How Doom Eternal Forces you into the "Fun Zone"

"Except for blood punch, I have no idea why that's here."
Because it's fucking awesome, that's why.
But seriously, the blood punch is there to A: Be a source of health, since demons drop health if they die to a blood punch, and B: Be a counter to the cyber manncubus and archvile, since their powerups can be destroyed with a blood punch. Everything in Doom Eternal is masterfully crafted to be both fucking awesome and incredibly useful.
@@christianholbrook2686 as well as a guaranteed faulter
@@christianholbrook2686 enemies killed by blood punch only drop health if you have that run active (as I remember, it was a rune). And idk I feel like slowmo while jumping, 2nd chance when you die and agility on the air are just so much better
Blood punch gives more incentive to glory kill. As you become better at the game you find yourself glory killing alot less, because you're already at full health. But when the game throws a bunch of cyber mancubuses at you you'll be jumping and dashing all over the arena looking for a glory kill.

NONONONONO devs care about the games they make it’s just higher ups aren’t shoving fucking insane time stress onto them and manage them like a bunch of morons. Devs ain’t the issue, it’s the fact that in a lot of cases their being used like a child coal miner in the 1800’s
"Why is the blood punch there" "The meele doing no damage is irritating" You've answered your own question
its also about the fun zone and decision making. A constant trickle of weak enemies are there to give you fodder for HP / armor / ammo. for the most part extracting these gains are ammo or cooldown gated so you have to manage these needs carefully. if you had a consistently strong melee, weak enemies would represent an easy and infinite source of HP providing glory kills requiring no set up, ammo expenditure, or cooldown management (also armor too since you could flaming meat hook into melee). So instead melee is weak and the blood punch makes it useful again as both an emergency HP panic button to be used on fodder and as a proactive armor and weakpoint stripping tool to be used on strong enemies, the choice is yours gated by a cooldown and even reduced by excess HP and armor pickups. its both a recue for players in a bind and gravy on top for players that are thriving.

Blood punch is amazing no clue what he is smoking. It destroys weakpoints, blows armor off enemies and just does insane damage. All it takes to recharge are two glory kills. You can farm it by shooting plasma with fodder enemies for glory kill.
I see a lot of people complaining about why blood punch is in the game and that it sucks. And that's coming from the people who don't know how to use it properly because by itself it's not as good but in combination with other things, it's more effective.

I've watched this video so many times but I think the hammer and toolbox analogy you used is a really well thought-out and considered way to think about the design of doom eternal in comparison to other AAA games. It really highlights the strengths of doom eternal and why it's in a whole other league than most other first person shooters.
Doom Eternal is one of the few modern games that I consider "Hope for Videogames." It shows that there are developers who care about one aspect above all else: *Fun.*
And the bloodshed, ah yes
*BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD*
Painkiller instantly comes to mind. Doom Eternal looks and feels like a game
Doom eternal feels like an old halo game on crack (thats a positive) every gun has its use in the toolbox and to master the game you have to use the whole toolbox. The reason that youtube gave me this channel for my tinder right swipe streak is amazing (recommendations finally doing their job)
I never played DOOM 4, or any of the previous titles. I went into Eternal completely blind. Growing up poor, I was never able to play games like Quake or the original series of DOOM titles. I've always been quite inexperienced at shooters, I was never good at Siege or CS or basically any other competitive shooter. So, spending so much of my life playing those games and not being good at them made me feel like... kind of a fraud.
I've always been pretty hard on myself for not being able to make it past low-tier rankings, instead taking the frustration out on myself instead of admitting that my teammates might be an issue.
So, I picked up DOOM Eternal. With no notion of what I was about to play, I bumped up to Nightmare. It was fucking *infuriating.* I have never been so frustrated with a game in my life but for whatever reason I just... couldn't put it down. I struggled and clawed my way to victory in every situation where I was given any kind of resistance. I was forced into a corner, but there was never anything more exciting knowing that I could win if I just did it right.
I had proven myself to myself, and DOOM Eternal will always hold a special place in my heart for making me realize I'm not as dogshit at games as I thought.

they are indeed similar in that regard
Dead cells is fucking amazing
This comment just conviced me to buy Dead Cells.
I find myself saying both things for Eternal. When I finish an area, I'm off thinking, "ok, what do I need to do to these fodder enemies remaining?" but in the heat of an arena, I'm always thinking "Ok, I got ammo for this, health and armor for that, oh, ammo is running low lets find some meatsack and chainsaw him." all the while blasting demons with buckshot and plasma because the game doesn't let me out of the fun zone.
This is exactly why I want Motion Twin to make Dead Cells 2 because I feel like they could take this idea and fucking run with it, and what would really make it even better than the first one is if they went the way of Risk Of Rain 1 and 2, as the first RoR is a 2d side scroller whilst the second one is a 3rd person open world roguelike which I think MT could really do well especially if they were to develop a dead cells sequel, I just thought it'd be a cool idea as it could be a really interesting take on Dead Cells and reform roguelikes in the future as a whole, one of my mates even agreed with me
Come to think of it, DE was pretty frustrating at times, especially toward the later levels and even more so in the dlc's. But that just made me all the more determined to get through it.
As I began to understand how I was supposed to play it became easier to deal with specific enemies, then with combinations of enemies and then tying in some fancy combos.
anger fuels you
Huh... So watching this has helped me better contextualize why I like Dark Souls so much. They're obviously very different games but they both make you make decisions quickly and the wrong one will get you killed just as quickly but in both cases, at least when you look at it objectively, it's not the game's fault.

When I played doom 2016 for the first time I used the super shotgun and the gauss rifle for every encounter ,but when I played the second time to collect all the collectibles I found that the assault rifles rocket upgrade was really useful for stunning hell knight so then i stared to implement that in my play style
So it's like going back to the originals. In the first two doom games, the pistol was for the weaker zombie guys, shotgun for imps, chainsaw for pinkies, minigun for cacodemons, plasma gun for knights/barons, etc. I mean, it could have just been a placebo effect/my imagination but it felt like certain guns were more effective towards certain enemies.
That was absolutly the case. They wouldn't give so many guns if they weren't necessary.

Please note, the Sticky Bomb mod can also:
- Destroy weakpoints, especially on Mancubi and Arachnotrons
- Deal pretty good damage if you unload it on a singular Heavy demon (such as a Hell Knight)
- Deal EVEN MORE damage if you get 5 spot, which allows you to fire 5 grenades before needing to recharge
Sticky Bombs aren't just for killing Cacodemons. Sticky Bombs are good. Period.
Cacodemon duty is just one example of the Sticky Bomb's multitude of uses.

what a frickin legend!
I think one of my favorite examples of Doom Eternal's "there's multiple, but specific solutions for every problem" mentality is the Cyber Mancubus. It's weakness? Blood punch will instantly strip it's armor off and deal massive damage to it. The problem? It does that massive AOE attack if you get too close. So how do you solve that? Well, you can falter it with a concussive blast from a grenade or the remote detonate, you can freeze it with the ice bomb, or, my favorite option, you can just meathook it, blast it with the super shotgun to falter, and immediately punch it, which, if it doesn't kill it outright, will at least put it close to or in a glory kill state instantly. Most enemies and situations in the game follow a very similar philosophy of "There's an optimal option, but it's not the only viable or fun one". Also, Blood Punch is fucking awesome, it deals massive damage, has a large AOE, and is a guaranteed falter on most, if not all enemies.

I really should give this game another shot. I definitely didn't fall into the fun zone very easily. especially because i didn't know the last bar of the chainsaw automatically came back, be it the games failure to tell me or my failure to read. Still played it super conservatively and only used the chainsaw when there was fuel around or if not doing so would mean death, gotta keep that fuel full to kill the tough ones after all. Ever since i learned that the chainsaw would regen that last bit i thought going back to try again would be a good idea, but have yet to get around to it. Great video btw.
If you need some tips and tricks you should check out this guy. He knows the game like the back of his hand.
ua-cam.com/video/6cS9XSGSzgE/v-deo.html
that makes a HUGE difference, if you use a variety of weapons somewhat effectively, and make sure to chainsaw a fodder regularly, you will always have plenty of ammo and dont have to hold back on what weapons you use at all. it only takes 30 sec to recharge 1 fuel. Doom eternal is my fav game of all time but I can't imagine how unfun it must have been playing super conservatively, trying to save the chainsaw like that. you must've had a tough time killing heavies, been always low on ammo, forced to use whatever gun wasnt empty at the time. if you havent gone back, I highly recommend it. You can blast freely without holding back as long as you use ammo from each pool at a somewhat similar rate. If you do that, and use the chainsaw whenever you're getting to about half ammo or below, but before you're completely out of any type, you will always have plenty. you dont have to be anywhere near perfect with your ammo use or when you use the chainsaw either.
I've played the game a ton and now I can just not look at my ammo and chainsaw whenever I feel the time is right or any time i hear the low ammo sound, and not have any ammo problems unless I overuse the ballista.
since you don't have to be a afraid of wasting your chainsaw, you can even use it defensively when surrounded as long as theres a fodder demon nearby. you can do this in emergencies but also strategically, like you can go in with the chaingun shield + a grenade + a bloodpunch to wreck a group, then when your shield goes down chainsaw to a nearby fodder to get out. It can teleport you a surprising distance to your target even without seek & destroy, and makes you invincible for the duration of the animation. it also kills the target obviously, so if youre critical health the target will drop hp and if theyre on fire you will get armor too. Once you view the chainsaw as your reload button + a free guaranteed kill + a tool for mobility and defense the chainsaw stops feeling like an interruption or annoyance and fits perfectly into the flow of combat, and your relatively small ammo pools are more like huge magazines drawing from an infinite pool of ammo.
Blood punch can be a quick reaction to an enemy getting too close by flanking you and such. Besides being strategic against certain enemies too. Pinkies for example always die with one blood punch.
I've been attempting Ultra-Nightmare runs recently. Every single death I have had (save for one due to a bug) resulted in my immediate "Well I was a fucking idiot right there" greeting to the "YOU DIED" screen.

“Angry health packs” god that’s a good line.
Your comment about removing easy enemies actually brings up something I learned about game design when relating to power fantasy:
Easy enemies give you this feeling of momentum. When you tear through ranks of enemies like they're wet paper, you can actually _feel_ that, even when you come up to the tougher enemies that don't die in one hit.
Compare that to a game where every enemy you encounter is as strong (or stronger) than you. Every fight has this "stop." Every enemy slows you down. You don't feel like you're making progress because the hordes of enemies aren't grass against your lawnmower, they're bushes and shrubs that force you to slow down.
If you've ever played a game where you feel like you're just grinding through enemies, that's probably why: there aren't any weak enemies mixed in to give you that feeling of momentum.
This reminds me of elder souls, I enjoy the game enough but all you fight are the bosses and I became pretty uninterested pretty quickly
How do boss rushes work? Are the earlier bosses the weaker easier enemies since you mastered the strategies?
“Thank you for your service or some shit like that.”
Does that get me two drone strikes?
i love how at 18:59 doom slayer's step go with the beat of the song lmfao
before i found doom eternal I was constantly bored when on my pc and now i’m constantly having so much fun playing!
A single playstyle crafted and balanced to perfection OR a multitude of diferent playstyles with good and bad ones? And can you have both?
Funny thing is Doom Eternal has a lot of playstyles even though on paper it looks like the game is built around one.
The sheer amount of enemies and mechanics packed into this game, and the fact that all of them are meaningful, and many can be used simultaneously, results in more diversity of player expression than DOOM 2016 had which was basically "run, jump, shoot, grenades"
The simple addition of blood punch and the way it can be combined with other attacks that do lots of instantaneous damage adds a ton of choices.
And the fact that dashing doesn't interrupt firing weapons, and grenades & flame belch can all be used while firing & even meat hooking. The meat hook is a huge wild card.
@Mugen not just any pyro flame, an *ascended* pyro flame
"when there's 80 different answers and they all work, the question becomes meaningless." never thought of it that way, that definitely is a big factor in the mediocrity in games/how they make you feel they should be played
Having bunch of options is pointless if there isn't a purpose to each of those options.
14:32 it isnt because the longer the icon of sin is on earth the stroner he becomes
When I started Doom Eternal I hated the ammo economy, and it was so bad to the point that I stopped playing the game. Later I tried the game again because my friend asked why I like Doom 2016 so much but didnt play eternal, I picked it up and gave it a longer shot and ended up loving it... The main difference was that I learned that the chainsaws last ammo will recharge over time, before that I was using the chainsaw the way you use potions in an RPG and I would only ever use the chainsaw when I saw an extra bit of fuel on the ground.
My therapist said that I shouldn't be focusing so much on chainsaw's but chainsaw + enemy = pleasure
I'm a huge fan of the original Doom, which I still play it a lot. I haven't played Doom Eternal yet due to other commitments and I will get around to it eventually but I've been worried that I won't enjoy it as much I want to because of my "old ways". I also feel a little intimidated by it. BUT, after watching this, I am convinced that it will be glorious and I cannot wait until my situation changes so that I can finally let the game show me how to have fun. Thank you!
It's a learning curve, that's for sure. If anything, it's sorta the opposite of the original doom. I play Brutal Doom, in particular, all the time. It's great because I can turn my brain off and enjoy the simple music and satisfying combat, so it offers a very different type of fun than Doom Eternal. Doom Eternal requires a lot from you, and is definitely a different type of game, but is definitely a fantastic time.
Don't be afraid to STUDY. If a particular demon is wrecking you, look it up on UA-cam.
have you played it yet? if not you gotta! actually the most fun game ive ever played.
@@furiousfap3369 hi, yeah I have played it and it was pretty good but in the end I still return to the original, mostly for mapping but I still enjoy playing it too.
I love the people at id they're the shining light of how to make an amazing game, a symphony of gears works in harmony to create a masterpiece with the instruments they have.
4:42 Mentioning Far Cry was the best thing you did here. Even I was thinking of the same thing when you brought up the topic of having many possibilities of dealing with the enemy. +1 for showing Far Cry 4 and not just ANY Far Cry.
I picked up doom eternal the other day after seeing a clip of it, i'd never played any doom games before but man, it did not disappoint, the game is just pure fun, I'm someone that can get easily frustrated at games, but doom just makes me have fun, 10/10
If you like Eternal, you should get into the other games. The first two are pretty cheap on steam, and the original Doom has a free shareware version you can try. And Doom 2016 is pretty fun too, if you can get used to the lack of some of the features Eternal has.
@@blutygergaming8789 gzdoom its free and you can use mods xd

I like to come here once in a while to watch probably one of the best reviews I know, about the game that I love so much
Rarely do I find UA-cam videos that are rewatch-able. Yours are definitely one of them.
I might be nitpicking but that blood punch comment got me feeling something. Blood punch is great!!! It one hits Pinkies, destroys cyber Mancubus armour, and does at least 1.5x the damage of a balista shot. By the end of the game, you can pretty much spam it as much as you want with health and armour pickups adding to it plus glory kills being more accessible. It's use promotes good play because you need to be at full hp to utilise it most effectively.
A few more uses: It's a big aoe if enemies are too close for rockets, it's a guaranteed falter which means it wreck's house against Marauders and big targets, it's dope as shit, that one rune gives you hp on blood punch kills which means it can be a solid sustain option.
The big problem with it is that it's quite weak and charges slowly for most the campaign so players get used to having it but not using it. Late game though, it absolutely has it's place in the slayer's arsenal. It is buggy though; I'll give you that.
I've definitely seen its benefits since posting this video and getting lots of feedback. I only ever used it by accident, and as you said, it recharges incredibly slowly in the first part of the game.
But, I have seen the light. I used to get trapped in corners a lot, but using blood punch properly allows me to be a *little* indolent sometimes yet still get away with it.
And I wouldn't say you're "nitpicking". If anything, I did that in the video when I discussed it.
19:07 Doom Guy's footsteps are synchronized with the music. Cool.

Thank you for making this. I am in the exact position that you were during your "first ten hours of DOOM Eternal" frustration period, after having played DOOM (2016). It just doesn't seem like fun, and it feels too unwieldy, but I ALSO had the fatigue, at the end of DOOM (2016).

This video has such high production value and you're actually entertaining to watch, WHY DON'T YOU HAVE MORE SUBSCRIBERS??
Well, I've only been doing this for 6 months and only gotten good at it 3 or so months ago. It takes time, and I'm still working on improving! I'm about to break 1000 subs in the next few days, and am really happy to get to that

@@nika_0 Have fun.
Doom Eternal wasn't fun, and the way it forces you to play it only one way or else you'll lose, wasn't fun, either. I played about 5 hours and haven't played it since. That 5 hours is the only reason I didn't refund it, too.
@@Harvest133 you never found the fun zone

Update: 930+ and climbing, approaching 1k fast
Update: Forget that, just entered the 1k club
I also have that on my Xbox One alone, and played for maybe thousands on a Kindle fire without an account to track it. There was also a phone that I no longer have with its own hundreds and a newer one with 100-200 hours. I have too much time on my hands.
The best part? *It was all on Bedrock Edition*

I think it's telling that, despite everyone having that one Doom Eternal mechanic or weapon that they find useless, it's always a different one.
Blood punch? You don't know why blood punch is there!? Its the workhorse of Doomguys arsenal!
I love this game so much. Just beat the main game and TAG 1 on nightmare, nearly through TAG 2, and it's some of the most fun I've had playing games in years.
Blood punch is very useful. I like faltering enemies and going for a safe blood punch to destroy weak points and do massive damage. Going up to a dread knight with a chaingun shield mod and double blood punch puts it in stagger almost instantly and lets me glory kill for free 2 blood punches.
I can agree about the "It takes you to the fun zone, and doesn't let you out" Because I have over 120 hours on it with just the campaign and DLCS
