Hey Leon....
See if you can get all the Hotel California harmonies. Both verse and solo part.
"Boys are back in Town" is one of the most iconic use of harmonised scales for rock guitar.
Who needs a second guitarist in this day and age.
Yep.
Also, your user name is amazing.
@@LeonTodd 😂😂
Thanks Leon! I just used this tutorial to program the harmony for Your Love by The Outfield...
So is the AxeFX3 the product with the greatest number of Custom scales (ie 32) available?
Very very awesome leon, i want this all harmonized... very very Awesome
Nice to see the Deluxe getting an appearance
Badly needs new strings but otherwise it's a peach!
Keeping it "authentic" Thin Lizzy.
Maybe you could do the dual lead in Boston’s ForePlay/Long Time. ❤️❤️❤️
Hey Leon, I'm revisiting this 6 months later. My goal is to recreate the very ending harmony section the the outro in the song "Sing Me Away" by Night Ranger. I'm very close but one note in the phrase is stumping me. Basically the majority of the outro is diatonic thirds in G major, but at one short segment it changes to G minor. The harmonies for that short segment should be Bb 3 semis down to G and A 4 semis down to F. I was hoping with the custom scale I could force both the Bb and the B natural note to harmonize with a G natural. Everything seems to work except for my B natural note. This is my custom scale setup:
A: -4 semi
A#/Bb: - 3 semi
B: -4 semi
C: -3 semi
C#/Db: -3 semi
D: -3 semi
D#/Eb: -3 semi
When I land on the final B natural note of the phrase, to my ears, it sounds like it's harmonizing down a single semi tone to Bb instead to G like I hoped. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?
Thanks, Leon! Amazing tutorial!
Now I need to dissect the harmony intro to Blackened...
Great effect! What composition you play here?
Y use a tape over gibson logo..... u think u fooling anyone¿
Can you share this preset? PLEASE!!!
this sounds SOOOO good, wonder if a preset like this would work on the fm3 or if it lacks the power for something like this (i mean the custom scale A preset you showed off)
Hi Leon. What's your current live/rehearsal setup? Cheers
My head just exploded. Thanks #headrush
Hi Leon, great video as usual.
This one motivated me and already spend about 3 hours to set a preset for The Trooper with scales. The problem is that everytime the FM3 resets the Mix value to 50%, no matter if i saved the preset...
Great video! Can I do all this on my FM9 as well?
Thank you Leon! Wanting this for awhile! Well done Brother!
Be Well All!
Very welcome :D
Uhhh - I look forward to watching this :)
I've only scratched the surface here but I have so many fun ideas!
That sound at 9 minutes is so cool
Wow another great video
Ssiiiiiiick!!!!! 🤘🏻
Brilliant that mate
Awesome sounds!
Wow! I never thought about custom scales that way. Awesome! Thanks Leon!
It's one of those "why would I need this....OH!!!" features
Hey Leon....I got my FM3 this morning...after a 15 month wait....it was worth every day of it....I am amazed at the sound of this thing...It’s one of those pieces of gear that just blows you away and changes everything....I dialed up the Atomica and a Plexi, and with a couple of tweaks, played for 4 hours straight....Love this thing...
Happy days! Enjoy the ride man :)
I've mentioned before how much I love the Shine outro riff, but I love that chorus riff just as much! Great video Leon. I hadn't idea that custom scale capability existed.
It's such a fun, stompy riff to play. How crazy is this feature too?!
Thank you Leon!
great deep dive Leon! I wonder if Detroit Rock City can be done with custom scales?
I would suspect so. Hrmmmmm....
Wow Leon, that was very cool and interesting. Still haven't gotten an AE3 due to it's high price point, but I didn't know it could be utilized in this fashion. Thank you for sharing this information. Now thinking about finaly getting one. Keep up the good work on your channel!
This will work on the FM3 at half the price as well!
Hey man, do you have a chart somewhere of the funky King's X sounding chord voicings yourre using?
I tabbed it here - www.dropbox.com/s/zs02fhppi1p8xus/SHINE%20GTR%20TAB.pdf?dl=0
Cool stuff man - I am trying to think of a place, where I can use this :)
Wild harmonies for your geometric riffing piece!
@@LeonTodd interesting idea for sure
Another great tutorial as usual. Thanks.
My pleasure!
wow wtf! nice feature thanks for the tips - and at 11:49 my jaw hit the floor
Gorgeous isn't it!
Thanks for reminds me of Thin Lizzy!!! Can we do custom scales on FM-3 ? I supposed to get it next week! :)
Yes indeed!
Amazing and inspirational !
Thanks so much!
This is something I thought was impossible. There are many harmony leads that are not just a certain interval straight through. Now I really want one of these!
Thank you for all the great videos.
DUUUDE! Dude, you could totally delay each harmony to program in "Message In A Bottle" or the chorus of Def Lep's "Photograph"; Coverdale Page's "Whisper A Prayer For The Dying", etc; then move it all over the neck and make a totally new ripoff, er, song. It's beyond auto arpeggiators! :)
My imagination is on fire and I don't have the FM3 yet!
Keyboardists of the world; Guitarists have arrived... To 1980!!!
I love that you used that Coverdale Page doing as a reference - great album!
At this rate guitarists will be making Ableton style EDM tracks in 2089
Leon Todd Amazing album. I spent a whole summer listening to that, Steve Vai‘s sex and religion, and Gary Hoey’s Animal Instinct album!
Hey man. I know this isn't really related to the video but I wanted your advice. I'm shopping around for some monitors for the Axe Fx III and the prices vary wildly. I'm just playing guitar through them so would I be wasting my money if I bought some Adam's A8x's? Or would I be just as happy with some Yamaha hs8's for less than half the price? Thanks.
Is there anywhere close to you where you can take your rig and try out some different monitors?
@@LeonTodd Not with the Covid situation where I'm at. I'll tell you this. I just want the closest thing to, "in room thump" I can get. I've seen KRK 10-3 G4 monitors that look tempting. I think they'll throw the most air given their 10 inch woofers. I know I can get a power amp for my guitar cabs but I really enjoy the Axe Fx's cab simulation and don't want to color it at all with the vintage 30' I have. I just don't want to spend an extra $1000 on accurate speakers for mixing when all I'm doing is playing guitar through them. If that's the case.
Thanks Leon for this amazing tutorial. It answered a lot of questions I had for a long time not answered. Custom scales solved in my sound !
Glad it helped! They're a pretty amazing feature
@@LeonTodd do you have this patch available for download . .. especially the wide big sound scene I love at the end of the video
This is awesome, thank you Leon!!! Maybe a dumb question: using custom scales what happen if you play chords instead of single notes? Can it detect all the notes (polyphonic tracking) and sound well? Have you tried it? At the moment I'm waiting the FM3 so I can't try..
There are some polyphonic modes in the pitch block (virtual capo for example) but the custom scales is best suited for monophonic lines.
@@LeonTodd Thanks Leon!!
Very cool sounds. I think displaying the harmonized note "pitch name" along with it's semitone interval number would make programming custom scales a lot easier. Another option could be to program the interval by its name and direction in relation to the played note, e.g. +m7, -M3, +5, -11, etc. To me, semitones seems to be the most difficult method, particularly on wide intervals. Thanks
Yeah there were a few moments I had where it felt unnecessarily hard. Good wish list item for the forum!
@@LeonTodd I hope someone contacts Fractal with the suggestion. It should be easy to implement, as it is just a small user interface display option. For now, my wish list is that I'll be able to afford an Axe FX III someday. They seem head and shoulders above the rest. Thanks
You've probably answered this somewhere but why is one Gibson logo not covered up and the other is?
The Deluxe is actually my Dad's, he bought it new and it's mint so I dare not sully it. The other is mine so I defaced it as a joke but it stuck.
@@LeonTodd Well there you go. Great scale thingy too. That Axe FX just sounds killer. Your Dad's guitar looks very Gorhamesque.
Very cool! It sounds a lot like my upgraded DHP-55 (Studio 5000).
Digitech did some cool rack stuff. I have a dsp128 kicking around here somewhere
@@LeonTodd Yep, the old Digitech/ IVL stuff is still pretty incredible. I guess when I finally retire all my old Rocktron/Digitech rack gear the AFX will be there to get me through.
It think one of the coolest features is assigning expression pedals to distortion and other things that don’t have that option. I use this feature a lot thx for you videos you have taught me so much. And you have encouraged me to explore
Thanks Leon. Question: I noticed that the Key parameter says A. I take it you don't need to change that parameter to match the actual key your playing in so long as you set the custom scale to change the actual notes you are playing. So, when would you need to change the Key parameter?
There's actually two ways to do this - the way I did it here or on a "global key" basis. The second way means you hands to transpose your song to A, dial in the shifts, then use the key parameter to select the original key.
@@LeonTodd Thanks Leon. Makes sense. I guess the second way sounds good for players that may be playing the same tunes in different keys.
Oh boy! Ideas abound... Thanks Leon! Best, Daniel
Have you messed with sequencing scale changes?
No but now you're giving me ideas!
@@LeonTodd Haha! Funny how that works, yes? Several ways one might want to change scales of the moment, me thinks! Have a good one!
Please tell me the FM3 has this capability! If so can it be assigned to one of the 3 footswitches to activate it when needed? This is exactly what I've been looking for when I play the Thin Lizzy song EMERALD for the harmonized part at 2:05, what I've done in the past was record the second guitar part to a looper pedal. It works but if you're timing or playing is a little off it doesn't sound so good.
Yes indeed! All 32 of them :D note that the FM3 can only run one pitch block at a time though.
This was awesome Leon. Thanks for putting this all together and sharing it with us. The depth of knowledge I've gained on the Axe FX I owe to your vids. And dude, that electric thunder chello thing was amazing.
Thunder cello sounds so metal!
Everytime I see/hear you do something new like this with the Axe Fx III it makes me want this thing even more. But this takes the gold man! Right along with the custom Wah sweep tweaker. Also, I loved the new intro music! Great video
Thanks my man!
At 9:00 that made my jaw drop how good it sounds. This is why the axe fx iii is about what you can’t typically do with an amp or even most amp modelers.
Unique and delightful! You nailed it - it's about pushing into that space of the unheard.
I am still exploring my new FM3. I am absolutely amazed at how much it sounds like my axe FXIII. I know that it has the same architecture, but still... I downloaded and installed your presets and they all sound great. Thanks again for those BTW. Furthermore, that was a very painless procedure. Where I had a slight challenge was setting iup the FM3 to use the Fractal FC. The FM3 manual seems to focus on it’s use as a stand-alone unit, so I had to recall how to set that up. Easy enough though; use FC Controller 1, 2, etc.in setup as opposed to the suggested Expression 1, 2 or other numerous options.
Church out the "OMG9" layouts if you haven't already!
Leon Todd Thanks for the reminder. I will definitely check those out.
That is so cool. I had to listen even though I don't use the axeFx because I'm such a nerd. 😂
Plus, I wanted to tell you on my phone on chrome browsers news feed I get everyday that is customized for me and includes articles for guitars and related, I read an article abojt the best modelers. This guy loved the axeFx, but his top pick was the Helix for it's user interface. He claimed this was the most important factor in determining what modeler to buy. I wanted to scream. No! It's sound and feel, but too each their owm.. He did say the axeFx had some of the best tones along with the kemper. I've been reading really good stuff about the Boss GT1k. Also, for guys wanting an amp that sounds and feels like a tube amp, I am dying to try the blues cube hot, and the nextone amps. The later even allows one to pick the power amp tube types. El84, 6v6, etc and in the app has bias and sag, etc.
Hope you do a review of one of the later amps mentioned someday. Would love to hear what you think..
Anyway. Great video. Custom scales are too cool. I wonder if Helix and kemper have that feature?
Take care my friend.. It's hot as a fox in a fire lately here..
Be safe. Tell the band members and family hello from me..👍💟👍💟👍
To be fair the Helix UI is amazing, but the Axe UI is no slouch either. Up to much for the 4th?
@@LeonTodd Nah. Drinking coffee at my best friends diner / restaurant. John Cougar made a film here you might have seen called " falling from grace" .. Cougar is from my hometowm..
