New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten and our toddler Puck on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands in 2018 and moved south in our old campervan. Two years ago we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. After lots of hard work we now live in a beautiful yurt and keep ourselves busy growing our own vegetables as well as producing olive oil, wine and honey on a small scale. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home. Want to see more updates? Don't forget to subscribe!

Cover the base of your trees with rocks ( as close as possible the rocks must not touch) the morning dew will rundown and add some water the trees
I’ve read that in the heat rocks too close can hurt the roots of young trees. We have a few where Maarten made a little ring around them to keep water from flowing down the hill and those trees don’t look so good... Might also be a coincidence

Quinces are used here very much for making syrup and jelly as well as jam. It takes time to cook them, but they are delicious. We also cook pieces of it in water with a a little sugar until soft and then cool it. So refreshing, both the fruit pieces and the liquid!

Here in Indiana usa the old time farmers fence hogs into an area that they dug a pond. The pigs compact it . I am a city girl , it doesn't make sense to me because pigs make a mess out of dirt but that is what they say. I love your plans and you have created a beautiful homestead ❣️

you have really accomplished so much.The work is forever and the little ones remind you that you can do a little every day. We don't see the progress as we are bystanders, but seeing your excitement each week is endearing. I was so happy along with you to get the washing machine and the fridge, so there it is, one day at a time. Congratulations on a job really well done. Yes a pond would add on more beautiful to your land. I would love to have a pond in our back yard...someday. your family has almost all you need fruits trees is a big plus! Love it
I see a lot of progress... because I know how full of brambles your land must have been when you first got there! And they spread pretty fast if you don't keep cutting them back. Still, if they're fruiting, they can also be a resource for preserves in your pantry. 🙂
When I was a child, my parents had a 76 acre farm, and 10 acres of that was raspberries (I don't know how many hectares this is). Yes, it was a lot of work, but it provided us with jam/preserves and a little money too (people paid to come pick fruit).
It's a lot drier there in Portugal, so probably not feasible to get goats & other ruminants because your water source is limited. Cows, especially, can drink a lot of water each day. You're right to limit the number of animals you bring to your property, at least until there is much more water. Your well is spring fed, though, which means there is water running underground, so there's a possibility there of discovering other springs & capturing new water sources. People today mostly don't know how that's done, but there are ways to do that. 🙂
You have many years to develop your land, it isn't going to all happen at once. 😁 I had a garden that took me 8 years to get the soil into the condition I wanted it to be... it was built on very rocky land that had almost no topsoil. People thought I was crazy, until my garden finally started producing, and then all the neighbors started building gardens too. Haha 😂 Everybody has an opinion, you know, but you keep building on your ideas and you will succeed in creating your own little bit of Eden there. 💚
2.46 acres = 1ha..... 10 acres= 4.05ha
Goats, sheeps and cows are very common in the region where they live. Beira Baixa region can be very hot and dry from May to October, but this region is very rich in water sources too. the last couple of years was good in terms of rain, but it can be very difficult when you get 2 or 3 years almost without rain... it happens here from time to time....
Thank you, that was a wonderful tour. I thought your land was more than 4 hectares, but now I understand why I thought that. The diversity in the geography, as well as biology is amazing. I think you picked a wonderful place to build your homestead. A lot of work yes, but it is a glorious location. Thank you again for the video.

Towards the end of this video when you did the panorama shot of the surrounding mountains nearby that was a really beautiful view from your property. You can feel the peace of your place from these video's you share.

If you want to spare water, transform some old dead trees in to woodchips. It keeps the moist in the ground, and it even can filter some parts of your gray water. It also slowly breaks down into nutrition.

These strange apples are MARMELOS (quinces), peeled you can make MARMELADA (marmelade quince) and with the peels and seeds you can make GELEIA DE MARMELO (quince jelly).

Hi, love watching you and Martin workig hard and having babies, great 😁🙂. Watchig your 2 year tour, you described quinta trees. In Portuguese a quinta is a homestad/ farm . Those bitter fruits are called quince in English and marmelo in Portuguese . Love your ideology ,good luck e saude 👍
Lea is actually saying quince with a Dutch accent sounds like kinser so not quinta.

Bentonite clay is good for sealing ponds. In the states you can get it from distributors if you can get it down your road.

Having just survived the Great Heat Dome, I do hope you stick with your idea of earth sheltering part of your house. The difference between the basement and the main floor in 45 degree heat here was tremendous. The basement remained livable.
That looked really scary! We can get 45 degrees here as well on occasion, and it will only happen more I think. Glad to hear you had a cooler place to stay
Quince can also put in the oven and it’s delicious cook them until soft. The pips and skin have a lot of jelly which they use to make Turkish delight with. Great work you have done well. Wishing you always the very best.🙏🌷💕

I enjoyed your tour. It is great to see that all th had work paying off. IT'S AS dry as can be out here it the western desert. But our monsoon as the locs call it is back. So it alleviates the dry some.
This region is also slowly becoming desert so I know the feeling. Hope you can catch some rain when it falls :)
Doing well. Those olive trees look lovely but they are a tough tree. I still remember the scratches moving dried branches. The garden is very special.

Lea, I discovered your channel a few weeks ago, and I have binge-watched all the episodes, looking forward to my evenings when I watch you and your lovely family. Maarten is wonderful, always working, trying meet the diverse needs of a family. Your children are gorgeous. Love watching Louis, especially when he seems to be searching for a necklace he has lost ! Sissy is an old lady, who appears to love her peace. We don’t see much of the cats. Miss Mr Hank, but he got above himself. Lovely chickens.

Ruminent animals can help rebuild your soil. 4 or 5 goats, movable electric solar powered fencing. Rotational grazing them all over your property. Your soil now is so depleted....its dead. Get as much manure as you can and spread it around. Your goal is to have soil loaded with earthworms. This supports native or introduced grasses, that will hold rainwater, prevent erosion, and feed ruminant animals (goats, sheep, cows), then the cycle repeats.
Ok, but only if you come over everyday to move them and prevent them from coming into my vegetable garden 😉

Nice property! It's good that you have ur own water sources! I'd like to see more of the vineyard as I've heard that the plants are shorter on hot climates, but the fruit are big. The little one looks so cute. He looks so much like Marteen! :)
The vineyard is on a seperate property, hope to go there again soon to show the grapes :)
You can use the silt from the bottom of the well as fertiliser
