I like the 6505 tone. It has 'mold' on the sound, I don't know how to describe it. Distinctive, in a good way. A thicker tone, compared to a Mesa dual rec, for example
On the combo the cab is enclosed with the head on top. I cut mine off right above the cab, added a bottom piece of wood for the bottom of the head. Then you have a nice 60 watt 6505+ head that you can have and a separate speaker cab. Just a quick mod you can do for a couple hours of time at most.
Rob Chapman# I'm a proud owner of the 6505 plus 120W head with the matching 6505 412 cab, and loving it to bits. I've had it for years, but only used like two or maybe three settings on the Clean/crunch channel. the same for the Lead channel. (I do use an attenuator to keep the landlord pleased though) But what I'm wondering is what settings you're using in this video. It sounds amazing!
Rob and Lee, you guys are my favorite people of all time. You both have an awesome sense of humor, and you're just so freaking nice XD not to mention how skilled at guitar you are :D
OOH Lee you sound good when you finally drop some distortion in your tone! Loving your blues style with some bite in the tone! Chappers brutal as always!!
gregg4164 I agree with you. Rob looks so classic and blusy and that amp is totally for the original metal tone. It is like asking bb king to demo emg pickups lol.
@@danim5881 i'm a huge fan but it's true, his mixes sound really samey. I think he dials his anything to sound like his specific sound. I think Bea is the best dude in this channel for modern gain monsters
+BavarianMonkey Of course, but keep in mind they were building this amp to EVH's exact specifications. If he wanted it to do something, like produce lots of feedback and noise, then they made it so. It did not get into the amp unless Eddie wanted it to. Also, the design of this amp goes all the way back to the early 90s. Nothing has changed since then except the name. But yes it needs a noise gate unless you wanna spend a lot of effort rolling off your guitar volume every time you stop&start playing. Hisses like a bitch everytime you get it up past 4 on the pre-gain with any kind of practice/gig volume levels.
Fifty0ne He certainly did not want it to generate hum/hiss without an input signal present, so there is no point arguing about that. He wanted a certain sound, he got that sound - but it is possible to get exactly that sound without all that noise and without having to use a noise gate... I would have expected the manufacturer to fix this issue by now (after all these years!) but it seems like they were either not capable of doing so or they simply did not care. But hey - people are going to buy it no matter what because "that's like it was back then...."
+BavarianMonkey Costs are a factor when you are designing an amp that is super high gain and you want a lower noise floor. This is a less expensive amp that, although is reliable isn’t made of the highest quality parts available to lower that noise. I play a Friedman which is as high gain as the 6505 and it’s MUCH quieter as far as hiss or anything else. I don’t need a gate with it. I have had quite a few 5150s and 6505s over the last decade and I am friends with the man who designed this amp for Peavey with Eddie. This is an affordable amp, it sounds great and is very reliable. That is what Eddie wanted. His sound in an amp that people could afford. Otherwise he would have stayed with Soldano and had a signature amp that cost over $3k.
Probably the best tones in a video from Rob Chapman & Andertons. Peavey 5150/6505 series are so good at giving you a big raw tone with ease. If i'm not mistaken, it appears Peavey has just recently stopped making the American made 2x12 version, which is ultimately a bummer because it was a nice middle-ground between the 6505 head and 6505+ head. However, I can see why with the production of the minihead version and 1x12 combo that they've decided to phase it out. Not to mention, the 2x12 combo version is massive and extremely difficult to lug around.
@@braydonguitar649 It's funny how the younger dudes don't realize the 5150/6505 wasn't designed to play modern or death metal, just a happy accident for that type of player that they worked so well for that, maybe they never heard Eddie? Listen to VH's Balance album and that is what the 5150 was made for, Ted Nugent has used them forever, and before his Engls, Steve Morse was a 5150 player for years, Satch has had and used one occasionally for over 20 years as well.

The best two amps IMO Peavey makes are the classic and Peavey Ultra Plus. I seriously think the Ultra Plus beats almost any amp I ever have has and I've had sooo many. The trick to them is controlling the seriously powerfeul mids at 3 sound about the same as a Marshall mids at 10.
Seeing capt Lee with a explorer chapman type is weird asf! Would love to see a vid where you play a load of well expensive fenders from the custom shop!
For those of us with a budget (guess most of us (;-) i can recommend the 1x12" combo ... had an hour long test drive and absolutely loved the "crunch" channel ... defies its name ... can go from crunch to "rhythm blast" to defined "soloing with balls"! Guess this is all you need to show up on a (hard) rock or metal jam!
I think this the actual first time i see the cap playing something metal! hahaha, he looks kinda awkward doing it, but still nice tone guys!, Greetings from Colombia.
The issue with the 112 combo is you cannot control the bias at all, and unless you have really hot tubes, the factory setting is really cold... the cleans suck. In fact both amps have a biasing issues, its the biggest problem they have.
Surely the plus sign should be: horizontal left arm bar, right arm hinged at elbow (standard) comes under left, back up to make decent contact. No bird. Yours is a bit X Factor if I'm honest.
Ive has this amp for 10 years. The stock jj tubes were too muddy for me it could have been because the amp was 5 years old when I got it so maybe they were just worn out. I put in Mesa power tubes and did the bias mod so I could run the tubes a little hotter. I used a mixture of Mesa and groovie tubes for the pre amp. I know they make different tubes from different countries not sure which ones I used but I know I went with whatever ones were more expensive. I have never liked super clean cleans on any amp and I’m just not a clean type of player. What I do like is using a crunch channel with a little gain for cleans to get that big thick clean tone with a little gain and this amp has it, it’s also not chimey and not gritty it’s a smooth thick sound which is what I love. It reminds me of the clean tones on blink 182’s album enema of the state specifically the song going away to college. For the settings I use on the crunch channel for cleans you can’t crank the volume a lot or it will get get chimey but you don’t need to There’s a good amount of head room for that. The high gain channel is great and using the tubes I did brightened up the tones a bit which I needed because I was playing in a pop punk band. One thing that does kinda suck is the amp needs to be cranked up not super loud but fairly loud to get the tone out of it that I liked, maybe it’s because I used a little less gain than most people do with this amp. I spent a few weeks perfecting the tone for an album that was coming up and when I got to the studio the engineer wanted the volume down a bit so it took hours to find the tone I wanted. This amp is capable of many different sounds regardless of what anyone says and the down side of that is a small movement of any knob changes your sounds pretty good so when you find you’re sweet spot you need to take a marker so you know where you have it. It’s not a big deal but it’s something to consider. I’ve played other amps that kinda only have one kinda sound and any adjustments really just change that one sound a bit so it’s not hard to find your sweet spot but this amp it pretty touchy. But again that could just be me because I was using a metal head to play pop punk music but I wanted a little more metal sound than most pop punk bands used and again the tube set up was not stock. Also again I was using the crunch channel for cleans so all and all I was using an amp for different reasons than most anyone does so it shouldn’t have been easy for me but the end result for the album was amazing in my opinion. I didn’t use the crunch channel on the album we ended up using something else but all the distorted rhythm guitars were this amp. I added a little marshal 900 for a little bit of the mid tones but most of what you hear is the peavey. If anyone wants to check out the tones you can type in “Mouth Full The Next Disaster” on you tube, pandora or itunes. The band have been done and over for years so I’m not trying to promote anything just saying if you want to hear what the amp sounds like recorded in a pop punk situation check it out. For how cheap this amp is new it’s by far one of the best nothing for even double the price comes close.
I bought a used 6505+ today and everything seemed fine when I tried it out. I mostly tried the lead channel which is what I play only in my band and I just checked that the clean channel was working. But when I got home and started tweaking I noticed that the clean channel did not give any volume except maybe a 1 on the volume knob. I could turn it all the way up and hearing only minimum increase in volume (no I was not turning the pre-gain). After all, my lead channel works perfectly but then I discovered something I don't know how. I think I turned the amp off and removed all my pedals and just tried the direct input of my guitar and started it in the clean channel. Then suddenly the volume was back to normal and went to really loud, but I still couldn't get the "bright" and "crunch" switches to produce anything different. Now when I tried to switch to my lead channel all the distortion was blocked and the sound was also very diminished like before. So I turned it off again, plugged in all my pedals and started it in the lead channel this time and again it was back to only working as it should on lead channel and very low volume on the cleans when switching. Sorry for any grammatical errors, I just hope I cant get some help to understand this. It will be very annoying to play clean riffs that won't be hearable with the rest of the band.
Hey Rob, as we know that you like your Gibson SG, What do you Think about making a Chapman Guitars SG- Type Model? An Affordable one with only one Pickup (like a Chapman Passive Agressive or some AlNiCo 2 Pickup) in the Bridge ; a Mahagony Body and a Recessed bolt on Maple Neck and a baked maple or rosewood Fingerboard and a Volume and Tone knob in a natural or stain Finish.
Recently they have been going towards a mid focused sound with their mixing. I wish they would use a more traditional mic setup, to give you a more generic sound, because this is a demo.
The universal "that smells" look when there's a fat sounding amp being played! Love that look, haha. Not really a fan of the Peavy, but I respect it. I'm sure it can be dialed in for most people. Not sure about those cabs though.

As my idea of an SG double cutaway Guitar found so much resonance I think it has the potency to make it into a stable of Chapman´guitars catalog.
if my idea makes it into a voting here a some suggestions for debate and things the guitar should definetely be:
-The guitar should definetely be a simple bare bone, affordable Rock machine and only have 1 pickup for simplicity, tone(as PhilX says) and price. The headstock should also be kept in an ML2 design spec.

-ash, maple, or magagony wings
-recessed bolt on neck out of maple or magagony
-Mahagony, Maple or Ash body
-Natural or stain finish
-Baked maple or Rosewood fingerboard
-TUSQ or titanium Nut
-Stopbar or Wraparound tailpiece
-Hardware material chrome or titanium
-P-90 or Humbucker (or a P90 in Humbucker form so people could choose between 2 Types of Pickups)
- which P90:-Seymour duncan Hot P90
-Gibson P90
-or what do you suggest?

The issue with the 112 combo is you cannot control the bias at all, and unless you have really hot tubes, the factory setting is really cold... the cleans suck. In fact both amps have a biasing issues, its the biggest problem they have.
I'm looking at this and a Line 6 HDPOD 500X. I can't really decide. I heard they're both really good.
Surely the plus sign should be: horizontal left arm bar, right arm hinged at elbow (standard) comes under left, back up to make decent contact. No bird. Yours is a bit X Factor if I'm honest.
Nice little bit of the riff "nothing" by A 👍
Ive has this amp for 10 years.
For how cheap this amp is new it’s by far one of the best nothing for even double the price comes close.
when will the videos for the rest of the 2016 Gibsons be out?
you guys should get your hands on a Randall RM100 and do a review on the modules.
With that Le' Paul it has a pretty convincing ZZ Top live sound. All that higher gain stuff in Elimnator album too.
How cool that you got Jon Patrucci to do this with you
I think I like the sound of the combo better!
Here´s one for you - A Chapman Explorer ELBOW CUT???? Can it be done?
Love my Peavey 6505 amp and a bargain compared to other metal tube amps that cost 2-5x more. Just wish it was made in the USA and not China.
I have a 2008 one that says made in the usa, dunno if its true tho
@@andremarroquin4267 Yes, they were originally USA made before Peavey moved that model to Chinese production
Have you reviewed some ENGL-Amps yet? I'd love to see one of the Savage or Fireball models!
a black cherry red ghost fret would look so badass man!
I don't understand how you managed to make a 6505 sound like a line 6 spider. why does no one try and get a good tone when demoing amps?!
The finish of Robs Ghost Fret looks like wet asphalt. I don't know if I like it or Love it.
It's probably dirty inside. Mine was . Took it to a good amp guy, cost 65 bucks to get it cleaned .
Hey Rob,
as we know that you like your Gibson SG,
What do you Think about making a Chapman Guitars SG- Type Model?
An Affordable one with only one Pickup (like a Chapman Passive Agressive or some AlNiCo 2 Pickup) in the Bridge ; a Mahagony Body and a Recessed bolt on Maple Neck and a baked maple or rosewood Fingerboard and a Volume and Tone knob in a natural or stain Finish.
love my old early 90,s peavy 300 combo bass amp bw equipped still got it from new.
Recently they have been going towards a mid focused sound with their mixing. I wish they would use a more traditional mic setup, to give you a more generic sound, because this is a demo.
+RobChapman where is the pedal in a loop of 6505+ ?!?
What was that song Cap played when Rob told him to do the "chuggy dun nuh nuh nuh?"
Nothing by A
killer guitar and cool design. far out, rob.
The universal "that smells" look when there's a fat sounding amp being played! Love that look, haha. Not really a fan of the Peavy, but I respect it. I'm sure it can be dialed in for most people. Not sure about those cabs though.
