I played the song at my wife's funeral in 1999 she loved queen.

My dad took me aged 6 to Knebworth Park to the last concert on the Magic Tour, little did we know we were seeing Freddie Mercury performing live with Queen for the last time. This song comes on and it's SO different from the studio that he says "I want this played at my funeral ". He got his wish.

The only tech they would use would be suddle overdubs to cover voice cracks in live songs but it would be rare to do it

Freddie is what made Queen. His voice and stage presence. The rest of the band is wonderful but they would have never reached the heights they did without Freddie.
First of all, I think we all agree to say that it's an amazing song, written by Brian May for the movie "Highlander". I (re) discovered this song last week, I am in my Queen period since 2 years now, but this version... I am voiceless. So beautiful. It's perfection to me, the little French man that I am. With this song in this version, Queen touches the stars, no doubt about it. I've seen this version from Budapest for the first time 2 weeks ago, and I have to admit that I cried at the end.
But somehow, it's really Freddie's anthem. He once said in an interview that he just couldn't picture himself as a 60-year old man. Every day, in every way, he put everything he had into life, squeezing out every drop of vitality.

I agree - this version just gives a "jaw drop" reaction - mesmorizing. Another Queen song featured in this same film (Highlander) is ONE YEAR OF LOVE (just Freddie & John, lyric video only). It has a bit of an R&B vibe -- and the style of the song impacts what voice he found for it. Really striking.

Never get tired of hearing or seeing Freddie performe. He is always pitch perfect. A true perfectionist. While we miss Freddie so, he lives on through his music and definitely in his videos. I am so blessed to have found him and QUEEN in my golden years. They were friends, they were family. With that mindset how could they lose. It becomes very powerful when you're facing down death and listen to it. It becomes much more powerful when you know you are. Freddie did. There will never be another Freddie Mercury, but I hope when I do die and get to Heaven that he is the one that's leading the angel choirs in power ballots like this.

I was stunned to find that the first performance (Show "You are Super") I heard was when she was 14!!!!
She's now 18 and still developing. She sings in Russian, French, English, German, Spanish and Arabic.

I have seen many people comment on other pages that they think that the 1986 Wembley concert produced the best live version of this song. They obviously have not heard what came out of Budapest. Freddie's voice was so much stronger here. Not that Wembley was bad but Budapest was near the start of their European concert tour. Wembley was the very end of their European concert tour. By the time they got to Wembley, Freddie's voice was not as strong as it was in Budapest and it is clearly obvious listening to both nights. At Wembley Freddie was making adjustments to how he sang the song. They were not huge adjustments but he was doing the same thing he often does with Bohemian Rhapsody. He is singing certain parts going lower instead of higher and he is not pushing his voice quite as much. The strength and emotion he put into the Budapest version is awe inspiring.

I'm 74 and forget just how great Freddie Mercury was. I have loved Queen & Freddie forever! Adam Lambert has stepped up and in my opinion is pretty remarkable. I'm used to hearing him sing this song. Thank you for your reaction, as I respect your views!

Adam's version at the Isle of Wight is perfect too. They are both one of a kind singers that no one can touch. Freddie is so great and well Adam vocals just soar and he rarely isn't perfectly singing. I love them both. For Brian, Roger and John to be able to work with Freddie and create such amazing music... how lucky were we. Years later for others to point them in Adam's direction when they weren't even planning on doing anymore Queen... how lucky for us to be able to remember and honor Freddie.

Since my last comment I have heard Queen+Adam Lambert perform this the day after a shooting in a gay bar in 2016.Adam dedicated it to the victims and performed it so neither Roger nor Brian had heard it sung like that before - - it's amazing - you should take a listen. You do know that they have performed together for more than 12 years with 3 musicians on keys, bass and drums in the back.

Without doubt one of my favourites (trouble is I have so many …. Easier to just say Freddie singing live with Queen is my favourite !)
Brian May wrote this for the film "Highlander". This is one of he few Queen songs that I think I prefer the "official" version rather than live. He includes a few high notes that he doesn't try for live, and Roger is playing a drum that you can feel in your soul.

Freddie’s voice is really straining in this version.. (Although on a BAD day.. Freddie was better than most everyone ever)!! One of the things I love most about Queen.. is how they compliment each other. Brian’s guitar solos are always a continuation of Freddie’s voice.. Roger backs Freddie like no one should be able to do, and John.. well, he and Roger just always set the tone for the songs. Great reaction.. thank-you!!

I think that lyrics of this song performed in Budapest have deeper sense since concert in Hungary in 1986 was one of last live performances of Queen because of Freddie's illness.

You should also listen to this song by Queen + Adam Lambert from the Isle of Wright festival. Song was dedicated to the victims of Pulse nightclub in Orlando, FL the night before. Just a different take and voice. Roger said he never heard Adam sing it quite like that before.

Hey, I found myself listening to a lot of The Voice from various countries, I love seeing amazing new singers trying to get a break. I recently found the winner of The Voice Germany 2021. He does an abbreviated version of Who Wants To Live Forever. After hearing it, I have been watching other performances, by both Queen and other artists, and I have to say his version is pretty amazing. Would love to see you review his performance.
