Lyrics:
Broke into the old apartment
This is where we used to live
Broken glass, broke and hungry
Broken hearts and broken bones
This is where we used to live
Why did you paint the walls?
Why did you clean the floor?
Why did you plaster over the hole I punched in the door?
This is where we used to live
Why did you keep the mousetrap?
Why did you keep the dish rack?
These things used to be mine
I guess they still are, I want them back
Broke into the old apartment
Forty-two steps from the street
Crooked landing, crooked landlord
Narrow laneway filled with crooks
This is where we used to live
Why did they pave the lawn?
Why did they change the locks?
Why did I have to break in, I only came here to talk
This is where we used to live
How is the neighbour downstairs?
How is her temper this year?
I turned up your TV and stomped on the floor just for fun
I know we don't live here anymore
We bought an old house on the Danforth
She loves me and her body keeps me warm
I'm happy there
But this is where we used to live
Broke into the old apartment
Tore the phone out of the wall
Only memories, fading memories
Blending into dull tableaux
I want them back
Almost none of us have Broke into the Old Apartment, but I bet so many of us would love to. Something about that idea just reaches into my soul.
I'm moving out of the apartment I lived in for six years when starting a new life/career for myself in Vermont and feeling so nostalgic/sad about it. This comment is perfect
@@cammackey8259 Thanks. You get what I'm talking about. Brilliant minds thinking alike.
No need to be moronic, it's obviously the nostalgia of the past and simpler times.
@@jestice75 Yep doing it would be moronic, but if I could do it without consequences I would.
Back in the days when the Barenaked Ladies were a great band!
Many, many years ago. I had a friend ask if I would go see a band called "Barenaked ladies" with her. Being a life long metal head I had never heard of them, or any of their songs. Pre-show I couldn't believe the energy in the building. When the lights went down the place erupted, as much excitement as I had ever seen. Being used to the bombast of Heavy Metal shows I had my expectations set very low. These guys were nothing short of amazing. Left there a life long fan of their music.
im a canadian metalhead. but i always have time for barenaked ladies. its smart, its extremely well played. and its fun. sometimes i need a break from the heavy
They're frickin' awesome.
Long live all music!!🤘🤘
I salute you.
It's good to expand your musical enjoyment!
Gawd the 90s had the best music.
Reminds me of my old apartment with my 2 buddies back in the 90’s. Seemed like it sucked back then but how I wish I could go back. Those were the best days of my life.
same here...reminds me of college
@@dougc5258 Hey Doug. I wish that I would have realized it back then. Amazing how fast time moves forward. I’m 3 years away from retirement now. Still partying. Freedom 55 for me. Hope your life is going great. Take care brother 😃
Amen !! Reminds me of the same thing.
Paying the rent with empties lol I know what you mean
I enjoy hearing all the stories this comes with... first apartment, abusive relationships, childhood homes, death, growing with someone. It is quite universal
This song reminds me of living in New York City with my ex-wife , our crazy dog and my beautiful daughter . Those times were the best in my life !
I just love them singing I want them back. Something about that line.
years ago b4 kids, my wife took me to a BNL show. awesome! I especially remember 4 nuns rocking out on the floor-front row. priceless
One of Page’s best vocal performances. This song belongs to him.
You are so right
Just not the same band without Steve.
Ed has a good voice. Steven has an iconic magical voice.
I agree
He is what makes the barenakedladies unique ,that voice !!!!
GREAT mix on this. Thank you, sound Engineer!!
They were so good.feed off on each other's talents. Why o why did the break up .miss this
Some of the best lyrics I've ever heard. "I only came here to talk...:
Best live show I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a shitload of concerts. Miss you Steve
he was a major part of the sound that made them unique. The voice isn't the same and neither is the band
Agreed. Ive seen BNL 8 times. Fantastic shows.
Genesis is a better live show. Actually Genesis is THE best live show
How is the neighbor doing how is her temper this year i turned up your tv and and stomped floor just for fun 😂😂 favorite part
26 years ago the love of my life introduced me to this band during one if our cross country road trips, great memories great times! I lost my girlfriend to lupus few years back and miss her more each day but when I want to smoke I put on barebacked ladies and for a moment go back in time. Miss you babe more then words can say
This song is the soundtrack of my genx life!
I want them back
Killer, awesome performance 😎
I want them back... Feel ya brutha I feel ya
I am going to see them with my hubby for the first time today. They had to postpone this show for two summers. I have been a fan since forever, but hubby hasn't seen them live.
So excited, they are such a fun band
Just bookmarking this for myself to click on quick..love his voice here especially 2:10
Best thing to come out of Canada since Maple Syrup. Love 'em.
Crash Test Dummies...
Don't forget Rush and Triumph!
Sounds so damn good. It's better than the studio version but just as perfect in every way.
BNL + Steve = BNL
BNL - Steve = something different.
I just had the most AMAZING 90’s flashback 🥺💕🙏🏻
Saw them at horde festival 98. Fun times. Even met a beautiful woman there. I was 17 . Wish I could do it again. So fun
I still have my huge and awesome 90’s CD collection.
Me too. But they're all partied the fuck out. Ha ha. Have a great day!
The energy that they start this tune with is just amazing.
How they all looked at each other. I’m just…this is where I live
This is great. Real talent.
Ed, without a doubt, a great writer and performer. Steven though, provides the passion. I miss the passion from my favourite Caknuckleheads
Well put, me too
If I was the maraca guy, I'd still be telling this story
Lifelong fan. These guys shoot me right back to being a dumb happy kid.
5/31/23 still love this song!
BNL, saw them twice. They always engaged the audience
Great tune! Still strumming along in 2021!
Live on Conran was one of the highest energy hits on Late Night.
Without Steven, just memories fading into dull tableau....
Will somebody please tell me why he left in the first place?? I can't get a clear answer on google either
@@Humblemumble7
It has to do with Colombian Marching Powder....
@@jordan390a Oohh, So he joined the political resistance committee, in the colloquial "Colombian Revolution?" Damn I never pegged him for a freedom fighter... that's insane!
Stumbled across these guys in 1998 and had to play catch-up. One of the truly great bands.
Page as the main singer!! This is where we used to live!! 🎉
The girlfriend who introduced me to The Barenaked Ladies shared that old apartment with me - a two up two down in the first housing belt of London. We've got a much larger house now on the side of a hill and she most definitely loves me and keeps me warm. Me and the children. The tug of that old house is still keen.
I recall this song yay what s black fully assignments
Loved this song. Just listened to this song and I just started to always listen to your songs.
Anthom of the 90's! Been to many BNL concerts. Last one was in Boston in the late 90's.
Way to go Stephen !!!
Stephen is on fire here!!!!!
Stephen Paige made the ladies. I want them back.
Get en back together!!!
Also; gotta love the y relentless stand up bass man. Atta Canadiaret Top
Now after so many years this song make sense to me .... Great memories
We would all commit crime to turn them dull tableaux into motion just one more time.
Love this song.
Everytime I watch this it still makes me laugh ...
Great song!!
Great stuff wise heart this these songs huh
I love this .Awesome
And he is the better singer of the 2 of them....Great band!!!
I know we don’t live here anymore…..because we bought an old house on The Danfourth…..one of the best lines ever especially if you’ve partied there
BNL is just not the same without Stephen Paige. These were the days, do bad they had to end...
Cocaine is a hell of a drug!
So good
They're such freakin' goofballs.
I have never heard this band live and I am ABSOLUTELY NOT DISAPPOINTED
Ok this song makes want to fool around
Broke into the old apartment... that was when the guy who lives there kicked my ass.
Pine Knob!
Saw lots of good concerts there back in the day…Beach Boys, Chicago, REO Speedwagon, Gin Blossoms, Doobie Brothers…I’m showing my age.
Is this at DTE?!
Total class act!
They really should have headlined the Pawnee/Eagleton merger concert. That would have been epic.
That ending lol wtf hahaha
Cool to see Ed Sheeren jointed Barenaked Ladies.
🎉
Saw them last night for the first time. Wondered if they'd play this without Stephen. They didn't. Disappointed, but I get it.
Very good sound quality... Is this available as a full show?
There are very few bands that can really kick ass live. This is one of those bands.
They were until Ed got greedy
Does anyone know who the baldheaded guy in white clothing is sitting behind Steven?
Seen BNL without Steven and have seen Steven without BNL.....no comparison. Steven Page solo is 100x better. BEG HIM BACK ED!
Fan boys suck
"Beg him back" like Page wasn't the one who got caught with coke. Have to appreciate the other members
He's just out with the boys at the old pub. Hey said fuck it im going in. A couple too many or maybe not enough. He and his wife/girlfriend have clearly bought a house on The Danfourth. This is not about them fighting. He's just hammered and reminiscing. She is either just at their home waiting for him to get home or shes out with friends. He's just loaded and high lol
Is that Scott Van Pelt just hanging out in back?
Loove Steven Page
Is that the Budweiser stage?
Steve should have never left
Huh, this was my life about a zillion years ago. I don’t want the dish drainer anymore. I
So however want closure. So when I’m in the sauce…
"Old school maracas...."
やっぱり五人がいい!
The fourth floor with two elevators
A small outside balcony
I wonder if Steve has any regrets leaving the band.
I’m not a fan but live performances like that separate the entertainers from the musicians.
Broke into the old apartment
This is where I used to shit
🚽
Or installed a new tiolet lol
"this is where we used to live" sounds so familiar from another song that I can't place. It's gonna kill me!
If I had a million dollars .. I'd get a mortgage on the Danforth (end of song)
Piano players last show, it ended at 2:38
lol, felt that too
if only Seth Rogen was somehow involved in this song/video. seriosuly, I have loved this song for so long, and this version is pretty spot on, but could be tighter.
I didnt know Seth Rogan was the lead singer of barenaked ladies...
They were so good. Drugs ruined the band at their apex
really?
The Ladies need Stephen Paige back.
Why do so many Canadians look like Seth Rogen?
This is the closest thing to real rock the Ladies ever did.
Steven Page was the best part of BNL. Ed Robertson is a fine vocalist and songwriter but a bit of a twat, eh? Page was the better singer, songwriter, and the soul of the band who took the band into maturity. I mean, calling yourselves "Bare Naked Ladies" is fine... quirky and will get you noticed when you're young, in your twenties, and in the 1990s but shit guys... this is just sad when you're in your gatdamn fifties. No, Page wrote and sang the most memorable and beloved songs, "Brian Wilson", "Jane", "Maybe You Should Drive", "Be My Yoko Ono", "Wrap Your Arms Around Me", and "Blame It On Me". All the best to BNL, but Steven Page was that band.
Just not the same without Steve.
Great pop storytellers and always having fun and yes Trump Won and you All know it
Too bad Ed was a jerk. They were a great band
Go play a real instrument, Ed. Steve just took the limelight back.
Probably one of the most disappointing lead singers after hearing the music on the radio. No passion, style, looks, energy. Literally his back up guitar guy stole his spotlight without doing much.
