  • I had some fun with this project! The feature ring was constructed of ebony, walnut and paduak. I used western quilted maple for the rest of the bowl. I had no idea how much the quilted maple liked to chip out. There was quite a bit of that on the segment joints that required a sharp negative rake scraper and lots of sanding. The ebony, walnut and paduak turned beautifully on the lathe. I think each of those colors really compliment each other. The shape of this bowl is a little different than many of my other recent projects. I hope you enjoy. Thank you for watching! -- Dan

    Mr. Livingston, thank u for the video. Question.. if shopping for used lathe.. What do i need to look for in purchasing one.. (hobbyist.. newby, low budget) motor speed/power? size?

    • @LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft
      @LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, thank you for watching. Swing distance is a measurement from the center of the head spindle to the lathe bed times 2. If you want to turn bowls like this one, you might want to look for a lathe that has a swing of 16 inches or more. In other words, if the swing is 16 inches, you'll be able to make bowls that are 16 inches wide. If, on the otherhand, you will be turning pens and other small projects, you may want to consider a midi-lathe. Midi-lathes, like the Delta, are great for beginners. All of that said, I like the Nova line of lathes. If you go with a Nova, or other newer lathe, you will want a DVR motor, which doesn't require changing belts on pullies. I hope that this helps you. If you hit the lottery any time soon, go buy a Robust Sweet Sixteen lathe. $$$

    Dan what table saw blade do you use? How many teeth and what kerf? Thanks...simply amazing bowl

    • @LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft
      @LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft  4 роки тому

      Hi, thank you for watching. I use the Forrest Woodworker II thin kerf blade with 40t. It's 3/32 inch and has 20 degree hook. The tips are C-4 carbide. It's a very nice blade and I highly recommend.

    Sometimes you share your cutting summary output from your Woodturner Pro software. I'm at the stage with my software tool in learning feature ring design. Could you share the summary for this bowl? Thanks in advance.

    • @LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft

      Dan, In the summary you sent me (thanks) ring five is the feature ring a is 1.75in thick, but in the video there are two rings you glue to form that ring. Is splitting that ring done within the Lamination PRO software?

    • @LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft
      @LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft  4 роки тому

      @@trunyan5080 Yes. It's cut in half to make upper and lower halves. The halfs are then "flipped" and glue back together. Lamination Pro will help you immensely.

      Hi, thanks for watching. You can. It's easy. The key is making sure that your table saw blade is properly aligned with your table saw top. Then make sure that your cross-cut sled is adjusted and away you go. It really isn't hard. If you were my neighbor, we'd have it figured out in 15 mins.
