This fixed my issue! I didn't have the tools to do it myself but I told the mechanic what was wrong and they fixed it. Funny enough, they argued with me and said that isn't the issue...then I picked up the car and the receptionist told me that was indeed the issue. Thank you, sir.
Pro tech here. Just had a 06 in the shop today. Same issue. I was like, wiring issue between box and rear window. Guys waiting and I’m like no way am I going to dig into this today. Decided to do a quick Google search and was led here. Ditto. Thanks for the video. Made my day easier. Your the man. God bless you!
2008 Impala has same problem. Replaced blower motor in same area. Then the rear defrost went out. Checked connector and it had the same problem. I did the same repair. I used a fusable link instead of a wire. Just incase there is other issues the fusable blade link will keep everything cool. Thanks for your help and posting the video. You saved me time. Thats something more valuable than gold.
10 Amp blade type (red color fuse) AC was blowing 10 AMP fuses in the summer due to corroded ground. Under the hood in the fuse box. May have been what caused the rear defrost to go out. Connector to the rear defrost not the best quality IMO. Lots of salt on the road here in the winter. You track it into the car. Then the salt water evaporates. The link to the defrost is only inches away from wet salty feet. The salt gets airborne and collects on everything. I was blowing back passenger side tail light and front driver headlight. Cleaned the whole car with high pressure soap. Sealed up all electrical connections I could find with paint on tape. Yellow can at Walmart in car electrical section. Covered the battery posts with it as well. I have had zero problems this winter. Rear defrost works. No blown lights. No blown fuses. AC runs perfect. FYI in the winter it is smart to run the AC for about 5 minutes every month. Circulates the freon and keeps the seals from dry rotting. Hope this help in keeping your Impala running. Great car. I have 240K on mine and it still pulls strong. Removed the passenger seat. Used it to replace the driver seat that was electric. Had to switch the set belt harnest. Now I use it as a hauling vehicle for just about everything. Once the passenger seat is out you have tons of room. I can put 8 foot 2 X 4 in the car with no problem. Also put a small rack on top of the car. Cut some OSB board for the trunk. Hauling just about everything with it now.@@gphilipc2031
@@gphilipc2031 Yes - 10 amp worked for me. You can bump up the amps if it blows the fusable link. Just use a touchless laser thermometer to get the temp of the wires. Some wires may melt if you have a dead short somewhere else. Wires stayed cool to the touch. No hot spots along what I could see. Laser thermometer can read back in the tight spots. No issues. Its been about a year now. Everything works great! Thanks again.
Thanks for posting this. Went right to the connector, saw the corrosion so I didn't even separate the connector, just cut the wires on both sides and soldered a jumper with heatshrink to cover. Worked like a charm. Thanks again, you have my thumbs up for sure!
My granddaughters 2015 Impala’s rear defroster was not working when she got the car from her mom. I did check relay no issue. Thanks to your video you saved me much valuable time. Might have spent a long time searching for wiring harness. On passenger side sill. It was exactly as you described. Black and purple burned through. Did like you said. Works like a charm. Thank you for your video. At 78 I’m glad I could fix it for her. WITH YOUR HELP. APPRECIATE ALL YOU HELP.
The wire toasting like that was the exact same issue my car had. Just fixed it! Thanks for taking the time to look at the circuit diagrams and create this video.
Thanks Tom. Bang on. You saved me a boat load of time with this video. I watched it before starting any diagnostics. Being a heavy truck mechanic it made perfect sense to me. I did the basic diagnostics and went directly to plug. 10 min diagnostic and half hour repair.
Thank you! 2022 and you’re still helping just fixed my 2009. You didn’t save me half the time you saved me days of frustration. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thanks a lot. I have a 2013 impala that had the same exact issue. Saved a ton of time watching this. I was told by a mechanic that it would need completely traced looking for a broken wire. But your vid took me straight to the problem. Thanks
Thank you sir! 2010 impala and I just found out it wasn’t working and boom, first thing I checked was this and yup. Burnt out entirely! You just saved me so much time!
Thank you! You explained it perfectly, and that was the identical problem with my 2006 Impala. Crazy that GM hadn't figured out this problem. Your video was very helpful. Thanks for your work.
Great video! I recently bought a used 2013 Impala & it had this exact same issue. Took less than 30 minutes to solder a bypass wire. Fixed the problem. Thank you!
Just another THANK YOU for this video! Defroster wasn't working on my 08 Impala and my mechanic didn't even look for the problem (or do a quick Google like I did to find this). Told me I would have to replace the whole windshield. 🙄 But now I've fixed it for the cost of a sodering kit and wire that I already had laying around, just hadn't had a reason to use yet. Fixed it right up and now my defroster works perfectly! Thank you!!
My 2010 imp. Chev. On December 6, 2019 defrost failed for second day. I followed your video very closely. Identical to my car of course. Parking lot temperature about 30f. Used wire nuts tape available wire same size. Will test tomorrow morning. Big thank you. This old sailor is 77. You rock.
My defog wasn't working. Your video was the first thing that showed up when I googled it and I found the exact same problem!! Thank you! Such a game changer compared to tracing electrical wires around.
Just bought a 2008 Impala couple weeks ago and noticed the rear defrost not working.I watched your video and it led me right to the problem. Same exact thing was wrong with mine. Great video, thanks!
2010 Chevy Impala. Just as Soon as I watched this video I went (ran) out to my car!! I pulled it all apart and looked at this connector. There it was!!! Burned and corroded just as yours was. i didnt even take the connector apart, just cut at both ends and one soldered jumper wire later my rear defroster is working again!!!!!!! Thanks soooooo much!!! Its been broken for 6 months now. I checked my fuses and relay and those were not the problem. My orange indicator light would come on. But no defrost... Now its January and cold, and I have a working rear defroster again!!!!
Subscribed because of this video! My 2006 Impala had occasional connection 2 years ago so when it quit entirely I thought it was just done and gone! It’s 0°F out today but soon as it warms up I’m having a look! Great video!
Thanks for the troubleshooting help. I clicked the relay, inspected the harness which black wire looked a little green, small burn mark similar to yours, but oddly had 12v at the window. Thought I had just a broken filament so started continuity testing there which found nothing. Went back and found my 12v was now gone. Decided to go back and jumper the harness to see if that was it, found the connector pretty charred. Soldered up the jumper, retested, got my 12v back and then wires started getting warm! Woohoo! Less than an hour. Thanks for your help!
Great video Brotha!!!! Been dealing with this issue for weeks!! But Thanks to you, saved cash on diagnostic fee and shop repair, for a ten minute repair!! Thank you so much!! People like you on UA-cam really make a huge difference!!

Cut and jumpered the wire and PRESTO - now I have the 12 vdc at the rear window. Thanks, much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for posting this video!!! It saved me hours of hunting for the problem as I don't have a schematic. I went online looking for a wiring diagram and found your video. Mine was an 2007 impala, Purple and Black wire.
This is a great video. Everything wrong on my 09 Impala was just as in the video, that plug was badly burned. Cut the wires from the plug, spliced them back together and now all is well once again. THANK YOU!

Thanks for the easy steps video. Fixed my 09' impala today. I used crimp connectors instead of solder and the extension wire i think is 14 gauge but i turned it on and ran it for 10-15 minutes and the wire stays nice and cool. I was searching for a 10-12 gauge in the garage but could not find one
Thanks alot for sharing this video.. My 2009 Impala had the EXACT same problem w/ the exact same burn mark. Cut both wires and attached a wire with a 30 amp fuse for extra protection. Thanks again!!
Great video! Thanks for doing the leg work & posting. Fixed just in time! It started snowing this evening so, I went out after snow covered the rear window, turned on the rear defroster and it worked great!
Sorry if this is a stupid question lol, what type of wire do I need for the extension? I've never really done anything involving wiring before (just gonna use crimp connectors instead of soldering), seems easy enough but I just don't know what type of wire I need to buy for it. When I checked home depot there were just so many options lol. Don't wanna get the wrong thing
thank you so much your video was great and exactly what our problem was , took us a bit longer than you but it works!! Keep up sharing such great info and videos!!
great explanation , i have a similar problem but the rear defroster button is causing intermittent heat loss thru vents. My best guess before i go more indepth is that its some short thats also causing a the main blend door actuator to fail. Have any better guess on what it could be. As this car had a water problem on the rear passenger side next to the blower motor a while back there for its highly possible its some messed up electrical thing due to water. It occurs when i push the rear defrost button also drains battery to.
Great video my 2009 Impala just did the same thing the other day. I am glad I can fix it myself thanks to people like yourself on UA-cam.
I'm glad you found it useful! Thanks for watching!

That’s way above my skill level. I got a friend who is good at cars.
when you said "Im getting excited" i was also excited to see how easy gm made it to do ahah :/ must be common on 2006-08 impala's
Had exactly the same problem on my 2010 Impala. Thanks for the advice!!!
Thanks for watching! Hopefully yours was also a simple repair job!
2011 Impala and my rear defrost isn't working either. Gonna use this video as a reference and check it out soon. Thank you!

Great help for me to fix my son's car! Thanks...
I fixed mine today on 11/2/2018 and used a in line fuse connector with a 25 amp spade type fuse. It is a 10 gauge wire.
mobes329 how’s it holding up? 25amp fuse suffice? Or needed to up to a 30amp? Thanks
Thanks for the video saved me hundreds that the dealer would have charged me!!

thank you so much your video was great and exactly what our problem was , took us a bit longer than you but it works!! Keep up sharing such great info and videos!!
That’s great! Thanks for watching and be sure to check out my other videos on fixing Impalas. 😁
exactly what i needed!!! ty so much for your time and effort
Glad the video helped ya. Thanks for watching!
great explanation , i have a similar problem but the rear defroster button is causing intermittent heat loss thru vents. My best guess before i go more indepth is that its some short thats also causing a the main blend door actuator to fail. Have any better guess on what it could be. As this car had a water problem on the rear passenger side next to the blower motor a while back there for its highly possible its some messed up electrical thing due to water. It occurs when i push the rear defrost button also drains battery to.
you were so right my 0 9 impala has the same thing bad wire thanks a bunch
That’s great! I’m glad the video helped you!
