Chevrolet 350 5.7 Belt Tensioner and Pulley Replacement

- Here is how to replace the accessory belt tensioner and pulley on a Chevrolet 350 5.7 Liter V-8 engine. This is a very easy job to do. When you replace the police and the belt tensioner on your Chevrolet V8 engine, you should also replace the belt with a new belt. If your belt and pulleys are making noise, this will fix the problem. If you have loud belts or bearings, this will fix it.
Here is where to order a repair manual to help you fix the accessory belt on your Chevy truck:

THANKS!! THE best part is that the way you filmed it and the cammera you used was realy clear and well lit.!! and a position that you didnt move it all around !! for me it was just like standing next to you and watching , made it real easy for me to fix mine!!
You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.
GREAT JOB, I know I'm watching a smart man when he changes all the pulleys (tension-er) because he's got them as a bulk deal, not just changes them as they fail. I always think that is the smartest way to do it too!! Thanks for the clear tutorial.
You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.
Nice video helped me out with my boss's truck 94 gmc Sierra had to change the same parts you did. Watched a few of the videos on how to do the job and yours was the best and simple to follow and straight to the point. Take care and god bless you and your family peace.
Thanks. I’m glad I could help.
Of course mine decided to pack in in at -30 below today. Mind you 300,000 KM and original one but your video made it very easy to change even in the extreme cold. My concern was that reverse bolt on the idler tensioner wheel. Thanks...... Great and to the point......
You’re welcome! Stay warm!
YES - you are a youtube hero!!
Thanks
Ur video is still helping chevys get back on the road! 🤘
Glad to hear it.
Awesome, appreciate the video. The reverse thread got me
*Thank you! Simple, brief and to the point. I'm glad you mentioned the other pulley (idler) as mine was stuck fast! Bearing completely wasted.*
You’re welcome.
Great video. Thanks for including the before and after
You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.

Thank you sir, going to replace a pully of mind here in a bit using this tutorial
You’re welcome
“I replaced the belt too”😂😂😂😂 good video🫡
Sir. You have the best video yet. Thank you

My last truck project was a tune up on my 95. All acdelco parts including a new belt for a little over $100.
One of the great things about these old Chevy trucks is that all the parts are so cheap. And most of them are pretty easy to install as well.
My new belt tensioner won’t turn for me to get the belt under it
Thanks great video. Simple and easy to follow along. I appreciate it!!
Thanks
thanks man your video realy helped me get the job done..!!tanks again
You’re welcome
Nice camera work...I recommend gates belts... can't beat em

Very easy to understand thanks just subbed I need for my 89 Chevy caprice
Really appreciate your video man
Very nice. Many thanks!

Is the Engine number behind the AC compressor? Not Casting number, actual Stamped engine number.
Thanks
It's super helpful if you call out what size socket/tools you use.
Harbor Freight Chinese 3/8". Pulleys Chinese as well. Next time try AC Delco/GM. 😝
Excellent video!
Thanks brother.
Peace and blessings

Thank you so much for the video I got it right on their after watching 3 times to really see I appreciate you

How do I reroute a serpent belt for 92 GMC vanderum 5.7L 350 van
Thanks for this great Video! As Im totally new to chevys, how much tension should be on the belt? how to check it? Thanks!
It was very helpful for me, thank you for helping with your knowledge.
You’re welcome
Quick question about the tensioner. It says load with an arrow pointing counterclockwise. Do I turn it to tighten the belt? I have a little more slack than I would like. Thanks
No. You can’t change the amount of tension. It is automatic. On my truck, I bought the wrong belt one time, and it seemed a little loose, and it would jump off the pulleys when I turned on the air-conditioning. Maybe you bought the wrong belt for your truck. If you still have the original one, you need to match it with the new belt and make sure it’s the same length. On these engines, some of the belts are half an inch longer than others, so they look almost the same, but they’re loose enough to jump off under load.
@@hoohoohoblin I changed out the tensioner. Thanks for the reply
You’re welcome
Hey thanks for the video! But when installing the new belt, is it supposed to be a little loose? I installed but haven’t started because I was afraid something would go wrong with the belt, but everything is on there correctly
The tensioner keeps it tight, so it shouldn’t be loose. There is always tension on it from the tensioner spring.
That first one you changed with the spacer, I can't find a replacement spacer or the hardware anywhere
junk yard
For the idler pulley I tighten it but it doesn’t spend freely
Great video, thanks
You’re welcome
Would this problem be the result of a squeak?
It could be. If there’s not enough tension, the belt will squeak. Try changing the belt first and see if the squeak stops.
Thanks for the video! It helped!
You’re welcome
What year is this truck? Thanks
Thanks for the help
You’re welcome
Thanks for the help! I might’ve missed it in the video, but where did you get the belt from?
I bought it from the Pep Boys. I recommend bringing your old belt and if possible, because some models of truck have different size belts that are pretty close. Any auto parts store should have a built in stock for a Chevy 350.
@@hoohoohoblin thanks!
Great video! Just what I needed!
I’m glad I could help.
About to change both idler and tensioner since belt keeps slipping off the idler on my truck
Did it fix your problem? Mine keeps slipping off

Would you happen to know what belt # I can get to bypass the ac compresor on a 97 chevy 5.7?..I know is smaller but there is got to be one that I can use, thanks in advance if you can help me.
I don’t know. It’s a tricky thing, because sometimes a belt will be just a quarter inch too long, and it will jump off the pulleys. Maybe you could measure around all of the pulleys with a string and then bring the string into an auto parts store and try to find a belt that matches. Or you could search the auto parts store website for a belt to fit your model of car without air-conditioning.
@@hoohoohoblin Thanks a lot,I will do the string part.
When you bought the new tensioner and pulleys did they come with new bearings? Awesome video
What yr and make is this truck? I have this serpentine set up but on a c10 I bought. Trying to find the right belt.
1995 Z71 Silverado with a 350 V8.
Will it work with a 93 Silverado 1500 383 vortec ....cause in Australia our chevy motors spin the other way.
I bet it’s the same design. I think all the 350 V8 we’re basically the same for the whole decade.
What size sock it brotha?
Mark Sandoval 5/8ths for anyone who needs this still
Had my ac on and the belt started to make a God awful sound so I turned the ac off on my way home and it still had a slight noise. Pulled in my driveway and turned the ac on and the belt slung off the pulleys so idk what the hell happened.
Where did you buy the parts from??
Hey I’m looking for that same exact tensioner do you have the part number
Dayco 89220 I believe this is the one
I wish I could help. I just went to Pep Boys and took whatever they gave me, but I don’t have the box anymore, so I’m not sure what it was. I bet they are all the same, or close to the same.
Wow what a difference
Thanks. The thing was really worn out.
Ya it seems like it was
Do you torque to spec?
I’m not sure what the torque spec is on this thing. I just tightened it up real tight.
This is exactly why I dropped in.
My pulley under the compression actually had the bolt come loose today and caused my belt to jump off and shred.
So I want to torque it back appropriately
I'm hearing 37 ft/lbs.
Part number?
I have a question have a 1995 tahoe and when i hit the gass it makes a noise and wont go fast sometimes i feel like its the gas pedal
It could be the throttle position sensor or maybe a stuck EGR valve.
@@hoohoohoblin i just switched that 3 days ago it dosent choke anymore it just smells like gass in the hood like alot of fuel...do you recommend new injectors and fuel preassure ?????
g
Great helpful video, you were very informed with the way you explained. thanks 8/4/19
I had to fix the timing on my 95 it feels like a V8 now
I just got done changing mine. Just F.Y.I. to people watching, the tensioner bolt size is a 16mm
Thanks
Mine only makes the noise in the mornings.
$45 now
Hmm get a v belt.
I don't think that's a 5.7
It is. 1995 model.
@@hoohoohoblin you didn't have to take the fan off did you?
@@lancelootzee5244 no you don’t need to take the fan off or the fan shroud.
First
Thanks.
Mine was making the same noise for the last few days. I was planning on changing it after work today, but I never made it out of the driveway. That bearing locked up and the pully came off. Easy fix, but missed work. What a crappy week. lol
They usually make some morning sounds before they go bad. I did the same thing and ignored mine until the alternator seized.
