a year, never came back.
How bout an attachment for the front of a John Boat, with 1 or 2 Bicycle wheels. Using the Oars as Handles. Making the Boat into a Wheel Barrow for portage & possibly towing behind a Four Wheeler or Vehicle.
Hello Dave, a good suggestion get a seam ripper and remove that goofy elastic band from your boonie hat, cut it at the seam in the back and melt it. Make it yours add a patch or leave it plan, but you ain't going to put brush in there like the VC hiding from air power. It really cleans it up and gives a better hat that's what my dad told me.
I have an iflatable one. It weights the same but the package is half smaller. It's for two adults and all you need to do is to use pump and 3 lines. It was "new" technology is old but still German engineering. Second hand buy that cost me $9...
It may not be a brilliant observation but, for those who are concerned about how complicated this kayak is, it may be that simply being “portable” does not mean it was intended as a one-person job. After all, since people aren’t supposed to go out into the wilderness alone, anyway, there may have been an assumption that you would at least have someone else in the car to help you put this thing together together, instead of struggling with it by yourself.
I don't know call me old fashioned. I personally like to not read directions. I like to see if i can just figure it out. Most of all i would've taken to the river to put it together. That's how real men do things 😊
Not trying to sell anyone on this nor am I getting anything out of any sales. I simply want to be able to show you products on the market that have or may have merit in some circumstances. Thank you for your views
As a Mexican myself finding out we can produce things as complicated as that make me feel quite proud.
Good job Dave! Very entertaining!
It would have taken me a 6 pack of beer to put that contraption together!
This is a great "permanently stowed" piece of equipment in any cabin or even a standard carry along for my truck! I'd carry that around with me no matter where I went, I love fishing and eating fish I catch.
Best real world how-to video I've seen on the Oru Kayak. Thanks for sharing Dave.
That thing looks like way more trouble than it's worth. I'd much rather just strap a regular kayak to the roof of my rig
I am really excited you got this, I bought an inflatable canoe but I really wanted this but the price was high. I saw some cheaper foldable kayaks but I figured it wouldn't be worth taking a chance on it until more people review them.

Who says an old dog can’t learn a new trick. You go there, Dave.👍
I’d be too tired to go Kayaking after “re-assembling” that thing!
That thing is kinda cool….just missing duct tape and bailing wire. Thanks much, Dave, it was fun putting it together with you!!
Really looking to see how this works out on the water! Thanks for this video, Dave!
I’ll have to pass on that one.
Thanks for showing the video and the fact that you said the pad was a requirement and your concerns with the assembly/disassembly. Looking forward to you actually doing it again on the water

Pretty cool. Way lighter than a traditional kayak and much more packable. If it’s all I had, I’d be glad to have it for sure.

Looks like a nightmare piece of junk. Thanks for reviewing. Glad I saw this.
Not sure about there. Here in AZ, if it utilizes paddles or oars you don't have to register it.
Fold-a-boats are common for remote camps for fly-in fishing. Doesn’t take much motor or oars to move them.
It looks like the kayak almost won lol 😂. Anyway keep up the good work and God bless you and your family and school.
How cool , interesting, thank you

thats a big NOPE from me..
I have one and it is great
Dave! Just looking at your pet cat.. Lol he acts more like a dog! Too funny. Dave, love your channel. Don't stop!

I’ve been casually watching for the land nav but when I saw your tiger today that sealed it: subbed! ( 0:14 )
I was looking at those. My only reason for not buying one was the fact that people I do know that have them say they start to crack on the pressure points where it bends over time.

Great video! I believe the person that invented this sank several times in a cardboard boat. Lol.

It's a great option if space is an issue. Thanks Dave!!!
I’ve always thought these were made for people who owned apartments. People who didn’t have room to store a kayak when it was off their car or truck
Thanks, I've been looking at these for a while. However I've got a sheet of corrugated plastic about that size and I'm pretty crafty. That's a hard sell for $1000 plus.
Those seams look tight and with the light weight it should be easy to maneuver. great portability in remote areas.
I’ve literally just received mine. Used it once and found the seat post support and coving digs right into my spine, ended up with bad bruising after a few hours. Nice, I almost bought this same Kayak, cool to have you review it.
Beautiful design. Sorry for the buy ins / likely
That's Pretty Cool Dave, Kinda Expensive Though, Still A Great Bit Of Kit👍
Can't wait to see the water trials
Dang Dave looks like that kayak is a good workout wrestling that thing back together lol
How many times can it be unfolded folded and refolded before the seams tear.
I have two kayaks and the problem is two fold with hard bodied yaks.

Farewell and adieu to you Fair Spanish ladies . No wonder they give you a life jacket.
I would make a strap addition and make it backpackable. You need to add the PFE and paddle in the folds too. Darn Ohio Laws1
It’s a neat contraption I’ll say.
I think the most important part in that box is the PFD (personal floatation device)!!!!
Thanks Dave
Pretty slick. I would take a roll of 200 MPR tape.
I just got back from a mountain camping trip and I could see this taking very little room in the truck bed and providing a lot of fishing I am looking forward to the in use footage.

That would be a cool piece of kit get to them ilands and littel nooks you always wanted to get to
Thankyou for helping me save my money 😂
I have 2 inflatable paddleboards wow this thing looks way different folding kayak
Generally If it has a motor it gets registered at least in ky.. curious as what Ohio requires
Looks like something James bond would use like Little Nellie, except it won't fly. 😂
I have a sevylor tahiti 3 person inflateable, leave two seats out and then i can pack loads of stuff for multi day expeds.

An Origami boat! ❤
Read the instructions? Where I’m from we read the instructions…
After the second trip to the ER!

Pretty cool, but I don't know how he kept his composer.
I would have been cursing up a storm. 😂
I feel like the sliding hard pieces on the front and back could be a zipper instead of a channel.
Maybe they'll improve on it later?
😮Dave, ty, it’s an option but not for me
The idea is not bad, but I think the inflatable boat is so much easier!
Cats are such smart animals I have 3 of them I love cats
I’m curious after about three years of doing that putting it back together I’m sure it will leak! But holy cow $1200
👍👍👍pozdrav zo Slovenska🇸🇰

Looks like a 12 pack for me on that 😅
Probably a 15 minute job after some practice. I guess if all you have is the family sedan, this is a good space saver.
I was finished with it in my head when you were still getting started
OOOORRRRRIIIIGGGAAMMMIIII !!!!!!!
wrestling a kayakadile. but i like it , maybe create a backpack straps.
Cat adopted: David Canterbury
David, I just want to know how much editing you had to do to get the swear words removed. Lol.
Looks like a fun novelty, but I can get & do a lot more than just a folding kayak for that price.
Dave- the comments are hilarious.
I don't know call me old fashioned. I personally like to not read directions. I like to see if i can just figure it out.
Most of all i would've taken to the river to put it together.
That's how real men do things 😊
