Glad to see someone else who uses the 3:1 cut of dewaxed shellac for a sanding/pre-stain sealer. (Sealcoat is already cut 50%, your additional thinning = 75% or 3:1) The bowl turned out great, Gord!
Thanks for having me over,

Thanks for stopping by, Joseph. I'm glad you enjoyed the visit! :-)

Gord, very informative as always. I liked your comment about finishing the inside towards the top first while there is still wood supporting down lower to keep it from chattering.
One other thing, I would have tried to use a hand plane to reduce the protrusion of the walnut inserts some before starting the turning on the lathe to reduce the chance of them dislodging.

Thank you, Keith
+Keith's Shop
Good suggestion, Keith, although I'm probably too impatient to do that. I like working with hand tools but when at the lathe that's all I think about! Thanks for watching and the suggestion!

Thank you very much, George. BTW, loved your work in Patton! LOL. Bet you get that all the time, don't you? Thanks for watching, George.

That's a beautiful bowl Gord, love the effect the inserts create, excellent video showing all the relevant steps. Not wishing to try and teach my granny to suck eggs, but when I clean the inside edge up of the mortice I use a skew in scraping orientation, and the toe gets right into the corner, leaving a crisp transition. can't remember where I first saw that though.
Cheers
Mike
+Mike Waldt
Hi Mike,
Thanks for watching and for the valuable tip. Actually, I have done that myself but I did it this way for 1 of the following 2 reasons:
Either
1. I wanted to show how the different grinds could get into the corner better or worse than the others, or
2. I forgot!
I'll let you decide which you want to believe!!! ;-) HINT: it didn't even occur to me this time.
Your input is always very much appreciated, Mike. Also, I've never tried sucking eggs; just doesn't sound all that attractive, to tell the truth. LOL!!!
Take care, Mike, & Happy Turning,
.....Gord
Lol Gord, I'll let you into a little secret....I forget things all the time. On my hot glue goblet video, while hollowing, I didn't make a depth hole, which I ALWAYS do, as it makes back hollowing so much easier, but in the video I forgot....and struggled on :)
So as they say.....you are not alone.
Take care my friend
Mike
+Mike Waldt
OK Mike, if you want to spill secrets here's one for you. When I started doing these videos part of the reason was that I had "invented" - so had someone else before me, I'm sure - a number of jigs and techniques. The next time I would go to repeat something I would have to invent it all over again because I could not remember how I had done it!! The videos allow me to go back and see what I had done; and I have had to do it more than once. How's that for something I hope nobody else reads. Sheesh, what a putz, eh?!!
Take care, buddy,
.....Gord
+Gord Rock
Thanks for that Gord.....I feel much better now ;)

Gord, a very nice bowl indeed. I think I'll enjoy copying this style. thanks for sharing. Cheers, Gord

Hi Gord! I was looking forward to this video after you did the fluting jig. The bowl looks really nice with those walnut strips. Very nice turning all around! Cheers! Daniel

Lovely bowl Gord, I am really into inlay work at the moment. Cheers, Jim
+Jimson's Stuff
Thank you very much, Jim. Yes, I've noticed that you are INTO inlay work. I think that might be a bit of an understatement!!! I do enjoy your work.
Thanks for watching, Jim,
.....Gord
Gord, Truly amazing work and cool idea - you sir are a master artist - thank you for sharing this
Thank you for the kind words, Phil, although I think I have a long way to go to be an artist. Thanks for watching!
.....Gord
Cool! Wood colored glass! Very nice. I noticed that you might try to crosscut the filler walnut pieces next time. Sounds like that would turn easier, possibly with less tear out. I wonder if you could cut each filler piece in half diagonally to make twice as many fillers and less walnut shavings. I'm always looking to save that precious wood.
+Gil Grace
Glad you like it, Gil. Yes, I had considered cutting the wood strips to get 2 out of each one but to tell the truth I was just too lazy to set up a jig to hold them. I have a lot of scraps that size so I was more concerned with the time than the scraps of walnut. Lazy??? Heck yeah!!!
Take care, Gil,
.....Gord
really beautiful, like always
+alfredo leiser
Thank you, Alfredo. I appreciate that!
.....Gord
Unlike some turners out there, you had things come out of the chuck?!! :) I don't think I've ever met a turner who didn't have something fly out the chuck.. maybe someone thinking admitting to a technical error or simply carelessness is not for him (or her), but come on, anyone who turns long enough will have things fly out of their chuck at some point.. ! :) That is a beautiful (test) bowl!! The finish on all its three coats came out very pretty!!
Yuval.
+Yuval Lahav Woodturning
LOL! I was being a bit sarcastic, Yuval. I know a turner who likes to tell me it never happened while I was there to see it happen!!! It was a bit of a shot at him in good natured joking! I'm sure it has happened to all of us!!
Take care,
.....Gord
gord over the top cool. bob
+Robert Kutz
Thank you, Bob. I'm very happy that you liked it.

Hoo Gord ! You said in this video that you are not an professional, ok then you are an amateur. This Latin word means : the one who Lowe ''AMARE'', and usually an amateur is more capable then a professional. Your work prove it.
+Robert Matter
Thanks very much, Robert. I'm quite happy as an amateur. I don't have the stress that a professional would have. I can't imagine doing this because I HAD to. That would take all the fun out of it.
Take care,
.....Gord
Thanks for the great videos. FYI, Since you are safety conscious, I would really recommend you wear some nitrile gloves for your sanding sealer blend. Methyl hydrate aka methanol aka wood alcohol is pretty toxic stuff and will absorb through your skin. It is processed in the liver like other alcohols and in this case ends up as formaldehyde along the way. Obviously a bad thing for your liver. Cheers
+Jeff Hankinson
Thank you for the information, Jeff. I didn't know that! Much appreciated.
I'm glad you like the videos!
Take care,
.....Gord
Gord I like the bowl I wanna do one just like that at some point. Chris
Thank you, Chris. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching! 😃😃😃🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
@@GordonRock1 I like all your stuff man
Nice job Gord! I'm going back to look at the truing jig and fluting jig videos to see how you did it.
Although I do it, I'm always a little nervous running the lathe in reverse when the project is threaded onto the spindle with a chuck or with a threaded wood-hub Longworth chuck. Sanding in reverse to keep the dust headed into my vacuum pickup rather than my lungs also spooks me. Ever had something unthread itself and try to take flight when running in reverse?
By the way, the finish on the bowl was impressive.
+Wave Trader
Actually, I did have something spin off when using reverse and it was entirely my fault; I had failed to properly tighten the faceplate onto the spindle. I learned from that and have never had it happen since. Depending on what I'm doing I will sometimes bring the tailstock with a live center up to support the end so that it can't take flight.
Glad you liked the bowl! Thanks for watching!
Take care,
.....Gord
Wow! That turned out great Gord. "Not a pro"... yeah right. Could have fooled me.
+Hardnox
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate that but I'm just a dedicated amateur who was lucky enough to find his passion. Being a professional and doing it because I HAD to would take all the fun out of the hobby.
Thanks for watching,
.....Gord
Point taken Gord... but you still perform like a pro in my book. I don't have a lathe but I sure do like watching you play with yours. I've tried to justify getting one but I just can't because i probably couldn't get anything else done then. :)
Btw, here's my website: www.WestphaliaWoodWorks.com

Thank you for the link. Your work is fabulous! Looking at work like yours never gets old. Thank you for sharing your website and your obvious talent!

Gord Rock Thanks for the kind words.
good luck Gord
+ibrahim ibrahim
Thank you very much!
for the sanding sealer can you tell what they are because I have not seen them in Australia and for your friction finish can I use any thinners say standard paint thinners. Thanks Gordon and keep those great videos coming I show them at our men's shed. It is Called the Hume Men's Shed Sunbury. All the best from the land down under cheers Rod Jackson
+Rod Jackson
Hi Rod,
You can find Zinsser SealCoat on rustoleum.com. I use methyl hydrate to thin it because it's a bit thick and I find that it more easily penetrates the wood if it is thinned. It penetrates and dries very quickly.
I'm not sure if you can use paint thinners with Shellac. I've never tried it. This recipe was given to me by another woodworker and I really like the results I get with it. If you don't have lacquer thinner there I guess you could do a test with paint thinner and see what results you get. I would probably post the question on a woodturning/woodworking forum and see what others have to say. I'm sure there must be an expert on finishing who could answer this much better than I can. I am definitely not an EXPERT on anything. I'm just a hobbyist who loves what he does and have an awful lot still to learn.
Thanks for watching, Rod! I appreciate the support.
Take care,
.....Gord
Thanks Gord
I like that! What type of cloth do you use to apply the finishes with?
+Peet Schultz
Thank you very much, Peet. I'm glad you liked it!
The cloth is called Shop Towel in this area. If you're in another part of the world - I'm in Canada - it may be called something else. It is a stronger kind of paper towel. I like it a lot and use it for a lot of different applications.
Thanks for watching,
.....Gord
Zdravim.

How about cutting the walnut pieces diagonally before glueing?
+William Dawson
I'm sure that would work very well as long as the walnut pieces were large enough. Great suggestion, William. Thanks for watching.
Take care,
.....Gord
hi gord I have a question see if you can help me out. I been working with black Walnut and in some parts of the bowl I can't get it to take the shellac finish or the wax finish. is there anything I can do to make it work.
+MANUEL GARZA
Hi Manuel,
I have never had that happen. I assume you have sanded the wood so any oils or wax has been removed. Have you tried a coat of sanding sealer? I'm not sure what else to suggest as I have not had it happen or seen it happen to anyone else before this. Let me know what you find out, if you don't mind. I would really like to know what is causing this. If I think of something else that may be causing it I will get back to you. Sorry I'm not helping at the moment!!
Good luck with it, Manuel,
.....Gord
Yes I sanded the bowl to 400 and then I applied the finish but it still doing the same thing. Thanks.
I was looking forward to seeing a fluted bowl with the indentations you had when you started. The walnut strips added to the bowl are prettily patterned. I am just a tad disappointed.
I’m sorry you were disappointed, Judith. This has been one of my more popular videos with 99% likes. More proof that I just can’t please everyone. I hope my next one will please you more, Judith. Thanks for watching, even if you didn’t like it!
I like the bowl. It's just that I like the way you had cut the pattern into the bowl better
