God. That recognisable chunky wall of fuzz and tone that is the 6505. Fucking love this thing, and Josh playing through one is the icing on a brutal cake.
Guitar Center used section is a gold mine sometimes. This video made me finally get a 6505+ of my own, and I have to say it's everything I thought it would be
Man, the tone on A Sign Of Things To Come is absolutely fucking unreal. I totally see why you went with a 6505 for that album. Love watching these videos and congratulations on the new release dude.
Crest Fallen 6505 plus has an extra preamp tube (more gain) and each channel has its own eq which makes it better for clean sound but I don’t think someone would buy this amp for the clean
Got my 6505+ yesterday. I have ENGL, Marshall and Carvin earlier. Love it! I just set the sweet spot in all knobs and it was ready to rock. Took one minute.
@@uncomfortablynumb7395 I can’t find the exact video so I’ll try to explain how I do it. Just set all knobs to middle. Then use one knob at the time starting from 0 and slowly raise it while having a chord ringing from the guitar. The sweet spot will be right where the sounds stops changing much. Usually there is a kind of a peak and then not much more happens until you raise the knob much more. Stop there at the peak. Go on to the next knob. So hard to explain this. 😂
Also - Try out the 6534+ with some KT77's in the power section, and HG Tung-Sol's in the V1 and V6 slot, as well as a Sovtek 12AX7LPS in the phase inversion slot (V4 if I am not mis-remembering) That's what I'm playing with these days. Absolutely love it when boosted and EQ'd properly.
Absolutely. The LPS swap is one of the easiest and most inexpensive tricks I've ever learned. 15 bucks and no biasing required. Although, the EL34 to KT77 swap makes the most difference. Gotta love that EL34 style with the 6L6 photo beam technology. Best of both worlds imo.
Solid tone. I'm considering getting something like this to record my next album with. I'd like to get away from using plugins for everything, although they're convenient.
I have a 6505+ and I hate to say it but I can get better tones with my DAW/plugins. Its the visceral feeling of playing through a tube amp that cant be beat in my opinion. The saturation makes my pants tight.
Heya Josh - Hope ya well man. Lockdown at last eased up a bit... we can look to maybe working for a living... I'd given up hope of doing any gigs 2021. Anyway... Great enourmous fat dynamic sound... spoonful of quicksilver in a tone of bronze and lead... perfection. All the best to you and yours
Sold my 6505+ a while back and am in the market for another head. Considering another 6505+ but only because I can't try a triple X or a JSX local to me. Any input from fellow viewers would be appreciated. Josh, your innovation and knowledge is simply unmatched and really pushed me to progress with guitar ever since I picked one up for the first time 8 years ago. I can't thank you enough for the inspiration and thank you for the quality content!
Austin Hunter did you end up getting something, the triple x here is real fizzy, it's fun, but I don't think it's very punchy, like a heavy soft fizz idk.
JSX heads are like surgical knife and cut with precision, as opposed to a 6505 and or + version, which a more loose and darker tone. Also the JSX is a smoothed out XXX head with a more usable crunch channel and smoothed out high gain channel w/ added resonance and presence knobs. Ive owned all the desirable high gain Peavey heads. And I still prefer a teal stripe ultra 120 over the XXX and JSX, and it cuts better and sounds clearer then a 6505. It doesn't have as much gain on tap, but nothing that a solid overdrive pedal or tube screamer can't fix, and built in reverb. Finding the factory Peavey footswitches are pain though, it taken me 6 months searching everyday just to find one pop up on eBay.
I have a 6534 I push the front end with boss sd1 airis savage v2 boost bbe sonic stomp maximizer. I leave the amps gain on 3-5 eq treb 4-5 mid 3-6 bass 6. Presence at 8 resonance 6-7. I use a slant oversized mesa cab and the tone is razor sharp but not thin and it’s got this mid range roar that I don’t hear from other high gain amps. The sd1 is used as clean boost and the savage drive has both knobs up to 3oclock.
I'm very interested in getting one of these some day. It's nice to know the clean channel sounds good; I always thought you had to sacrifice clean tone for an awesome metal amp.
Quincy Kane Morris the cleans aren't that good, you won't be playing jazz on on this thing. With some effects you can get a nice sound tho, but usually it's still a little dirty
I think the clean channel is pretty bad. It doesn't feel compressed enough. The volume is all over the place and never achieves clarity. But the high gain is unbeatable for my taste and would sacrifice my clean.
Duuuuuuude id LOVE to know how you get that mix sound , just fantastic ! ---- my tones always sound like your demo clip not the mixxed track , man gimme a shout with mix advice !!
You have officially made my mind up. I am purchasing this head. Would you reccomend the 808? I have a micro amp. Do you think I will get a similar push out of it?
I don't get it. I literally set mine to the exact same settings and it sounds nothing like this. It's rather annoying to be honest. I can't seem to find any setting that I like unless I use a distortion pedal.
I tried my 6505+ the last days and I always have to crank that precence up to 9 or 10 because without it it sounds waaay to dark and bass like... its weird, also how does it sound that juice with pre amp under 7, mine sounds week with every pre emp setting unter 7 or 8
few things that might help, I had the exact same problem and took me a while to figure it out. My rig - cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/146573551246245888/1011756815073153104/20220823_175525.jpg 1. Use the correct string size for your tuning - For example, depending on your guitar/pickups, etc, if you're in drop C and you're using 12-56's, try 11-54's. Bigger strings will make your tone a bit less saturated due to too much tension imo. I used 12-56's for ages and my tone sounded too dry and tight on chugs, in drop C, 11-54's sound much better. Anything lower than drop C 56's are fine. 2. Pickups - some pickups are hotter than others. EMG's will sound a bit more saturated than passives naturally, but you can get away with good passives. I use seymour nazguls which are pretty hot (even too hot maybe). 3. String/pickup height - Mess around with these. Lower action / higher pickup height = more output, vice versa = lower output. Lower/higher may sound more saturated 4.Amp bias - This one also improved my tone. 6505+'s are stock bias'd mad cold, like 14mA cold. There is a safe bias to turn with a screwdriver to the right of your power tubes. Maxing it out is safe because it only stops at around 21ish mA (full bias mod brings it to 36-40ish), but be aware that without a proper full mod you might not want to bias all the way because 6505+'s are designed to be colder, and you will lose a lot of low end the warmer you get in the stock bias, although warmer chords. My stock bias came at 12:00 towards the north screw, and I biased it to 4:00 which warmed it up slightly but in a sweet spot to keep the low end dynamics. Just mess around with it, it's safe. 5. Boost - he's using a maxon OD screamer which boosts signal. 6. high post - at around 2+ volume this amp starts to open up and fills the midrange. 3 post and 5 pre will sound more saturated than 1 post and 5 pre. If you know all this already, cool. If not, it should help. I prefer my 6505+ unboosted at 6.5 pre, 6L/6.5-8M/7H /6.9 res/8 pres, 2.5 post and I can get a pretty good tone out to an sm57.
@@stunbot0 Hey I know its been a year, thanks for the help I have another question about the whole Post amp setting, how can you even put the post amp on like 2+ or even 3+ when even with pre amp being pretty low, when I put my post amp on anything near 2 its so loud I could give whole new york city sound, I don't get how people put it on

Rooster 7six you think the maxon kills the low end? Can just turn your bass back up though right? The tube screamer killed too much low end for me, wondering if the maxon is better about not doing that.
@@jdssurf no, turning up the bass doesn't fix the low end dynamics. I think the pedal compresses the signal while overdriving it through the gain stage, which in turn dulls (compresses) the low end dynamics and results in a more compressed, saturated output. I also prefer unboosted. I've tried to record so many times with overdrives and I always shut them off cause the low end dynamics disappear. However they are really good for fast leads and they work for his playstyle because of that (sylosis, etc)
I can’t get my 6505 to sound nearly that tight unboosted.. what pickups are you using? Or what am I doing wrong? I’m using Duncan Solars and Dimarzios.
Monster tones! Excellent demo. Thank you for what you do - you've really changed the way I look at playing guitar for the better.
