In the Path of a Huge Falling Rock | Vanlife Turned Perilous
Kevin DePaolo arrived in Bishop, California, after three years on the road, living out of his van. December 5, 2023, DePaolo and his friend met up to go rock hunting in the Inyo Mountains near the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. During the hunt, a rock shifted, and the boulder rolled and crashed into DePaolo, pinning his leg and pelvis under its weight. What was supposed to be a relaxing day of mineral hunting with a friend in the rugged backcountry became a nightmarish fight for survival.

I’m living in Northern Norway, in a small town called Tromsoe. We’ve had our share of avalanches every single winter. Many tourists have gone down in several of those avalanches too, as a lot of the tourist come all the way from all over the world to ski here, or to watch the northern lights. I was a volunteer in a search and rescue group for 13 years, and avalanches are one of the worst things that can happen to you while out in the mountains during 6 months of winter. In the first week of January 2019 , a group of 4 ski tourists were lost in an enormous avalanche on a populare mountain among ski- touristts ,called Blåbærfjellet / Blaabaerfjellet in Troms County. Search and Rescue had to wait for the weather to calm down before going into the mountain where the avalanche happened, because it would be too risky to search for the four missing skiers. The avalanche covered a pretty large area too, and the level of avalanche danger was orange. There was a fifth member of this group of skiers, but he chose to not go with the rest of the group due to both bad weather and the orange level of avalanche danger. It was this guy who reported the 4 other people as missing when they didn’t come back from the mountain. He also went up there to look for them, and could see the avalanche and the ski slopes leading into it, but there were not any traces of anyone leading out of it. . When the weather finally calmed down and both Search and Rescue on snowmobiles and in helicopters could go into the area, it was allready too late. It took several months to recover the four bodies , due to a lot of snow, high winds , more bad weather and the high danger level of new avalanches. The last person was not found until in the beginning of July 2019, and they still had to dig their wat through meters of compact snow to reach him. Only a year after this tragedy, another avalanche took the lives of two young men sking at Sofiatind , in Lyngen, also in Troms County. This is another populare area for both local skiers and ski tourists alike. In 2012 five friends from Switzerland died in an avalanche not far from this mountain, but still inside of the Lyngen range. Skiers are often more willing to take risks, even when they are aware of the levels of danger in the area.

Nothing like a mothers strength. I swear by it. I always had a strong will for children but after growing a humans bones and organs, then birthing them into the world… you gain a different type of strength. Sitting in a car covered over and under in ice and snow sounds like a death sentence. An ice box.

Maybe all visitors to any state park should wear an apple airtag so they can be tracked. Carrying a satellite phone would help too. There's so many people who go missing. There was a young Canadian guy who went missing in Peru, his mother spent over 100K trying to locate him but never did.

I talked to a guy I barely knew who told me he was going to climb Mount Whitney, it inspired me too but I couldn’t summit. Too icy and conditions too dangerous. The man I talked to died 2 weeks later. He was crushed by a rock in the same exact place I was on the e-ledges. 2 people fell to their death the day I tried to climb. Whitney is scary dangerous.

A beautiful story. A changed life because of the selflessness of others. And the gratitude of the rescued, it was a privilege to watch someone become a humbled human being and appreciate being alive. Makes one hopeful that others out there are the same and humanity has a chance to redeem itself. Thank you for another inspiring adventure.
