  • This month it has been two years since we moved onto the land. Time to look back at all the hard work of the past year.

New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten and our toddler Puck on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands in 2018 and moved south in our old campervan. Two years ago we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. After lots of hard work we now live in a beautiful yurt and keep ourselves busy growing our own vegetables as well as producing olive oil, wine and honey on a small scale. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home. Want to see more updates? Don't forget to subscribe!

I watch so many people establishing new homesteads, but all of them have so much machinery, stores with all sorts of supplies they just go and buy, making it all so much easier. Yours is going slowly, perfectly imperfect, labour of love, hard work and persistence. You might be going on slowly and with lesser funds, but in the long run, you will get further, enjoying it all along:) Stay happy and healthy!!!

Brings a tear to my eye seeing you three living the off grid lifestyle my wife and I have enjoyed in the Sierra Nevada for the last 18+ years. Our two kids grew up to be the most amazing adults I know, and I’m convinced that growing up in a yurt without television is a huge part of it.
I will tell you when I bought a second hand backhoe, every project on the ranch got a LOT easier. Love what you guys are doing, it’s hard to be different but it’s worth it.

That was a lovely retrospective video. I just realized, and I am not aways alert at 73 haha, that your son is Portugese. Are you all learning the language? I have lived in Italy for almost a decade and I'm still not fluent in Italian. But as they say here, "piano, piano" or "slowly, slowly." You deserve to have the best land and the best life as you both are working so hard. And I'm confident you will achieve this.

@@ourportuguesehomestead you have to learn Portuguese, exactly as you demand people from other countries to learn duch when they live in Holland. How will you be able to understand society without learning the language?

    • @MunirMMaruf
      @MunirMMaruf 2 роки тому

@@TheLuis0087 your comments just shows how shallow you are. try raising kids and making a off grid homestead from scratch and then complain if you have the time and energy . I think they are taking it slow and slow and steady wins the race.
Also in Netherlands/ Germany (as an expat ) you can easily live and work here with a understanding of people/ culture without speaking proper Dutch/German. Off course speaking the language helps (needed for more non skilled work).

Hi, I love your channel. I've noticed that you have lots of wood that can be turned into charcoal. Please consider learning how to do this because you can then make Bio-Char (aka Black Earth or Tiera Negra). In essence, you place your grass cuttings and leaves, chicken manure, and food scraps on top of a half filled barrel of charcoal. Soak the entire mixture with water (and the muck from your wells) for a winter. The charcoal absorbs all of the nutrients and will slow feed them to your garden vegetables for generations. It's incredible stuff. Keep up the good work and God Bless.

Rewatched the year one review and started playing this one and it's such a contrast. Year one, a perfect length video, told in story form, including intros to video clips without sound but nice music. You showed enough, without showing too much, so it stays an enjoyable rewatch. I really hope year three review is more like year one, with possible improvements of timing things never too long(so people want to watch the other videos), and it's always nice to have bonus material that was never seen earlier in a video. Adding a map in videos and highlighting where you are on it is another thing people might like to understand the bigger picture. I really want you to have a viral video again to boost overall viewers/subscribers!

Dos años y la verdad es que han pasado bastante rápido, con sus cositas. Me alegro que sigáis con la misma ilusión que cuando comenzó todo. Saludos desde sur de España....y mucha suerte.

To *hydrate* the soil to avoid watering the plants so frequently:
    1) get 2 identical clay pots, drill a hole on the bottom of *one* and glue the pots together at their tops (water-proof adhesive)
    2) After a day, bury them near the plants, leaving the hole outside to refill when the soil drains the water you put inside
    3) Cover the hole with a stone/cork to prevent evaporation, dirt and bugs accumulation
I learned this from Geoff Lawton: permaculturenews[ . ]org/2018/12/25/how-to-make-your-garden-drought-proof-using-unglazed-clay-pots
Really enjoyed watching your efforts grow this year 🙂

Don’t know of that is efficient in a bigger garden, but we might try with some trees and other perennials. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos :)

Our family did a similar adventure off grid in Italy. We were not far from two villages so I did not feel so isolated. But we did grow all our own food. And went to town only for essentials.
