This song was inspired by, and written for, the movie Highlander. The hero of that movie was a near immortal, one of a group of such, who could only permanently die if they were beheaded. The movie portrays the life of this immortal, and the tragedy of his first love aging and dying while he remained the same age.
The first time i ever heard this song was in the movie Highlander, same with the song Princes Of The Universe. I was in my early teens at the time (I'm 42 now) and had never heard of Queen other than their songs Another One Bites The Dust, We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions which are regularly played at my high school's American football games. Music is an escape for me and it wasn't until 2016 when I was dealing with the death of my parents that by happy chance I found Queen's Live Aid set on UA-cam and was instantly hooked. I went searching for every Queen song i could find and now have a playlist devoted solely to Queen. I was heartbroken when i learned that Freddie passed away in 1991. His voice and stage presence is so powerful and continues to be unmatched! Who Wants To Live Forever and The Show Must Go On are my absolute favorite Queen songs, but I love all their music. Rest in peace Freddie!!!
I was there that night and Freddie, as always, had the whole crowd spellbound with this song. His range and power were wonderful to behold. A night I'll never forget.
@@LMTino if you look at other songs from that night, many of them in shots from behind Freddie, show a large spotlight shining on the stage. We were underneath that light!!!
As a Queen fan of over 35 years, after first being in THAT crowd at Live Aid in 1985 and seeing Queen for the first time live, and then twice the following year in 1986 (Wembley & Knebworth), I was actually in the crowd at this concert and when Freddie sung this song you could hear a pin drop amongst all 72,000 of us, it was breathtaking and something I'll never forget. Please DO NOT place any reliance to the actual facts from the BoRhap movie. Freddie did not find out he had AIDS until Easter of 1987. He suspected that something wasn't quite right with his health at this point but the actual diagnosis didn't come until about 8 or 9 months after this concert. Stay safe from Manchester UK x
The band were never almost breaking up. The film, for some reason, chose to base the storyline on a fictional premise. They had just finished touring and were all doing their own thing. Freddie, in fact, was the last band member to try a solo project. They had their squabbles, but in numerous interviews, both Brian and Roger have confessed that it was they who were often at odds, and Fred was the peacekeeper. He wasn't late to the studio, and he always knew exactly what was going on with the song writing. They use to have a policy: Whomever wrote the lyrics got songwriting credit. Many of their songs, however, started from scraps of something, which the band pieced together to form a song. It was mostly Freddie or Brian who brought finished products to the table. They all wrote hit songs, however, and each of the band members has written at least one song that is a favorite of mine. Great reaction, but I'd read up, or watch some documentaries instead of relying on the film, Bohemian Rhapsody to learn about Queen.
Bohemian Rhapsody movie is full of inaccuracies. Queen never broke up and Freddie wasn't the first one to go solo. Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987. Who wants to live forever has nothing to do with Freddie's illness, the song was written by Brian May (Highlander movie) Check out Freddie's solo Exercises in free love - you'll be in shock when you hear his voice. .
Also Queen just came off tour two month before Live-Aid. That would be there last tour even tho Queen still put out music. Queen didn't go on tour until after Freddie death. They where fronted by Bad company lead singer Paul Rodgers.
JUST JORD The film is inaccurate when it shows Freddie Mercury telling Queen before the 1985 Live Aid concert that he has AIDS. He was not diagnosed until 1987 which is also a year after this concert.
Freddie probably suspected he had AIDS by this time, but he didn’t get diagnosed until April of 1987, almost a year after this concert. And he didn’t tell the band until they were recording the Miracle album in 1989. Don’t believe everything in the movie. They’re still legends though
Exactly. I did enjoy the movie, but they took a lot of "poetic license" in the movie for dramatic effect. As you state, Freddie probably suspected it as far back as 84. Not that he noticed anything on his body, but the fear that this disease was out there and other than through the blood supply, could only be transmitted with the "exchange" of bodily fluids, either sexual contact or recently used then shared needle. Now it has never been reported that he shot up any drugs, but of course we all know he was bisexual. And he did not test positive until 87. Which you can see how his body changed as he gained weight working on Barcelona. He may have been trying all sorts of weird diets to help his immune system. He became "robust" through much of 88 and briefly in 89. If you look at the videos in the studio for The Miracle, he starts to lose that robust look. He starts to thin out and not really in a good way, which is why he probably had the "5 o'clock shadow" look for awhile then. And of course the next year with the Innuendo recordings where he was looking very gaunt. And he either told the band during The Miracle sessions or some say, even the band, that he didn't say anything until they started the Innuendo sessions. My guess would be somewhere in between the two sessions.
@@philipgolia4554 We do know he told Mary Austin around Easter 1987 and Jim Hutton was also told around the same time. In fact it was actually Mary who told Freddie he had aids because Freddie didn't want to hear it from the doctor. He did tell Monserrat Cabele during the Barcelona music sessions saying that he probably wont be able to perform it for the 1992 olympics. So i wouldn't be surprised if he told the band around 1987/1988.
The song was for the film Highlander, and Freddie hadn't yet been diagnosed with anything, both Dr Brian May and Roger Taylor have said that the film which I've never seen, has been changed slightly with events as they couldn't get everything into a couple of hours, Freddie wasn't diagnosed until at least 1987
Gorgeous Gorgeous!! 💞 This song was written by Brian for the Highlander movie soundtrack. All Queen members wrote a song for the soundtrack - GIMME THE PRIZE (Brian) A KIND OF MAGIC (Roger) PRINCES OF THE UNIVERSE (Freddie) ONE YEAR OF LOVE (John). Freddie was officially diagnosed in 1987. Queen is a very special band of brothers!! 👑🌟⭐️💫 Thank you!! 💟
Please please if you get a chance, listen to Freddie mercury Exercises in Free love, its no words, tones only. Just for his range, it's beautiful. So, back to this tour, Freddie said he couldn't do it anymore, as in tour, after this Magic Tour, Roger actually said in an interview that he thought Freddie had an idea he wasn't terribly well... Freddie was getting very tired. According to Mary he knew. But the actual HIV AIDS came out in 1987..he tested positive in the spring of that year. But that man sung until 6 months before he died. That says at about the strength of this man.
Freddie brought passion to each of their songs,no matter what, going back to their beginning. This song is so moving;made for the movie Highlander. The way I see it,Freddie took sips of beer. He also had water with honey for his throat. Quite necessary for him to whet his whistle.
This was performed for the soundtrack of the film Highlander (Christophe Lambert, Sean Connery, 1986), it wasn't about Freddie. Still a great song, though, and beautifully sung.
Oh god. Bohemian Rhapsody is a MOVIE. Not a documentary. Its taken alot of stuff (specially the aids thing) into the movie which ends with Live Aid in 85 when it hadnt happened yet. The same with alot of songs. They Are out of order of when they were recorded /released. He was diagnosed with HIV after this concert tour. You don’t have to say a word Your expressions were Beautiful . No he didn’t know he had AIDS at this time. The Movie was not a documentary . He didn’t know until 4 years before he passed. 💞💞
Great reaction, thanks. Please, don't base your knowledge on the film, because it's full of false information. Freddie never wanted to leave the Queen and the band never came so close to break up as it was shown. They all made their solo stuffs being a bandmember and Roger often went to Munich to giving some backing vocals on Freddie's album. You should watching to documentaries and interviews with the bandmembers to get to know their real lives. (Btw, I love the movie.) Brian said once: We all lied to everyone to protect Freddie. Yes, there was real camaraderie between them and I think it's uniqe.
Brian wrote this one, after seeing a test cut of the Film highlander(with the rest of the band). Its not related to Freddie.... Freddie was supposedly not diagnosed till 87, but he (as has been said here) did suspect. Since his passing, the song is associated with Freddie not Highlander so much, funny that.
He really didn’t know until 1987 , four years before he passed . He was ill in 85, but didn’t know with what. He was Unusually exhausted after this show and was his last tour. Don’t go by the movie. It wasn’t a Documentary it was just a made up script. I loved your a heartfelt reaction very much . Thank you.💕 Freddie found out He had this dreadful disease while he was performing with Montserrat, Caballo
Freddie wasn’t diagnosed until 1987 & he didn’t tell the band until 2 years later although they knew something was wrong they didn’t talk about it which is what Freddie wanted x
@@lindsaycrellin4588 I was listening to a radio show called night owls when it was announced he had died. Its a late night show goes on until about 2 am. Half way through they have a musical interlude, they explained that the music had to be brought in because it didn't have a library in that studio. They had a song request for weeks but couldn't play it until that night, it was the only free spot available. That song was 'who wants to live forever '
Yeah, long and short is that Freddie suspected something was wrong, and got tested some time after this tour. Diagnosis in '87 and (we're told) band informed in around '89. Freddie believed 1989's Miracle album would be his final one, and so some of the songs have a kind of retrospective feel, but he lived on long enough to make Innuendo with Queen, which really did feature his final goodbyes. The movie does not tell a true story, and most of the timelines of events cannot be relied upon. The official Queen UA-cam channel has a good range of official documentaries, behind the scenes, making of... videos and interviews and is always the best place to start if you want to know the facts and dates!
Freddie didn't get diagnosed til 87 but that time he didn't have HIV he of course had AIDS but he didn't let that deter him. Freddie was an amazingly talented and brave man
Thank you so much for this moment you've shared with the world. Your reaction was so kind and touching that my tears are running down. I'm already old and, so, I remember hardly well when Freddie leaved us... Today, thankfully, there is a cure but, back then, it was such un injustice for those who contract that illness. Unfortunally, I personally lost two friends... I am a good music lover but simply love rock. And Queen fills me up, they did and played all kind of it. And performed brilliantly. God bless them for it. Sorry for my miserable english and, once more, thank for your emotional reaction and honest comments. Greatings from Portugal
Zhou Shen has a high, feminine voice that often got him bullied in school. If his classmate only could have seen the talent in that voice. As an introduction into Zhou "Charlie" Shen, begin with his premiere performance on the Voice of China singing HuanYan. After this first video, move on to his versions of "Memory", and "Time to Say Goodbye". For something different from him, watch his version of "Ring the Doorbell" and "Da La Beng Ba". His biggest success is the song "Big Fish". Another singer that is highly rated is Hua Chenyu. One never knows what one will get with a Hua Chenyu song since he mixes genres and composes many of his own songs. He is an epic stage performer spilling his emotions into the audience so they can share in those emotions. He is also a master are redeveloping cover songs into his unique perspective. I have a recommendation list, but it is not really in any particular order. "Nunchucks", "Child", I am what I am", "Fake Monk", "Friend", and "Dad, I'm Home"
Freddie didn't know he had Aids at this point but he was in a great deal of pain, not that the fans would have realised anything was wrong at the end of this tour he realised something serious was wrong beyond normal fatigue and muscle pain he told the band I'm done with fkg touring they didnt take it seriously at first thinking he was just in a bad mood they later realised he was serious,he said he would carry on recording after a yesr brake?(which ended up being longer) only if they all really wanted to,also agreed to doing things differently inc shared credits Mary was at the last performance and said the way he looked at her she just knew something was wrong but he didn't find out until April 87 full blown aids and sarcoma skin cancer he never told his family he had Aids he only told his sister Aug 90 he was terminal because she asked about the marks on his leg but he gave no explaination he never discussed it with his parents it was a couple of years later he told the band, well sort of it wasn't really discussed properly
Freddie definitely knew that he probably did have HIV, although he wasn't officially diagnosed until the following year in 1987. However, he kept his diagnosis SECRET from almost everybody, including his band mates... He didn't finally tell the three of them until 1989, when his illness was becoming obvious in his weight loss.
He didn't find out he had AIDS until April 1987. He may have suspected he had it when this concert was performed but there wasn't anything concrete until almost a year later. I simply cannot listen to Freddie sing this song without tears.. absolutely heartbreaking! I often think about all the additional 'best songs in the world' we'd have if Freddie would have survived... but then I realize that I'm truly thankful that he was given to us at all.
As much as some stuff in the movie didn't happen or in the way it did, I still think it was the movie Freddie would have wanted, as it gave people the escapism in Queen music and brought the people together again though it
The film "Bohemian Rhapsody" while very good in its own way, took a lot of liberties with the actual facts. You can't quote from the film as though it was completely true, this is what I hate about Hollywood, they take something based on fact and "educate" people to believe otherwise. Yes, there were some real facts in it but not as many as you'd like to believe. Anyway, this concert, live at Wembley was performed by Queen in 1986 but Freddie wasn't diagnosed with AIDS until 1987 (and certainly not during Live Aid as the film claims!) so no, neither he nor his bandmates knew about his illness when this song was first recorded (for the film Highlander) or performed in this concert. They were all spared that at least. But it is a little prophetic. Cool reaction to an amazing performance. (EDIT: I see a lot of what I've just said is mentioned in other comments which I obviously didn't read beforehand!)
@3:20 There I am right at the front with my then girlfriend. She's the small blonde girl white T shirt being squashed and I'm to her right. Great day great concert. Status Quo, The Alarm and INXS were also on the bill. Stuck at the front for over 8 hours :)
Freddie Mercury had not been diagnosed with AIDS at the time of this concert he was not diagnosed to 1987 actually had been tested that year and the test came back negative but I'm testing in 1987 came back positive
New Subscriber but a QUEEN FAN for decades. The OFFICIAL VIDEO is beautiful and this live concert is POWERFUL and gives me CHILLS. I believe FREDDIE knew he was HIV POSITIVE but he it did not turn into AIDS till 1989. RIP FREDDIE MERCURY 11/24/1991, 1946-1991 he was 45 YRS. 🩷❤️💕❤️🩷🩷❤️💕
My friend and I discussed this Wembley performance and the one the day after/before. We agreed that the other night (link right here) is more passionate and I feel is better. His strength is even better and the oh yeah oh yeah right after showcases his vibrato expertly! ua-cam.com/video/MOhuK7aZayw/v-deo.html Emotional true about him bringing up 'until we die' & it is easy to tie it to his situation because we have that foresight. But even Freddie didn't have such a specific crystal ball and he was just probably segueing (leading up to) announcing the song title in spectacular fashion. It's hard to watch things as if we don't know what's going to happen because we do - but transport yourself to that time and view it without the advance knowledge. And his physique is too strong to have been feeling the end is near at this point of his time. By the way - Freddie ironically was the last of the four to dip into solo work. The other 3 already did separate things.

yes he was having marriage problems but this is a bit misleading
the album was recorded Sept 85 to april 86
I don't know which month he wrote this song but he started having an affair with Anita who he is now married to in 86
his wife had their third child in 87 I think she found out about the affair after, there's no clear information they then had a divorce 88?
he co wrote too much love will kill you with two people outside of Queen about the brake up which was meant to be on the miracle album
as for Freddie I don't know how why Brian thinks freddie was ill in 85 early 86 because Freddie didn't! he beleived he was in good health except for occassional throat problems which he had during live Aid but he would have put that down to them just doing a world tour and 'one of those thing'
I think he had done damage so it was a re accuring problem
looking back what we know now it may have been due to Hiv
no one close to him have said he had concerns about his health in 85 early 86
they finished the album in April 86 I think he got involved with anita after thi they were recording in Montreux and munich
freddie thought he was fine until they finished the tour August 86 and realised something serious was wrong
he may have not been happy in his marriage when he wrote the song but he was with his wife then had an affair then they had their third child
Freddie beleived he was well when they were recording the magic album
there was nothing to make Brian beleive he may not have been well
Freddie thought he was! so not sure why Brian would think diffently

and found out a year after recording that he had Aids april 87

No he didn’t know he had AIDS at this time. The Movie was not a documentary . He didn’t know until 4 years before he passed. 💞💞
I saw Queen several times beginning in 1975 and the whole band gave it their all to every song and every performance.
Nailed it. I cry.
(Btw, I love the movie.)
Brian said once: We all lied to everyone to protect Freddie.
Also the timeline in the film was messed with for Drama. Brian pointed out, its a movie, not a documentary
Thank you.💕
Freddie found out He had this dreadful disease while he was performing with Montserrat, Caballo
This voice ! Freddy is the best show man
The song was written for the movie 'Highlander' (1986), about a Scottish immortal, born in 1518.
He just had an amazing voice
From the Film Highlander
Freddie wasn’t diagnosed until 1987 & he didn’t tell the band until 2 years later although they knew something was wrong they didn’t talk about it which is what Freddie wanted x
True but he knew something wasn't right with him and he suspected from what we know.
@@jpw6893 yep true x
@@jpw6893 it’s a great song how amazing was that such a sad loss still very much missed x
They had not been apart, they had been on their S. Anerican tour and had just finished months of concerts less than 2 months before.
I subscribed due to your respect to Freddie.
This was a two consecutive night show and this was from the second show on Saturday. I think the one from Friday was a bit better.
Please keep going on with QUEEN!
We are HUNGRY for Queen! Great to see you reacting to them!❤🙏🏻
Brother you have another subscriber 😀
Beautiful reaction ❤
Teo torrietoe was played at the olympics this. Year
Freddie drinks liquid all the time for his voice, even on stage for those big notes:)
More queen please :) ! thx
Subbed a long time ago for queen
Freddy knew , the sand never. This song was for the soundtrack for the movie highlander.
Freddie didn't know he had Aids at this point
but he was in a great deal of pain, not that the fans would have realised anything was wrong
at the end of this tour he realised something serious was wrong beyond normal fatigue and muscle pain
he told the band I'm done with fkg touring
they didnt take it seriously at first thinking he was just in a bad mood
they later realised he was serious,he said he would carry on recording after a yesr brake?(which ended up being longer) only if they all really wanted to,also agreed to doing things differently inc shared credits
Mary was at the last performance and said the way he looked at her she just knew something was wrong
but he didn't find out until April 87
full blown aids and sarcoma skin cancer
he never told his family he had Aids he only told his sister Aug 90 he was terminal because she asked about the marks on his leg but he gave no explaination
he never discussed it with his parents
it was a couple of years later he told the band, well sort of it wasn't really discussed properly
The best song of all ♥️
Great song. GREAT performance.
As always a great reaction. It is not live but the show must go on is very moving.
YESSS... and PLEASE, watch the official MV, NOT the fan-made "live" version that's trending around YT right now. The audio in it is awful.
such a performer!
God, I miss Freddie 💔
Freddie definitely knew that he probably did have HIV, although he wasn't officially diagnosed until the following year in 1987. However, he kept his diagnosis SECRET from almost everybody, including his band mates... He didn't finally tell the three of them until 1989, when his illness was becoming obvious in his weight loss.
You must listen to the studio version of Bohemian Rhapsody it's really their best shot thanks
Listen to another master piece called innuendo and listen to the lyrics.
We gonna stay till we fucking die...he kept his promise...I miss you Freddie...
As much as some stuff in the movie didn't happen or in the way it did, I still think it was the movie Freddie would have wanted, as it gave people the escapism in Queen music and brought the people together again though it
Listen to Freddy Mercury and Montserrat Caballe singing Barcelona, live at La Nit. It will blow your mind.
He’s usually drinking warm lemon and honey.
Beautiful song
Freddie Mercury, God Of Music 🎶
epic " JORDONGK please do the Dire straits classic " sultans of swing from the Nelson mandela concert in 1988"
Medical student in London in the 80s HIV/ AIDS were devastating
Powerful!! Bless you 😎
See the other comments & take the movie with a cup of salt.
“Save Me” and just about any song from this 2 night concert are great. 🔥🎶🔥
I know is not a documentary, but the movie is so full of inaccuracies that it bother me a lot.
Lynn..I agree..that movie was a travesty...how did Brian and Roger agree to that? John Deacon, a true friend to Freddie. I hope he’s keeping well🌺
Written by Brian May for the film Highlander
Couldn't have said it better fella 👏
The GREATEST Band of ALL TIME.
@3:20 There I am right at the front with my then girlfriend. She's the small blonde girl white T shirt being squashed and I'm to her right. Great day great concert. Status Quo, The Alarm and INXS were also on the bill. Stuck at the front for over 8 hours :)
Wasn't this song written for the film, Highlander?
Freddie Mercury had not been diagnosed with AIDS at the time of this concert he was not diagnosed to 1987 actually had been tested that year and the test came back negative but I'm testing in 1987 came back positive
Beautiful!!!!!!!!
Was Freddie born with extra lungs? 😀Freddie was amazing yes I idolise Freddi as well. ❤
Jump on the Queen bandwagon and head down the Queen Rabbit Hole, but hold on tight, it’s a wild ride.
No he hardly ever drinks the beer . It’s warm lemon and honey that he drinks for his throat 💕
was there there is 2 great gods of singing gone that never can be replaced Freddie n Ronnie James Dio
This song wasn't about freddie. Brian May wrote it for a female friend who had passed away.
This was done for a soundtrack of a movie
Like your videos man, keep it up. Could you please react to Bargain by The Who. Cheers
Genuine ❤️
Usually drinks tea with lemon. Beer makes him burp
Just lords you got it so right.
My friend and I discussed this Wembley performance and the one the day after/before. We agreed that the other night (link right here) is more passionate and I feel is better. His strength is even better and the oh yeah oh yeah right after showcases his vibrato expertly!
ua-cam.com/video/MOhuK7aZayw/v-deo.html
Emotional true about him bringing up 'until we die' & it is easy to tie it to his situation because we have that foresight.
What about Prophet's song.?🤘❤
White Queen from hammersmith 1975❤💗it's beautiful balad 🙏🏻
You liked in Dragon song bass guitar React to Another one Bites the Dust! 🔥👊 that is something so catchy and simple you will love it ❤all all this songs are done by Queen!
