In 1995, Disney released "A Goofy Movie" which followed the character Goofy as he embarks on a cross-country road trip with his son, Max. Along the way, they encounter various challenges and adventures, including a run-in with Bigfoot.
This vacation is Max's worst nightmare, and it couldn't have happened at a worse time- his original plan was to escort his dream date Roxanne to her friend Stacey's end-of-year-party to see a Powerline concert in Los Angeles.
The film was a minor box office success and praised for its heartwarming father-son story and catchy soundtrack including the Powerline songs i2i and Stand Out. It also spawned a sequel, "An Extremely Goofy Movie," in 2000. To this day, "A Goofy Movie" remains a beloved classic among Disney fans.
The behind the scenes drama at Disney involving Katzenberg, Eisner and Wells caused some release problems but A Goofy Movie quickly found an audience on it's way to becoming a true Disney classic.

The line where Goofy said “don’t talk to me, I’m probably too stupid to understand” hit me so hard as a kid. What an emotional film.
Protect goofy at all costs!
As someone who said that as a kid before I realize I was on the spectrum, that line tore me up hearing a character I related to as a child just out loud say that. I’m glad more media covers deeper topics for kids these days so they can explore themselves. Only having this line and then Monsters University when I was 13 or so was barely enough.
I think the endurance of the film's popularity comes down to the fact that it might be the most directly relatable film Disney has released.
I agree. I also feel Turning Red is a spiritual successor to A Goofy Movie. Similar themes and plot hooks, while still being it's own thing.
@@marblemunkey hmmm. I guess you could say that about any movie that explores complicated parental relationships and adolescence as well as being a representation of the cultural zeitgeist at the time
@@marblemunkey turning red Was bored
Good take.
Yup, has the classic, as a kid you relate to one, as an adult you relate to another which makes it relatable across generations.
I was listening to "Eye to Eye" and "Stand Out" just today, in fact, all these years later. The dynamic between Max and Goofy resonated with me then, when I was in junior high, as it does now as an adult. These days, I spend a lot of time with my dad since I'm not going to have him forever, you know? This movie also just encapsulates the 90's for me, a decade I hold in high regard.
Never expected such incredible heartbreak from a movie starring a character named Goofy.
When Rob Paulsen was interviewing Jason Marsden on his podcast: Marsden used some dialogue Pete and Goofy said during the hot tub scene to bounce off his own feelings about parenthood; that one of the ultimate goals of fatherhood is to have a child who both loves and respects you. In the movie, Max and PJ regard their fathers with one of these qualities but not the other and that's a major source of friction in the relationships they have with them.
That's honestly a really good and interesting way of seeing it, I like that.
... either way as long as you keep them under your thumb theyll never end up in the gutter.
And let’s not kid ourselves, what Pete sees as “respect” is what others would call “fear”.
@@mikemoss6045 Hopefully.
@@DuskusCB I'd argue it's a mix of both. If a child does not have any sense of fear of being disapproved by his or her parents, then it's hard to build the necessary respect to have a functioning parent-child relationship. That said, Pete in the movie does not have a balanced approach, thus making it more about fear than genuine respect. Goofy on the other hand gets zero respect from Max but is more loved as a result. Neither are really perfect parents, but it's definitely easier to sympathize with Goofy than with Pete, even though Pete does have a point.
In the end Max and Goofy reconcile after talking things out and Max finally sees his father with genuine respect by absorbing the things he was taught during the course of the story. It's why the story works so well. Max actually has to grow by learning to respect his father while Goofy has to work on becoming a more balanced in his parenting.
I'm so jealous of anyone who got to experience this movie in theaters when it came out. I'm 18 and I found this movie in middle school and was obsessed with it for months, I would watch it constantly and had pretty much every song memorized. Still one of my favorite movies today and I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves. I definitely recommend watching the D23 panel, watching Jason and Bill sing on the open road together when they didn't during production was so amazing to see!
im 34 and i was obsessed with this movie in middle school lol, but yes it def deserves all the credit.
Literally same exact thing with me 💀
Best underrated Disney movie, if you couldn't relate to it you weren't human! But side note this movie spoke me as African-American kid who didn't grow up with a two parent home. My mom had been my rock and seeing this movie really made me want to know my father. And find out a way to be closer to him and build that relationship. No matter if you don't see EYE TO EYE with your parents, they want to STAND OUT to better then them.
Well that just hit home!
Stand Out was especially powerful. I'm bi racial, and I always related to being that kid relegated to being on the outside...'till mine is the only face you'll see
I had the pleasure of seeing this cinematic master work in theaters, in the summer of 1995. It was an experience.
Same. Instant classic IMO.
Took my Baby Sister to see it in theaters. I was 16 and just like today I love this film.
Me too. 8 years old then. And I got my parents to buy me a copy when it came out on VHS tape. Me and my brother LOVED to watch it over and over. I thought Pauly Shore's character was the coolest dude ever.
Excellent
Saw it in theaters, too; I was 13 or 14 and it was amazing. Max's Powerline impersonation scene felt so big, visually.
Ooh fun!
Truth: Powerline is one of the BEST fictional stars ever created. His music, his look, the whole thing.
110% Agree
Absolutely! He looked amazing! Space age and snazzy!
Tevin campbell is a real one
Goof Troop was my jam as a kid and A Goofy Movie is iconic to 90's kids!
I had no idea it was a flop! I’m 28 and I’ve always been obsessed and thought everyone else was too😅
One reason why this movie became a huge cult classic is that you completely understood the perspectives of Max and Goofy and take either side. Yet you could also recognize both of them needed to be much better at communicating. It’s also one of the Disney movies that doesn’t have a villain that works. It’s just a great portrayal of a father-son relationship.
This is probably one of my favorite disney movies. The music, and emotional story telling are stellar. The movie still impacts me to this day.
My parents got the movie for me on VHS for my birthday. I was a big fan of Goofy already but somehow had never heard of it until that moment. When I came down with the flu a few weeks later, I decided to watch this movie to pass the time, and it transformed my life. I think I ended up watching that VHS over 200 times before it wore out, and after that I had the entire thing memorized, songs included. I even developed the ability to talk in Goofy's voice, something that I can still do today. It was also helpful in repairing my relationship with my father, who also had a penchant for stuffing the family into a car and taking long road trips.
I had 3 copies of it, because I wore out the first 2
I'm in my Thirties and this film spoke to me as an awkward kid/teen and now as an awkward Father. Coolest thing is my son now loves this movie. Truly timeless.
I love the contrast between goofy and Max’s relationship and pete and pj’s. While max will always be frustrated by goofy’s antics and clumsiness the two of them love each other and will always be close. On the other hand Pete and pj’s relationship is built on Pete bullying and intimidating pj. My guess is as soon as pj graduates college, starts a career and gets married Pete will probably only see him on the holidays at best.
This movie was so good. Possibly the best performance by Bill Farmer to DATE. So much nuance and fantastic relatability that over time you understand BOTH SIDES.
Bill Farmer's performance in this movie is the shining example I always use when I see Hollywood stunt cast in place of an established voice actor for an existing character. People will say, "That voice wouldn't work for a whole movie," to which I just point aggressively at Farmer's legendary performance in this film, full of so much emotion and authenticity. Trust a voice actor to ACT with their VOICE.
Lookin' at you, Mario.
Also: Katzenberg originally wanted Steve Martin as Goofy before going back to Farmer, to remind you how tone-deaf he was.
I was thinking "Scoob!"
How can you replace Matthew Lillard as Shaggy?
Devil's advocate here, does Martinet have the vocal endurance to do an entire movie and possible sequels? Mario isn't exactly a vocal character in his home franchise.
Chris Pratt is acceptable if only because he pisses off degenerates.
@@anionleader you also have to factor in the number of games Mario is in. he may not talk much in one, but you gotta imagine he's either in that booth multiple times a year or in one long marathon recording session. Plus Martinet got through some fairly dense dialogue in Skyrim. I don't doubt he could handle a movie.
@@SSBintern Okay fair but I want to give Pratt a fair shake, if he can nail it then he nails it.
I love that you added the Atlanta blurb to the end of this video. I’m always overly impressed how this channel does its homework on subjects they present. Bravo sir

“Stand Out” & “I2I” are still 🔥🔥🔥
I throughly enjoyed this movie. Bill Farmer is my Goofy, and James Marsden was a great Max. The Possum Land and river sequence were great. And who doesn't like Powerline?
Oh shoot. He was Max?! T.I.L.
@@tenebrousoul9368 Jason Marsden was Max. Different actor.
@@ffreed oh. Darn
@@tenebrousoul9368 Jason Marsden is an accomplished actor in his own right, both on-camera and in voice acting. Look him up; he’s probably been in a lot of shows and movies you’ve seen.
I remember seeing this in theaters in 1995 with my dad and two sisters and thinking powerline was sooo cool. As a young boy around Max's age, the movie resonated with me. What could I do to 'stand out' above the crowd? Loved it then, and still think it's a classic today.
Loved this movie as a kid and even then I could relate to goofy. As a father now it resonates even more! Great movie!
I was 10 when this movie came out. Growing up with adhd (undiagnosed at the time) I was labeled as goofy or weird by my classmates. Trying to escape that stigma is what helped me relate to max, and for a while this was my favorite movie.
I recently rewatched both movies and find myself agreeing with Kevin Lima, that the big reason for the movie gaining the following that it has is because of the emotional heft, that relatability of at some point wanting to disconnect from one's parents but eventually realizing they were just doing their best to do right by you.
I used to watch this move at the start of every summer break for years. As someone who grew up with just my mom, I loved that they showed a single parent family in a positive light without the typical narrative about how terrible it must be. Goofy and Max solved their problems through communication, which my mom also emphasized instead of spanking or other punishments. And the music slaps.
“A Goofy Movie” literally from the first time I watched it, became and still is my favorite Disney movie ever.
I was working in a small theater when this came out. Box Office, concessions, even learned how to run the old platter projectors. The final concert scene was truly impressive on the big screen.
That song was legit summer hit stuff.
I want a third film in this series. Here's how I imagine it... Max has his own child, a daughter the same age as he was in the television series. She thinks her dad is lame, but idolizes her grandfather, to Max's frustration. Meanwhile, an adult PJ is grappling with the reality that he can never quite escape the shadow of his father. Also, we finally learn what happened to Peg and Pistol.
Oh no. Disney would seriously screw up a 3rd film.
I watched this movie a ton of times as a kid when it hit VHS. While I haven't seen it since, likely a good 25 years at this point, I'm not remotely surprised to hear it's held up. I remember even my folks getting a kick out of it.
I so wish Power Line had a real tour! I bought a few of his t-shirts from Target and many people have ran up and asked me does he have a concert coming up! That's some star power right there!
A Powerline tour could totally work with the tech we have today! Just look at the Grammy performance Gorillaz did with Madonna, or any of the Vocaloid concerts.
I still listen to Eye2Eye once in awhile, my favorite part being "Dad, do the perfect cast!" I'm not a dad but my Dad was a fisherman, so I could sort of relate to that.
Also had a crush on Roxanne, and felt the least guilt about that due to her looking very nearly human. A far cry from my crush on Lola Bunny.
This has been one of my favorite movies since 1995, and now that I'm a teacher I always commemorate the last day of school by watching A Goofy Movie. And hosting science slumber parties.
I2I was a "must have" song for our wedding DJ's set list with Stand out added if he could squeeze it. Movie was a massive impact on my teenage years after losing my mother and remembering that my dad was doing his best to connect with me any way he could.
We have to thank Katzenberg for so much of Disney’s critical success in animation during the 90s. He’s also the guy who personally went behind Eisner’s back, and encouraged the development and re-pitching of “Gargoyles” to Eisner with some more depth and mature drama.
There’s a reason Dreamworks went on to have a number of successes, and the reason Disney animation tanked after the in-fighting for recognition between Eisner, Katzenberg, and Roy Disney.
The motel scene has way more emotional weight than anything staring Goofy deserves to. Amazing film.
The movie had heart in a way none of the other disney animated films could.
I watched this out of pure curiosity once long ago. My expectations were not high, but I remember enjoying it a lot more than I expected to. It has heart, unlike a lot of the stuff Disney churns out.
I agree with what he said about people connecting with their fathers through this movie I mean back in the day me and my dad loved this movie. It was our favorite movie and we watched it all the time together back then
I used to watch this movie while sleeping over at a friends house. It was two brothers who didn't have a lot - we'd go to the grocery store and I'd buy everyone a bunch of bags of candy. (The younger brother would also pick out some Circus Peanuts for his dad, to try to help him quit smoking.) We'd stay up late playing Tekken 3 and watching Goofy Movie, as well as other timeless classics like Clerks and blurry channels 98/99.
Flash forward to today, and their dad has since passed, and the older brother recently passed unexpectedly as well. I think a lot about those times lately, and this movie is burned right into the heart of all those memories.
A Goofy Movie was Thomas Washington's finest work!
I remember watching this movie in theaters here in Sweden actually, so I suppose I must have been part of that small limited run- I did like the show, so maybe I pushed for the family to see it... and yet my biggest memory at the time was how scary it was seeing Max grow giant in that dream sequence at the start. VHS rewatches felt like it did more to show me its charms.
Saw it in the theater as well! Doing such a stage impression like Max did to wow the girl(s) was like they animated my own thoughts at the time 😅
And to this day I still use quotes (in my own language)from time to time from this movie!
Best Disney movie ever. Also, that Atlanta episode is amazing.
Those articles in the end are so incredibly self-absorbed and cringe. Good lord, above.
Grew up with Goofy Movie. Absolutely love it! My little sister and I watched that hell out of THAT and Brave Little Toaster. Great work as always guys!
1. A Goofy movie is the greatest Disney movie of all time.
2. You definitely get those lessons about your parents trying as hard as they can when you hit adulthood.
I saw Goofy as an actor who was just playing a different role in a different show.
Got to remember, this was around the time of TailSpin and Duck Tails.
Watched this back in the day with my young son - was stunned at how good the story and voice acting were.
One of my favourite animated movies. I remember seeing this movie back in 1995. Thanks so much for doing a video on it. Keep up the great work guys
I was a teenager when this movie came out. I thought I was to old to watch it but I was wrong. I'm still not to old to watch it.
I even bought the soundtrack.
When I was a child, I loved this movie. It's great for kids for it made me emphasize with my Dad more. Working a thankless job trying his best to give us good experiences that we can take with us for the rest of our lives. It made me feel greatful that I got to do stuff with my dad. I went crabbing with my dad the week before I watched it at my grandmother's, and while it may have been boring but I could tell that my dad didn't have a lot of money, so it was just something for me and my siblings to do. At least the crabs were tasty. So happy my dad is retiring in 2 years.
Recently, my 2 year old randomly discovered this movie on Disney plus, and it's been a reminder that I need to bond with her and do my best for her and her little brother. I'm so thankful my Dad did what he could with what he had. I can't think of any Disney that made me appreciate my family more than this one has, especially recently.
I recently watched the documentary of the dark side of making this film. It's definitely an eye opener but it sure doesn't get rid of how wonderful this was made
Awesome work again, Dan! Almost 30 years later, this is still one of my favorite Disney movies.
Also, thanks to Lindsey Ellis, I always think, "Petty *sshole" when I hear Jeffery Katzenburg's name.
One of my all-time favorite movies as a kid. I used to watch the VHS over and over again.
I remember watching this moving CONSTANTLY as a kid. I also remember it was shown on the local channels every year on Father's Day. xD
Back when Paulie Shore was still a king.
This year (2022), there was a special appearance of Max as Powerline before the parade each night of the special ticketed event, Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World. Max is a rare character that isn't seen in the parks very often, let alone in his Powerline costume, so many people were very excited by this addition.
Holy cow, really?! We were at the Parks during the 2022 Halloween season, but decided not to take our kids to the ticketed event. As big fans of A Goofy Movie, we would have dealt with taking a toddler out after bedtime to see Max as Powerline! That's awesome.
The Goofy movie was my childhood! Despite being a 2000s kid I grew up watching mostly 90s stuff.
One of the most underrated Disney movies of all time! So much memories and feels, sad it's overlooked.
Even though it broadened Goofy as a character, I have more of a fondness for his How-To shorts from the '40's. I guess I lean more toward Tex Avery than Disney.
Another great film that is totally different when watching as a parent vs watching as a kid
I'll never look at this movie the same way again after watching that episode of Atlanta. it was a masterpiece
Amusingly, if viewed through the lense of the usual archtypes and tropes of Disney cartoon movies, in this one Goofy is the Villain... and Max is the Princess.
This movie defined the mid 90's so hard.
I still love this movie to this very day along with its sequel 😊
meanwhile Goofy further evolves into a Japanese RPG character and meeting Final Fantasy characters, he went too infinity and beyond.
One of my favorites as a kid that I can enjoy with my boys!
Great deep dive, Dan. You hit everything from the production and increasing lore about the filmmaking (including the fictional documentary featured in the last season of Atlanta). Bravo!
I literally had this movie memorized as a kid. Seriously I remember laying in bed and replaying it in my head line for line as I fell asleep. I was a weird kid.
The single most quotable movie in my life. I can’t tell you how many times I say “I wish that this was the day after today”. I watched this movie ever year on the last day of school and it is on my list of favorite movies of all time. I also got the board game earlier this year.
Easily one of my favorite Disney movies ever! ❤️
This actually aired in a cinema at a vacation resort I went to in my childhood.
Saw this as a teenager and completely identified with Max wanting to blaze his trail. Now I’m a parent and I completely identify with Goofy just wanting be allowed to watch the ride. This movie was excellent when it was released and is better now.
hands down my favorite movie of absolutely all time. I related to both leads at different times of my life and shared it with my kids. this truly is an underestimated movie and i2i will forever be a banger.
I'll admit that i hadn't seen the movie, but was an avid watcher of Atlanta. The mockumentary episode was fascinating and made me go back to check it out especially once i picked up at the end of the episode of Atlanta.
I still remember watching this movie for the first time on a VHS tape in school when I was in the fourth or fifth grade.
It's amusing how meddlesome executives can get with legacy characters like Goofy. Katzenberg wanting to drop the "goofy" voice would repeat itself decades later when some at the studio wanted to drop the "duck" voice from Donald for the DuckTales reboot. And just as it did with Goofy, it had to go all the way up to the top executive at the company before sanity was restored and Donald Duck was allowed to just be Donald Duck as we all knew and loved him.
I grew up watching this movie in preschool, and watching it as a young adult, I have to say it aged a whole lot better than many people in the 90s expected it to. It helped me relate to both Max and Goofy at the same time. My favorite animated film of all time.
I loved this movie. The music was amazing (I still listen to it occasionally). The ending concert stands out as one of the best endings. The story was so perfect. As a teen I connected with Max. As a father of two boys now, I connect with Goofy.
Yeah, I feel this might be the strongest part of the movie- it ages with you, makes you embarrassed about your past self, and makes you connect with every character at different parts of your life.
This was my favorite childhood movie!! It has my happiest moments connected to it
A Goofy Movie is my favorite Disney movie. Ever since having kids of my own, the struggle Goofy goes through to relate to Max hits harder every year as my kids get older.
Ahh 9 years old again. I watched this tape so many times as a kid
I LOVED this one as a kid. And Roxanne was my first cartoon crush.
I lost count of how many times I watched it on VHS as a kid
That Atlanta episode must be seen to be believed. So many people thought it was real 😂
This is legit one of my favorite movies ever. And this album is top tier
Yep. Definitely saw this movie on home VHS. I live in Canada, I don't even think it was showing here where I live, my town had 1 theatre in it, and only the absolute best movies ever got shown. A classic fun romp through the possibility of music and fun times had with family. I feel this movie even better resembles my life as a teen looking back on it now as an adult. And yes, Powerline was pretty awesome, I remember dancing along to the songs in front of the couch.
We used to have a deal through school to watch a Saturday morning movie through the 2nd run theater. That's where I watched A Goofy Movie and I remember everyone thinking it was incredible.
Huh, it's pretty amazing that this movie came out at all. I'm glad it did as it's one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. Other movies can be good and fun to watch, but this is the movie that connects with people in a way that most other movies can't and it probably helped save some father/son relationships out there too.
My five year old loves this movie. We watch it everyday multiple times a day. We also got shirts for Christmas mine has Goofy on it saying Goofy Dad and his has Max says Goofy Son. I took pictures of us wearing it. But yeah I use to watch it all the time when it first came out. And it's just crazy my five year old watched it all the time I even bought a shirt that has the scene from Goofy sticking through the roof saying Goofiest Dad. But yeah he also carries a stuff Goofy. I even showed the director the pictures and told him on Twitter. He actually replied he seems like a really nice guy.
I waited the whole episode to see if that brilliant Atlanta episode was referenced, and was not disappointed.
This movie ages well because of the perspective shift many of us go through. As a youth, you identify with Max, then grow to understand Goofy and come to appreciate your own parents.
This is easily my favorite Disney animated movie. Has been since 95. I could never put into words why I connected with it compared to others.
I never really thought much of the movie but I know that my black friends loved it. Thank you for giving a simple explanation for why it resonated with them so much. It definitely makes me want to reevaluate it.
I worked at a movie theater in the center of Boston in 1995, and The Goofy Movie just appeared quietly in our smallest house one day with no advertising, no Disney promotional fanfare, no heads-up. Everyone at the theater loved it and re-watched it over and over. We were all mystified that it hadn't been heavily promoted, and now I know why.
The Goofy Movie was one of the few Disney movies I watched back in high school, because the cartoon was set in high school and loved the music!
Great job as always folks! I grew up with shows like Ducktales, Goof Troop and the entire Disney Afternoon lineup. You make this fan extremely proud and ty again.
Ty for letting me suggest topics. I remember you did videos about Batman: TAS and Mask of The Phantasm. Was wondering if I could suggest a video based on Superman: The Animated Series and also one about the phenomenon called Pokemon and how it changed Kids’ WB! I think those would be awesome and ty again. Keep up the awesome work and this video and the James Bond Jr. one are two of my favorites of 2022!
Yes. Everything you said here were my feelings exactly. I connected with Max when I first saw it and now as a father my heart strings are pulled watching Goofy just try to have some fun with his kid even though he finds him a huge loser. I loved this movie from day one and pretty sure I did not see in theaters but rented it when I was probably in middle school (96-98) and that's why I connected with Max's need to be popular and get the girl. Bought the DVD, Own it digitally now and watch it probably once a year. I loved how it basically was a kid's version of Vacation as well right down to the original cover art.
*This is a Dan Galaxy Classic!*
Goofy Movie is absolutely a musical. It has an establishing song, “I want” song, villain song, love song, and closing number. It has everything it needs.
Which one is the "villain song"?
@@jeandutra8303 Open Road
@@mitchschroeder1151 And why would it be the villain song? It's sung by Goofy and Max, neither of which are the villains, they're both protagonists. "A Goofy Movie" doesn't even have a villain per se, the closest thing to an antagonist in the movie is Principal Mazur, and he doesn't have a song.
