Love, look at the two of us
    Strangers in many ways
We've got a lifetime to share
So much to say and as we go from day to day
I'll feel you close to me
    But time alone will tell
Let's take a lifetime to say
    I knew you well
For only time will tell us so
And love may grow for all we know
Love, look at the two of us
    Strangers in many ways
Let's take a lifetime to say
    I knew you well
For only time will tell us so
And love may grow for all we know

Sometimes I don’t think Richard and Karen knew how important their music would become for the generation that grew up with them in childhood. We made jokes about how square and boring they were while we listened to Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. Now that I’m older, I value The Carpenters so very much. They were masters of the studio, but also wonderful composers, arrangers, and interpreters of other songwriters. ❤️

Similar. I liked a few of their songs but still considered it elevator music. Hey I liked riding elevators. Then again, I was ostracized by my hard rock friends because I freely admitted my love for the Beatles, Herman's Hermits, the Monkees and (drum roll please).....the Partridge Family. And I still do, take that!

I love Karen Carpenter and her angelic contralto voice now in 2020 more than I did in 1971 when we both turned 21, she in February and me in November. At age 69 I realize how much she meant to us. I love a comment one fan made: "If she only saw herself as we all saw her." There is no way I can watch and listen to this without crying. My sweet older sister Anne passed away at the age of 56 in 2005. I sobbed every day for the first month. My father was gone, but our dear mother had to endure the lost of the first of her 5 babies. I can therefore both sympathize and emphasize what your dear brother and parents went through in 1983. I love you, dearest Karen Carpenter and I greatly mourn your passing.

Karen Carpenter most "Certainly," had an "Outstanding Voice!"
    So "GIFTED & SO TALENTED!"
How Tragic she was taken WAY to soon in life due to Anerexia.
If ONLY we knew then what we do today as to how to treat this disorder...
Bless you Karen & pray that you are truly at peace.

The first thing that struck me when I heard this live version was you can hear the power in her voice even though the song is not necessarily thought of in that way. The recorded version is beautiful, but this live performance is similar with the exception of feeling a bit more power in the vocal. She was just very gifted....

  • @itznotme58

I'm sure I didn't think the Carpenters were cool enough for me to like. I was maybe 12-13 when they took off. But then I'd find myself telling people, "yeah, but I DO like 'For All We Know' and that Leon Russell song she sings "A Song for You." So you see, I really DID like the Carpenters but didn't know it. I love this song and whenever I hear "..let's take a lifetime to say, I knew you well..." my eyes tear up every single time. The music industry eats its own and I know she had other insecurities but what a loss when she passed away, things could have been so much different.

Did anybody pay attention to the Bassist? This dude was all over the place! For a song like this, most bass players would have held the tonic and played a more discrete and supportive roll. But this guy brings a tonal expression that sings and is wonderful in of itself!!!

I remember at the beginning of high school in 1971, The Carpenters came out with a bunch of great hits, and Karen was this young beautiful girl who sang like no one ever did. Then by time I was a Senior four years later in like 74/75, I saw Karen turn into a woman...She seemed to have her hair style perfect, her fashion right on, her figure fantastic, and her confidence and professionalism at its peak...Then according to the movies and documentaries, somebody in her circle mentioned to her that she was gaining a little weight, or getting a little chunky or something to that effect....and the rest is history....The media knows how sensitive girls are about their weight so that's why they have all of these exercise machines, and Nutri System diets on tv, and all those girls look like they're like 88 pounds...Not Cool...Look at those woman from the 60s through the 90s...Barbara Eden, Marlo Thomas, Raquel Welsh, Liz Montgomary, Charlies Angels, Linda Carter, Shirley Jones, Florence Henderson, Stevie Nicks, Cindy Lauper, Madonna, Shania and Mariah, on and on and on...Karen, and those girls would be considered fat today....Don't believe the hype ladies...It's all Bullshit!...I may be wrong, but that's been my take on it anyway...lol......frankm62yroldwhitekid..rockfan

Similar to what another commenter said here, I want to agree with the tone of her voice was a real persons voice as if someone was talking . That register of low male tones to belting out emotional female tones without sounding harsh or unrealistic. There was no LISTEN TO WHAT A Good SINGER I AM, or Listen to the power I have or how many notes I can squeeze in a phrase attitude.
THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO EGO involved w Karen.
She was a true artistic interpreter of emotion. Letting the story of the song speak through w emotion w a beautiful tender voice rather than the LOOK AT ME Mentality of most of today’s female artists. I’d put Linda Rondstadt in same Category as Karen!!
