Anette's studio work is really good. I'm not really a fan of her live performances, but both albums with Anette are awesome.
This song was Tuomas' message to Tarja. He also had a message for her husband on that same album. Even more agressive and angry lyrics, packaged with the heaviest music Nighwish has done so far. It's called 'Master Passion Greed' and it's sung by Marko. They have never played it live, but there is a nice fan-made video around ua-cam.com/video/Bkib0dIziXk/v-deo.html
Of course there's also 'The Poet And The Pendulum' on this album in which Tuomas gives an insight into his state of mind after everything that went down with Tarja.

      Definitely a yes to MPG.
This is the one song that shows very clear that the decision to fire Tarja was unanimous. It's pure rage that grows and grows, yet still stays a great symphonic metal song.

Watching several interviews and listening to several interpretations of the same songs, I understood something: every time a member leaves the band, the one who replaces does not try to imitate his/her style, in Nightwish. I noticed this in the case of Tarja / Anette (explained by Floor in one of her first interviews after entering Nightwish), I also noticed this since Marco left, in a few songs from the virtual concert. Each of them has its own unique voice, and no attempt has been made to duplicate this uniqueness by those who followed. It seems to me an honest approach.
One more thing: I understand that the fans upset by Tarja's departure reproached the band for choosing Anette because she was beautiful in the first place, so in this video they chose a team of beautiful girls instead of all the band members :)

What's the old saying, don't be the guy who replaced the legend, be the guy that replaced the guy who replaced the legend.
    This holds true here.
The biggest difference between the three singers comes down to range of tone and versatility.
Taria and Annette were at opposite ends of soprano.
Floor Jansen can do what the previous two did and everything in between.

The third part of the trinity of anger is "Master Passion Greed", perhaps Nightwish's angriest and heaviest song and directed toward Tarja's husband. Never been played live and never will. If you do it, please do the lyric video so you know what's being sung. Link here: ua-cam.com/video/wS7NrPNjACI/v-deo.html

I concur. The fan-made video is really well made, but I'd say that it doesn't "add" anything. The lyrics video on the other hand... Well, it's not one of the easiest to understand songs (in terms of pronunciation over the instruments), so being able to read along is really helpful 🙃

It has nothing to do with Floor. Nightwish performed this song only on the Dark Passion Play world tour, and then Tuomas considered it irrelevant and had never played it live since 2008, long before Floor.

  • @MyB1971

I've loved Nightwish almost from the beginning. I was young and very sad when Tarja was fired.
When Dark Passion Play came out I was almost shocked. It was so different from what I was used to, but at the same time it was very Nightwish. And so good !!
The two albums with Anette on vocals are for me the best. I come back to them again and again.
With Floor came a new era. She has sung on two good albums. Now they are working on their 10th studio album. I'm so excited about what's coming.🤘

Everything you said about Anette is spot on. She was placed in a rough position, but one she surely couldn't pass up. And she received (and continues to receive) a lot of unwarranted hate. As others have pointed out, she wasn't nearly as good live as Tarja or Floor. She's said as much herself in interviews. She feels much more comfortable in the studio and it shows. In fact, I might even venture to say her studio work is better than Tarja or Floor, in that she really knows how to harmonize with herself and deliver a melody.
It's also worth mentioning the impact she had on the band. On the previous 5 albums, Tuomas was writing with Tarja's powerful operatic voice in mind. Anette's strength is hooks. She's Swedish, the country that's mastered pop music. So his writing changed to accommodate, and even though her stay with the band was relatively short, Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum are right up there with their best. Any Nightwish fan will tell you as much. Unfortunately, the band really shines live and Anette couldn't really deliver.
That being said, I'd recommend checking out her new band: The Dark Element. They're also a symphonic metal band, but a bit more "poppy". Jani Liimatainen writes songs that fully utilize Anette's strengths and they're worth a listen.
Side note (apologies for the rambling!), if you're looking for more Anette with Nightwish, I'd recommend "The Escapist". It's a B-side that never made it on to an album (which is wild to me) and is perhaps her best showing with the band.
    Cheers from Boston

I believe it can be quite a handicap going into this song withou hearing Tarja first. I hope you'll still be able to appreciate their original era with Tarja without any prejudice. I'd certainly recommend watching some of the older hits with Tarja before diving into the Poet and the Pendulum.
For the first impression I'd probably recommend Sleeping Sun, possibly contrary to popular opinion that is you should watch Phantom of the Opera. But Phantom is a cover, but I think that listening to the Nigtwish'es original song would hit differently with you.
So yeah. Sleeping Sun with Tarja would be my suggestion for you.

It's really cool to have someone with your radio experience check out this song. It's not the only song on the album that could be considered perfect for the radio while also uniquely Nightwish.
Honestly, Anette had it tougher than anyone. It's fine not to like her vocal style or to think she needed to improve her live performance ability but every single thing about her from her voice to her appearance and aesthetic to her attitude and personality was absolutely ripped to shreds by a subset of the "fanbase". Slowly but surely she got better and better and my favourite album ever, Imaginaerum, was done with her brilliant vocals but unfortunately I don't think she ever got to fully realise her potential with Nightwish.
Thankfully nowadays she is busy living her best life doing musical side-projects part time while working as a nurse.

I would argue that point, I saw her live during the dark passion play tour and she was good. Her performance was spot on. I’ve seen other performances of her performing live and frankly I think her best vocals were not with Nightwish. Unfortunately for her she was replaced by one of the best singers in the world. We also have to remember that some of Nightwish’s best selling albums were with her on vocals. Those albums would’ve tanked especially the second one if all those live performances were so bad.

Anette gets a lot of unwarranted hate.
She is obviously no Floor or Tarja and she doesn't have the depth of colour but she is good outside the context of Nightwish.
She does some NW songs really well too and those 2 albums she did were two of the most popular - that has to say something.
TPATP is my No 1 Nightwish song so glad you're coming to it. (No 2 is Song of Myself and No 3 is 7 Days to the Wolves)
When you've done TPATP you may want to listen to the demo version which is all Marco vocals sounding quite like he does here in places.
But the demo is angrier, lyrically and in delivery so worth a listen.
Emppu is badly underrated. I'm my opinion he is a true Master, almost a GOAT.

There are three songs on DPP that deal with the break up with Tarja. This one is written about Tarja, The Poet and the Pendulum deals with Tuomas's state of mind after basically he was ran over by the rollercoaster of angry fans. (Even the Finnish Prime Minister was asked to comment on her dismissal).
The third song is about Marcelo, (Tarja's husband) Master Passion Greed. This song is the most dark and angry song Tuomas ever wrote and Marko never sounded more angry, also Jukka tried to kill the drums and Emppu has never sounded chunkier. But the song is killer; good speed, chunky riffs and pure rage that grows and grows in the song.

The Interloper in Nightwish’s History is Tarja’s Husband, Tuomas wrote for Tarja this Changed the Core of Nightwish. Tuomas was Very close to Tarja before Nightwish, Long Friendship Growing Up. Tarja Changed after Marriage, the influence from Her Husband Created a Power Struggle in the band. Tarja Sided with her husband, this was tearing the band apart. Tuomas said Tarja could not be replaced (Talent was too good to him), So he was not going try. Unfortunately a lot of the fans did not respond well to the change, it was said that he was in pain when writing anything that was like what he had written for Tarja. Anette was not Tarja, relief maybe for tuomas in his writing , but the “Change” created a turbulence in the Nightwish World (Anger and Sadness).

Anette was, well is, a brilliant vocalist on her own, no doubt about that. She's just not what a Nightwish vocalist needs to be, she was the Nightwish vocalist the Band members needed her to be at the time but on the long run not the vocalist Nightwish needs.
Annette was a ferry for Nightwish to cross over the bitterness and transform into something otherwordly we see it become. It wouldn't be fair for the vocalist to carry that hate on her words for the rest of the bands life, when she had no role in the original trauma.
Floor 🌸 was the new blossom of Nightwish, and her shoulders carry no weight of the past.

And Yes, Annette is an tragic Figure for my Taste too, and even if any bad Habit Rumor of here is true, so what, she had balls of Iron to Step in, the 2 Albums were Cashcows, She cant take her Kid on Tour, were pregnant....other Females would give them Hell on other Level as she is called out for, after they Sacked her. 2k5 to 2k13 i didnt follow them, not my music, and surely not my style to treat Humans. I be thankfull all my life that my buddies didnt ask just shovelt me to Wacken in the Summer 13 back then.

I love nightwish but I have a soft spot for Anette because she was Era of nightwish that I first heard Dark passion play was my first nightwish album then was a live concert release of that tour. Anette sounded great. My first time seeing Nightwish live was the Imaginarium tour but was a 1 off in Universal amphitheater that I got to see with anette. They did a metal cruise and then back to Europe. Was later that fall they did an entire north American tour for Imaginarium. I seen that as well in CA however that's the tour Anette was a few months pregnant and was let go from the band a few stops before the night I had tix for. Floor was flown in to fill in for vocals the rest of the tour. I was upfront that night. Floor was amazing. Actually she was better than she has been on the last 2 tours. My opinion. Anyway was an exciting time I got to meet Floor and the band and hang out. I have photos with all and Floor was drinking a bud light after the show .I also met Marco earlier that day when they were loading in. Super cool dude.

Imaginareum and DPP were both great albums musically , not a fan of Anette's vocals , sorry ....going from Tarja to Anette was a drastic change vocally and i know tuomas didnt want a copycat of Tarja but for me it didnt work .
I do know Tuomas really wanted Floor after Tarja was kicked out but After Forever was gaining popularity and Floor was really committed to them and he didnt want to interfere with that .

It did get some play in the US, along with Amaranth (my personal favorite) both versions, studio with Annette and live at Wacken with Floor however you're right for some reason mainstream radio never really caught on to their music whether it was lack of promotion or they just didn't think it would be well received by listeners who hadn't been exposed to progressive music at the time, either way BIG MISTAKE! I grew up on ACDC, Zeppelin, Van Halen but NIGHTWISH has been my favorite band for years, don't underestimate what listeners will like, lesson to radio people everywhere you've cheated people out of hearing the best music out there!

As usual, great reaction. Very insightful comments on Anette's position as messenger. Someone else already mentioned my favorite of her tracks, so I'll go concur with it instead of leaving it here.
Who knows how accurate this is, as it's likely a fuzzy memory combined with potentially wildly inaccurate information in the first place, but from what I recall when this whole ordeal went down, the internet fans were convinced choosing Anette was "selling out", "going commercial", "a "vain choice" etc, and the Nightwish sound would change entirely with that. Tuomas responded by writing this very "radio-friendly"-ish song, threw beautiful female counterparts to the entire band into the video, and put out a middle finger to Tajra as well as the entire negative not-fanbase in this song. If someone else has more accurate information, I'd love to hear it. This is just my recollection of various internet board postings 17 years ago.

It's strange you mention ABBA because, as I understand, Anette was an ABBA cover band singer before she was chosen for Nightwish. Or did you already know that?
Anette's 2 albums with Nightwish are my favourites but I think that has more to do with Tuomas' song writing and the state of mind he was in when they were created.

One of the few reaction channels that I have watched where I actually feel like its entertaining and I am learning something and its worth watching to the end!
I am not part of the nightwish army but I fell into that rabbit hole many many years ago but only recently started looking through other nuclear blast records. So many good metal bands seem to end up there. My recommendation, as I would love to hear your thoughts, would be to check out Blind and Frozen by Beast in Black. Excellent reaction. I think you caught my thoughts and feelings exactly . Anette has a great voice for a particular style of song. I happen to like this version of bye bye beautiful better than the other versions I have heard , even live versions by other singers. So to hear Anette at her best I think you made a great choice. Another good choice to hear Anette at her best is the music video version of Amaranth. You caught onto the brilliance of Tuomas's ability to adjust the tone of the song according to the ability and sound of the lead singer. He seems to try to give everyone in the band a chance to show off their skills and make them sound at their best. That being said Tuomas must be in heaven being able to write for a singer who is so versatile , talented and agreeable .

Look at something like "My Walden" or "Alpenglow", "Shudder before the Beautiful" before going on to GSOE, it'll give you an idea of where Toumas is now mentally, emotionally and as importantly creatively.

I appreciate your refusal to weigh the pros and cons of their different singers. For me Floor is 1 if 1 but Nightwish is not what and who they are without the contributions of both Tarja and Anette. Anette is great and never claimed to be a metal singer. Tuomas wrote songs that she could deliver in a studio and she did that very well. There is a reason that their albums with her were so commercially successful. The album versions of Amaranth, Storytime and this track are awesome.

Oh man.. Tuomas flat out said that they couldn't make the new singer sing "Master passion greed" (the really angry song from Dark Passion Pop). Anette had no part in that and didn't want to drag her in. Yeah, Anette was great in the studio, was overwhelmed on stage. Didn't help that the Tarja-ettes blamed her, the one person who wasn't involved in the sacking. Banners telling her to top herself and in the crowd and such. Hey, they still haunt the NW Facebook page nearly 20 years on spamming "Nightwish died when they sacked Tarja" .But, in the end, they still ended up with problematic deva behavior (getting preggers to the support band on tour, making a huge deal when the crowd voted for NW to play without her when she was hospitalised) so that is why Tuomas asked Floor. He'd toured with her in around 2000, knew she was a professional musician first and foremost and Tuomas has mentioned recently he wanted her to replace Tarja but didn't want to be the man who broke up After Forever.

Like a lot of people, I think Anette was a perfectly good singer. Her studio albums are great, and a handful of my favorite songs are Anette era songs. Unfortunately she was nowhere near as good live as Tarja was or Floor is. She also wasn't quite able to do the older songs justice in my opinion. But her major failing, and on she could never correct for, is the fact that she wasn't Tarja. And a lot of the fandom sure as shit weren't going to let her (or anyone else for that matter) forget it.

The thing is that the album is a good album, but not a good Nightwish album.
You can see that modifications were made in order to accommodate Anette. Which brings you to the main problem with Anette in Nightwish. She couldn't carry the rest of the songs.
I've seen them live with Tarja in Wacken, and I've seen them live with Anette in Israel. one can not compare the to shows.

I aprreciate that you caught the fact that this song is a radio composition. Tuomas wanted to be as largely broadcasted as possible probably.
I need to tell you that, Toumas said in a in interview, that the easisest thing to do, is to create a composition of lenghtier duration, and the hardest thing is to write a song which is 3-4 minutes long. For example Ghost love score is about 10 minutes. Poet And the pendulum is about 15 minutes, and The Greatest Show on Earth is about 23 minutes !!! Those are the most viewed songs by reactors - but i must emphasis that there are others as well. For example Creek Mary's Blood - A native americans story which is (as far as i know) the only song used in a movie as a soundtrack which is about 8 minutes, Song Of Myself about 13 minutes (but in concerts are played about 6 minutes) ANNDD what i consider to be the best example - Imaginaerium (not the album, but the song) - a track which is an instrumental track which has about 6 minutes but is a FUSION of all the songs in the album - a remix if you would like.... but with this track you can clearly see how Tuomas creates an album. It's all about inspiration to create a song. Then from that song he can create a whole album and more. ALSO The album Human Nature (the last one realeased) there is a second cd which is a full staggering 30 minutes of Tuomas GENIUS in 8 songs which are all about the planet Earth in a symphony way (not symphonic metal).I really really really would like you to react to Creek's Mary's Blood Live from End of an Era 2004 with Tarja because it's a song that is so underrated - besides that, i really like, love and enjoy what you are doing. ... For the hope that would see Creek Mary's Blood on your channel i am subscribing right now.

"Meadows Of Heaven" if you want to hear another good song with Anette (ua-cam.com/video/vxsjv6LtRz0/v-deo.html), no music video exists as far as I know, you can find a fan-filmed live performance out there but the quality is not at 100%. I myself thought that wouldn't it be nice if we could get a Floor-version of this song, but not long after I had second thoughts - No, this is a good Anette song and let's leave it at that. Don't take it away from Anette, let her "keep" this song as her own. (Some things should just be left as they are, without anyone trying to improve it or make it better.) "Master Passion Greed" is kind of in the same suite as this song (more aimed towards Tarja's other half), but it's a lot heavier, and I really do mean A LOT heavier (ua-cam.com/video/hBTRq2Kgt3Q/v-deo.html).
I was actually thinking the same way the first time I heard the band Psychework from Finland and their song "Siege", it's about the siege of Leningrad during WWII (ua-cam.com/video/q_sAecPORdQ/v-deo.html). Wouldn't it be nice if Sabaton could do a cover of this, after all they are doing songs about war history. Shortly thereafter (just some 10 minutes or so) I changed my mind and thought - No, this is a really good song by Psychework, and Antony Parviainen's vocals is exactly right for this song, in terms of expressing the dispair that people in Leningrad must have felt during the siege (it lasted for 2 years, 4 months, 2 weeks and 5 days - 872 days). Anyone else here who hasn't heard this song - Go and have a listen to it!
I think I need to apologise to you again Eric, I seem to be unable to write short comments. For some reason it turns out to be half a novel every time. Cheers / B.

I guarantee Marko found this as cathartic as the rest of the guys bc he had bad blood w Tarja (pron: Tar-Yuh) for a couple years. Trying to share vocals. And her never showing to rehersals...And he delivers a strong vocal, even w that reverb. Marko makes every song better!
There is one good live video w Anette...a jazz joint called Slow Love Slow. I don't recommend anything else live w her, the backing track is prominent, voice is thin and not much power. But she saw Nightwish thru their most commercial period. And I respect the hell outta her.

Anette took a lot of hate and put up with a lot of shit from the Tarja fans (BTW, it's pronounced TARRR-ia and roll the R). Before doing the Poet, I'd suggest also doing "Master Passion Greed". That song is a raging rant about Tarja's husband, who the band blames for their problems with Tarja. There's no live performance and never will there ever be one, so just grab the album version and run with it.
To give you an idea how difficult an painful this all is, when Floor sings the "Poet and the Pendulum" during the Imaginaerum tour, Tuomas had her vocals removed from his in-ears feed as he didn't want to relive it during the performance. You've probably already got this, but the song draws from the "Pit and the Pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe and its subject of psychological torture.
If you do the Wembley version, and I recommend that one, note how at the end Emppu and Marko are standing with Tuomas while Kai and Floor are looking over at him to see how he's doing.

people also dump on Annette because of how she left. i don't know if it was before the tour, or after it started, that Annette got pregnant. they were already planning to bring Floor in for the South American and Australia dates when Annette was scheduled to take off to have her baby. (the details are from an article i read 2 plus years ago, so, 🤬 dO YoUr ReSeArCh 🤬 if you want exact quotes) then she got really sick. she went to the hospital right before a show in Denver ("The Denver Debacle") and it was decided, either by her or the band, i don't know exactly, that she would not return, and they called Floor, can you come now? Floor appeared with them for the first time in Seattle 2 days later. look up "Floor Seattle Speech" and see her thank the Seattle fans when they returned 2 years later on the EFMB tour. that's the example of how genuine, humble, and real Floor is that i point people to.

So here we are. I usually try to avoid these songs but yeah Bye Bye Beautiful and Master Passion Greed were, I believe, Tuomas's cathartic relief of the break up. A song for Tarja and a song for Marcelo so he could get it out of his system and start fresh. Tarja ,it seems to me, had really been taking the high road over the situation but she did not seem at all impressed with Dark Passion Play and Master Passion Greed in particular. Her "response" was the song Enough if you like to check it out. I must admit to being one of the haters that never gave Anette a chance. Her being so much better in the studio versus live only rubbed salt in the wound of Tarja's dismissal. Bands breaking up and changing members is a fact of life but the way it happened left a lot of disgust for Tuomas & Marko in me for years. I didn't really pay them much attention again until Imaginaerum (while DPP was the only album in between it was three years and a lot of touring). Imaginaerum does have, in my opinion, the best Nightwish song for Anette's voice in The Crow the Owl and the Dove.

Excellent analysis and I am with you 100%.
And it is also smart to go back in time and get some "vibe" from the former singers, to really see how Nightwish have evolved through time - from their composing, style and to their lyrics. In that way you clearly see the impact Floor and Troy had, when they became permanent members. It's also important to remember to time-line here. Both Troy and Floor were real professionals when they arrived (the documentary "the making of Endless forms most beautiful" shows this). Especially Floor who had been writing and composing for more than a decade on top level, she participated on a whole new level, compared to former singers.
And as you say, Anette is a very good singer, especially to this type of compositions (Tuomas is a genius in knowing exactly how-to) - but on live concerts, she came on short. She is better now - much better.
It's incredible to see how the 3 singers perform the same songs differently - and there are fans to all of the versions. It really shows the evolution and the effects of the lead singer - and how well the rest of the band can adjust to the lead singers personality and style - and vice versa. The fans reaction is another story....
Excellent analysis and reaction - and please don't worry about doing a lot of Nightwish reactions - their songs and styles are so versatile from pure classical music, celtic folk, to heavy metal, that it will never feel alike.
The reason might be in the change of lead singers..

I would have thought being the replacement for Tarja and singing this would have felt awkward as hell for Annette.

Maybe you should listen to the version with Floor in Wacken 2013, different vibe. Not for a reaction but just listen to it.

Anette is a pretty good we pop singer but i believe Nightwish prefers a more powerful dramatic vocalist like Tarja or Floor. It just suites the Symphonic sound more. Dark passion play is one of the most Aggressive songs they ever made. It's an attack towards Tarja husband as the band and Tuomas felt he caused the rift between the group. But then again those rumours that Tuomas was in love with Tarja? Maybe it's just some fans imagined or wished that was the case but no real proof has ever been shown. People forget Tuomas and Tarja formed this band and they where best friends and grow up together since school. There's a hell of a lot of emotional heartbreak.

Do all 3 of the breakup from tarja
    Do master passion greed next
    It's about tarjas husband
And then finish it of with the poet and the pendulum
Master passion don't exist as a live performance. They have never played it live

Must must listen to Master Passion Greed - no live, no video, but you do not need it to fully experience the message. Marko is on fire & it is a heavy metal song. Angry Tuomas is just as awesome as happy Tuomas, artistically.

If you want more Annette, please make sure to listen to 'Amaranth', a.k.a. their other video with more than 100M views. It's a bit less of a 'message song', but an **absolute banger** nonetheless. Plus, it's the one song that simply belongs to Annette, in the sense that not even the glorious Floor has been able to make it her own. Once you hear the chorus, you'll understand.

I always felt the entire band was deeply wounded by that first split (including Tarja imo). It was heartbreaking to watch at the time.

Annette is a great singer! It’s hard to come into a band and replace the original singer, and it did, absolutely cause a rift between the fans. But that being said, it seems that rift was closed by Floor. Floor seems to have healed the band and healed the fans. The Nightwish army is whole again. I will agree that 2006-2007 was an extremely emotional time for Nightwish as well as was 2012 when Annette left the band and Floor had to fly from Europe to Denver (I think) and finish the tour having only the flight plus 3 days to learn the set list and practice with the band, singing with Marco for the first time. And she killed it!

Here Delain ft. Floor and Marko already in 2009, sorry bad quality: ua-cam.com/video/hHtJsiLAkM4/v-deo.html. And there is also a single version of Face Your Demons by Floor's After Forever ft. Marko from 2006.

and this video is the most watched video of nightwish and also the label channel on youtube!!!

I love Floor, I love Traja (Nigthwish or solo) as I love Anette (again both on Nigthwish and solo), they are diferent as vocalists but all made part of the history of the band... The world has bigger problems than Nigthwish fans busting each others balls all over the internet about who is the best nigthwish vocalist! They are all from where I stand! Music should be fun... And I HAVE FUN listening to Nigthwish Whom ever sings the song!
    All the love from Portugal!

    Couple things here:
    1) nightwish live, with floor, may be a top 5 bands for me, even playing old songs.
    2) as a rule I am not a fan of Annette in the context of this band. Her voice is way to poppy, without the ability to play the catalogue.
    3) I am really not a fan of the majority of nightwish's catalogue in studio...i generally find their studio albums overdone/over produced... this particular song is an exception.

I love how the model guitar player drops to her knees to shred and she is still taller than Emppu standing in his power stance/ lunging guitar warrior pose! 😁
