In today's glaze review we are starting a new chapter with a company named Clayscapes.
they were gracious enough to send us a few sample packs of glaze for us to test on the channel as well as give us a discount code just in case we want to get our hands on some of this delicious glaze.
in this video we are testing Clinton's pottery red from clayscapes at cone 6 oxidation. I found the best results when I took a bit of water out and had the specific gravity somewhere around 1.3 to 1.38 .
a big shout out to Clayscapes for sponsoring this video with their glaze. Don't forget to visit their website for more glazes at

We need to get you some kevlar bracers; your poor arm. What ever happened to the dirty potter challenge? Was looking forward to seeing how creative people would get with the textures. Thanks for showing us the Clinton glaze, seems like a good deal for a good glaze. Take care, be well And best wishes on your in person classes.

@@EarthNationCeramics I know, I remember how horrible it looked the last time; why I said you need some bracers. I also know, that when you cook, you get used to burns, but.... damn. Hope that heals quickly.

ClayScapes is awesome! I have known Drew for many years and he is a quality guy. 🥰❤️ ClayScapes is family owned and operated and they have great customer service and support. Also I wanted to mention that they put the recommended specific gravity on the information page for each glaze they make, so that really helps with proper mixing. And they told me that it isn’t necessary to mix the entire 5lbs at once, so if I just want to do a small batch, say to reuse one of those plastic jars you were mentioning, I can just dip out a little bit and mix only that amount and save the rest dry for later. Since my studio space is tiny and I don’t have room for huge buckets, I really like that. It’s definitely much more cost effective than liquid glazes.

I have been using Clayscapes for almost a year now my favorites have been the Costal Blue over texture, and Nebula. The Cream and Pitch black are great liner glazes. Thank you for the shout out at the end and for being our main ceramics teacher this past year please keep it going!!

I received 2 notes of Clayscapes dry glazes today. I had those and one bag of glaze from another glaze manufacturer. Mixing them was SUVH a pleasure compared to of dry glazes from Mayco, Amaco, Coyote, Laguna and more. Some kind of magic they have going on there at Clayscapes. I am a convert...

Without seeing the actual glaze, it is a bit hard to discern the type of this glaze from the video. However, that glaze looks more to me like an artificial reduction copper red than a chrome-tin pink. The unfired glaze also looks more like copper carb. than chrome oxide in color. Chrome-tin pinks usually do not produce the compound colors. Whereas, copper reds (even artificially reduced in an electric kiln) will usually break over texture as seen in your tests. I cannot address ^6, but most copper reds develop best color around ^9. At ^9 on porcelain, I have produced some stunning copper reds artificially reduced in electric firing. A good place to start testing is to take any regular ^9r copper red and add very small amounts (

I can’t begin to count the number of pieces I have glazed with various brands of red glazes. They usually turn some shade of ashy grey with a few red spots. One day I will conquer the elusive red. Great info. Thanks!

These pieces actually look pretty cool! As an Artist myself, I see the glazing portion as experimental because of the different results you get. Nicely done!
I've been to Clayscapes, nice little place they have there.

Thanks for getting us a discount for glaze. I bought 5lbs of Dessert Sand and it came to about $7.00 a pint. By the way, I mix my glaze with a long handled pot washer. (I get all the lumps on the side of the bucket and it doesn't make a lot of bubbles in the glaze.)

I have been told (and I do) let my dry mixed glazes sit for 24 hours after mixing and then remix before use. I think this would have helped the red colorants integrate into the mixture. My $.02

I've been told the same thing but I think that's mainly something I could do with lithium carbonate ( A lot of people do this with shino glazes as well)
I'm not sure how the chemistry works out but .... I've never done it

I was wondering if the specific gravity makes a difference. I heard you say you had 1.24 or so. What if it was 1.45? I bet the red would really come through. Also sorry I haven't watched much lately. I lost my daughter and totally lost my pottery MOJO. Yours is the first full video I have seen in a long time. Also oh my goodness your poor arm! Thank you for posting

I purchased Black Copper from Clayscapes Pottery. Said the same thing you said, " Wow, I don't think I need to sieve it". I got the same "pimples" on my fired pot that you did. As you were saying to sieve or not to sieve I was saying, NO, NO, NO, SIEVE IT!!!! 😂😂😂
(BTW Black Copper, very nice glaze!)

    • @EarthNationCeramics
      @EarthNationCeramics  Рік тому +1

It was either 40 or 60 mesh.
I don't remember but I don't have an 80 mesh that big so it's gatta be one of those two.
I find that anything over 60 mesh is unneeded unless it's a very special glaze.
